I’ve always had this mini-dream of having a wonderful garden, full of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. When I moved to Indiana from the desert, I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to have this dream garden of mine. However, I ran across some pretty substantial hurdles, and truly had no idea how or where to start. The biggest hurdle was that I genuinely knew nothing about gardening. My little brain kept thinking that all I needed to do was throw some seeds on the ground and nature would handle the rest. That is not, in fact, the best way to go about starting a backyard garden. Year two in our house in Indiana brought a renewed desire to plant stuff, so we decided to try again (husband was pretty excited too), so we started to clear out some weeds and some deeply embedded root systems. Even with a heavily toothed yard tool (I have no idea what it’s called, but it looks like a medieval torture device), we struggled to loosen the soil enough to be able to plant anything. So, we planted a lilac bush and some honeysuckle, and decided that was good enough. I fully admit we gave up. We have a huge yard that we have decided to just let nature have. At no point in our gardening-failure journey did we consider raised beds. Clearly, we had little experience and the desire wasn’t THAT great. I recently ran across some raised bed gardening books that opened my eyes to the possibility of having that garden. This book provides excellent tips on how to start and maintain a raised bed or container garden. What I liked was that this book will tell you exactly what plants can be grown in the same area as other plants. These symbiotic relationships, apparently, can really help the gardens flourish. The amount of information in this book is vast, and I can’t wait till next summer (we’re a bit late this year) to try a raised bed area (we’re going to start small).
The words 'companion planting' and the quirky cover art was what initially caught my attention to this book and excited me to look further. Its was meant to be. I jumped at the opportunity to read and review, thankfully I did. The conents was a lot more than I had anticipated and immediately confirmed this book was going to offer comprehensive information into gardening with understanding of the importance of soil, using different practices and their benefits or not and the whole relationship between plants and their needs. Great book with an ambundance of knowledge delivered in an enjoyable read. Definitely worth the time, whether you are a novice or experienced gardner, there is something to gain within these pages.
Id have to say this is the best beginners guide I’ve ever read for gardening. I’ve been gardening for about6 years starting with 4 raised (bench height) garden beds. I made many of the mistakes to avoid written in this book. There’s is so much good information that is so relevant over the years.
This beginners book is the most incorporated information written in a great flow and relevant to the info being shared.
Best New Gardeners guide regardless of garden beds being included. Well done. I’ve written very few 5 star reviews as I rate on everything. Yet this is the 2nd this year.
This book is very informative on companion planting, which begins on page 136, before that you get a little history and some facts for a few years that have passed. Each chapter starts with a quote.
This book states right on the cover for beginners, but I think all can benefit from the information that is inside. So, if you are interested in starting a garden and would like a general idea what to plant together and what not to, or if you've been gardening awhile with only certain plants and want to expand this book is a definite read.
A wealth of knowledge and information within this book. Written in a style that stayed on track, yet was very enjoyable to read. Using this book as a primary consult places the reader on the path to sure success.
