This volume opens with Skinny Hulk vs The Thing, hits you in the feels a couple of times, and then gets wilder from there.

description

Joe Fixit is in control and he and his emaciated counterpart head to Hell (sort of) to rescue Banner. Meanwhile, something else shakes loose from that place and tries to work its way out.

description

Alpha Flight gets a makeover with some evil new members called the U-Foes, while the old members set out to try and find Doc Samson's original body. Of course, they run into some problems along the way.

description

New gamma powers pop up, old friends reunite, and it looks like everything is heading towards the showdown we've all been waiting for!
I will say I was somewhat confused as to what was happening at certain times, but I'm not sure if that's because the story was actually murky in spots or if it's just because it's been a few months since I read the last volume. But it's not like I'm going to stop reading now, so what does it matter?
I would love to sit down and do a re-read of this entire run once it's out, though.
I've said it before, but this is honestly the best Hulk comic I've ever read and I imagine that this will be considered the iconic version of this character within a few years' time.
Seriously. If you're on the fence, you might as well go ahead and read this one now.

description

The art is the star here and in the rest of the volumes.
So, even if you're unconvinced that Ewing's run is the strongest there is, you need to take a look at the incredible panels drawn by Joe Bennett and the covers by Alex Ross. Alex Ross is perfection and Joe Bennett makes body horror look visually stunning.
Highly Recommended!

Another great volume of Immortal, although it wasn’t perfect. The issue with the guest artists felt like filler story-wise, although the guest artists themselves did good work and the changes weren’t jarring.

The highlight was the encounter with the Thing, which really hit home with Joe’s cry of rage at Ben that stops the fight and takes the whole thing to the next level.

As a total Alpha Flight fanatic, it was great to see Shaman turn up. The developments with Walt and Leonard were intriguing, too.

If I could, I’d give this volume 4.5 stars but I’m rounding up based on the overall quality of the series.

At least Bennett’s antisemitic artwork was edited out of the digital version. I can definitely do without that crap…

Some wheel spinning here as Hulk builds up to the final volume. The best part is the The Thing appearance. It's glorious. Makes me want to see Ewing write the Fantastic Four. Bennett continues to kill it on art. Enjoy the Bennett art while you can. This run is the last Marvel work you'll see of his. Marvel fired him over some antisemitic art he snuck into the background of issue #43. What a dummy.

This was an interesting volume and I love how it starts off with a fight against the thing and then seeing them patch up sorts of and Grimm coming to understanding with who the Hulk is, and also seeing the fragile and child like innocence of this being while weird was a cool exploration and I love the next few issues with Joe Fixit and showing how cunning and street-smart he is, then the fight with the U-Foes and the man behind it, Henry Gyrich, who was a good addition here, and he I that government agent kind of villain, a one-time Avengers foe and him being here makes sense and it makes for the greatest fight between the Hulk and this U-Foes and omg its brutal and the way one other alter/form comes in.. was not expecting this but a cool reveal nonetheless.

I loved that. This is one of those volumes that’s really building towards the finale and promises to be epic on all fronts, its got all the big actions and surprise twists you kinda want in such story but also does well to flesh out its supporting cast which is done in a brilliant manner and I kinda wanna see what happens with Gamma Flight and the Hell in hulk conclusion inevitably, this would be super cool to see! Amazing volume and I highly recommend it!

_______________________________________________________________________________
Hulk faces off against the Thing and its epic the way its done, I really liked that part and then there is the emergence of Joe Fixit and a fun day for him and in up there, Gamma Flight departs their way from Gyrich who then brings the U-FOES to fight the Hulk and its epic the way its done, with him weakened is he really a match for them? Meanwhile in Shadow base, some real body horror with Rick and Del Frye fusing and the emergence of others there, meanwhile in the below something going on with the leader and one below all and hulk personalities there and Cosmic Hulk?! This volume was totally bonkers and I am loving the direction of where its going. One of the best volumes and the art is freaking insane, body dysmorphia, Gamma Vision, twisted scenes in the Below-Place and the Warped sense of everything is too god and the story is tying many plots together. Its all headed for a final collision next!

A brief appearance of the Thing from the Fantastic Four and a larger role for Joe Fixit among the Hulk personas make this a very fun volume to read in this series. It is rare for a series to still be this good nine volumes in.

This volume was a ton of set up for the final arc coming in volume 10 of Immortal Hulk.

Saying it is set up isn't bad though it didn't do a lot for me other than some great moments. One on a ship where someone is going to go to drastic measures to prove himself. A meeting with The Hulk and The Thing is pretty great too. The final few moments are promising big things are coming for the Hulk because something is born from all this terribleness.

It's a lot though. At this point the series almost DEMANDS a re-read to get it all. I do plan on picking up the Omnibus when it comes out to really get the full scope of this series. Because reading them so far apart it doesn't always hit the highs as if you read it all in one go. Saying that, still a solid volume.

Poor Banner and his Hulk alters, they are really going through hell (literally). Such an amazing storyline. Looking forward to see how Ewing wraps it all up in the next volume.

Oh, we're really in the shit now. On the mortal plane, the Savage Hulk must face the U Foes, which would be bad enough, but beyond the Green Door, the Leader has finally made his move!

I'm getting a little bored of writing about how good this book is, so let's summarise, shall we?

Superhero action? Check.

Mental mind games? Check.

Continuity respectful developments that will (hopefully) affect the Hulk for years to come? Check.

Artwork that will make you feel uncomfortable and yet unable to look away? Check again.

So yeah, more Immortal Hulk goodness from the usual suspects. One more to go!

Immortal Hulk: The Weakest One There is collects issues 41-45 of Immortal Hulk.

The Hulk is on his last legs when this volume opens, emaciated and depowered, and Joe Fixit is in control of Banner's body. When Gyrich sends the UFOs after the Hulk, can the Green Goliath hold them off in his weakened condition?

Nope.

This volume feels like it was more setup for the final volume than anything else. Like the last volume, it also feels more decompressed than the earlier volumes of the series. Still, it has everything going for it that I love about this run, like grotesque body horror and expansion of the Hulk mythos.

3.5 out of 5 stars. Time to finish this.

It's all fun and games when The Thing gets to clobberin' against Skinny Hulk but... damn. When you realize that it ain't just "Skinny" Hulk, it's actually quite sad. Things are picking up pace and the plot thickens as the U-Foes are introduced at the end and a new Hulk is unleashed.

This IMMORTAL HULK run by Ewing might well be the most consistently excellent title by one of the “Big Two” I’ve ever read. It’ll be sad when it ends.

So the beginning of this volume was a battle between Hulk and the Thing. Going into this, I thought it would be a huge battle. But really, it's just sad.

The thing is, Hulk isn't in the best shape right now. He's currently what I call Skinny Hulk! Joe Fix-it is in charge of Skinny Hulk, meanwhile Bruce is in not in the best shape at the moment.

He is in Hell with the Leader. We didn't get to see a bunch of this, but what we did see was just setting up the next volume. That's all this volume is really. We follow the members of Gamma flight picking up the pieces after the events of last volume, but that's really it. Don't get me wrong, I still loved it, but this volume was more filler if anything.

Less screen time for the Leader means more enjoyment of the book for me. Ben Grimm, Jackie McGee, and Joe Fixit work overtime to distract me from the godawful boring stuff happening in "The Below-Place."

And frankly, I hope Rick Jones stays a giant human penis for the indefinite future; it is the most interesting he has been in decades. Any chance of an action figure/sex toy, Marvel?

The big finale is coming tomorrow.

Stupid levels of fun. Almost…shallow comics (inside joke).

But still feels smart, on some just-out-of-reach level that always eludes me (due to my inability to retain the details of the issue I just read, let alone the deep continuity on which it draws).

Bennett continues to out-horror the horror lags of old, and Ewing keeps swinging Hulk and his playmates around like some forbidden toy box that he just can’t stop treating like he’s the kid Hulk who makes such a great victim in this tragic play.

One more volume to go. Can’t even imagine where The Players will end up, and I’m both impatient to find out AND worried at the feeling of loss once this is all over.

Weak Hulk and Joe Fix-it are stuck on Earth, trying to figure out what to do now that Bruce has been dragged to Hell by the Leader. The Weakest One There Is is, at first, a less monumental volume than the previous one, with fewer big reveals, more punchfests, and more Gamma Flight. There's also more of the...U-Foes? What the heck kind of team name is that? Al Ewing is really digging into the history books with this series.

The final issue throws all the real punches, though, with the U-Foes defeating Joe and Weak Hulk, thus sending them to Hell where... At which point, A lot of spoilers there, sorry, but my lack of understanding of the Hulk-verse makes me feel like some cliffhangers are more shocking than others.

I still had fun, even if The Weakest One There Is is a weaker volume than the previous one. It's nice to take a breather, especially as the Immortal Hulk series ramps up to a big conclusion.

The penultimate volume feels a bit like wheel-spinning, so it's obvious that Ewing timed his arc correctly. Mind you, there's still lots of great material here: Ewing really spins up the body horror, we get the return of another classic villain (or rather villain group: The U-Foes) and we see more of the Master's ultimate plan. Overall, a nice bit of the story, if a bit slow moving.

Still very, very good--I'm amazed at how this comic has managed to maintain its almost flawless level of expertise--but very much a transitional arc, setting things up for the finale. Loved the meeting between Hulk and Ben Grimm and the artwork throughout continues to amaze.

Final stretch to the end of the series. A lot of things to pull together. Will it make sense? Or stay true to the horror genre and end as a vague mystery?

The Immortal Hulk Vol. 9 The Weakest One There Is collects issues 41-45 of the Marvel Comics series written by Al Ewing and art by Joe Bennett.

The Leader has drug Bruce Banner into hell, leaving The Hulk on Earth with the conscience of Joe Fixit and The Child Hulk incarnations. On the run from friends and enemies, Hulk looks to one of his biggest rivals - The Fantastic Four’s The Thing.

Great character building for the Joe Fixit personality in this volume and The Hulk is at one of his most weak and desperate hours. It’s strangely unsettling to see The Hulk so powerless and afraid, but gripping at the same time. I’m usually not a big Fantastic Four fan, but the interactions with The Thing are great. Ewing and Bennett are crafting a master class story.

The only reason I gave this collection 3 stars was because of the Thing guest issue. That was kind of classic in execution. The rest of the book is just more of the more of the same. There is an evil boss in charge of Gamma Flight, Gamma Flight quit, gets replaced by evil team working for the "government". Good guys head to another Gamma Base. It was all just filler, cliched filler at that. The best bits was the Thing and Mr Fix (Smart Grey Hulk). We could have more of that but at this point but I doubt it.

Honestly I've totally lost track of the overarching plot machinations of this series, but it doesn't matter, the psychological and/or body horror is still so damn good, Banner's, ah, personal problems manifesting on a mythical-cosmological level. Even this far in, they're still managing to find new horrifying and/or stunning imagery. I'm assuming they've got something big planned for the final volume, but even that aside, this series is one of the all-time greats.

Damn, I love this series. The last volume ended by setting up the expectation the Hulk and the Thing were going to throw down and have a brutal fight on Coney Island. And yeah, some punches are thrown, but what eventually ends up happening between the two of them is immensely more satisfying than what the story set up. If I have any complaint about this, it's that the scene didn't go on long enough for my taste. And damned if I don't feel an incredible amount of sympathy for the Savage Hulk after reading this series.

The Leader has pretty much cemented himself as the new One Below All in Hell, and Gamma Flight returns to Gamma Base Zero to attempt to get Doc Samson back into his own body. Meanwhile, Henry Peter Gyrich has sent the U-Foes to take down the Hulk, and that fight (if one can call it that) is quite brutal. I've never encountered these characters before, but I can see why people were asking writer Al Ewing in the letters column whether they were going to eventually show up. I'm really enjoying Joe Fixit's personality, so I'll definitely have to check out Peter David's famous run of the Incredible Hulk.

And Joe Bennett's art continues to deliver. I'd mentioned in a previous review that his body horror art reminded me of John Carpenter's film The Thing--well, there's no doubt whatsoever that this film was one of his inspirations, because he throws in an Easter egg reference that is unmistakably from that film. This volume really sets things up for an exciting conclusion and I can't wait to see where it all ends up.

"Rumor has it that death and the Hulk are no longer on speaking terms.”

The (potentially?) penultimate arc of this saga forsakes some of the horror stylings of the earlier stories for something slightly more in line with standard superhero fare, but even in its most stripped down form, the Immortal Hulk is still one of the strongest books in Marvel’s roster.

As someone who is not a ln affecienado of Hulk mythos it's a little hard to follow now as there are a lot of characters popping up which I have never heard of (such as Joe Fixit) which I'm sure Hulk fans will already know, so it's difficult for me to track who is possessing who at any one time.

But I appreciate all the knowledge Ewing has in this book and how he is pulling it all together. Jackie's gamma powers were unique and it's still a fascinating book.

The establishment pushback continues, whether manifest through Marvel's long-standing institutional dickhead Henry Peter Gyrich screwing over Gamma Flight in favour of operatives less constricted by conscience, or Jackie McGee's paper going the way of so much local journalism lately, a man in a suit telling her how much he loves her work before the other shoe drops: "The board feels the Herald would benefit from pivoting. Less of a print presence...less emphasis on investigative reporting. And obviously, we'd need to adjust your salary. But let's think of it as a fresh start. How do you feel about lists? Fun, right?" Meanwhile, the Hulk is still low on alters and even lower on options; drained of gamma, he's a long way from the strongest one there is, and if he transforms again, he's basically screwed. Still, as a character he's famous for being able to keep a lid on that sort of thing, right?

Oh.

My timing was such that I ended up with the early print of issue 43, the one with art details in one panel which could be construed as anti-Semitic. What the reports on this didn't mention was that, just for extra WTF value, the same issue's letter column also featured a letter from a rabbi. Applauding the book for bringing back the spirit of EC. Which, I guess that's one way of putting it? Even if some flavours of outrage play a lot worse than others these days.

"Anyway, I did a speech about a passage from the Torah. From the story of Job. You know the story of Job, Hulk. Satan--the accuser--takes EVERYTHING from Job. His home. His FAMILY. Even his BODY ain't his no more. All with God's permission--to test Job's faith. Course, it's Satan who asks for the test...When I studied that passage...at the time, I'd just got RICH, and I acted like a real JERK about it. Guess I figured good things didn't happen to bad guys...So all I thought wuz: 'Hey! Things ain't so bad fer me! At least I ain't Job, right?' Maybe I shoulda been lookin' out for whoever WUZ."

"I ate my hot dog. Where's all this GOIN', Grimm?"

"Hoo Boy. Good question."

from "The Man Downstairs"

In Volume 9 of Al Ewing's Immortal Hulk series, we have guest stars The Thing, Alpha Flight, The U-Foes, and a few issues with the hard-boiled noir of Banner's alter-ego Joe Fixit. The story has settled into a comfortable niche, balancing action and reflection without tilting into absurd profundities. If you read up to Volume 9 of this series, there's little I can say but that the material continues in the same vein--and has actually improved.

I also love the cover of this collection, Alex Ross's Marvel homage to Norman Rockwell. It's a fascinating image, though nowhere in the storyline.
