A couple weeks ago, I was in the general area of a store that a friend of mine had suggested I check out. I was without kids and had some extra time on my hands, so I took advantage! As I walked in, the first thing I noticed was a book shelf, and on that shelf was a copy of a book my daughter is reading for school right now. I was excited already. Nearby I found this book "The Prayer Book for Tired Parents - Practical Ways to Grow in Love of God and Get Your Family to Heaven" I love things that are practical. I am tired often enough. My greatest goals are to grow in love for God and my number one job is to help my family get to heave. So, I bought it.

When I read the first chapter I was a little turned off, as the couple who wrote this book seemed to be younger. They had small kids - a baby, toddler, and preschooler, and they had only been married about 7 years. My first instinct was to think of a younger mom I could gift this book to who might relate to it better than myself.....but I read a few more pages and decided that some of the advice might be relevant after all.

Under the heading of chapter 2 was the quote "You either belong wholly to the world or wholly to God." ~ St. John Vianney You cannot belong to both. This was followed by the Litany of Humility which I have always found beautiful, yet have a hard time following it's intentions. I especially struggle in asking Jesus to deliver me from the desire of being preferred, from the fear of being calumniated, and from the fear of being forgotten.

I learned about saints who were once tired parents too. Of course we have Mary & Joseph who had to travel to Egypt right after having a baby to flee an evil king's attempts to kill their newborn. Then there is Saint Monica who spent countless hours praying for her wayward son and husband. Saints Louis and Zelie Martin had a house full of little girls. Saint Gianna was a full time working mom - a doctor with 3 children and a 4th on the way. St. Frances de Chantal had 6 children of her own, took in her sister's 3, and then her husband died leaving her a single mom. St. Elizabeth Seton and her husband had 5 children. Her husband died and she eventually also had to take in her 6 younger siblings, all this while founding an academy to support herself and her children! St. Basil & St. Emmelia had 10 children and 5 of them became saints! These are just a few of the many. If they can do it, so can we! If God calls us to the vocation of parenthood, He will surely give us the graces to raise our children.

The book explores all the ways we can and must put God first in our lives - no matter what. This can make us unpopular, or create tension when having to make decisions about how we spend our time, but it's something we really have to do. There was also practical advice on how to keep holy reminders around our homes and present in our daily lives, and encouragement on praying together as a family.

Since this book was just written in 2022, it talked about some of the damage that was done to our society as a whole by the global pandemic that started in 2020 - most of all keeping people away from being physically present in the church for so long. Fortunately, that is no longer a roadblock.

St. Therese of Lisieux said "You cannot be half a saint; you are either a full one or none at all." With our faith it's all or nothing. Either we are faithful Catholics, or we are not Catholic. We must root out the things that lead us away from God, even when it's difficult. Detachment from the attractions of the world allows us to give ourselves more freely to God. There were some tips on how to find more patience - that is my greatest stumbling block! Above all, the book emphasized the importance of having faith and hope and prompted me to remember that I am exactly where I am right now because that is where I am supposed to be, and I must trust God's will for my life and not struggle to let my will take priority.
