Amazon unveiled the fifth-generation Echo Dot at its annual hardware launch event. It's available in standard, watch, and kids formats, just like the Echo Dot 4 range before it.
Although the design hasn't altered, there have been some noticeable upgrades. In all three models, you get a new high-revving speaker, which means better sound quality.
There's also now a built-in temperature sensor (as already on the Echo 4), which means Alexa can tell you the temperature of your room. More usefully, you can use temperature as part of a routine, for example, to have Alexa turn on a fan when a certain temperature is reached.
The third new feature is the accelerometer that allows touch gestures. These include pausing and resuming music, rejecting timers, or ending a call.
The Echo Dot 5 with clock has a brighter, higher-resolution screen that lets you display more information, such as a song or artist name, repeat countdown, weather, calculation or unit of measure, and more
Finally, two new Kids Editions are available, with owl and dragon designs, that get the same upgrades as the regular Echo Dot 5 and come with a year of free access to Amazon Kids+.
Another benefit is that all Echo Dot 5 models can act as Eero mesh Wi-Fi extenders.
