** For maximum enjoyment, series should be read in order
Annabelle Jacobs lives in the South West of England with her three rowdy children, and two cats.
An avid reader of fantasy herself for many years, Annabelle now spends her days writing her own stories. They're usually either fantasy or paranormal fiction, because she loves building worlds filled with magical creatures, and creating stories full of action and adventure. Her characters may have a tough time of it—fighting enemies and adversity—but they always find love in the end.
Before we start, I need you to take a peek (or two) at the cover. I can’t stop looking at it and wanted to ensure you had the same viewing pleasure! Nick, oh Nick. I’ve been aching for Nick’s story since Rys and Gabriel found their happy ending. I can’t think of much that rivals Annabelle’s shifters, except maybe her paranormal beings. Neither Nick nor Dathal are wolves, but I was overwhelmed with the same untamed sensations I always feel when reading AJ’s shifters. My skin prickled and my breath sputtered as the pages flew by. Their magic simmered and pulsed, promising great things. And it delivered.
We met Nick in the first Dark Forest Pack book and if you’re not familiar, I highly suggest starting there first! Nick recently inherited Midnight, the paranormal nightclub where he skilfully tended bar. Betrayal cut deep when his dear friend and club owner, Zane, broke his trust and violated his memory. Feeling vulnerable isn’t new, since his magic has been bound for the past six years, but he’s especially fragile after the recent events. He needs to clear his head and push through the rest of his sentence, his deep dark secret only Zane knew about. The last thing he needs is Axel’s cousin sweeping into town and Nick off his feet. But Goddess help him, fate must have plans for him.
Dathal doesn’t understand his cousin’s appeal to the human world. The fae world isn’t just extraordinary, it’s beyond comparison, why leave perfection? As a member of the fae guard, he holds his duty first and foremost. He’s tasked with helping discover the culprit behind smuggling Blue Alhuirn out of the fae world and hopes it’s double quick so he can return home. Until Nick. Nick calls to him and his magic. He doesn’t know what it is about Nick, but he can’t get enough. He used to pride himself on his self-control. Until Nick. He’s desperate to be with him and unleash his magic. Dathal follows all the rules. Until Nick. Dathal never considered binding his soul and magic with another. The fae binding ceremony is for others. That is, until Nick. Nick changes everything….too bad he can’t have him.
I absorbed this story and was enthralled every step of the way. I loved returning to the Dark Forest. I loved unraveling the mysteries of the fae and their unique powers. I loved the unlikely and impossible pairing of a witch with a tainted past and a valiant fae guardian. I loved seeing Rys and Gabriel again. I loved witnessing Nick drop his walls. I loved witnessing Dathal embrace his relationship with Nick, brushing the consequences away without a care. I loved Dathal’s gift for protection. Don’t tell him I said so, but I see him like a K-9 police dog. Ha. He’s fierce and fearless, assisting the paranormal police with no regard for his own safety. Dathal has a tiger heart but he unwittingly gave it away. If you are game for a high-speed and spicy romance with a sassy witch and a mystical defender, look no further. Now, I am going to sit tight and wait for a certain beta shifter and his elusive silver-haired fae to face the music. *giddy dance*
Beware of: A ticking clock…an investigation brings Dathal to town but he can’t stay. Invisible chains…a weighty sentence fades when fate steps in. Mighty magic…above all, love triumphs.
This book is for: If you enjoy PNR then I have no doubt you’re quite familiar with Jacobs and her glorious worlds. If not, take a step back to Rys and I’ll see you and Axel…hopefully soon!
Ok so this wasn’t as appealing to book #1. Obviously hahah
To me it started out slow and I’m already not a fan of the strangers to lovers trope. It always feels boring and bland. So much so just like finding love in real life lmaooo. The first 20% was repetitive, but then it picked up at 33%.
Their love development was complicated. This was for sure slow burn, but the kind that bores me. There were too much going on between them, but at the same time felt like nothing actually happened. There was only ONE reason they couldn’t get together and they made it so complicated. I wasn’t hooked by them, but only frustrated. They kept going backwards and it was no fun. Boring slow burn ever. And after all the complications, the three times they actually spent time together, they only had sex. Everybody already knows I’m tired of this sex > emotional connection shit so there’s that. At 97%, when they finally got together, it was again, sex business. I will never be able to understand these books.
After everything I went through, the 3% of promise on their HEA is not worth it.
This was definitely a contra to the first. We got a stronger connection with Gabriel and Rys in the first, but this didn’t really focus on the relationship, and made me feel so detached from both Nick and Dathal. While it did focus on the plotline, the climax was messy that I didn’t care anymore.
Seeing I wasn’t so appeal by Dathal in the previous book, makes him so bland in this one. It was just ok reading about Dathal and Nick, but Axel still catches my heart so far. His book is next and I hope it will be better than this.
Storyline-wise, I would say this was much more lacking in depth compared to the first one and I don’t rven know how was that possible. I was confused most of the time. I’m not sure how this series will go on but I’m hopeful for the third. Because of my sweet AXEL! I love him since the beginning 😍
Overall, the plotline in book 1 was more entertaining and this was really…. fuck, I don’t know how to feel about this one. Will I quit? No. I wanna see what happen to Axel’s story and then I’ll decide on quitting. He’s a sweetheart!
In Redeeming Nick we find out more about the cocky witch who is Mase’s best friend and why he’s been so cagy about the circumstances which led him moving up to the Dark Forest Pack area.
He’s a bit of an enigmatic character so it’s amusing to see him stunned into silence when he meets Axel’s cousin Dathal, a member of the Fae Guard sent through the Gateway to help with the investigation into the Blue Alhuirn smuggling.
Dathal is a mysterious violet eyed Fae and Nick cannot understand why he’s so drawn to him. It seems the same is true for Dathal and there’s plenty of speculation among their friends as to just why that might be
Annabelle then takes the reader on a journey which seems like it can only end in heartbreak as Nick and Dathal’s magically connection has unexpected results while they’re burning up the sheets with a chemistry that’s off the charts.
There are unexpected developments in the investigation, there’s something odd going on with Max and his flat (and pack) mate Jake, Axel and Talis are still ignoring each other (and thank the lawd their book is up next!) and we have danger almost around every turn.
The adrenaline rush is really pumped up in this book as the plot twists and turns as the net draws closer around those responsible for the smuggling ring and there’s an unwelcome return from a Hunter group with connections to a traumatic time in Axel’s past.
As ever the world-building is second to none as we get to visit the Fae Realm and Annabelle creates a vision of a place where everything is a little bit lusher, brighter and shinier, simply just more than the human world.
Along the way Dathal and Nick’s connection roots firmly in their magic and each begins to feel a pull when they’re apart which adds a level of tension to the narrative outside of what’s happening with the police work that I really appreciated.
When the shoe finally drops and the proverbial hits the fan, they have to give in to the forces that stand in their way and just hope that fate will be kind.
I loved everything about this book. The pacing is superb, it has lulls where you get a chance to take a breath, scorching hot sex scenes between them in which their magic comes along for the ride, some mystery and further developments in the series long arc as well as a glimpse of what’s to come.
Getting these books early is both a blessing and a curse, because now I have to wait to see if Axel and Talis will finally get over themselves enough to fix what’s gone wrong between them and to discover what’s happening with Max and Jake’s pack that’s bringing them grief.
It has been a while since the first one came out, but the wait was worth it. This is good. Nog only we get Nick's happily ever after (with both cute and sexy moments) but we get even higher stakes for the coming Talis and Alexi book! At least feelings wise. I can tell now that one will be an emotional ride and I'm ready for it. The suspense was good, the action was good, it was all overall good. I'm glad Annabelle kept this series going.
2.5 stars I didn't like it as much as the first book, but it was still read-worthy. The mystery kicks in only in the final chapters, otherwise it's mostly a love story. Which was okay but there was definitely something missing here 🤔
I’m so enjoying this series. I believe I found Redeeming Nick even more my favorite because of the characters and chemistry Jacobs creates here.
One caveat, a reader must bring a certain amount of information about the universe and characters history with them into each story. If you are new to Jacob’s’ werewolves world (and connected series), you will feel a bit lost or without a good foundation for the magic, politics, and overall series arc. That includes the Fae Realm.
That’s hugely important here when one of the main characters is a Fae guard, Dathal. Dathal is charged with the investigation into how such a rare powerful, lethal substance from the Fae Realm was smuggled through a portal into the human one, with deadly consequences.
Those events began in Claiming Rys Book 1 and the investigations continued here as it becomes apparent there’s a more complex plot behind the smuggling operation.
Dathal, cousin to Axel, a sexy, gorgeous Fae who’s been a part of the series from the beginning, is a great character. More serious, less aware or knowledgeable of the human world than Axel who lives here, Dathal’s personality and viewpoint is both humorous and fascinating. He’s definitely Fae, whereas some of the other Fae characters have softer “edges” to them from living in the human realm.
One of a two person POV format, Dathal’s perspective is distinctly Fae, with a genuine focus for his work and love for his realm, which contrasts well with that of Nick, a witch whose magical abilities hold a secret from his past.
Nick is also a terrific character. He’s demonstrated personal growth and courage in the course of this investigation as well as betrayal. He’s greatly invested in how the scheme has been implemented and who’s responsible.
When the two come together, the physical and emotional charge is remarkable. Jacobs does such a fantastic job in making this almost instant connection feel hot and genuine . That they fight it and fail comes across as absolutely believable.
I could have done with even more of their relationship but there did need to be some kind of storyline to move the smuggling theme forward and it does. Onto the next book. It’s turning out to be a very interesting and layered affair.
Next up is Axel’s story, hints of which we get here in this book. I can’t wait to read it.
Due to the series arc and story structure and character development, the books should be read in the order that they were written.
I’m highly recommending this series and book for all lovers of paranormal and fantasy fiction and romance.
Dark Forest Pack series: 🔷Claiming Rys #1 🔷Redeeming Nick #2 🔷Guarding Axel #3 - June 27, 2023
Saying I've been looking forward to the second book in the Dark Forest Pack series would be a massive understatement. Book 1, Claiming Rys, was a 5 star read for me and I'm ecstatic to report Redeeming Nick was just as fantastic. The worldbuilding is so interesting, while the fast moving plot kept me up way past my bedtime turning pages. That's rare for me, as I have a high demanding job and two young girls at home which make sleep a precious commodity in my house.
I found the connection between the MCs super intriguing. With Nick being a powerful witch and Dathal a fae who's own magical abilities are nothing to sneeze at even among his people, the pull they had to each other had me asking all sorts of questions. If neither witches, nor fae believed they had a fate given mate like the shifters, then what was it that kept drawing them to each other? What was making them feel an ache in their chests when they were apart? Why did their magic always seem to seek each other out when they were near, and especially during their intimate moments? It seems a bit far fetched that there wasn't something magical going on. Speaking of magic, it really was beautiful how theirs entwined whenever they came together. It added such a fantastical element to their steamy scenes and racked up my enjoyment of the book as a whole.
Plot wise, the mystery of the Blue Alhuirn is still going strong. There's definitely forward momentum on the whole investigation, but for every twist we uncover, there's another player added to the board. It seems Axel's past may have a part to play in this whole thing and I am beyond overjoyed that his and Talis' book is next. If I had to spend another book with them awkwardly dancing around one another I might have thrown my kindle in frustration. (Just kidding I would never hurt my baby. It's like my 3rd child, just much more well behaved.) Honestly though, with the little glimpses we get in this book I'm almost positive Axel must be Talis' Soulmate. This breaks my heart because I can't imagine how hard it must be for Talis to not have his mate by his side. We saw what this did to Rhys in book 1, and Rhys didn't see Gabriel for years. What must it be like for your mate to be a part of your own pack, but still out of reach? I guess we'll find out when book 3 comes out in 4 months.
I've only read the first one in this series a few weeks ago, then wondering why I left it for so long and now pleased because it's still fresh in my memory. The case about who's been bringing the poisenous plant from the Fae Realm is continuing in this book.
Nick and Dathal meet when the latter is sent to help with the investigation. We met Nick, who's a witch, in the first book as Gabriel's best friend. You could feel he was a bit of a mystery, he was hiding something and in this book we found out what it is as when the story evolves it turns out there's a link to his past.
Dathal is Fae, a bodyguard in Fae Realm, Axel's cousin and is staying with him during the investigation. He's only there for the time it takes to solve the case and will be going back after.
When both men meet, there's an immediate attraction, the tension between them is off the charts and when they give in they just can't get enough of each other. Both men know there's an end date to their 'relationship' but neither can't and won't stop. Over time their feelings grow so deep that they start wondering if they are meant to be together.
Meanwhile we get sucked into the investigation which has a lot of twists and turns and keeps us at the edge of our seats.
I loved everything about this book and am already impatient to read the next book in the series which will be Axel and Talis' story. They've been dancing around each other, making me so curious about what's going on there.
*I kindly received a copy of this book by Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.*
I liked book 1, but preferred this instalment, mainly because I found the plot more interesting.
Dathal is fae and has magic. Nick is a witch and has ‘problems’ with his magic. (🤐) They are very different and from different worlds.
Their relationships is assumingly ‘doomed’ right from the start (yeah!😉), not only because Dathal’s time in this world is limited by his task, but also because the strict rules the fae impose on their citizens. This creates a good amount of tension and heart-ache throughout (yeah!), and I was keen to find out how it would be all resolved.
The way Nick and Dathal click is very similar to a soulmate bond, so be prepared for quite a few insta-love moments. However, I must say that this is well done, and I didn’t mind too much. I very much enjoyed what happens on the magic front between them!
Quite a bit is made of Dathal getting used to being in this world, but I’m not sure this plot line really worked for me. The ‘cat-incidence’, for example, struck me as incongruous with what we know of Dathal. While it was quite amusing, it seems a bit unbelievable. I also wondered if Dathal would be happy on this side of the world in the long run, because he clearly loves his home world very much.
Main niggle: The first scene at the night club was far too drawn-out and unnecessarily complex, as was the final ‘action scene’ at the end.
But I loved the romance here, so I was happy to look past that. Looking forward to Talis and Axel’s story in the next book! (But it's really Max's book I'm craving for!).
Dathal and Nick's story picked up right where the last book left off, and it didn't take long for me to get sucked back into the suspenseful investigation. Though Nick and Dathal were new characters to me, I would have been completely lost had I not read the first book in the series, as pretty much everything that happened was a direct result of what the police had discovered previously. It was fun to catch up with the characters I'd met previously, and I really enjoyed seeing the brand new connection forming between Nick and Dathal. Their physical attraction was obvious from the start, and it only got better once they let their magic run wild. I devoured every steamy, stolen moment the two of them shared, and knowing how busy each man was with their full-time jobs only made the time they carved out for each other more special. I thought the pacing of the investigation was spot-on--not so slow that I lost interest, but not so fast that it felt overwhelming and left no time for the romance to develop between the main characters. By the time the team had finished putting all the major pieces together and was ready to carry out the final search needed to collect evidence, I knew something big was going to go down, and the faceoff did not disappoint. After that, the only thing I had to worry about was how Nick and Dathal could make a relationship work when they lived in different realms, but I knew I could trust Annabelle Jacobs to find a way to give them their happy ending.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
Ok, I'm back! Had to replace a few unmentionables that melted with the story of Nick and Dathal in this amazing second in the Dark Forest Pack series. Loved Rys and Gabriel, but, dang, our favorite bartender/witch and the omg fae High Guard. Dathhal is sent from the Fae Realm to help the paranormal police figure out the mystery of illegal fae drug. Nick becomes involved because of his connection with Midnight's owner (friend, Zane) even though his magic is sanctioned (only a few witches know). And what a story Annabelle gives us. Nick doesn't do casual, Dathal only does casual and there's a deadline since Dathal will go back to Fae Realm when the mystery is solved. When they finally get together, dear goodness, yes. The magic happens. The process of solving the mystery is intriguing. Axel, fae portal guardian, has some interesting magical interrogation methods Ms. Jacobs merely hints at. Nick's coven is so lovely and we get more of Rys and Gabe. The back story of Rys's father and stepmother, love it! But the scene in the police HQ, when Dathal walks in his Fae Guard uniform (hint, it's leather), staking his claim on Nick, holy moly. Annabelle, in just a few lines, stinking lights up a bonfire. I reread that scene multiple times. Nick and Dathal working things out at the conclusion with the setup for the next story (Talis and Axel,f finally!) is so satisfying. Please tell me we are going to get Mac and Jake's story eventually!
Oh, kudos for the cast of characters in the beginning, wish more authors would do this in series!
4,5⭐️ I received an ARC Copy of this book from GRR, this review is from my own thought 😍
This book was really great, I enjoyed meeting Dathal and learning so much more about Nick. It's a good mix between magic, investigation, trials, other-realm and more.
It is said that sometimes, the price of your mistake is higher than the action in itself, it's exactly what happened to Nick, the arrogance of his younger days brought him to be punished and he still has years of penitence. Dathal is from the Fae Guard and he's here to investigate the deadly plant supplier, he knows that he's here for a limited amount of time - but he couldn't have planned how his magic will respond to Nick's.
So much tension since the beginning, it's a great paranormal romance that shows that people make mistakes and learn from them. Also, nothing he's never as it seems so looks better !! And ohhh so many tattoos on both of them, I was already curious about Max and Jake but now I'm even more curious !! I can't wait for Axel and Talis' story.
With the owner in jail, Nick is the new manager of Midnight, a nightclub for paranormals. He has a lot to do to keep everything running smoothly and does need a distraction in the form of Dathal, a fae guard sent to find the persons responsible for bringing a deadly plant out of the fae realm. Neither one is prepared for the instant attraction and connection they feel. Nor are they prepared for the inadvertent consequences of being together.
This series is incredible. There are so many layers to the plot. One part is uncovered, only to reveal more. Greed is once again a major cause but there are other causes as well. Nick and Dathal were beautiful together. Both knew their time together was limited. Dathal was only there to solve the crime and would then be recalled to the fae realm. That did not stop either man from seeking each other whenever they could. The action gets intense both in and out of the bedroom and will keep you reading into the wee hours. Great plot, incredible heroes and lots of action make this one book not to miss.
Possessive shifters, spicy heat, secretive witches, mysterious fae, and a mystery afoot, this is my kind of series! I’m loving the tension that carries through each book, whether from UST (I am sooo ready for Axel and Talis), or villainy (I have a feeling things are gonna get worse before they get better), I’m hooked on the Dark Forest Pack.
“He was big, broad, and corded with muscle under all that ink. Maybe I should’ve felt intimidated in the face of all that strength, but as I’d shown him earlier, I was more than capable of giving him what he needed. What I wanted. And I wanted everything.”
Mmm, a bit angsty with a whole lotta steam, I really enjoyed watching Dathal and Nick dance around each other. Even more, I fell in love with their openness and attitude. What can I say, sarcasm and feels are an irresistible combo, and these two are magic. The next book can’t come fast enough as I need more, more, more. Too bad I can’t portal myself to the future.
We’re back with the Dark Forest pack…or at least pack-adjacent as the focus this time is on Nick, manager of the local club for paranormals (he's also the a guy who has some moral debts to pay after the events in the previous installment), and Dathal, a member of the fae guard, rather than any of the shifters in Rys’s pack. This is definitely not a standalone as the overall story arc continues from book one even though the romance is between a different couple.
I did enjoy Redeeming Nick more than book one in the series. This one just feels a little more well-rounded to me with better pacing, possibly because all the major scene setting has already been done. Also, I do love a redemption story. Aside from the ongoing investigation into who has been committing the terrible crimes, the instant attraction and then the growing relationship between Dathal and Nick is fantastic. It almost crosses into forbidden romance territory, as the fae court doesn't allow guards to have relationships with other species…especially witches. As part of the continued world building I really liked the treatment of Nick’s magic and how it interacted with Dathal’s, too.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Redeeming Nick. The romance is sweet with some nice heat, the mystery is intriguing - I like the direction of the overarching series plot and how the mystery is built on in this story - and I'm looking forward to seeing more of this interesting world. Yes, this is becoming a great urban fantasy/PNR series.
An ARC was provided by GRR. This is my honest review.
This is the second book in the Dark Forest Pack series. Nick is a witch whose magical abilities have been suppressed by the Council of Witches for past infractions. Dathal is a formidable fae with powerful magical abilities who has been tasked with the investigation of why and how a deadly plant is being smuggled out of the realm of the fae. When they meet, their attraction is strong and obvious from the beginning. It feels like they are meant to be and as they start an intimate relationship, forbidden but oh so magical.
I liked this book better than the first one of the series. The pacing was better and the words seemed to flow a lot better. The MC’s connection seemed genuine and their chemistry was off the charts smoking hot. The story was interesting and though-provoking, and the characters were fascinating to get to know. I can’t wait to read Talis and Axel’s story next.
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Redeeming Nick by author Annabelle Jacobs is the second book in the Dark Forest Pack series. This story is told in dual POV and I loved it! I loved getting to know the world better, and the chemistry these two have. They are powerful on their own and even more so together.
Dathal is Fae. He has come from his realm to this one because he wants to know who is selling blue alhuirn. He is a strong person. His magic is powerful too. He has a lot to learn about living outside the fae realm, but he is more than up for the job.
Nick has had his magic bound by the witch’s council. Zane had betrayed everyone in the last book. Now Nick is left to pick up the pieces of his own life without his best friend. There is a lot Nick is dealing with. Betrayal, hurt, and finding his way now.
I loved this story. It moves the entire series along, and the love is magical. I cannot wait for more from this series in the future.
So we have a continuing arc from the first book, the investigation to find out how the Blue Alhuirn has been transported through the gates and who is refining it once it has crossed. We did find out in the first book why the killings were going on and that portion was resolved. So Lady Sarhin, Rys' step mother, has sent Dathal, one of the fae guards, across to help with the investigation. What he doesn't expect is to find his soulmate. Nick is now running the paranormal club Midnight due to things happening in the first book. You really can't read this as a standalone. Nick's magic has been blocked by the council as punishment for something that he did. All of that comes to light in this book. He has told only a couple of people about this. The investigation was really good and did not clash with our boys & their sexy times. They do find out what is going on, but some very bad fae & witches have escaped the fae prison & one of them has something to do with Axel our loveable fae. His book is next & I can't wait to see him finally being caught by Talis, cause you know it's going to happen.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest opinion.
Wow! What else can I say? Annabelle Jacobs is a master of paranormal suspense, and I’m always in awe of just how quickly I become enthralled by her stories. The characters, the action, the suspense, the risk…all are elements which combine to create a truly amazing, satisfying experience.
With this second installment, the Dark Forest Pack series keeps getting better and better. I was pulled in by Rys and Gabriel’s story, but Nick and Dathal are absolutely captivating. From their first encounter, it seems they’re destined to be; however, the challenges they face due to their status and races work against them at every turn. This is one instant attraction, forbidden romance I was unable to put down. Highly recommended for anyone who loves paranormal romance, especially mystery and suspense.
This is Nick and Dathal’s story, and it’s full of magic, plot twists, and a connection between the main characters that has both heat and heart. It helps, for context about the world the characters inhabit and the characters themselves, to have read the previous book in the series (as a bonus, like this one, it offers interesting characters, immersive plotting, and strong chemistry as well as plenty of intense emotion). I’m not going to say too much about the plot because it’s worth experiencing on your own, but I will say that the way it unfolds is absorbing– there are no dull moments, but there’s also time for our main characters’ relationship to grow and develop in significant ways. I have read and liked a number of this author’s books, and I’d rank this one among the best. 4.5 stars.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Amazing paranormal romance! I adored Nick and Dathal together. The pull they feel toward each other is instant and mutual, but I really liked that it wasn’t insta-love between them. It was so sweet to see them gravitate towards each other, initially trying to keep a distance but gradually growing closer both physically and emotionally. Dathal quickly senses Nick has a secret, and I loved how patient and supportive he was, and how very determined to shower Nick with love and magic to make him happy. The worldbuilding in this series is incredible! It’s such a great mix of otherworldly mythology and a gritty, urban setting that feels very realistic. The cast of secondary characters is incredibly well written too, nuanced and intriguing.
Redeeming Nicis a sexy read by Annabelle Jacobs. Dathal is a pleasant surprise, especially to Nick. He is a fae that is assigned to investigate the illegal use and theft of their Blue Alhuirn. He's also investigating Nick's friend Zane. Nick is a witch and has been punished for the past nine years for a mistake that he made. Dathal and Nick are attracted to each other but they reason why they can't pursue a relationship. They have to work together to solve the mystery and there are a few surprises on the way. The book is funny, romantic, action-packed and with some intense moments and their sexy times are hot. It was great seeing the previous characters and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series for the world building and the balance the author found between the romance and the mystery. All of that continues in this second book and I think I enjoyed it a bit more because of my previous familiarity with the world. In this one, Nick and Dathal, witch and fae are continuing the investigation begun in book one but they are also puzzled by their immediate and inescapable attraction to each other. Both are strong characters not afraid to go toe to toe with each other to get the job done but there's also that extra sizzle in their interactions that will eventually fully ignite and get them their HEA. Cannot wait to read how everything wraps up in book three.
This is the second book in the series and while it can stand alone I think it is best enjoyed after reading book one.
In this book Nick, a witch whose magic has been bound a a punishment by the witch council, gets involved with Fae guard Dathal who has been sent into this realm to help with the smuggling/poisoning case from book one. After initially resisting the attraction they decide they can engage in some harmless enjoyable sex before Dathal goes back to the Fae realm. Of course no strings turns into something more.
It’s an enjoyable story that also builds the tension for the couple who will be the MCs in book three. This is sweet and emotional and speaks to the healing power of love and of letting someone in.
Time to leave comfort zones. My kindle is still smokin! Nick and Dathal don't know what they are in for! Little did they know, they can't turn away from each other. Nick, feels the pull toward Dathan, but can't figure out why. Secrets keep everyone on their toes. Dathan feels his pull toward Nick as strongly but folled himself into thinking they were temporary. There are lots of roadblocks keeping them apart. Do they feel compelled to go over or around? Good flow among the characters and great world building by the author. The story mystery continues and each question leads to more. Great story, intriguing! Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is the second book in the series and this time we have a witch in the form of Nick from book one and Dathal, a mysterious fae and also a member of their guard who’s come to help with the smuggling investigation.
When Nick also gets involved in the investigation, inevitably making them cross paths.
Both of them know that any sort of relationship between then shouldn’t happen, but neither can deny the pull they have towards each other and it becomes impossible to ignore.
Alongside the romance we have the ongoing case and it leaves me as a reader unable to stop because I need to know what happens next. Really good paranormal romance!
Overall, a wonderful tale, with plenty of heat, excitement, and love, and I enjoyed the ride!
However --and this goes for the whole series, and is more my personal set of quirks than anything: I am not a super fan of the whole "let's invent a new language (mostly swear words) and sprinkle it here and there" - especially when the author hasn't made philology their life's work. Thankfully, a glossary, including a listing of the extensive cast of characters, is included. However, the need to use either is a slight distraction. (With a cast of nearly a dozen recurring characters, did one of them really have to go by two different names? Seriously. I'm old and have a crap memory, particularly for names, even without the aging brain.) Anyway, that gave it a dropped star - along with the apparently obligatory lack of a literate proofreader endemic to the entire romance genre, regardless of orientation.
Continuation of book one. Diversity still a zero. Which is so freakin disappointing. We met more people and besides a red headed witch (side eye) still no diversity. I’m starting to wonder if that is your fantasy. To have have no BIPOC/disabled folks in your story. So point off. Story was good I love learning about Nick, and about more of the world. We get deeper into the mystery in the background. The writing was good. The smexy was magical, and I’m excited to dive deeper into other characters and having past characters still being a part of the story.
