I appreciate that this book focuses on process rather than product. It's about using drawing as a learning process--discovering techniques and how to use materials through actual practice. It contains many drawing activity ideas, and each activity focuses you on a certain technique or material.
For beginners, keep in mind that you cannot learn to draw by reading a book. You can only learn to draw by drawing. That's what this book promotes. If you are looking for a book with step by step instructions on how to draw things, this is not be book you are looking for.
Have I gotten so hopeless that I had to resort to guide books? Yes I have lol.
It wasn't overall the best one I've read really. I think I'd rather prefer a step by step instructions of sorts? Either way, it was at least...slightly helpful with the tips.
Doesn’t tell you how to draw but gives u tips that make sense so 3 stars cuz of the misleading title I thought I was gonna become Vincent Van Gogh from this book but I now just know a lot about paper and pens
This book is the perfect starting point to start to draw. The book is direct with simple but effective explanations of what to do when drawing. At the end the author recommends other books from other authors, which are great to continue the learning journey.
As someone who likes drawing and sketching and has some knowledge of drawing, I found this book much more interesting and quite beneficial. It's combined by lots of small and easy practices with theories in the back part you can jump to whenever needed. It also encourages you to explore different tools and media as well as your own style.
I have always wanted to pick my pencil up but felt reluctant to do so with excuses of "life is too busy" (i.e. social media is more attractive than everything else). This book finally convinced me to go back to drawing. Thank you Jake.
I used to carry a sketch book when traveling to help me see.better what I'm looking.at; a building, a scene at a unique location. I.often I over did details. Its clear now from Spider's wonderful book that I didn't know how to do background or outline drawing lines. The book is fantastic in showing how to.outline the scene and be free to fill in details at a later time. What I'd call Sparking the memory and recall.
The one item that needs to be considered is where , when doing a sketch is a good place to jot down notes on.what I'm recalling or trying to do. A separate note book maybe?
So off to find my drawing pencils,.maybe old sketches, which were put away 10 years ago after moving into a retirement community!!
This is a great book to learn how to draw from. The most important lesson that I learned from reading this book is; draw in your outline of what you want to draw first. After your outline is finished you can fill in the details. Don't make drawing anything harder then it really is.
It's okay, but it gets a bit bogged down with speech
I don't think it's the best book out there for helping novice sketching, because it's weighed down with instructions and not enough image and detail of form !
No es un libro que enseñe a dibujar pasó a paso es más bien como dice el autor un trampolín que te ayuda a hacer el dibujo parte de tu vida diaria, me gustaron los consejos que da y los ejercicios que propone.
Spicer's books take a different approach to teaching, this isn't an instruction manual with precise steps on how to draw in a particular way exactly, but rather, it provides exercises - supplemented with a little theory - to show how to use various drawing skills.
This is the kind of drawing book I’ve been looking for - warm up exercises to get back into the swing of things and then small projects / prompts to inspire with nods to theory along the way. I like the structure of the book and I look forward to starting !
This book was great as it provided brilliant drawing exercises and discussed how to make time to draw and what to do if you don’t have any drawing supplies.
