What happens when a star player ends up on the worst team? He either learns to lose or he stops playing the game he loves. These are the choices facing Jake, who has gone from champion to last place, testing his sportsmanship every time his soccer team gets waxed. It is his teammate Kevin who shows Jake that being a good captain means scoring and assisting off the field as much as being the star player on it. The latest in #1 bestseller Mike Lupica's Comeback Kids novels is a cheer-worthy ode to the one sport played by more kids across the country than any other--in the summer of the next World Cup.
Michael Lupica is an author and American newspaper columnist, best known for his provocative commentary on sports in the New York Daily News and his appearances on ESPN.
I might have just liked this book because I can relate to it so well. It is about a kid who is an amazing soccer player, but moves and gets on a team that is really bad. The only part that doesn't fit is that I am not an amazing soccer player. Also his team scores at least one goal every game. Either way, it is a super quick read and the kid in it is an amazing person. It was really fun and I would recommend it if you wanted to read a book you could finish in an hour.
This book was a good book, The main character's name is Jake, Jake is trying to help his new soccer team because he has moved from the championship soccer team to the worst team in the division. In the story It is difficult for him because sometimes he wished he didn't move. I thought this was a good book because Jake doesn't care about himself, but about other people too. Overall it is a pretty good book I recommend for you to read it.
I love underdog sports books, and this didnt disappoint me. The young man is only 6th grade we must remember and his maturity is off the charts. The things he does to make both himself and his team better is usually only done by high schoolers or even only collegiate athletes. Lupica did a great job of showing how an exceptionally talented young man can be a true team leader.
I like the book because it had good quality and a great story line. The book is nice and we got to keep it. It was pretty cool book the characters were smart and awesome. I really think that you should read the comeback kids novels. All made by Mike Lupica.
Play by play descriptions of soccer games intertwined with a middle school boy making friends in his new town, learning to enjoy playing the game just for the game, not just to win.
Fun read. I enjoyed the descriptions of soccer but this story was a bit too didactic for me. The main character sounded like an adult at times. A good message about team sports if heavy-handed at times.
So my opinion of this book was good and really important to me because some things that happened in the book has happened to me in real life.Shoot out is one of the best books that I have read.It talks about sports and how sometimes it's not just about winning but having fun.It had emotional parts and some happy parts in the book.I would've been better if they made it more clearer sometimes and made more sense of it.Sometimes in the book it would not be clear who he was talking to.I believe that people that love sports as much as I do should read this book.It includes things that happen in real life if you ever played a sport. It's sometimes emotional and sometimes is really important to think about and teaches all of us a real life lesson. Therefore i believe that this book is really good and that this book is good for everyone.
Mike Lupica Shoot-out Have you ever played or known someone who loves soccer? Most likely, in the realistic fiction book by Mike Lupica Shoot Out the main character whose name is Jake loves just that. Jake lives and breathes the sport and played for one of the best teams in his area until he had to move away. Once he did move away he decided to join a new team which was a challenge for him because his new team was not as dominant as his old club, they lost or drew most their games, which frustrated Jake. One of his teammates named Kevin taught Jake how to be a great captain for the squad by persivearing and helping his teammates grow and get better off one another. I truly enjoyed this book, it influenced my decision to do FC Barcelona because it was about soccer and I play soccer so I wanted to lean more about a famous soccer club. I did enjoy this book, it was really relatable and easy to read because of how Mike used descriptive words to describe Jakes movement on the field. For example it says ¨Jake totally loved this part, running in the open field even before he go in the box, before things got a lot more crowded...¨(Page 2) I like this so much because I can relate to the way he describes the game. Another reason I enjoyed this book was because of its story line, it was very creative in the way that you can see Jakes frustration as he watches his new team suffer defeat again and again. For example on it says ¨No it was not Belmont Jake disliked it. it was their so-bad-it-actually-hut twelve-year-old travel soccer team.¨, you can tell how passionate he is to win it makes him physically upset to lose. (Page 11) The topic I am doing my research on is FC Barcelona. This book influenced my decision to do this topic is by inspiring me to learn more about one of the ¨European giants¨ which are considered to be the best and most expensive clubs on the planet. During my time doing this project I want to learn about their youth program of FC Masia, some of the players and their history with other clubs such as Lionel Messi and how he devoted himself to the same club since he was 19, Their rivalry with Real Madrid, and the basic history of how the club was founded. Overall I think this will be a fun project to do because it relates to my love of Barcelona and soccer in general. I enjoyed the book and I am glad I can enjoy learning about Barcelona soccer club. I do recommend this book to any other sports fan out their. This is because it is very in detail and interesting for kids our age. One change I would have made to the book was for Mike Lupica to get into a little more backstory into the secondary characters such as his coaches and parents. .
Have you ever had the best team at something like a team for sports and your team was the best and then it goes crashing down because you have to move to the suckiest team just becaused you moved well i know i have and if you have then you know how I and jake feel. The name of this book is Shoot out by Mike Lupica and the genre is fiction. For me this book was a 50 out of 100 because i liked most of the book and then i didnt like it. I liked how the author pushed jake to be the leader of a kid named kevin because his mother died so jake tries to help him but most of the time kevin would give a smart remark or he would give him rude replies. But it doesnt end there I liked the next part of it to, Because kevin kept irritating him and the fact that he's on a sucky team it made him lose the feel for the sports.
Jake doesn't mind moving to a suburb of his old hometown. He finds a new friend, Quinn and he hangs out at the local library with some people like quin . What he does mind is his new soccer team They stink!!!. He's used to being a good player on a good team. Now he's the star player of a losing team. What will he do? the setting of this book is in the field, school, and library. so basically the coach wanted jake to be friends with kevin and jake wanted to go back to his good team but he couldnt so he had to deal with it then in the end he goes up againg his good team and the team was saying your going to lose but when jake passed the ball to kevin to shoot and he did he made the winning goal causing them to win.I think the conflict would be person vs self because he doesnt know what to do about everything that is happening.
I liked how the author made jake get 2 problems because it made it harder for him.
i can relate with jake because i used to be in a really good soccer team we were undefeated and we were good but then i moved to berwn and i lost my good team but berwn didnt suck i just liked my team i cicero better.
From a scale 1-5 i would rate it a 4-5 because i liked the book alot but it wasnt amazing enough for me to say that. i would recommend this book to people that likes the sport soccer and who would like a storry with promblem solving. Just remember if you get swithched to a sucky team just make the best out of it and try to make them better on your team if there not good and this doesnt applie to sports it applies to anything with teams.
Shoot-out is about a star soccer player on the best team in the league ending up on the worst team in the league. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. I think this was a very good sports book because I like how the author made the main character realize that if you really loved playing soccer, then you wouldn't give up playing it, just because you're on a team that isn't very good at playing soccer.
The setting is on different soccer fields where they play most of their games. It is important because that is where Jake ends up playing on the worst soccer team in the league and gets over it. Jake Stuart wanted to go back to his other soccer team that was better, but he couldn't because he had to stay on the soccer team that was closest to where he moved, so he tried helping his team become better, especially one teammate named Kevin. Then, Jake found out that Kevin is not that bad at playing soccer, he just doesn't try to play. The type of conflict is person vs. self because in order for Jake to help his team get better he has to change his attitude. He keeps thinking that his team will always be losing its soccer games, so he has to start thinking that the whole team will get better and win some of their games.
The main character at first thought that the whole team wasn't good at playing soccer and they would lose all their games after seeing that they lost their first games. The character changed by thinking that they will win some of their games as long as he thought that they would win. That way he tried his best at passing and helping his teammates score and win some of their games.
My favorite part was when Jake had passed all the other players on the other team and scored a goal, which would be their only goal. Even though they lost that game 6-1, it showed the team that they were still going to try their best, even if they lose all their games.
I would rate the book 4 stars because I liked how Jake still tried to do his best in soccer, even if they lost all their games. I would recommend this book to people who like like reading about soccer. Shoot-Out is a good book about a star soccer player who helps the worst team in the league win some of their games and beat his old team which was the best team in the league.
Dont you hate when your playing a game and theres that one person that doesnt care.Jakes a kid that played the champion-ship,but now hes in the worst team of the league. He doesnt like to lose.what does he do he keeps on playing to help the team. I think the gere of the book is realistic fiction because most of this stuff has happend to me.My opnion of the book is that it probably is a good book if I would get it. but if theres someone out there that knows what happens in the story, I will be more than happy to see it. I got this book to enjoy it but i just didnt. I wish I did.
jake is a very talented kid. he likes soccer just like me. one season hes in the best team the other in the worst. jake and his team keep losing every game. jake keeps on trying and trying to coperate with the team, but he just cant.I was like i feel you bro. The settings are in his house, soccer field, and school.the conflict on this story is person v.s. society because he is having problems not only in his team, but in school to. well jake is a boy like me. He likes soccer, school but just thinks the techers go to fast. kevin is a very quite boy, thats smartbut doesnt really like soccer.
I wasnt surprised when your star player plays as goalie because ive had to do that in my games.I was not astonished whn jake said that his shorts got all dirty when he dived for the ball, i hate when that happens to me.
I hate it when theres that few people that dont care what there doing while playing, and that happens in any sports. i was like what you think that teachers teach to fast i was like ok we have things in common. I think this is text to world because hes explaining him self. I think me and jae have a lot in comon.
so yeah if thers someonethat read it can you explain it to me.I think if i had gotten the book a little more would have more to write about. I wuold rate the book a 5 because i got like half the things he was talking about. I would recmmend this book to a person that likes complicating books.what would you have done stayed in the team or leave the team.
Jake Stuart just moved into town. His old soccer team was really good and he was the star player on it! Now he has to deal with the worst 12-year-old travel soccer team he's ever been on. One boy on the team (Kevin)lost his mother because she got really ill. It's up to Jake to be the leader on the team, get Kevin together, and win some games! Persevering through tough losses, Jake learns how to be a good coach and in the last game against his old team who is making fun of Jake and his team, it comes down to a penalty kick shoot-out. It's tied 2-2 and it's Jake's time to make the game-winning kick. But instead he lets Kevin take the shot and with a little advice, BOOM! (Kevin had as big of a leg as Jake if not bigger)It's in the back of the net. Jake beat his old team and Kevin learned what it felt like to truly be happy.
I think the main idea of this novel is perseverance. Jake gets stuck on a horrible soccer team when he's really good, but he perseveres and makes the best of it. Kevin's mom died about a year ago and he is sad forever. However, he somehow pulls it together and scores the game-winning kick. If Jake would've just let his head droop and think "Poor me, I'm on a bad soccer team" at every game, his team couldn't have done it. They needed him and he turned the team he thought was horrible into one that could beat his old team and it DID. Also, the team couldn't have done it without Kevin. You never know if Jake would've made that shot. Perseverance is extremely important.
Do you like sports book if so this is the book for you. the type of genre is its realistic fiction. I thought this book was amazing. the setting of my book is at the soccer field its important because that's where the story mainly takes place. jake (the best player on the team) wanted his team to win a soccer game but he ended up with the worst team in the league so Jake makes them practice harder then after a few days of practice they finally win they're first game.
what i thought about this book is that it was really great especially since its about soccer. the main characters problem was that he was put in the worst team of the league. an interesting thing i learned from this book was to never give up in your teammates even if they aren't the best team.
I also like this book because its written by an author that writes many different types of sports books. I can relate to the character because i remember me getting put in a soccer team that wasn't the best. Also i thought the ending of the book was great since it was the first game they ever one.
I would give this book four stars because it was great but not the best I read and also because its based on my favorite sport. I would recommend this book to whoever is into soccer. so I suggest you read this book or mike Lupica's other books if your into soccer or other sports.
The Author of this book is Mike Lupica, Sports for young adult, Published 4-14-2011 A boy named Jake is a very good soccer player. Then he moved from Greenville to Belmont and he joined a soccer team the was not so good.
Story goes from Jake’s version to third person. The plot does have a chronological order because it does not switch to flashback. It is fairly easy to imagine the plot in your head. The story switches from 1st to 3rd. It is not difficult to follow the plot. Reading the story is easy especially if you know about soccer.
The protagonist is not a specific person it is a group of people which are the Belmont soccer team and the antagonist is Jake's old town of Greenville. The most interesting character in this story is Kevin. The reason why I say this is because Kevin has so many problems in this story and it's very interesting.
The theme of the story is no matter how bad things can get you can always work your way up to the top. The theme is interesting and encouraging. Yes I did find this book interesting because I played soccer too. Yes I would read another book by this author because I like reading about sports. I would recommend this book to a friend who likes sports. You can buy this book at Barnes and Noble soft cover for 6.99 and hard cover for 9.63
“There is nothing more exhilarating than to be shot at with a result.” Shoot-out by Mike Lupica is a serious, heartfelt story that you would never had expected. Personally, I really enjoyed reading this book. It really had me feel like I was inside the book. In the book, Jack, the main character, has a bond with soccer. He loves soccer and will do anything to fight for it. Jack comes across trouble when he has to move because of his dad's job. He has to make new friends and play with a soccer team that loses… a lot! He has to adapt to his surroundings and face new challenges. The author did a great job developing Jack's character when he moved. Mike Lupica showed him in the book as shy and lonely after he moved. Mike also made Jack's feelings really well woven into the book and changed his personality once he moved. Overall, the structure of the story was very well crafted by the author which made the whole book easy to understand. The reader that would enjoy this book is someone who is interested in soccer, likes sports and realistic fiction. Will Jack adapt to his new home and living area? Find out by reading Shoot-out by Mike Lupica.
Jake Stuart is a great soccer player who has a dream of becoming a pro. Last year his travel team went undefended and won the championship, but this year it is a new year and his dad got a new job. This meant that they had to move three towns over. Now Jake has to change travel teams, and he is now officially the star player on a bad team. This caused him to be super serious, and not have much fun. He had made one best friend as soon as they moved, and he told him that it can be fun too. That's when a switch turned on, and he started getting his team pumped up. As a result they won a game! Coach had told him to be is coach on the field and off. This whole season has been rough; they only won one game and there was only one game left to play, and it was against Jake's old team! When the final whistle blows, the game is tied at 2-2. That meant a shoot-out, this wasn't a championship game or anything but this has been Jake's dream; to score the last goal and win the game. Instead he is a good teammate.

Shoot-Out by Mike Lupica, is about a thirteen year old boy name Jake who just moved from Greensville, NY to Belmont, NY because of his Father's job transfer. Jake plays soccer and when soccer season comes around he tries out. He makes the team and is named team captain. The problem is that Jake's school team hasn't had a winning season in the last five years! Jake talks to different people and finds out the school "chokes" in clutch situations. He's on a mission to change that pattern.
I enjoyed this book. It is a great story about competitiveness and the game of soccer. The book is intense and easy to pick up. I dislike the way Jake kept on referring to how good his old team was and how his new team is bad. If I could change something in the book I would change the ending.
Shoot-Out is a great book! I would recommend it to anyone who likes books about soccer and dealing with adversity. It's a feel good story.
Jake Stuart doesn't mind moving to a suburb of his old hometown. He finds a new friend, Quinn, and he hangs out at the local library. What he does mind is his new soccer team. They stink. He's used to being a good player on a good team. Now he's the star player of a losing team. The couch encourages Jake to be a leader. He also try to make the boy become alongside a teammate named Kevin who has just lost his mother. Jake is repeatedly frustrated by rude replies when he tries to help or talk to Kevin. The team continues to flounder, and Jake feels he's losing his love for the game.Despite a poor season, Jake is energized when his team has a chance to play his old school. His former teammates razz him, thinking there's no way Jake's team can win. An impassioned game ensues, and Jake offers the final, game-breaking kick to Kevin. Despite his nervousness, Kevin wins the game. He, Jake and the team revel in that moment of victory.
Shoot out by Mike Lupica is a great book and i love it and the story is about a kid called Jake and his best friend Quinn. Jake is in the school soccer team and Jake has a lot of friends in the team.
One day he found a kid sitting down way back of the bus with no one the kid was called Kevin he was a good kid but when his mom died he was sad and he did not need any friends to talk , Jake wanted to be great friends with Kevin. In the first practice Jake asked kevin if he wanted to hang out kevin did not said anything.
When Jake went to kevin’s house to play with kevin but kevin started to fight about with jake so then jake went with Quinn to play soccer.
The next day kevin said sorry on the game the coach put kevin to shoot the ball to the goal and kevin did not wanted to do it then jake told him to trust on himself and he did and he shoot the ball and goal.
I like this book because its a sport and how you work as a team.
Jake has just moved 3 towns away from his top ranking soccer team. He likes everything about his new town, except his new team. They're bottom dwellers. On top of that, Kevin hasn't mentally been in the game since his mom died and Coach wants Jake to work with him. Kevin thwarts all of Jake's attempts to involve him in the game. He wants none of anyone's pity, especially Jake's. Eventually, Jake's persistence pays off and Kevin comes around, setting the team up for a major comeback.
Lupica's books always have a conflict and lessons. They always focus on real problems. They always end with good decisions leading to good outcomes. I've never read a Lupica book I didn't like. They are highly readable. The best in sports fiction.
This is a good book for middle school students. The book can also be read by parents or teachers to students of different ages. The book teaches the traditional lessons associated with sports- the importance of teamwork, growing as a person and as an athlete and trying your best at all times. The story also addresses dealing with disappointment, the develop of leadership qualities on and off the field and true friendship. The characters are interesting and the plot is good. This would be an interesting book for students who like sports. I read this book to my students.
Do you have a young athlete who is looking for some fun books to read? My 7 year old loved this book, as did I. So many great life lessons were shared through the text. It exhibits healthy relationships between family, friends, teams, coaches and teaches character through sports. The story is engaging and the sport was action packed. I am definitely going to read more books by Mike Lupica with my kids.
Shoot-Out by Mike Lupica is a story about a kid named Jake who has moved to a new town and to a new soccer team. Jake loved soccer at his old town and there his team was the best in their region. The new town that he moved to is the worst in the region. Now Jake, a star midfielder tries to make his team better with the help of his best friend Kevin. I would recommend this book to people who like soccer because it's an amazing story about soccer.
I thought this book was really good because I like how Jake had to comeback from something. This book was about a boy named Jake, who was the star player for the best soccer team. But then one day his family had to move to a new town. Jake continued playing soccer, but for a different team. The worst team in the league. I really like this book because it showed how Jake was a leader and how he lead his team.
