Rate this book
A Peace Corps couple teaching in Malawi, Central Africa, are thriving until a fatal fall from a cliff leaves their toddler motherless and the husband bereft. Three decades later, the daughter, Anna, revisits the site of the accident and learns that her father had been accused of murder and fled the country. Immersing herself in the case, Anna struggles to learn if he did it, and if so, why. Combing through her mother’s diary, interviewing her parents’ friends, and reading archival records of Malawi, Anna gradually learns the truth and exposes a coverup at the level of the US government. Along the way, she explores What does Peace Corps do for volunteers accused of crimes? Do African villagers imagine things that are not there? Can a foreigner receive justice in a third-world court? How can outsiders improve the lives of local people?
