Daredevil: Father was a frustrating graphic novel / miniseries. Daredevil trying to stop a serial killer compiling an ever-increasing body count in New York City? Disturbing, but count me in. Daredevil knocking heads with an oddball upstart vigilante group and their pop star / social media influencer benefactor? (Both of which were very superfluous to the plot, by the way.) Well . . . okay, I guess. Daredevil having his origin story tweaked / re-written with some convenient late-in-the-story plot developments? No . . . oh, hell no. Admittedly, the set-up involving the mystery of said killer's identity was good enough to get a reader hooked, but by the latter half of the book the jumbled narrative failed to sustain the momentum. It also did not help that the actual 'Daredevil' persona took a back seat to alter ego Matt Murdock, who was in most of the scenes until the finale.

This was a pretty okayish read.

It is basically a sort of serial killer story but connected to the hero through his origin. Spoilers ahead though.

So Matt gets contacted by this woman Maggie who wants to sue a company thats given her cancer and is accompanied by her husband Sean and at the same time there is some heat stroke in the city and also a murderer named Johnny sockets whose killing people by taking their eyes out and Matt is stuck in the middle of it. Over the course of the issue he tries to solve the cases and suspects that Sean is the killer and is abusing Maggie and his past is connected to Matt's father which was a weird twist but when he goes there to confront him, the big twist is that its Maggie whose the serial killer and so many twists and all and finally finding out she was the daughter of the man Matt saved during his accident and well he molested her and so she blames Matt for everything and thats why she was killing the clients of Matt (whose identity is known at this point of time).

And thats the entire story which actually made sense and was of use and sure its too much plot and twists and feels like a 1960s thing but then again the end twist was good but that was like maybe 3 issues of story buts its 6 and there is so much fluff with Nero and Santerians and their origins, the weird heat stroke thats happening and thats not contributing in any significant way to the main plot and is just there to fill in the issues and kind of bums me out and makes the whole reading experience a bit disappointing.

But overall the main story with Maggie and who the killer is fun but the other fluff pieces added to this story hamper the reading experience and may confuse you in someway. So maybe skip this story and if you do read it, then you might like it too. Its a very "depends on the reader" type of story and yeah the pencils is good so there's that so yeah a No recommendation from me.

Demolidor Pai é um quadrinho feito com amor e dedicado ao pai do Joe Quesada, que na época que escreveu a trama, seu pai passava por problemas pulmonares. Desse modo, essa história não é apenas o Demolidor batendo em bandidos e salvando Hell’s Kitchen, mas toda uma reflexão sobre a figura paterna, mostrando o quanto ela pode afetar, positivamente ou negativamente, nos filhos.

A história se passa durante o período em que o Bendis está trabalhando na revista regular do Demolidor, ou seja, a identidade secreta do personagem foi divulgada por um jornal e a vida do personagem está uma bagunça. Entretanto, Quesada não foca sua narrativa nesses aspectos, visando trabalhar sua minissérie de forma independente.

Desse modo, Demolidor Pai segue basicamente 3 núcleos de histórias diferentes, sendo um deles com o Matt refletindo sobre como Jack Batalhador Murdock o educou e criou sendo pai solteiro, sobrevivendo utilizando os punhos para ganhar a vida; outro núcleo focado na vida jurídica de Matt, em que ele e Foggy tentam ajudar um casal a processar uma indústria; e outro focado em um serial killer que está amedrontando Nova York.

Embora esses núcleos possam parecer distintos e bem definidos, em alguns momentos da história eles se entrelaçam e possuem ligações, no entanto, não é sempre que Quesada consegue desenvolve-los de maneira eficiente e coesa, tornando o gibi confuso em alguns momentos.

Apesar disso, o quadrinho possui uma boa condução de narrativa, que explora muito bem a figura paterna do Demolidor, que hora é visto como um bom pai, que incentivou seu filho a estudar e ser melhor que ele, outrora é retratado como um pai rígido, que bateu em Matt em alguns momentos e estava se afundando na bebida. Embora Matt reconheça que no seu ato final, ele fez algo para seu filho se orgulhar.

Essa relação do Matt com seu pai é muito interessante, pois é da raiz do personagem a contradição de que, mesmo Jack ganhando a vida como um cobrador de dividas para máfia e como boxeador, ele a todo momento incentivava Matt a estudar para se tornar o oposto, mas toda noite, ao se vestir de Demolidor, Matt encarna essa característica de seu pai e vai resolver as coisas com os punhos.

A very good mini-series, constructed as a thriller where DD is on the path of a serial killer.

I usually don't dig much serial killers stories. There are a few exceptions of course and this one fits in. There are some good false leads, a twist I didn't saw coming and a motivation tracing back to DD's very origin I thought was rather well handled.

The major flaw is the introduction of the Santerians, a group linked to cuban Santeria magic. Funny thing, I came upon them for the first time a few days ago in Spiderman's Amazing Grace and thought they sucked.
Well, apparently they sucked from the beginning! Introduced for no particular reason but to fill at least one redundant issue they come and go without leaving a trace in your memory and have absolutely no use in the main plot.

Artwise the book is great. Quesada's cinematic storytelling does wonders and his exaggerated incarnation of DD is awesome, truly making our favorite horned head NY's Batman.
A very special mention to Richard Isanove's amazing colors has to be made.

Daredevil becomes involved with an eye-taking serial killer while tangling with a new Caribbean-themed superteam known as the Santerians.

An interesting premise with the serial killer who turns out to be the Matt-obsessed abused daughter of the man Matt rescued in the accident that caused his blindness, but ultimately Matt isn't directly involved with the killer until the last minute. The Santerians, who are somewhat interesting but not really given much depth, seem hardly connected to the story aside from giving Matt a foil for his strange handling of the killer. Quesada's art is evocative but a sharp contrast with Alex Maleev's gritty realism in the mainstream Daredevil comics that were published in the same period.

Ya not too good. I'm still trying to process it, but from what i gathered this a serial killer story, not a interesting one at all, but a serial killer story. So what was bad? Well the story was boring and i was confused half the time. And can someone please tell who that random hero gang was in the book? I have no idea who they are or what significance they had in the story at all. Also as in the title they do try to bring Daredevils dad into it and to make it about his connection he had with his dad, i don't know, all i know is that it didn't work! The Artwork was also, not my cup of tea, it reminded me of Dark Knight Strikes again artwork, and thats not a good memory. Overall this is something I'm going to store in the back of mind and hope to never be reminded of again!

A thrilling murder mystery, with great - albeit stylistically inconsistent - art. The Santerians were totally unnecessary to the story and detracted from the tension building up from the mystery killer's ever-mounting body count. I think if Quesada had focused solely on the murder mystery, this could've been a much tighter - hence, better - book.

Лімітка "Daredevil: Father" є дуже дивною штукою про яку я не впевнений як говорити. З одного боку це історія про те як у Нью-Йорку з'явився серійний вбивця, який, на перший погляд, випадково вибирає своїх жертв, з іншого ж боку це історія про те як наші тати впливають на нас, ще з іншого, невеликого, боку це історія про те як Шибайголові вдається знизити злочинність на своєму районі до рекордно низьких показників, однак через небажання робити щось і в інших районах міста він вступає в конфронтації із новою групою герої Сантеріанами, і з останнього це історія про те як Метт та Фоґі вирішують представляти жінку яка хвора на рак у суді й дізнаються про те, що у неї не дуже щасливий, а місцями й абюзивний шлюб.

Сценаристом та художником цього коміксу є Джо Кесада і з одного боку йому вдається досить вдало балансувати певні лінії, а також гратися з очікуваннями читачами, щодо вбивці, з іншого ж боку та ж лінія із Сантеріанами нехай і є потенційно цікавою й має справді класний поворот пов'язаний із їхнім лідером на фоні усього іншого виглядає не дотиснутою. Як і небажання Метта не виходити  за свою територію та ловити вбивцю. Щодо художньої частини лімітки то тут все загалом непогано й атмосферно, єдине що Метт тут в деяких моментах намальований настільки перекачаним, що Абсолютний Бетмен та персонажі Роба Лайфілда вдавляться від заздрощів.

І знаєте, якби на цьому все обмежилося, я б може навіть хвалив цю серію, так вона все ще б мала мінуси, але досить мила кінцівка з Меттом та його батьком скоріш за все це перекрила. Але тут є твіст пов'язаний з убивцею, про який я не можу мовчати. Суть у тому, що вбивцею виявляється була клієнтка Метта та Фоґі, яка вбивала минулих клієнтів нашого героя аби привернути його увагу. І знаєте мені цей твіст сподобався, він не є поганим і прикольно міняє контекст певних подій. І знову ж таки якби Кесада обмежився цим, то я б цю лімітку скоріш за все тільки б хвалив. Але ні, Кесада тут робить фінт настільки хуйовий, що він може позмагатися з OMD. Виявляється, що наша вбивця була одержима та ненавиділа Метта через свого батька який знущався та ґвалтував її. Хто є її батьком? Чоловік якого Метт врятував у дитинстві і через якого втратив зір. І от мені просто хочеться спитати у Кесади "Навіщо?".

"Daredevil: Father" міг стати чимось цікавим, нехай би і мав певні проблеми, у нього є непогана ідея та загадка, цілком добротний малюнок, але фінальний твіст настільки сильно збиває з ніг, що просто перекриває все хороше, що тут було до нього.

Isso daqui é SEN-SA-CI-O-NAL. Peguei no sebo uns anos atrás e redescobri recentemente quando estava organizando minha coleção. "Demolidor - Pai" é uma graphic novel escrita e desenhada por Joe Quesada e que é colocada facilmente na lista das melhores histórias do heroi. Paradoxalmente, apesar de tê-la na coleção, nunca tinha lido.

Na história, sendo bem curto e grosso, Matt Murdock precisa lidar com a chegada de um novo serial killer em NY e dá de cara com um caso que parece ter uma estranha relação com seu falecido pai. A partir disso, novos personagens e situações vão sendo introduzidas e desenvolvidos. Só sei que, como todo boa história de mistério, quanto menos eu falar, melhor.

Só sei que me deixou mais tenso do que a maioria dos filmes de thriler que assisti nos últimos anos e, nessas três edições, a história conseguiu me mandar para "direções falsas" muitas vezes. "Demolidor - Pai" é uma minissérie que funciona muito bem como um stand alone, basta você ter uma pequena ideia de quem é o personagem para lê-la, e é boa demais. Uma pena que a Panini não relance a um tempo (não que me lembre pelo menos) mas corre atrás de ler isso daqui.

I wasn't sure how I was going to like this one at first. My first impression was that daredevil looked kind to overdrawn and top heavy, and I wasn't so keen on how vicious his dad was shown to be in the early parts of this book. I thought that it went against the core of the character and added a rather dark, and unnecessary aspect to DD's backstory.
However, the art quickly grew on me. It's kind of a fun mix of Miller and Mcfarlane, lots of good color and shadow use, with dramatic details. The story is likewise interesting and complex. Not only does it talk about the legacy of DD's father, but of many character's fathers, that either tie the characters back to DD or each other. It was an interesting concept that I thought might sound kind of dumb on paper, but ended up being compelling.
And yes, my fears about about good old Battelin' Jack Murdock were likewise put to rest.

I ended up super enjoying this one and recommend!

Come sempre tavole, colori e storia belli ed interessanti...molto molto curioso ciò che ho trovato qui.

This volume was such an interesting story, with everything tying in in a beautiful way, and with some spectacular art as well!!

Mas outros legados ficam em evidência nesta história. A de um ativista milionário que também funda um grupo de vigilantes para limpar o seu bairro do crime, tal como Daredevil o faz em Hell's Kitchen. Este milionário mantém publicamente o legado positivo do pai, morto violentamente por criminosos, embora saiba que o real legado foi um de corrupção. Os cruzamentos entre estes dois heróis serão sempre amargos. Já Daredevil terá ainda de enfrentar um misterioso assassino em série, que se parece especializar em matar e tirar os olhos a ex-clientes da firma de advogados de Matt Murdock, a identidade secreta de Daredevil. Uma ameaça que lhe está mais próxima do que suspeita, na forma de uma cliente que quer processar uma empresa poluidora pelo cancro que lhe provocou. Essa HQ tem uma lenda. Achava que nunca ia conseguir completar essa minissérie e que o número que a conclui nunca havia sido lançado no Brasil. Então encontrei a minissérie completa no sebo online Mercado do Gibi e pude, finalmente, ler toda ela. Eu não tenho certeza se cheguei a ler os dois primeiros volumes ou não, o certo é que se passaram doze anos desde o lançamento até agora. Mas superou minhas expectativas. A trama é bem construída - com exceção das citações dos Orixás caribenhos que, para mim, foi um desperdício - e a arte é ótima. Claro, algumas muitas vezes vários painéis da memória de Matt Murdock se repetem. Mas é importante ressaltar que eles tem seu papel na narrativa. Quesada brinca com as nossas expectativas e, apesar de entregar um criminoso fácil de desvendar de certa forma, a mudança que ele faz no final da minissérie é muito boa e, também, dá todo um novo sentido para a origem do Demolidor. Por isso, o nome da mini, "Pai", tem mais a ver com esse fator do que com as ações do pai de Matt, Jack 'Batalhador" Murdock. E por quebrar toda essa expectativa, esse quadrinho se torna intensamente empolgante.

Daredevil Father is a standalone mini-series from Joe Quesada, a once editor in chief of Marvel responsible for all the stuff you love about 00s Marvel, but only gets credit for the stuff you hate.

Daredevil Father is a hazy and somewhat overly-metaphorical story were Matt Murdock swings around Hell's Kitchen and things happen around him (like a serial killer and a team of stereotype superheroes) as he reflects on his father's death.

The story sounds like a ball of boring nothingness, and at some points it is. What you get from the story will be based on you as a person and how you enjoy story. Personally, I enjoyed albeit it was a tad predictable, with an end development that comes out of nowhere, even though it does play nicely into the books theme. Its a book about fatherly mistakes, and how we can still grow to respect and learn from them, there mistakes and all. It is a beautiful notion one that would be better if the plot was more engrossing. Overall I didn't dislike it, but didn't love it either.

Quesada also does the art in this book, and while it's not my cup of tea it does fit the bill well enough to be readable.

Erano anni che Quesada non disegnava più nulla, e si vede chiaramente che è fuori forma nei primi capitoli. Poi migliora e torna quasi ai suoi standard come disegnatore. Non che per questo mi piaccia di più: il suo stile l'ho sempre trovato sopravvalutato, specie in come tratteggia le figure umane. Sembrano sempre mal proporzionate, tarchiate, quasi grottesche, ma senza volerlo.
La storia in sé è una di quelle che mi fanno dire "perché?".
Perché la Santeria? Un gruppo di personaggi a metà strada tra malavitosi e vigilanti, senza senso in generale.
Perché riprendere l'anziano salvato da Matt bambino a costo dei suoi occhi, per renderlo uno spregevole criminale?
Perché credere di voler fare una opera che parli del concetto di padre e buttare tutta una serie di tavole a caso che non c'entrano nulla?

Onestamente, poteva rimanere a dirigere la Marvel senza tornare a scrivere storie. Magari può disegnarle, ma ha fior di sceneggiatori al suo servizio: che li usi.
Non va oltre la stella, con tutta la buona volontà che posso metterci.

Jamais vraiment lu de comics sur Daredevil à part ses crossover avec Spiderman... Déjà je trouve les dessins vraiment, mais vraiment lait. Des fois on dirait que les hommes ont des tumeurs aux visages. Aussi des fois Matt est aussi musclé qu'une bodybuilder sous stéroïde pour redevenir maigrichon trois pages plus tard.
J'imagine que l'histoire du tueur en série aurait pu être intéressant, mais j'étais trop focus à comprendre l'intérêt de la nouvelle team de super-héros. Aussi Matt a toujours été aussi... immature ? "je déteste tout le monde" "je tape les super-héros qui s'approchent de mon quartier" "je défonce la gueule à un drogué". Sur le dernier point, je ne m'attends pas à ce que les américains comprennent qu'une addiction est une maladie mais bon, paye tes "héros".
En plus, Matt est assez nul dans tout le reste, comme il parle à sa cliente, comme il traite Foggy (qui a l'air d'avoir passé la 50en le pauvre). Bref, faudrait que je trouve d'autres comics, mais si c'est le ton des histoires de Daredevil, je vais lire autre chose.

The quality in this was like a metronome, one moment there’s good art and writing, and the next is completely disjointed and looks straight out of a mad libs magazine. In one panel Matt looks amazing, and in the next his grin has like 50 teeth and he’s build like an oversized amazon box. Foggy looks like a depressed pinball. And then back to Matt actually looking cool.
We even see a team of mercenary (?) heroes who are way too op for their own good, even going as far as to drop Matt from several stories, mess up his already damaged eyes, and nearly give him a stroke. They don’t show up again or really hold any relevance to the story.
Also that entire last issue was so… confusing? What did the dad have to do with anything? What even happened after Matt approached him? What did this have to do with dads besides everyone hating Jack Murdock??

Daredevil es un personajaso pero tan imbécil como él solo.

Matt nos cuenta una historia de su infancia, historia en la que vemos como Batallador Jack apalea a una persona porque lo contrataron los de la mafia de Hell's Kitchen. En paralelo, Daredevil tiene que pelear en contra de un asesino en serie que saca los ojos de sus victimas.

EL asesino se llama Jonny Cuenca pero lo que esconde es mucho peor de lo que él piensa.

Me parece una muy buena historia que sufre de guionazo porque tratan como a un reverendo pendejo a Matt igual que el número anterior que leí.

No me gustan los dibujos porque se lo ve muy tosco para mi gusto pero, me parece una buena historia pese a todo, un 3 está perfecto

Sarà l'imprinting (la prima storia che ho letto di Devil è Il Diavolo Custode scritta con Kevin Smith), ma Quesada riesce a dare a DareDevil un tocco, un'epicità, una serietà nelle sue storie che altri non riescono a dare. Il disegno poi, con questi personaggi ipertrofici, enormi, malati, oscuri e con dei colori vivissimi e pienamente nelle mie corde.
La storia infine è semplicemente stupenda. Una storia piccola tutto sommato, molto introspettiva, intima (non solo nel significato, ma anche nelle azioni e nelle scene d'azione) di quelle che (forse) la Marvel non riesce a fare più e che fanno tanto anni novanta e che mi mancano tanto tanto tanto. Bellissimo.

Tenho sensação de que essa é uma história que podia ser maior e mais relevante
Os grandes plots da trama são interessantes e a solução final é supreendente Joe Quesada consegue entregar uma história convincente do Demolidor , tira o personagem da zona de conforto e de quebra produz umas das páginas mais bonitas com o personagem.
Sinto que a trama policial do serial killer poderia ser melhor desenvolvida embora prenda atenção fica em segundo plano quando a gente compara com as demais situações propostas ao longo da história como a aparição dos orixas

The foreword started to turn me off first. He suggested that it would be a better story if more characters (specifically Steve Rogers) were physically abused as children. (I possibly misunderstood, but I don’t think so.) I found the storyline alright, but not necessarily new. I found the drawing style very distracting, as the characters had so much muscle that they started to be shaped like balls. — especially since DD’s appeal is his underdog/“the little guy” nature, it didn’t fit for me.

Overall a pretty good Daredevil crime/mystery story. I found it because it was on sale, otherwise I might have never bought or read it. There is a sub-plot involving a vigilante team that kind of destroys the pacing about midway through the story. But aside from that, I thought the mystery aspect had several good twists and turns. I also really liked Quesada’s unique art style.

This book is something of a convoluted plot doused in sensationalism. But for the interesting ending, it would be a real pass. Even the ending’s cleverness might not be worth the one-noting of the characters throughout.
