Rose gets her long-awaited invite to attend a magical university on the island of Academia. But what happens when she ends up at a different academy from those she knows and trusts— in a co-ed dorm room? She’s thrust into a world of dark magic, temptation at every turn, and a threat she can’t protect herself from because first-year students aren’t supposed to use their magic.
And when she’s caught trying, she’s made to wear a magic suppression necklace. Can her roommate and his friends protect her? And what if the threat hits a little closer to home?
Bedlam Academy is a spin-off of the Bedlam Moon Trilogy. While you don't have to read Bedlam Moon Trilogy to understand this new series, it may provide context you'll appreciate.
Tropes and universal fantasies This is a full-length novel with adult content.
A cousin to Billie Eilish (though she's never met her in person), blood descendant of Wild Bill Hickok, and a long line of artists and creators, Kathy Haan believes the secret to telling a great story is living one. The second youngest, in a massive horde of children between her parents, she did her best to gain attention and kept everyone entertained with jokes and wild stories.
She lives a life of adventure with her hunky husband, three children, and Great Pyrenees in the Midwest United States. While new to fiction, you might’ve seen her work in Forbes, where she’s a regular contributor. Or, in Notoriety Network’s 12x international award-winning documentary, #SHEROproject.
DNFed. The writing was all over the place. Characters were hardly one dimensional. The amour of times in one character the same thing is re explained is horrible. It’s almost like the author kept forgetting they already explained something and just kept going back over it and mostly at times it wasn’t needed. Also I’m sorry, my reading time is average 2 minutes per page. Why am I seeing 25-45 minutes for ever chapter when the book is only 200 something pages long. I fully regretted everyone’s I picked this up
This is an interesting take on Fae in general. While it’s missing some depth with the characters I’m going forward to listen to book 2. It’s definitely entertaining. The narration is a bit weird. I have never heard a narrator switch the accent on and off for a character. Nor have I listened to a narrator sound the same across all characters with the same accent. Also the pronunciation of some words are just wrong. Not a big fan of the narration. I gave this 3.5 stars and rounded up to 4. The audiobook would be 3 stars.
Love the premise of the book, exactly what I was looking for: however the FMC rubbed me the wrong way and the whole premise of them basically being born and maturing in 2 years? I got some weird Twilight-Renesmee flashbacks that put me off really quickly...
And the fashion choices 😂
There is just some weird stuff in here.
For some reason my kindle notes are not loading for this book, but just to emphasize my decision on not to finish this book, I typed them out for you:
This is the second series I've read from this author. She has a way of ripping your heart out, then patching it up, giving it back to you in even better shape than it was before. Then you're left in her arms, sniffling with tentative tears, wondering when the next hatchet is going to drop. I AM SO INVESTED. My favorites characters: Lopey Jax and Kieran. I would give my last buttered roll for a redemption arc for him.
I found this book through Instagram and have been sooo excited to finally experience Bedlam Academy. It’s a why choose, fated mates story with vampires, fae, and other magical beings. Sounded perfect for me!
Unfortunately, the writing felt a bit chaotic and I often had trouble keeping up. Fantasy usually need solid world-building early on, but there was very little of that. We’re told it involves Earth, yet the plot takes place in another dimension? What magical creatures actually exist? Do humans know about this other realm? I had a lot of questions throughout the book and very few were answered. This ruined the experience somewhat for me.
That said, it does get better as the story goes on, and by the end I was invested enough to continue with book two 🤭
I had high hopes for this book series. The quotes I saw looked good but in the end the book was okay. More 3.5 stars. I will try book 2 to see if it gets better because the storyline idea is actually a good one. Where my disappointment came in was how quickly it seemed to move and yet not move at all. Like what actually happened in this book? Not much. She met some guys, barely attended school, got att*cked, and then it ends. We barely see her actually doing anything. It was disappointing to only have plot surrounding her finding her mates and nothing else. I think maybe book 2 will have more plot now that certain things are more settled so I can’t wait to see that. But one character I’m not naming is so stupid it hurts at times. And not in the like he can’t add 1+1 but he constantly jumps to conclusions and then does the stupidest sh*t and wonders why everyone is upset with him. He also holds grudges against a literal child for something she couldn’t have prevented and again wonders why he’s not liked. He’s not even a real bully. He truly has just put her life in danger over and over and even his “besties” are like dude!? Wtf?? Idk. I hate that I can see her just forgiving him when he better grovel and sooo hard. This book in my opinion was trying so hard to be dark fae and just wasn’t at all. But again it has promise! It can be a great story if we actually get plot outside of her relationships with boys.
Saw a Reel on this and got excited cause Fae, mates, magical academy...
I was disappointed to say the least.
She's instantly dating a foster brother of sorts, but wants to have as many mates or more than her mom (who has 7), so he agrees to share her.
She's in a coed dorm room, not just a floor, the room itself. No bathroom door, no shower privacy (broken). A couple of chapters in, she's having sex with the roommate, then a couple of chapters later, the roommate's best friend/roommate next door and mating. Still hasn't had sex with the boyfriend, but had a threesome with the roommate and best friend.
Speaking of, she meets a girl the first day named Penelope, and calls her Lopey, anything other than that would have been nicer.
She's being targeted cause she's a royal, but doesn't want anyone to know, but her last name on paper at school is the ROYAL LAST NAME.
Come to 75% of the book, and apparently now has 2 mates and a soul bond. Still in first term. Still being targeted.
I feel like it was rushed. I ended up spending more time squirreling because I was bored and finding ways to distract myself while reading it.
I feel like with a little more finesse this could be a really good series.
I dnf. I don't like when the mc expects everyone to be okay with sharing them, but won't let the people they're dating see other people. It makes no sense.
Rating: 3.75/5 Spice: 3/5 This is the first book that I have read from Kathy Haan. I picked up this book to read because I saw a synopsis on Tik Tok.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The world created was an interesting mix of fae and human. The presentation of the fae species was a different than most other books, and was really unique. I haven’t read anything that had a similar type of fae as the Luna fae.
The characters in this book are fairly well written. It is super easy to tell which characters you are supposed to like, and which ones you are supposed to hate. Everyone has their own personality, and for the most part are super lovable.
The one thing I didn’t like about the book is how all of the action seems like it is squished into one section of the book. This book is over 300 pages, and I felt like the build up to the climax of the story was very rushed. That being said, the plot twists in this books aren’t basic ones, and they truly are twists. This book does end on a big cliff hanger so be prepared to pick up the second book in the series.
This book is a reverse harem book in terms of the romance aspect. This book also deals with fated mates and mates. Rose the main character has many partners at the same time. The sex scenes range from sweet to steamy, and there are plenty of them throughout the book.
3.5⭐️ - really loving the story, the beginning almost had me DNFing though, the writing was jumpy and disconnected but definitely got better as we got in.
Rose, high Princess of the fae, is finally allowed to attend college. With her brother and boyfriend at a different school to help protect the bloodline, she has to make a way for herself at this school. She is attending under a different last name, and hoping to keep her identity a secret for as long as possible. Her whole plan goes out the window when several people figure out her secret ton the first day. While some agree to keep it a secret, like her new friend Penelope, others hold it over her head like her neighbor Kieran.
While attending school, Rose also plans to explore the possibility of multiple mates, just like her parents. When her new roommate Jax makes her feel some kind of way, she is worried what her boyfriend Mekhi will think about finding someone so soon after arriving. When a handsome stranger, Theo, is thrown into the mix, as well as Jax’s friend Deakan, she is quickly overwhelmed. Along with this; there is a threat to her life and to her family, just just has to figure out who is behind them.
Pretty good, I’m definitely curious and will keep reading!
I really enjoyed the story line and the characters and the world building, but this book still needs some heavy editing. Spelling errors, missing words, at one point one of the MMCs name was spelled differently. A bracelet suddenly turns into a necklace. Little things like that. I also wished there was more build up or tension between the love interests. It’s like there’s an attraction and then all the sudden they are getting busy and in love. The spice is clunky at times but towards the end I started to get fully invested so the story itself was worth the read.
I usually love books like this and this one was no exception! It a great story and the world building was great even without reading the prequel series! The only reason I’m docking it stars is the way the characters would talk kept changing grammar wise and it took me out of the story sometimes. Things like “I am going to do this” rather than “I’m going to do…” other than that it’s a good story and I hope the next book it fixes some of the issues I read! I really want to keep reading!
2.75 ⭐️ The story was pretty entertaining at first. I was interested in the potential but the more I kept reading the more I kept just skimming ahead. It wasn’t my favorite writing style. There are several typos that threw me out of the story. It’s not an awful read and if you’re looking for something that feels similar to zodiac academy you’ll get that in this book. The characters in this series don’t feel as developed as they are in ZA but I could see the inspiration. I’m all about supporting indie authors. Read it and tell me what you think!
I really wanted to love this book. From the moment I saw a teaser on TikTok, I added it straight to my TBR. But after a few chapters, I just couldn’t keep going—and that rarely happens for me.
The bones of the story are strong, and the premise has so much potential. But it desperately needs heavy editing. The prose often felt weighed down by flowery, overly fluffy wording that turned simple thoughts into long, tangled sentences. It made the book hard to follow at times, and occasionally it didn’t make sense at all.
If this book were professionally edited in the future, I’d happily give it another try, because the story itself seems promising. But right now, it just wasn’t for me.
Rose wants to have fun at Uni just like everyone else, however she doesn't want them all to know she's a princess. She wants several mates and doesn't realize when she does mate one, onesies & one is soulmate. Among all of this is also her family, boyfriend and first really good friend. She overcomes a lot and in the end learning a lot about her mates & herself along the way. I read this book before her mother's so I'm going to go ahead and finish this series before I read the beginning.
Just what I needed after the female blue balls I got front the Flames of Chaos series. This was quick, to the point, no added fluff kind of Fae fated mates romance. No big surprises, little cliff hanger and easy read reverse harem. While I’ll admit there are holes in the story that don’t really fit, the writing isn’t anything spectacular and it’s certainly the opposite of a slow burn, it’s what exactly what I needed.
This second-generation story centers on Rose, the High Princess of the Fae and Vampire courts, as she navigates her college years and discovers her identity. Rose is determined to embrace the same vibrant, interconnected relationships her mother has. I appreciated how quickly she found her soul-bonded mate; it added depth to her journey. However, the cliffhanger at the end left me feeling heartbroken. I can’t wait to dive into the next book!
DNF at 24%. This obviously hasn't been edited, there are so many inconsistencies, like literally this guy isn't wearing a shirt and then immediately is wearing a shirt. She FMC is annoying, immature, and cringy. ALSO there's a thing about the fae adults maturing quickly and actually being 2-4yo which just gave me the ick.
This book has good bones but the story is rushed. The world building is really good and interesting but the story skips ahead, a lot of moments are left out and character building is erratic. I plan on finishing the series but this had the potential to be epic and has sadly fallen a bit short.
I really enjoyed this book, the fact of so many different species of fae and shifters and not knowing who is good and who is evil, a princess who doesn't want anyone to know she's a princess and loads of other twists and turns, I just want to find out who is trying to hurt her and why and what they are going to do about it, straight onto book 2 it is to try and figure it out
●RH/why choose ●🌶🌶 ● fated mates ● friends to lovers ● enemies to lovers ● insta attraction
I didn't mind how it started out, but I grew increasingly frustrated at the FMC until I reached the end and simply could not stand her. The MMC's were interesting, great and diverse. The story was okay but by the end of the book, all interest in buying the next one in the series evaporated.
One I don’t get why she can’t use her magic (I don’t care about school rules obviously she was trained and skilled and no risk,) I also don’t get the guys, or the story… it’s so vague. Lots a words yet nothing actually happening.
Action packed, MATES! Strong female character!! Couldn’t put the book down so excited for the next. This needs to be read by anyone that loves a book you can’t put down up all night & wishing there was a second already!!
I didn’t hate this book. It was an easy read for sure. There were some weird discrepancies and icks for me when it came to word choice. Will I read the second one? Meh. Do I regret this one? Nah.
This read like the author was strictly against insta love but then that's exactly what happened. The pacing was completely off and the characters "couldn't live without" the FMC after one day. I'm still contemplating reading the next book but it's unlikely. The rating of 3,8 is surprising.
I have to be honest, I don't know if I truly gave this book a chance, but in my defence I was two pages deep and the narrative continued to say fae hands this, fae ears that and such. Synonyms won't kill you.
DNF at 60%, overall could use some fine tuning and extra editing. The magic system had too many moving parts for this level of writing. There was insta lust and love with very little character support. It has potential but just wasn’t quite there for me.
I don´t like the author's approach to explaining the idea of being with different mates and how the FML had that way of thinking. Also, some concepts are used throughout the chapters, saying the same thing repeatedly.
