Hunger Games: Vampires Edition.

Sabine serves a vampire as his "familiar", luring his victims so he can feed and then disposes of them. Every so often, and especially now that the vampire population is dwindling, a set of trials is held to determine which family's familiar will be turned. Twenty families nominate their familiar and an unknown number of familiar may win.

This was wild! It was fast paced, action packed, bloody, gorey, descriptive, interesting, and I LOVED it. I found Sabine a bit whiney but it worked for her character. She really was the only familiar in touch with her humanity and moral compass the most. Nikolas' backstory has me incredibly excited for what's to come. This was such a great surprise. A bit of a cliffhanger ending but I cannot wait to see how everything plays out in book 2! 100% recommend!

Full of action and adventure

After a long time I am reading such an interesting Vampire story and I must say it was action-packed and thrilling to read. The cover photo of the book is very intriguing.

The story is about Sabine who has lost her parents when she was young but her life transforms when a Vampire mysteriously appears in her life and decides to take her in. When she grows up Sabine's skills are put to the test.

I really loved the adventures she went through during her test. The author's writing skills are flawless and she has written everything in so much detail that I was glued to the book. It was unputdownable. I kept thinking what was going to happen and I finished reading it within three days. I will definitely recommend this wonderful book to everyone who loves reading Fantasy and Vampire related books.

My review

Before diving into the review I would like to thank the author Emma Boxer, for generously offering me an ARC of the book “Under the blood red moon”. All thoughts & opinions are my very own, and this is an unbiased review.

Okay now let’s get into it.

Show me a book that has got you hooked from the very first sentence.

Me: Takes out the copy of “Under the blood red moon”

“When you’ve buried enough bodies, you find that each one has its own specific aroma”

Chills…..literal chills. So the story line goes when Sabine, a child who lost her parents is taken under the custody of a “guardian Angel” or is it?

Oh please, to make things easier it’s a vampire, a mysterious and handsome one at that and offers to take her in as a familiar!!

Her job? Think again what her job is….
She has now got to hunt the kind of prey only a vamp desires🧛

Hardcore training huh?

The novel starts when Sabine is all grown, so it’s like been 10 years since she was taken under the care of a vamp.

So she still has a beating heart, all hale and healthy?
Well yeah!! Serving as a familiar, she hunts down prey( humans), more likely seduce them and bring them over to be killed.

And along the journey she has developed skills, which cannot be put in a real world. Unless you want to be a top class assassin 😎

So, when they have reached of age, they are now to enter a game of trials to win her the chance of immortality!!

Ta-da

I’m totally getting here “hunger games & maze runner vibes” here

It’s a series of three sets of trials against other familiars of different vampire families. And things get super complicated, and I mean very much, when she meets up with her contestants.

A word bomb here:

There is a gorgeous lethal women Andromeda “Drea” , a badass female.

She takes badass to a whole new level , so when Sabine strikes a relationship with Drea, I’m always in crossroads, can she trust her? Can she not?
And to make things hard,
she calls her princess….
The entire relationship progression is so cute or is it?😏 but when Sabine gets betrayed…… I’m not gonna spoil the whole fun here now😌
But let’s just say that I support them 🙂

Then there is a mysterious brooding man:

What? I mean what? This guy gives serious serial killer vibes but yet comes out as a saviour? Is it possible someone can be both? And what’s happening here? I’m getting a whiplash with his emotions. Get it under control, dude. Someone smack some sense into him, well that, Sabine does. But, just but.
He has an agenda? An ulterior motive?
Makes it even more flavourful. And shines a whole new light on his character.

Won’t spoil it now, you are almost there.

And, don’t get me wrong but…
But let’s just say I support them too 🙂

And to make these trials even more complicated, there is a child thrown in this mix.
Alice, an innocent child who doesn’t even know what a vamp is …….

Boink!!! Gotcha!

Truth be told, on a personal note Alice gave off serious “Esther vibes” from the movie Orphan. 😎

And Sabine feels like she is responsible for this kid, she takes her under her wing, so that she survives these brutal trials.

Sabine needs to get through this trial, and get out of this with her humanity intact. And most importantly, her life intact.

Unlikely alliances are made, just to be tested.

Yet, there is hope.

And what happens next forms the rest of the crux of the story.

The ending….. 😩bam the ending, has got me reeling and I want more. I want to know what happens next. And I want more.

The only down part in this novel was that it ended.

And it seems we dont have to wait that long for the next instalment in this series, as it is getting released late this year. This is part of the duology. The next book is under the title “Under the blood red Dawn”

This is the first time I’ve read a queer romance/ thriller books and I’m not disappointed.

The character development is quick and progressive in the plot.

Devoured the entire book in one sitting.
Might as well add this debut novel is FREAKING GOOD.

I’m so elated to have made the choice to read this book, and can’t wait to dive into the next book as it is in my TBR.

Thank you so much to the author Emma Boxer for this ecopy of Under The Blood Red Moon. This review is my honest and unbiased opinion.

When I read the blurb for this novel I was intrigued. Humans being a vampire's familiar and the said familiar hunting for their blood and doing trails to become a vampire is a different concept to me after reading lots of vampire novels, I needed to see how this played out.

Well all I can say is, it turned out bloody marvelous!!

What started off as a 'i'll just read one chapter' turned into reading the full novel, I just couldn't put it down.
My anxiety was on high alert as I rooted for Sabine, Drea and Alice. Actually I was rooting for Ash, Jared and even Nikolas as well.
It was hard to pick a side throughout this book. All the characters were excellently carved out and each had a quality to them that made them likeable.
The storyline itself was greatly developed, the descriptions carefully played out that it felt that you were there with them, the suspense of what was coming next definitely had me holding my breath at times.
The twists and turns throughout had me on the edge and I was particularly shocked by one towards the end. I think I actually sat with my mouth agape!

I absolutely loved Under The Blood Red Moon, it's a unique and marvellous vampire novel that I haven't seen done before and I immensely enjoyed it.

I can not wait for book 2, after that ending I need to know what happens next.

So I had no idea what to expect from this book which is one of my favorite ways to go into a book. I absolutely love the idea of vampires and this imaginative world of familiars being human was brilliant. The story of Sabine wanting nothing more than to become a vampire was nothing that I expected. This story had wonderful twists and turns that reminded me of the Hunger Games with some Interview With a Vampire mixed in. It was wonderfully gruesome and gory so tread lightly if you have a weak stomach. Sabine wants nothing more than to protect a child that was thrown into this wild game of trials, however if a child is innocent will she stay that way if she survives? When you’re just trying to survive is it wise to build relationships or at least begin to build them? The characters were wonderful and had some interesting backgrounds that I didn’t see coming. I’m throughly looking forward to the next part of this story to see how it ends. I have my theories but I don’t know if I’m right because this story I thought I had figured out threw me for some wild loops, twists and turns like the best kinds of rollercoasters. Emma Boxer has a beautifully twisted fun mind that shows how creative she is with this book 1 of a duet. If you enjoy vampires, subtle romantic moments and blood give this book a read.

Under the Blood Red Moon is the debut book by indie author Emma Boxer. I was very happy to have the opportunity to review her first book.

The FMC Sabine, a vampire’s human familiar, as she enters into trials to win the opportunity to be turned herself, which is very much reminiscent of the Hunger Games! Having served as a familiar to vampire for the last ten years. I like to refer to the humans she hunts and disposes of for her “guardian” as takeout. HA! I’m a riot. Not knowing much about vampire culture or other familiars, she is unprepared for what she is about to walk into.

When she awakes to be surrounded by other familiars fighting for their immortal opportunity, she realizes just how serious the stakes are. Here she meets several other characters; Drea (Andromeda), Alice, Ash, Jared, and Nikolas. Mmm.. Nikolas. Without giving too much away, they must compete in deadly challenges, and not all of them make it out alive.

During all of this, Sabine struggles with her decision to become a vampire bride, because of the lack of preparation, training, and truth from her future sire and because of her attraction to another competitor. All the emotions!!

The end leaves you with a mild cliffhanger and leaves you longing for more! What happens to her love interest? What happened to the other competitors? What will happen with her sire? I need answers, man… I can’t wait for the next book!

Thank you to Emma Boxer, who gave me a digital copy of Under the Blood Red Moon in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book is described as the vampire version of Hunger Games and that statement couldn’t be more accurate!

After previously reading and enjoying an Emma Boxer book I saw this was written by her and I knew I needed to read it! The thing that sold me on wanting to consume this book was the authors interesting take of vampires and familiars. As a massive Sabrina the witch fan this book definitely has similar vibes, well if Sabrina was a vampire instead of witch! None the less I loved the unique take in this read.

Under the blood red moon is not only full of adventure but it has twists and turns that really keep you locked in and wanting to just devour the book in one sitting. I definitely felt like I was watching a movie with how well the characters and their surroundings were described.

I enjoyed reading about the trials and the fmc fighting for her chance at immortality along with the romance that is sprinkled through, this is such a well rounded book that leaves you wanting more when the author inevitably leaves you on a cliffhanger at the end, I really hope we get book two soon because I’m literally on the edge of my seat writing this.

Under the Blood Red Moon by Emma Boxer

Hello everyone! I have been on fire recently with reading some fabulous indie authors. I even stretched outside my regular Why Choose genre for this latest read and boy am I happy I did!

I will be the first to admit that I am a vampire rookie. This story was more than just vampires though. It was a plot driven look at how people under pressure and duress overcome an extreme challenge. This book was so intense and emotional that I found myself reading it while waiting for traffic lights to change and waiting in line at Starbucks. I was reading everywhere to just absorb this read.

This is about a "want to be" vampire and her discovery of herself and humanity while she struggles to win a chance at immortality. The extra tension from multiple possible romantic partners drives the emotions even higher. There were tears (mine and hers), tense moments, and a surprise twist. I loved it! I can't wait for book 2 of this duet.

I devoured this book in under a day! The concept of vampire human familiars was very interesting to me. That cliffhanger has me dying to read book 2 already! I have to know what happens next. The world building and character building were good, and overall, I was able to visualize as I was reading. The trials were gruesome and intense. I thoroughly loved them. That second trial did make me a bit queasy with all the saw movie feels. I highly recommend to those who love Vampire reads!

This book is no to low heat, not warranting a pepper rating. There are some insinuations to desires. A kiss scene, a bite scene, hand holding, etc.

I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest opinion, and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.

What a totally intriguing book!

The concept of this book is hunger games style fight to becoming vampires, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I read this book in one day.

The premise was well executed, and although Sabine was the main character, you can’t help but cheer on the supporting characters!

There are several vampiric aspects to this book that may seem like you’ve seen it before at first, but it’s a guarantee that the incorporation is different than anything else.

The character development and world-building was great, and the end has me on the edge of my seat for the second half of this duopoly!

I definitely recommend this read!!

Note: there is some light horror and gore in this book, discretion is advised.

Overall I really enjoyed the plot. It kept me interested the entire time. Sabine and Drea are adorable and I’m definitely rooting for them. I liked the other characters too. And I think the action of the trials was really exhilarating. I’m so curious to see where book 2 goes!

If you enjoy vampires, the hunger games and reality tv shows (cuz come on I couldn’t be the only one picturing the common room from one of those competition shows), then this is for you!

The story is really unique and fresh, I don't think I saw it done before.
I loved that the book had a proper ending without a cliffhanger. The love triangle was not a typical story that we all saw before.
Great debut!

This book! Wow.

I was super lucky to receive an e-ARC of this book last month and as much as I’ve taken my time with it, that’s because I’ve been savouring it as much as I can!

If a Hunger Games style competition between vampire familiars competing for immortality sounds like it might be your cup of tea then this is the book for you! It’s incredibly fast paced and action packed, with well written characters and relationships. There’s a love triangle and a beautifully written sapphic romance!

With high stakes (sorry, had to get a vampire pun in somewhere) and exhilarating twists throughout, this book was so hard to tear myself away from! The ending was fantastic and I am so looking forward to picking up the second book in the duology as soon as it releases!

Every time I thought I’d guessed what the next plot twist would be, I was sooo wrong! This book keeps you guessing constantly and the trials within the competition are so cutthroat that you can’t stop reading.

Sabine is such a strong main character and I was rooting for her from the outset. I loved how badass she is whilst having such strong morals and being so genuinely kindhearted. The characterisation was so strong throughout, yet never at the expense of the twisty, adrenaline-fuelled plot.

Emma is definitely an author to keep your eye on because with this as her debut? I can’t even imagine what she’ll give us next. Phenomenal. If I could rate this higher than five stars, I would!

I absolutely adore anything with vampires in it, so i was super excited to receive an arc of this book!

It is hard to say anything about this book without spoiling things!
But Sabine was such a lovely main character, her thought process and growth where interesting and i cannot wait what will happen in the sequel!
I would have loved to see a bit more of the love triangle, as it felt a little one sided but there will be a whole other book in which that will hopefully get more attention!!
