Blaine's Beast

Rate this book
It's the coldest night of the year--the kind of cold that sinks its teeth into the bones of anyone unlucky enough to find themselves at nature's mercy. Frostbitten and exhausted after getting kicked out of his home when he came out to his parents, Blaine is about to become the forest's next victim.

But when the howling wolves surrounding him turn out to be a pack of cursed shifters who only want to help the trespasser on their territory, Blaine's bad luck takes a turn for the better. As Blaine begins to uncover the secrets of this strange place straight from a fairy tale, he discovers that its beastly master may be more than he appears...

this is honestly awful. zero connections, zero chemistry, completely unjustified insta-love, we don’t see the important part of the relationship, terrible characters (most of them don’t have more than a couple of lines) and the plot is a big mess.
i could write a more detailed review, but i already wasted too much time with this.
read at your own risk.

also, i refuse to call this a beauty and the beast retelling. that’s my favorite tale and this is nothing like it. they don’t go together.

You know that afternoon movie that usually passes on TV in the weekend? That movie that is full of cliches but you still love it because you got exactly what you were expecting? This book is the same. It's full of cliches, but a good story, I didn't feel all the chemistry I wanted but was surely entertaining, you get exactly what is described in the summary. It's a great book to read if you don't have any pressing reading or just want something fun to get you out of your literary depression!

It just kept getting worse and worse.

My expectations going into this were low. It is, after all, a gay werewolf fairytale retelling romance. Despite my expectations, for the first chunk of the book, maybe even the first half, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought this was a solid 3.5 star book. Around the halfway point things started to get pretty silly, and the last third of the book was unbearable.

I didn’t care about any of the characters. I think I was supposed to feel the warm love of their pack dynamics but the supporting characters were rarely present and had little screen time. For no particular reason, the only one I cared about a little was Birch.

Blaine - and what a horrible name that is - was absolutely dumber than a bag of hammers. His ex said Blaine needed someone to look after him and honestly he was right. Blaine is entirely ill equipped to exist in the world.

This is a hardcore instalove book. The main characters sleep together essentially the moment they meet, and are thinking in love terms after a day and a half.

If this had stuck to being a Beauty and the Beast retelling it might have been a little silly, but it would’ve been fine. When, in the last 30-40% of the book, the author decides to throw in a lot of fluff about a supportive grandfather (authors of these kinds of books love the homophobic family/supportive grandpa dynamic for whatever reason), a psycho ex, and two back to back kidnapping intrigue plot lines - that really pushed the book over the edge. Within a few pages my mental rating of the book dropped by almost a full 2 stars.

This only really came up at the end, but I don’t think the author has much grasp of geography. Blaine is snatched away to somewhere supposedly close to the equator, “where the veil is thinnest” or something like that. The wolves want to stay because they love the tropical jungle and the warm beach. After a lifetime in the “snowy mountains,” Blaine’s grandfather is grateful to retire somewhere warm, and arrives to their new home in a Hawaiian shirt and straw hat. The country?

Argentina.

Argentina? You mean the country South Pole expeditions launch from, that Argentina?? Argentina and the US are about the same distance from the equator. Some states are closer - in the case of Hawaii, closer by a thousand miles. They’re in a part of the country that touches the ocean so they’re not even in the northern part of Argentina.

Argentina is not considered a tropical country. It ranges from temperate to arid, with temperatures that tend on the whole toward cold. They’re tired of the snowy mountains? What, like the snowy mountains that Argentina is known for? Patagonia??

I truly think the author must just have chosen a South American name from a hat. Why not go for Costa Rica or Panama? Brazil?? There are so many options for warm, tropical, coastal countries near the equator. How could you get it so wrong??

Truly, this book started out well but just got worse and worse. The author also vaguely threw in knotting and self lubrication at different points, I think just because they’re expected tropes of the genre. They clearly were an afterthought of an addition and could easily - preferably, in this case - have been skipped.

This was a cute retelling of beauty and the beast. It def had the Instalove vibes and Blaine was waaayyyyy more forgiving than I myself would be, but let’s be real; would it even be beauty and the beast if the beauty didn’t have the survival instincts of a fruit fly? Beast had all the broody vibes that pull you in and Blaine was a good counter to that. The whole evangelical community thing was a little too relatable to me, but horrifyingly accurate. All the pray away the gay stuff and dislike of everything outside the community was very real. Unrelated note, did anyone else get thrown off that Brad was the name of the villain in this book after reading Bro and the Beast?

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: homophobia, religious bigotry, hypothermia, gun violence, death, grief from death of loved one, corrupt police actions, domestic violence, family disowning

This was a pretty good retelling of beauty and the beast.
Its authentic and somewhat still follows the original storyline that makes the original works and felt magical.
Blaine was nothing like Belle tho he was way way better character.
Pretty predictable since I know what happened in the original story but there are still some moments that I couldn't predict what would happen next, near the end the story kinda dragged a bit although I appreciate the last chapter scene you'll know it when you read it.

So far, one of the best beauty and the beast m/m adaptations I've read. Both mains are appealing, and this leads to a good balance of personalities. We don't have a Mary Sue and an ass, which can be the big issue with adapting this story. And the way the curse is managed is also pretty creative and appealing.
One peeve of mine, Argentina isn't a perpetually warm tropical jungle place. It is either not Argentina or the author didn't describe it as clearly as he meant to. Brazil or other country closer to the equator would have fit better the description. Or a more traditional evergreen like forest would have been a good description for the kind of evergreen forests Argentina has. It kind of took me off the narrative, though it is a small thing overall

This book started strong. I devoured the first 45%, even though the insta love was deterring. But the friendship build up of Blaine and the Beast was fantastic. The second half felt both rushed and like it wouldn’t end, because it kinda felt like there was 3 separate endings. I did enjoy it, especially the modern take on the classic Disney story, but it lost me a little in the second half.

Blaine's Beast
by Joel Abernathy was previously published with the title Blaine and the Beast. This new edition has been rewritten by the foundation, remains the same. An MM werewolf retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

Blaine , after being kicked out by his parents for being gay, finds himself lost in the woods on the way to his grandfathers house. Lost and frostbitten in the cold he's rescued by a pack of wolves who take him back to a castle. Here he meets a small pack whose been cursed and the witch trying to reverse it. Blaine quickly finds himself in bed with the pack leader Rohan, but while he's away he falls in love with the Beast of the castle. As he discovers the secrets and lies he's been told, will his bond with the Beast be enough to break the curse.

There was so much I enjoyed about this one. Especially all the nods and aspects reminiscent to the fairy tale I know. With snowball fights between Blaine and the Beast, the lack of mirrors in the Castle and the crazy ex-boyfriend who storms the castle to kill the Beast!

My favorite part was Beast and Blaine's journey. The way they form a friendship and actually build a foundation. Unlike with human form pack leader Rohan it's complete insta lust. Blaine gives his virginity to Rohan they night they meet, and then he's instantly in love with him, which kind of killed it for me. But Beast and Blaine's relationship makes up for it, in it's sweetness.

Blaine's Beast
is a paranormal MM retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Filled with found family, a cursed pack, walks in the snow, a cheeky grandfather, wolf runs, steam, knotting, and mates.

3.5 stars

Blaine’s Beast by Joel Abernathy is a Beauty and the Beast story and, as this is one of my favorite fairy tales for retelling, I was quick to pick this one up. The story was originally published as Blaine and the Beast under the author’s previous pen name and has been rewritten since then (though I am not clear how much is new). I think how you feel about this one will likely depend in part on how much you enjoy Beauty and the Beast retellings, as I think that is the strongest part of the book. Often with retellings I find that I have to search to find the connections to the source material, but here the story is very clearly tied to the original. There are many similar plot points and characters that fit the original and I enjoyed the way Abernathy really gave this a strong Beauty and the Beast feel. Having the servants be shifters stuck largely in wolf form (versus stuck as household objects) was a nice twist on the original and brought the paranormal shifter element in nicely. Things take a little diversion from the original at the end and the new direction was a little jarring, but overall, the stories link really well.

Though this highly centers on romance, I found the magical/fantastical part much more fascinating. I loved how easily understandable the world was and how their magic wasn't too complicated.

Now the romance... questionable. For the whole first half, this was mostly a love story in the making. The problem was that it progressed way too fast. The first smut scene happens almost as soon as the story actually begins. I wanted more tension especially since Blaine was in a situation with strangers in the woods where people often went missing and he had just discovered the existence of witches. What I would consider a stressful position, Blaine saw it as a mild obstacle which he had almost no problem overcoming and went straight to bed with a person he got to meet over dinner... and Rohan didn't speak the whole time.

If it progressed like that I would have kept it at a three-star, thankfully the second half was way better! The second half begins after the "big reveal" which caught me off-guard and I actually gagged a little but Blaine's reaction to it? No. He was shaken and angry but I guess his brain malfunctioned and decided to go right back to bed and have sex just after that big event. You best believe I would give a few punches and need some time to think but Blaine is just built differently, I guess. Skill diff.

Anyways, the second half really ties everything together, it pulled me into the story. After that, I just couldn't stop reading. I am not a huge fan of Rohan and Blaine is a little annoying sometimes but I couldn't care, because you know why? Because I got blessed with Vera. What a legend she is! I absolutely loved her, such a nasty bitch! Love, love, love her.

Overall, it was a fun one. It went by fast, it was fun and most importantly, it was entertaining!

Beauty and the Beast indeed...

Ok so, I'm not gonna lie, the beginning of this story was slow and I was honestly thinking of bailing but somewhere around 35%, I got sucked in. Also this is a re release of the story as it was originally released under a different name.

Ok so, in here we have Blaine. A 19 year old who was kicked out for being gay and ran into the hollows to try to get to his grandfathers cabin. He gets lost and almost freezes to death but is rescued by some wolves. He ends up in a castle with a witch and a bunch of men. One of whom is a meanie.

Back before he was kicked out, he had a boyfriend who wanted sex but Blaine refused as he was a virgin. Well he was until the evening he met Rohan, the meanie lord of the manor. The next morning he wakes up alone and we start on the beauty and the beast story.

I really enjoyed the overall retelling. I liked getting to know the beast and disliking Rohan. Blaine was dumb but he was young so I was able to go along with it.

The one thing this really needed was a dual pov. It would have helped move the romance along to know what was going on in Rohan's head.

I'm ignoring the whole tropical Argentina thing. Geography is hard yall.

I fell asleep that night with the warmth of him against my side, and as I drifted off, it occurred to me for the first time that I didn’t even know his name.

“Nice to officially meet you, since we had sex and all.”
He grinned. “Likewise, Blaine.”

“I come from here, and my hobbies include being left alone and terrifying twinks.”

“You said we were friends,”
he said quietly. “I can’t say I’ve ever had one of those before.”

“Try to understand, Blaine. This is goodbye for me, and I can’t bear to say that to you.”

I absolutely love Blaine & Rohan! This story was beautifully done, I love them together and their relationship!

I just wish this story was a little bit longer, a bit more of a slow-burn… I loved it regardless but I feel like the story could’ve been more developed.

The side characters were amazing, I love Mattie especially! Absolutely hate Brad but he got what he deserved, thankfully.

Emotionally, it has 3 points, but logically, it has 2 points💫
it was good. A copy of Beatuy and the Beast but Gay and werewolf, I loved it🫂
It can be said that had a relatively good characterization because she only paid more attention to 2 people and those two people did a good characterization for him. The rest of the characters in the story were either not clear or were completely confusing and their actions could not convince the reader because they were not characterized.

Some places in the book, especially the main story of Rohan and etc., were completely dumb, and would you believe that I read the texts 3 times, but I still couldn't believe what happened :)

The story had a good love focus and I liked the relationship between Rohan and Blaine and it showed very well.
The cover of the book is amazing. Just look at the cover photo🥺😭

I really liked this. I mean I thought it was a bit confusing at times… like how did he not realized Rohan and Beast were the same person? Like I thought they laid that out pretty obvious but Blaine was clearly kind of an idiot. Didn’t expect serval adventures and conflicts and wasn’t a huge fan of all of it when really I just wanted to watch them fall in love but whatever.

2/5 on spice. 2/5 on kink. 1/5 on tears. Blaine reminds me of glee and why did I fall into bed with Rohan on like page 5 😂

OK, love this cover! Blaine's Beast is based on Beauty and the Beast with some twists and changes, although the groundwork remains the same. I believe that the author said this was an earlier book that has been tweaked some but mostly stayed the same.

To be honest, I don't know if this one worked for me. It felt very inconsistent with the characters and their actions, and a weird case of insta-love for me. (And I love insta-love when it's paranormal but even this felt abrupt).

I also felt like this book couldn't decide if it was set in our normal modern world, or a fantasy one. I enjoyed the moments with Blaine and Beast the best, that's why the rating I gave it.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Solo no.

Simplemente No.

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

This was just okay for me. I am a fan of Joel Abernathy and Beauty and the Beast is my absolute favorite Disney movie (original animation), so I thought this would be perfect for me. And it's not that it was bad, it just didn't go as I thought it would.

Blaine is 19 and just kicked out of his parents' house for being gay. He starts to walk to his grandfather's cabin in the woods, in the winter, apparently during a snowstorm, and is about to die from the cold when he is found by a witch and werewolves. In this world being a witch isn't unusual, so Blaine accepts that easily enough. When he learns that werewolves exist, that takes some getting used to.

This follows the Beauty and the Beast story line in that Rohan, the alpha of the pack caused the pack and territory to become cursed and suffer being wolves the whole month except the full moon when they can be human. Yes, the cure is Rohan finding love, and yes, Blaine is the person to break the curse. Things between Rohan and Blaine happen extremely fast with Blaine sleeping with Rohan within hours of meeting him. I didn't understand that part and felt things could have been slowed way down between them.

They eventually do fall in love and live happily ever after, but before that they have to ward off Blaine's ex, Brad, who is a police officer and a totally abusive asshole, who is set to kill the man who "hurt his man," meaning Brad saw bruises on Blaine and assumed someone had abused Blaine (ha!) but then Blaine says he was in love. Brad, being the dick he is, couldn't stand that and sets out to prove he is superior to Rohan and goes off to exert his muscles.

The other characters, Mattie in particular, I loved because Mattie is just an adorable pup, also 19 but acts younger and is just so sweet, helps the story move along and prevent it from being too boring or have just this one aspect of Blaine and Rohan.

The ending was too much for me when the witch who cursed Rohan kidnaps Blaine and if not for Rohan biting Blaine to change him, Blaine would have been killed. This was just a lot after dealing with Brad.

Overall, this was just okay and at this point I plan to stop reading books adapted from Beauty and the Beast because I've not had much success with them. I guess I am just a purest in this area. I know some will enjoy this story and I say go for it because I can absolutely see and understand the how the story can be appealing. It just missed the mark for me personally.

GR says 2 stars says it's Just Okay, and 3 stars means I liked it, but while this was just ok for me, it doesn't fall under a 2-star read. This is an average story that I liked certain parts of so am giving this 3 stars.

Trite traditions

Blaine is tired of hearing about traditional lifestyles, religion and how he's going to Hell. Especially when the loving children of god his parents are supposed to be just threw him out in a blizzard with only the clothes on his back. Deciding to take his chances in a supposedly cursed forest sounded better than dealing with his manipulative and emotionally abusive ex, and was a shortcut to his grandad's house. But he got lost in the snow. And wolves found him. What he woke up to seemed like a fairy tale.

Spoilers ahead.
So this has a lot of familiar pieces. The sensitive intellectual, the Beast, the macho knuckle dragger who's after Blaine, magic and curses and wolves, ... It wasn't bad but it wasn't very original, either. The dialogue starts off stilted but starts to flow better about halfway through. A lot of telling instead of showing. And I can't say that the first steam scene was done all that well. Blaine wasn't exactly an enthusiastic participant starting off. Not exactly dub-con but not exactly consent? It was weird and a little off-putting. I about gave up there, honestly. But as I hadn't officially met the beast at that point I tried giving it another shot. The time jumps steal bonding time from the story. The characters are all getting closer, friendships and more among the pack and the 2 main characters, but as we don't see it we don't feel the same closeness we're supposed to believe they do. It left things feeling choppy and abrupt. With a little fleshing out and filling in it would help pull readers into the story. Everyone loves Beauty and The Beast. It's a classic for a reason.

This is a version of “Beauty and The Beast” but from a M/M perspective. This is a good book! There is the selfless hero, the the monster who is not, the bad guy, and the friends. All of these elements work well in this book! Blaine is forced to leave his parents house in the middle of winter for being gay. His boyfriend is no help at all. So he tries to go to his grandfather’s house in the haunted forest. He does not make but he is rescued by a strange group of people. Eventually he becomes good friends with them and they confide that they are wolves. He soon falls in love with the Alpha, Rohan. The two get along but the wolves are gone for weeks at a time. It is something to do with a curse. But one stays with Blaine. His name is Beast. He and Beast become good friends as well. But there are more secrets and Blaine realizes that. How will these two men have their fairy tale ending? I would suggest reading this book.

It was cute and enjoyable but I personally was quite... over everything that happened after the Brad thing.

Really hoped that Beast and Rohan wouldn’t be one person, even though it was obvious but hope... you know?
Anyways, besides that I liked them, didn't love them though. It was insta-love and they literally fucked the first night they met - while I don't judge that in general, here it went hand in hand with being love right from the start, in some sense at least and that just doesn't sit well with me. It's not really believeable and makes it hard for me personally to believe that there really is a strong bond or anything.

Aside from that a nice little read.

Beauty and the Beast is my favourite Disney film and one of my favourite fairy tales. I've read several retellings and modern day versions of it over the years, and until this book, I would have thought I'd find any version of that story at least passable. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case here.

The worst part of this book is Blaine, who swings between bland and whiny except for the few moments when the plot requires him to Mary Sue it up and save the stronger characters (both in the sense of ability to function and quality of writing). He's also rock-stupid, both in the decisions he makes and his inability to put two and two together, particularly when it comes to the Beast's human identity. ("Hey, Bruce, it's weird: whenever Batman shows up, you're nowhere to be found.")

As if that wasn't enough, he also has some very antiquated views about virginity and an idea that his first time should be special, which would be totally fine if a) he didn't immediately get into bed with the first hot guy who showed an interest, before the 10% mark no less, and b) he didn't whine about having done so for literally the first half of the novel, because it wasn't everything he wanted from his first time. If there was an element of coercion in play, that would be acceptable (though still irritating to the reader, seeing it repeated so often). However, Blaine made that choice of his own free will and whined like a four year old for entire chapters because he didn't like the consequences.

Thankfully, Rohan is a better character, though that's not a high bar and he has his own problems. His constant, unnecessary duplicity is a real problem, and seems to exist only to manufacture drama. If Blaine had any personality or any sense, Rohan might actually have been in danger of not having the curse broken solely because he's absolutely incapable of not lying and/or concealing information long past the point that doing so could possibly benefit him. His backstory also gets really dark, and combining that with his behaviour over most of the novel, I'm wondering how much he's actually reformed and how much of his heroism is really just because Blaine is his property and he's protecting what's his. I feel that if Rohan had really begun to atone for his past, he wouldn't have been so reluctant to disclose the worst parts of it to someone he supposedly loves more than himself, and with whom he wants to build a healthy partnership.

Vera can be entertaining, much like the rest of the pack, but she's more irritating than Blaine in her role as the dispenser of deus ex machinae as the plot demands... except when she can't, because "she's not that kind of witch". This is where the lack of world-building really shows, because we have no concept of what the scope of a witch's powers might be, let alone what the limits on Vera's are. We barely even know anything about werewolves. Spending some of the word count on fleshing out the magic system and traits of creatures in this world instead of Blaine's whining about how he didn't get candles for his first time might have been a better call.

The other side characters range from bad to awful. There's one particularly egregious case where "the sheriff" never gets a name, despite participating in multiple important scenes over several chapters. Even if Blaine doesn't know his name, which would be ridiculous given that a) Tendale is a small community, b) Blaine was dating his deputy, and (potentially) c) the sheriff likely wears a name badge, the author really needed to give him one. If it was plausible for Blaine not to know it and really that hard to find an opening for him to learn it, Brad could have referred to him by name at some point.

And oh, Brad. I never thought I'd see someone who made Gaston look like a multifaceted and complex character, but here we are. Brad is such a mess of nasty character traits that it's really difficult to believe that he functions in society at all. It's also much more believable when Gaston incites the mob, holding a literal magic mirror up to a group of frightened villagers as proof of what he's saying and motivated to do so by wanting revenge against Belle. Brad's motivation is believable, I suppose, but the execution of that whole sequence is a massive low point for the novel. And incidentally, how, in the age of Google Earth and satellite photography, do they not already know there's a castle in the woods next door? It's never established that the castle is magically hidden- in fact, it's important to the plot that it not be on multiple occasions.

The book actually continues past the ending of the original story and the breaking of the curse, introducing a new antagonist and some increasingly silly plot points before it finally sputters to an end. The whole final section felt like padding- except for some revelations that could and should have been integrated into the story up to that point, we could very easily have done without it.

The writing style is satisfactory enough, but the description and narrative get a bit flowery in some places, which I found tiresome by the end. I also wonder how much of that was left in as padding to increase the word count without actually having to add anything to the story. It's really a shame, because there were so many opportunities to flesh out characters or add necessary context to the setting, but the author was apparently not interested in taking any of them.

This has a good start for me but apparently, my thrill went down the hill for certain reasons. Anyway, funny speaking because I know I kinda signed up for it for the smut part but to think they hit it on right away made me cackle Blaine said he was protecting his virginity and all but ended up on Beast's bed with the man's engorged flesh in him. So much for being a chaste man.

So a goal of mine for 2023 was to branch out and read books I wouldn’t normally pick up and this 100% fit the bill.

What I liked:
- I love retellings but I especially love modern takes on retellings
- Mattie <3
- How you could kind of match up which characters are supposed to be who from the original Beauty and The Beast story
- Sort of gave me Green Creek vibes

What I’m unsure if I liked or not:
- Pacing. Blaine was in bed with Rohan at about 15% into the book and we hadn’t even learned what Rohan’s name even was yet
- After the initial story arc is complete there’s a twist and then further conflict. Because it happens at about 80% in to the book it’s resolved very quickly which is obviously good because then the story isn’t dragged out but I think this specific conflict could have been introduced sooner in the book so it could have been more developed. I sort of just felt like it came out of nowhere
- Some of the sex scenes were good, I don’t know about the first one though, like I mentioned it happens so quickly. It sort of gave me the same vibe of two people having an anonymous hookup after meeting in a club but because of the story it didn’t work that way and sort of felt out of place

What I didn’t like:
- The first chapter was kind of confusing, I didn’t realize what was going on until Blaine is at the castle.
- I wish the other pack members had more scenes with Blaine. It would have made his care for them and his want to stay a bit more believable

An OK Read.

I have read this book via Kindle Unlimited and this is my personal opinion of this book.
All the characters were 2 dimensional. The beginning was a great opener but then it just meandered along, at such a slow pace, that I easily kept being distracted. Also, I kept checking the page count.
It was very predictable, even the "twist" near the end of the story, and the subsequent outcome was too predictable.
Sadly, when I read the blurb about the book, I was so looking forward to reading it. Unfortunately, the story doesn't live up to the hype in the blurb.
Overall, this is an OK read, but needs more pace. The action sequence was great, but that was only more of a subplot which was glossed over too quickly, as the author was trying to set up the twist.
I have awarded two stars due to the author's fantastic ability of creativity but I just feel the final story just lacks pace, it's very repetitive and it's tedious.
There are many books that have used a "fairytale" as the basis of the storyline, with a fresh take on the story, but with pace and angst, that have been riveting reads.
I think I will steer clear of this author and their books.

I mean… there’s really no going wrong with a Beauty and the Beast retelling. I got exactly what I came here for. Every cliched and unpredictable moment.

Solid, easy, ⭐️ 3.75

Highlight reel - Perfect cleanser, easy read, low angst, shifters, a curse, a modern world setting. A beloved grandfather who marched to the beat of his own artistic drum.

Also, Vera the witch is the GOAT.
