Monsters of St. Mark's #3

Royal Beasts: A Monster Romance

Rate this book
When a two-thousand-year-old curse is the only thing keeping you safe, you should probably just leave it alone.

Here’s the problem—the curse is now breaking itself. The sanctuary is crumbling, Pell’s anger issues come with a new destructive voice, Pie has no control over her spellings, and Tomas is trying to convince himself that, one day, Madeline is going to love being a dragon.

Add in an old friend (minus her couch and plus a big blue bus filled with orphan kids), a new version of Granite Springs where the devil lives in a bar, a hundred monsters reliving the teenage-years they never had, and a date to a prom in 1982 and we’re getting close to the chaos that’s coming.

Other worlds are calling, the new doors act like hallways, and nothing that mattered before matters now. The world is quickly changing and when the curse finally breaks for good—will there be anything left?

Royal Beasts is the third rompy paranormal, shifter, dragon, monster, ancient-Roman-gods rom-com in the Monsters of Saint Mark's series. You can't skip - so it must be read in order. KC Cross is the paranormal/sc-fi romance pen name of New York Times bestselling author, JA Huss.

Whimsical, magical and suspenseful!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙❤️💚🖤
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎🌍
Character development: 😊😄😘🥰
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Pie - she has recently figured out that she is a Royal Beast. At first, she thought she was human, and could remember nothing but her short human life, then later after arriving at the Sanctuary of Saint Mark’s, she discovered that she was really a nymph chimera and remembered times when she was a girl, running through the forest with her friend Pell, a satyr chimera. Though in the last book she discovered she was royalty in an alternate world and was able to overthrow the evil queen and imprison her as a human in a tomb at an alternate version of Saint Marks. She doesn’t know if the queen will ever escape, but knows it is a fitting punishment for what the queen has done to her.

The Hero: Pell - he has always been just a satyr chimera; he is cursed to live at the Sanctuary of St. Marks. Though he has recently discovered that he, too is a royal beast and is really more of a Warden at St. Mark’s. He has his own magic and has a magic ring, so he is able to travel through portals to other worlds and also travel as a man to the local town of Granite Springs. Though he also recently found out that the town is just as much a part of St. Mark’s and the curse as everything within the sanctuary.

The Story: Like the previous two books, this one isn’t just about Pell and Pie. The last book gave us more insight into the other characters. Tomas now has his girlfriend Madeline, and they are both dragons. Tarq (the minotaur chimera), has a woman of his own, a purebred nymph. Though Tarq had to become King when Pie disappeared with the Queen so now, he is ruling that world while his girl is in another world, but safe at Sanctuary. Though Pell knows that as good as things are right now, they won’t stay that way. Something is coming. The Savage Saints are still plotting behind closed doors, and nobody knows what is really going on in the dungeon at St. Marks.

This book was a continuation of the first two books in the series, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. This was such a different and original paranormal story. I loved the satyr’s, the wood nymphs, the dragons, the Eros family (cupids), and more. The story was whimsical, magical and suspenseful. The romance between the two main characters was sweet and steamy. I hope the author does more in this genre, I just love her work.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Jason Clarke and Hathaway Lee. Both of these are terrific narrators and both of them are great at using different voices and accents for different characters, especially Jason Clarke, who does a whole cast of male characters in this one.

What a fucking awesome read!!!!! This whole series has been a non stop ride from start to finish and in this last book from the Monsters of St. Mark's JA Huss took us down the proverbial rabbit hole with hookah smoking monsters and twisted gods who fuck with others just for the fun of it! I think the monsters of st marks aren't the only ones getting stoned I think JA huss might be too!😂 after reading this book! But in a super good way! I've never loved a couple as much as I love Pell and Pie! Together they are fabulous and they have a magic all their own. Getting to know both and all the other monster's has been awesome! I'm in love with them all and getting to see their back stories was heartbreaking but it explains how they came to be at St. Marks. The gods not only fucked with them all but they also made a bad enemy when they left Eros god of love and sexual desire out of their main pantheon and he wants revenge! He fucked up their plans for a young Pie who is a actual princess of the house of fire who was supposed to marry and make godlings with young prince and king to be Tarq but Eros hid her in the human world and left her powerless. Eros is definitely a major asshole but when the truth comes out you will look at him differently I know I did. Pell just wants everything to go back to how it was before the Monsters came. But with getting lost and separated in the magic doors and each seeing what really happened in their pasts and Eros not only turning granite springs into Savage falls where monsters can do what they want and trying to spell Pie into bringing Tarq to him and Thomas in the dungeon helping the risen from dead Madeline become a dragoness it becomes a shit show real fast. And the once adorable monsters like batty,eyebrows and cookie become terrors who just want to fuck and party and when Pie does a spell so they can understand what their saying theirs no going back they want to be free and leave St. Marks. This author is a fabulous storyteller and her characters unique and totally out of this world and I'm a big fan of this series!!! While Pell and Pie's story might be wrapped up theirs more to come in a new spin off series The Savage Rage of Fallen Gods out in summer of 2023! Because we need more from Eros and Thomas and all the others! This is a series that you need to read from the beginning that way you know all the players. Until next time Luv's💕💋

This was EPIC!

Wow... i cannot tell you just how much i love this series! This is an epic finale (maybe) for Pell and Pie's story, and i couldnt be happier. I've said it before, but this author knows how to blow your mind with crazy plot lines and twists. Looovvveed it.

Pell, Pie and Tomas are trying to figure out their new normal. Pell has a crazy new gift that is actually tearing down the sanctuary, Pie is trying to figure out what the devil aka Eros wants her for and what so the keys/doors mean, and Tomas just wants to live happily ever after with Madeline who is now a dragon too.

But things don't ever happen as they should... and things just get worse and worse at the sanctuary. Pie and Pell find out more about their history and how they actually intersect and we discover something quite interesting about Tomas!

Absolutely loved this and can't wait to read what happens next!

I received an ARC for my honest review!

This was such a fun ride!

I mean, the whole plot is completely crazy and all over the place, but you just have to hold on and go along with it, really!

This book is truly original, which is pretty hard to accomplish nowadays, and the characters are truly loveable.

I would highly recommend this whole series.

Pie, Pell & Tomas are back and oh how I missed these characters. Pie & Pell go on a journey to finally stop Eros but what we learn on this journey is eye opening. I absolutely love getting lost in this world. The characters are amazing and story will hook you from the start. I absolutely did not see that ending coming. I absolutely love when an author completely shocks me and K.C Cross aka JA Huss, has absolutely shocked me. The twists were absolute perfection. My mind is absolutely blown. I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. This series is an absolute unputdownable read. I’m so happy that there will be another story.

Pell, Pie and Tomas are back in their epic PNR journey at the Saint Mark’s Sanctuary. Welcome to the world of chimeras, nymphs, dragons, satyrs and many many more monsters that all want one thing….happiness. Well, and maybe a good time too if ya know what I mean! Will Pie ever figure out the curse? Are they all ever going to be free? At times so much is happening I did get lost a little but stick with it as it’s still a fun read. Get ready for trouble and shenanigans in this fantasy PNR mystery with a side of romance. Monsters, Curses and Spells oh My! Told in multiple POV

This 3rd book in the Monsters of Saint Marks Series by the incredibly talented J.A. Huss, writing as K.C. Cross, was everything I could've wanted and oh so much more. We get to go back to the start and watch as everything comes full circle for Pell, Pie, and Tomas, pieces of this intricate puzzle finally falling into their rightful places. Once again, there is much at stake as gods and monsters give our trio a myriad of obstacles they need to overcome, with magic the seeming catalyst for everything that occurs to them. We get glimpses into Pie's past and get to know just how she came to be and the whys of her abandonment. And every single one of these revelations had my jaw dropping as they trickle out at a steady pace, not quite believing what was being told but knowing that in the end, it would all somehow make sense.

I tell ya, that Cross is a genius. I am forever in awe and have probably said just that numerous times at this point in my reviews, of her creativity and ability to keep all of the tangents to this storyline, straight! There are many characters to keep track of, not to mention all the wondrous happenings that keep Pie and Pell on their toes. Or hooves in this case. But getting to go back in time a bit really did start to tie the loose ends a bit tighter with all their previous actions actually beginning to make perfect sense.

The appearance of the mysterious Pressia clearly was a turning point for both Pie and Pell while the ever-present Eros seemed to be the constant thorn in everyone's side. The use of the hallways and doors as guides to Pie and Pell's true life course was wickedly clever and provided that sense of mystery and adventure that I welcomed with every turn of the page.

And let's not forget the wild sense of humor that was evident throughout this well-written series, with each character, whether god or monster, offering up brilliant one-liners that made me chuckle and often. Even when things seemed their most dire, Cross found a way to lighten up the circumstance and allow her characters to laugh and joke with one another like only they could.

This book is not a standalone and you must start with Damaged Gods. It's an extraordinary tale filled with fantastic characters and a society that is as charming as it is dangerous. But with an ending that made me very happy while also whetting my appetite for what Cross will be giving us next in this marvelous world she has created, I very happily give Royal Beasts a huge 5 stars. It's a reading experience like no other and one I won't soon forget.

** Royal Beasts is book three in the Monsters of Saint Mark’s series and should be read after Damaged Gods and Savage Saints. This review may contain spoilers if you are not yet caught up in the series. **

Pell and Pie have found love, and Tomas, a dragon companion of his own. But when Saint Mark's starts crumbling beneath their feet... what will happen to the sanctuary that has become the only home they've ever really known...

Time is running out, and the only way to save everything, is to go back to the beginning... where the 2000 year old curse started...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Royal Beasts was the gripping and fantastical third installment in the Monsters of Saint Mark’s series. Pie and Pell's story is about to find some resolution... but not everyone may survive the journey...
Saint Mark's sanctuary has opened its doors to many monsters and beasts, but everything about how it came to be is shrouded in mystery. Pie's arrival may have challenged the very existence of Saint Mark's, but she and Pell may be the only ones who can save it...
This series continues to be an engaging and sexy read filled with monsters, intrigue, and epic world building. I loved Pie and Pell's romance, and the convoluted road they have traveled to find each other. But when they travel to the past to finally get the answers we have all been waiting for, everything I thought I knew about their stories was completely and utterly not what it seemed... and I expected nothing less from this jaw-dropping fantasy world...
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.
This final book in the Monsters of Saint Mark's series is all kinds of fantastical and complex and mind bending. As I always say, I have no idea how this author comes up with these stories. To get inside her head for just a little bit would be wild, I'm sure!
Pie, Pell and Tomas are trying so hard to save their sanctuary, but the curse that has been holding Pell there for so long is breaking, the walls are crumbling, all the new monsters are revolting, shit's out of control! What a fun journey this final book was!
There's a TON of stuff happening, and honestly for the majority of the book I had no clue what the heck was real, not real, past, future, current. I just hung on for the ride and marveled at how complex and multi-faceted this monster world is.
I can't figure out which character I love the most - Pie, whose whole life has been one big mess yet she still has hope for the future. Pell, who just wants to spend the rest of his existence with Pie, or Tomas, that loveable dragon who exudes a naivety and innocence that may or may not be a total ruse?
K.C/Julie is the queen of the mind-blowing endings that rock your world but magically bring the whole story full circle. This one may be one of my favorite endings yet! I totally did NOT see it ending this way. But, it perfectly sets up the new series that will be premiering next summer and I CANNOT wait for it!
I was not much of a fantasy reader before starting this series, but man did I eat these books up! All the while I was reading, I was imagining these being made into movies and how fantastic that would be.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention all the spells written throughout this book. The way they all rhyme? That's a talent in and of itself right there.
What a fun series this was! I will forever love Pie, Pell and Tomas. And I am super excited for the new series next summer and getting to know the new characters we met in this last book. It's gonna be amazing!
Royal Beasts by K.C. Kross aka J.A. Huss is a book three in the Monsters of St. Marks series. It is not until I start another one of Julie’s books that I realize how much I missed the characters. Pie, Pell, and Tomas continue their adventure together while they each try to figure out how to get their own personal happy ending. This is one of the first books that I have read where I can picture a character’s daily life as movement within a larger game and I believe that is due to Julie’s talent as a writer. I could picture how the Damaged Gods could influence a character’s (player’s) moves within the game. I also liked how Julie gave each character more of a backstory while also showing how they influenced or affected other characters through time or other plateau’s so to speak. As a reader, I have discovered that I need to let go of any preconceived thoughts of where I think a story may go when it is a J.A. Huss aka K.C. Kross book because I could never predict or dream up what her characters may do. She always seems to surprise and wow me. Plus, she provided teasers for new books to come based on the side characters in a blurb at the end of the book, so I cannot wait to see how Julie wields her magical words in the future.
Royal Beasts is the third and final book in the Monsters of St. Mark’s series. This series completely intrigued me from the first page of the first book, and this final book just blew me away. The plot was intricate and complex and fascinating and surprising—and I loved every single word of it! The absolutely Machiavellian way this author’s brain works never ceases to amaze me. As many of her books as I have read, you’d think I’d be able to figure out the plot or at least see some of the twists coming, but… nope. I was completely and utterly dumbfounded by all of it, and I’ve never been happier to be totally clueless. There was revelation after revelation, and I was glued to the page for all of them. I have missed these characters since the last book so much. Pie, Pell, and Tomas are all fascinating, compelling, jump-off-the-page characters in their own right, but when you add in the interpersonal relationships between the three of them (and with the other characters) and the superb world building, it makes for a story you do NOT want to put down. This book and the entire series is an absolute must-read, and I could not recommend it more highly.
My Thoughts:
All I can say about the previous book is that... Tomas and Madeliene have a clutch of eggs and they haven't even had sex yet?!! That is soooo unfair!! And what's that prophecy all about??! And, please, please, please, don't tell me that Pia is dead!!!...
It's been a long while since I've read the previous book in this series, Savage Saints. So, I have to stop and think... who was Batty again?!... It made for slow going.
This book reminded me again how I love the way Jason Clarke gives Pell a deep, growly voice then go soft and feminine when he reads Pie's lines! Kudos to the narrators!
A perfect wrap to Pie and Pell
Okay, so sci-fi is not my normal read but JA Huss aka KC Cross wrote this series...enough said. I know anything written by her is going to blow me away, but my point to all that is.... I am SO glad I took a chance on series.
The Monsters of Saint Mark's and the curse, the sanctuary and how it all fits together is something to behold. This ending....wow, did not see that coming at all. I am so excited for Pie and Pell. My heart hurts for Thomas. I just want to tell everyone about this fantastic story and the ending and how I thought this was going to happen but really this is what happened..and that my friends is how you know you have read something truly amazing!
One last thing, how can I get a bag of rings and a few doors at my disposal? Lol. Looking forward to Savage Falls and more beautifully designed story telling!
Stunning Conclusion!!
This series should be read in order. It is complex, intricate, magical and interesting. Things are changing at Saint Mark’s. The magic is different now too. Pie and Pell are trying to figure out whether breaking the curse is a good thing or bad.
The sanctuary is crumbling. There are more monsters, and they are out of control. Even the nearby town has changed from Granite Springs to Savage Falls. The path ahead will only be revealed by an understanding of the past. The reader gets many questions answered as the characters take this journey.
There is no way to discuss further without giving plot away. Just know this is one of the most unique, original and enjoyable series you will find.
Whew crazy ride
Wow. Just Wow. Um my brain is tired LMAO 🤣😂 just crazy. Did Huss smoke some? Maybe. Where or how does she come up with it? Very crazy wild ride. Glad I seen some review in a book I was about to get. Turned out a reviewer mentioned this trilogy to read beforehand or I would have never known. I think I was to worried it would be a crazy RH book. 🤪 It's not. And happy I will be on the right path when I read the next trilogy? maybe idk how many books dealing with at least one of my favorite characters. Definitely a tree branch of the same tree. SO happy I seen Pell and Pie make some guest appearances in the next ones. That will be nice. Glad I stumbled on the one book I have not read that led me into this trilogy. Now onto the original book I was looking into and had the audio saved in my wish list.
When it comes to world building and twisted, twisted, twisted stories (and I mean this in the most beautiful way), KC Cross (aka JA Huss) does it better than anyone. I felt like I knew a bit of how this story would go, but I wasn't even remotely correct OR prepared for where she took us in this one. Pie and Pell and Tomas are all so intricately entwined and none of them (or us for that matter) could see how or why...until the end of this book. Tomas' epilogue was absolute perfect twisted end (or is it?) to this particular story. The insanity that I never saw coming. If you love paranormal, this series (and this book in particular) is EPIC and beautiful and life affirming. It made me gasp and smile and swoon and I'll say it again, gasp. Looking forward to more!
Royal Beasts is the amazing conclusion to the Monsters of Saint Mark's trilogy and I am here for it! This paranormal romance just hits you in the heart like an arrow from Eros.
Pie, Pell, and Tomas are some of my favorite characters ever. They truly are best friends who work together in this gigantic mess that they find themselves in and I'm such a fan. I love Pie so much. And Tomas lives in my heart and I'm keeping him there.
This book had heart and love and drama and intrigue and suspense and sadness and happiness and so many "ooohhh ah ha" moments. I definitely will be reading/listening to all three books again. And I'm looking forward to the spinoff series coming up too.
I hope we keep seeing more and more of this world and these characters. I would read about them forever.
I absolutely love KC Cross/ JA Huss books! I'm a true fan. Her creativity astounds me. I do not normally like to read/listen to the fantasy genre/trope, but for her, I take a stab at it. I haven't been disappointed yet, and this time is no different! I found myself memorized. My mind may not work like hers, but I love to follow her lead. She writes so well that I, the least imaginative person, can picture it all. The world she created is so unique. I will continue to follow this series/world as she writes more.
Jason Clarke and Hathaway Lee are excellent narrators. They brought this book to life with emotional performances that sucked me further into this world! I especially liked Jason Clarke's performance. This was perfection.
This book has thrown everything I thought I knew about this series to never even getting close to guessing what would happen next… and I loved it!
Beautifully spun words by JA Huss has created a world and characters I will always love. Their choices, their actions and their emotions all leading to the end of this book will always live on in my mind because the kind of emotional rollercoaster these characters take you on make me want to never get off this ride.
I fell in love with Pie, Pell and Tomas right from the first chapter in book 1 and I absolutely love them even more after finishing book 3. I so wanted more after getting that ending and I can’t wait to see what happens in this world next!
Wow KC Cross/JA Huss you are the Queen of the mystical universe, your stories are so compelling and with all the twists and turns it’s hard to know how it will end, and I certainly didn’t see this ending coming. What a wonderful ride, with curses, dragons and loveable characters as well as those you love to hate and those we’ll hopefully meet again in the new series next year I can’t wait, this series has it all.
Pie, Pell and Tomas what a magical ride you took us on, my mind is blown and I wish I could start this series again for the first time. Would highly recommend
This is my new favorite Julie series! I'd give it 1000 stars if I could! This. Was. Incredible! I don't even know what to say. I've been a sobbing mess for about 25 minutes now and I can't even tell you why. I just have SO MANY emotions about the final chapter and then the EOBS tells us what The Savage Rage of Fallen Gods is about and... it's too many emotions all at once... so I've just been crying. This was brilliant, SO FUN, unique, and just perfect 🖤 Tomas is my new favorite character! He's my heart and soul! My everything 🖤 no matter what comes at me in the new series Tomas will always be my sweet baby Angel. I can't wait to see where we go next! On to the next door 🖤
Totally addictive…
Following along on a wild ride with Pie, Pell, and Tomas tickles the imagination and answers so many questions about these compelling characters. But these monsters that have grabbed our hearts are facing a bleak future. Curses abound, choices must be made, and in the end our star crossed lovers may not win. In this tale that could be sad and depressing it comes out instead as a challenge to find a way to save not only their love but their friends. Loved this cool fantasy world.
This paranormal series I will say I have read unlike any other. It just a fresh take on a paranormal world with a variety of different creatures. This is the conclusion to this trilogy of Pie, Pell and Tomas. A LOT had happened here so the reader needs to pay attention which I'll admit I did get lost a few times. This was still a fun read as by the time it ends, it was unpredictable.
Note: Series must be read in order.
Welcome back to the marvelous magical world of Royal Beasts. To Pie and Pell, to Thomas. The monsters and dragon. To Granite Springs. To Saint Mark’s Sanctuary. travel through the hallways of time and new adventures. Wind your way through the doorways and find places you only dreamt about. This is the third book in this series and what a fabulous tale is told, with the potential for a few spin off books. Julie you have done it again. Such a great book and an exciting end to the series I can’t wait for the ones that follow. Loved it .
Take a trip in the hallways with Pie, Pell and Tomas, as they go up against Eros and learn more about their "forgotten" pasts, and the gods that ruled. I have to admit these books (especially this one) have piqued an interest in finding more about these mythical creatures and gods now.
This is the third book in the series that must be read in order. It concludes this current storyline, though more books in this world are planned.
Fabulous story, that took quite a twist. I'm definitely intrigued by the upcoming book to see more from these characters.
**MAY CONTAIN WHAT CAN BE VIEWED AS SPOILERS**
The absolute GODDESS of…what the actual heck just happened?! Lol! “You spin me right round, baby, right round”.
It’s all a game. A crazy, twisty-turny game. If ever there was a book that I wanted to start at the end, it would be this one…oops! Too late, ha! I’m left with a buzzing in my head upon finishing, really.
Characters you can love and hate…and love to hate. A colorful, vivid, storyline. Really good and unexpected. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
The happy ever after...
This has been a lot to take in. It's been a journey of emotions. This book I started tearing up as read the spells because they were heartbreaking. I didn't know when or which one would be the last one. I wasn't sold that there would be a HEA especially after Pia. I do realize that Eros did have the capacity for love, not tenderness or care in the traditional sense but love yes. He chose to not be the monster that he was presented to be. The games were a rush and I need Tomas. His journey is going to be one to remember because of who he is.
Wow! Very unexpected twists and turns. I should have known it would end this way, but just wow! Masterful storytelling with an imagination that blew me out of the water! Jason Clarke was absolutely fantastic and amazing voicing all of the characters, but Thomas and Pell were just magnificent! Hathaway Lee was equally perfect in her performance of all of the characters. I look forward to more of her work. These two, together, were the perfect narrators for this story. I loved it and look forward to more in this realm of magic and monsters. Loved it!
What a fantastic read! I love Pie, Pell, and Tomas. So many questions are answered in this book. I love the mythology that comes in this story.
The curse is starting to break and new powers are coming into the characters. The doors and the rings are more than we thought at first.
We find out Pell and Pie's story from their beginnings. Not what I thought it would be, but OMG so good!
