Deadly Snow: A Snow White Retelling

Rate this book
Not all fairytales have happy endings. That’s the truth. If anything is thought otherwise, be wary. Those people are delusional and live in their own little worlds, always thinking the best of everyone despite the blatant reality surrounding them.

Who am I to tell you this? How could I possibly be so judgmental or downright hateful? I live in the real world, sweetheart. Where good doesn’t always triumph evil, the princesses find out their prince charmings are gay, and life keeps moving on whether the lost princess takes back the throne or dies trying.

R-e-a-l-i-t-y.

Yes, it sucks. That’s the essence of life. Still in denial? I’m immortal and have had the chance to witness many lives. The story stays the same all across the board.

I may as well get on with my story. You can call me Nexa. Don’t remember that name from fairy tales?

That’s because my real name is Snow White.

I enjoy fairy tale retellings, so was interested in one about Snow White. I didn’t realize it was so short until I began to read - more like a short story than even a novella - but that would have been OK. However, the story was convoluted and confusing. The main character is Nexa, but she’s actually Snow White, and it’s not clear which is her true identity. She’s immortal, but how? Nexa isn’t even likable as the main character. All these years she’s had the “Mirror Queen” as her nemesis, but the final showdown is disappointing. There were elements of the original fairytale, but they felt like they were just slapped on, nothing was fleshed out or explained; the plot was choppy. Unfortunately, it read much like a high school short story attempt. I only continued reading to the end because it was so short.

I loved this book because it was a fresh take on Snow White. I’ve read and watched a lot of Snow White editions. I’m obsessed with Snow White, and it happens to be my living room theme. So when I say this take on Snow White is one I’ve never seen, that is saying a lot. I was so intrigued by the new storyline that I couldn’t put the book down. It was so fun to read and it was quick. If you’re looking for inspiration for a story or a nice fast read, you should read this!!

While I enjoy a good fairytale retelling, this was a disappointment. This was fairly short and the story didn't feel developed due to the lack of its length and more detail could've helped with world-building and character development. The concept was interesting and felt promising but the length was its downfall.
