A 100 mph horror fest!

Horror buffs will love this book but, for me at least, there was too much action and not enough depth to the characters. Who and what were the creatures populating this Horde? How had they managed to live undetected beneath the streets of Exeter for thousands of years? How come they possessed a sophisticated technology and yet, at a base level, craved human flesh? How come their leaders spoke English and had English names? Confusing? Well it was for me. In my opinion this story would make an excellent and popular action movie for a (mainly) teenage audience. Even with all its five star reviews this story wasn't for me I'm afraid.

The Exeter Incident is an all out blood bath of a book. Creatures living underneath the city of Exeter make their pretense known in a huge way after the slaying of their princes, creating a barrier around the city that takes out any thing that comes in contact with it. I’m talking full on not existing anymore, there isn’t a trace of you left after you touch this barrier, and that alone is enough to terrify me.

The barrier isn’t the worst part. These creatures are human like, with some of them having a scorpion like tail that can shoot spikes that melt flesh instantly. Tack on superhuman strength and these monsters from beneath the ground we walk on are some of the craziest creatures I’ve ever seen featured in a book.

The Exeter Incident does many things well. One of my favorite things in fiction is when the author doesn’t let anyone be safe. At any point any character that you may care for can be completely obliterated. Call me a masochist, but it makes the stakes so much for tense for me. The kills in this book are brutal, and David Watkins delivers every. single. time. with these kills.

The story is so fast paced, I didn’t even realize when I was close to the end. The way Watkins writes is captivating, I never wanted to stop once I started. Ever chapter ended on a sort of cliff hanger, drawing me in and telling myself for the umpteenth time that I’ll just read one more chapter.

Spoiler, it’s never just one more chapter.

Please pick this book up, Watkins created something thrilling and brutal that I think all fans of horror can get behind.

The Exeter Incident felt fresh and exciting. It was otherworldly and gripping. Watkins genius is his ability to strip away the veil, unleashing the horror contained within.

The Exeter Incident was a fantastic foray into creature feature/cosmic horror. Have you ever questioned why life is so boring? Why nothing interesting ever happens? Well, The Exeter Incident might just make you thankful for your nice dull life. You can’t buy excitement from Amazon, but you can buy The Exeter Incident and it equates to the same thing.

At the heart of this novel is hope. If humanity does nothing else right, it’s their blind faith that everything will turn out well that does give them their one redeeming feature. Watkins examines what happens when all seems lost, and when hope is all that, they have left. When everything is stripped back what are they left with?

David Watkins had the claws sunk right in. I was hooked. Told in multiple POV’s we see the psyche of characters put under a microscope. We see the true character of someone when they are on the edge looking into a dark pit. It stirred a sense of humanity in me – I felt sad, I ached for some to survive and conquer the depth of evil that reside under Exeter’s ground. I freaking love indie horror and this is up there with some of the best I’ve read, tension, pacing, character work, it had it all. If you don’t feel like you’re living through the pages, then pick that book down, and pick this one up.

One thing that hit me with this story was how much I kept likening the events to a city locked down in terror. Murders are discovered in a disused warehouse. The investigating Detectives are hit with the idea that the killers aren’t human, and they aren’t acting alone. The descriptors were brilliant and the war scenes…man this is exactly why I read for escapism.

I was on Kingston’s side from the very beginning. Maybe he isn’t the obvious choice, but he was just a teenager. Haven’t we all made stupid mistakes when we were that age. Peer pressure and hormones are a deadly mix, and they end up doing something they really shouldn’t. His internal turmoil regarding his sexuality was another layer of his character and brought a sense of realness to him.

Many books make claim to be ‘action packed’ but I dare any to usurp Watkins’ ‘The Exeter Incident’. Set in the titular city, a series of bizarre homicides lead to what can only be described as a murderous rampage, by assailants that are as unearthly as they are barbaric.

Watkins is able to give the reader intriguing characters, with flaws and conflicts rising above the desperate and deadly situations in which he places them. Couple this with a buckets of gore and prolific, brilliantly executed action sequences and what you have is a heart thumping, balls-to-the-wall thriller with some pretty neat plot twists.

Highly recommended.

The Exeter Incident is a sci-fi/supernatural horror that opens with a bloodbath absolutely dripping in gore and body parts! It's fast-paced and rammed full of action, suspense, mystery and a lot of violence!

Strange human looking creatures with lethal, spiked tails and the ability to destroy large areas and everything in it in one dark, instant blast, create a dome over the whole of Exeter and then unleash Hell!

When "Fathers" Princes come to harm, he seeks the ultimate revenge on the person responsible. His vicious "Horde" army are released to do his bidding in the most brutal, frightening manner! And then we meet "Mother"....
Horror filled, tense and relentless, this story has an extremely high body count and gallons of blood. This is a big book, but it doesn't feel like it, from the opening page, David grabbed my attention and kept me flipping those blood soaked pages throughout. The writing flowed really well, great descriptions, likeable characters, and a great storyline, all made for a really exciting, high energy read!

This is my first read by this author, I'll be keeping an eye out for more!

This book is awesome. Super fast-paced, action AND horror packed, relatable characters, scary villains. Honestly, everything you could want in a novel! Despite being around 400 pages, I flew through it in one sitting - couldn't put it down!

Reading like a mash-up of The Sweeney, 'Seventies Doctor Who and a particularly gruesome splatter movie, David Watkins' The Exeter Incident is a full-blooded treat. Characters you care about get put through the mill, as a horde of monsters wakes up beneath the streets of Exeter and extracts a deadly price for perceived wrongs. Who are these monsters? Well, Watkins never makes it explicit, which leaves the reader with much to dwell on- but you'll have a load of splashy, gore-munching fun on the way to whatever conclusions you draw. Watkins' cast of humans is likeable and convincing, and he gets bonus points from me for the diversity of his players. I really enjoyed this one, and the reference made to "a village in Devon attacked by wolves" got me Googling frantically, to find if this referred to a previous work.

Immediately on finishing, I bought and read Watkins' earlier story, 'Rhitta Gawr', part of the 'Short Sharp Shocks' series- this tale of two young hillwalkers climbing Mount Snowdon in the shadow of a local legend just reinforced my already-decided opinion that Watkins is one to add to my list of current British horror writers of note.

Fans of action movies and creature feature reads will devour this book!

The author generates real intensity and a sense of panic through a clever use of time stamped chapters. After all, it’s not an ordinary day in Exeter - the confusion, doubt and ultimate suspension of disbelief engendered in the narrative drives through each and every chapter.

I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. I offer a 3.5* rounded up to 4*, but this is solely based on my reading preference of narrative that foregrounds character exposition - I want to dig underneath and understand what makes them tick. The action descriptions predominate and felt like a screenplay through a lot of the read - but hey, there is an opportunity there!

But I can honestly say that action driven narrative fans will love this; the 4 and 5* ratings out there speak for themselves.

Finished this last night. Watkins has proven to be a steadfast writer. I couldn't be any further away from England's Exeter, yet Watkins pulled me into his claustraphobic dome filled with flesh eating beasts. The characters are engaging and real. The creatures are ...well nobody is safe. I loved the tie in with The Originals Sgt Peter Knowles. It was completely logical abd dodnt feel forced as it can at times.

If you want a fast paced creature feature with intelligent characters you can't go wrong with this gore fest.

This was my first book from David Watkins and I have to say it was a very enjoyable read. Set in Exeter (a city I know well) it follows a varied and sometimes flawed group of people trying to survive as monsters emerge from the shadows and start killing the residents. The book was fast-paced with plenty of action and gore and constantly makes you wonder who will live or die. The monsters were great villains, being unique creatures with their own motivations. Overall a good fun read which I can recommend for anyone wanting a fast action-packed creature-feature read.

Ever since reading an initial description of this book, I have been intrigued. I was happy to receive an advance copy to read and review. It did not disappoint! This book definitely has the “Monster of the Week” feel of some of my favorite shows with a hidden species that has been secretly feeding on humans for centuries, but has only now become a visible enemy. The power of this enemy is both devastating and awe-striking with teleporting bracelets and destructive shields. The plot is quite action-packed containing a large cast of characters who are compelling and believable. There is a lot of graphic bloodshed, but it just adds to the overall impact of the story. Again, I love books that paint pictures for me (I know I talk about this a lot), so I don’t mind an extra paragraph or two to set up a scene. The author does an excellent job of this, which can be difficult with such a unique story, but I could visualize each interaction as if I were watching it take place in real-time complete with setting. A very captivating story that I encourage you to pick up!

A very well written, gore filled book about some terrifying creatures. The descriptions of how the monsters attacked the humans was very graphic and I was very glad to be reading this book rather than experiencing the situation. Even though there were many of the “Horde”, they seemed to need direction in order to attack. The main monster was the most terrifying of all. When I read that his tail could cause injuries as well as melt the victim’s skin, I was so glad these creatures existed within the pages of a book rather than real life. The author did an excellent job of making the reader have hope for the people as well as the experiencing the devastating losses. This is a must read for lovers of sci-fi and horror.

There's an interesting structural feature you'll notice the second you start reading this book: the chapter titles in the first third of this novel are all timestamps, and each is only a few minutes apart. That's because everything in this book develops so quickly!
We have a twin thread of detectives investigating a crime scene and journalists investigating a people-trafficker, and before we know if we have death, alien creatures melting people's faces with tail-spikes, and super-powers that can obliterate or isolate anything in their path.
This first part moves so quickly you'll barely have a chance to catch your breath as the situation quickly escalates. Despite this, I felt there was still time to get to grips with the characters - there are rather a lot, and the narrative switches between separate groups of them. Another interesting choice was to give the villainous creatures narrative scenes. These helped to develop their motivation, so they didn't just feel like an empty threat, but a species with their own plan.
I had great fun reading this. The characters are fell rounded, and their relationships believable. The action scenes are particularly well done. It keeps ramping up and ramping up, and the ending is well done, with a pile of bodies left in the story's wake.

The Exeter Incident by David Watkins follows a group of detectives investigating a series of murders. They come to realise that there is more than one murderer, and they might not be human.

This is home-grown sci-fi horror at its best. The creatures are well developed, with a full hierarchy and intricate society that is actually pretty complex. The police procedural element of the plot is peppered with detail, and mixes well with the scientific/technology side of the plot.
Some moments in the plot will leave you breathless, and you will feel for so many characters: on both sides. The Exeter Incident has an apocalyptic quality that shows how different two sides of a perspective can be, and how much things can spiral if you don’t listen to the other side.
This might sound really pretentious, but I’ve never come across a sci-fi horror that is so human before: brilliantly done.

Things start off with a couple of DS’s investigating some murders. As more keep happening there are reports of men with tails and a young boy with black eyes. Of course, nobody wants to believe this until they have no other option. The clock is ticking for the town of Exeter.

Watkins did a fabulous job with this novel. The story pulls you in immediately and keeps you there until the very end. All the action and excitement make this hard to put down. It was interesting to see how Father, Kennedy and the Horde worked to take the humans out. Very brutal! I really enjoyed the creativity that went into the creatures. Incredibly unique beings that would stop at nothing to fulfill their mission.

All action thrill ride

If like me you enjoy a fast paced non-stop action filled story then this for you. A female journalist and partner are following a story and stumble on to the biggest scoop of their lives , the question is will they live long enough to finish it ?. A panicked call draws her policeman husband into situation and a suspect he is searching for is also a player in unfolding drama .

Short chapters with punch. Plenty of action. City under siege. Lots of characters to love and lose along the way. As a reader local to Exeter, the last third of the story really lands in the City Centre and recognisable locations will end up as damaged as some of the characters. I’ve enjoyed reading this one!

A fast-moving and hugely fun monster-fest! The monsters’ world below the ground is incredibly well developed and thought out, and it makes the onslaught in the city believable. Great characters, great monsters, gore and gun fun and even some laughs. Absolutely loved it!

Disapointing

Started off as a good read, then became very predictable. Very poor ending and no explanation as to what the creatures where or came from.
Not a great read by any means

As the city of Exeter is rocked by several gruesome murders, the police initially shocked by the brutality realise their killer is not human and not acting alone. A gang member on the run has to decide who he can trust if he is to survive the monsters. s the city is isolated and cut off who will survive.

A high octane horror scifi creature feature that reads like a fast paced thriller. The humans are multifaceted and complex, the monsters lethal and brilliantly terrifying. The slaughter is gruesome and blood soaked, survival is unlikely, a compelling page turner that will keep you guessing and wanting to know what else is coming!

An added bonus for me is I’ve worked in Exeter for over a decade and could see the places and knew exactly where the battles took place. This is humans against a powerful and deadly non-human force, it is so good and I am annoyed it took me so long to pick this up, dazzling!
