"He did little else during his lifetime but he did once contribute to the gaiety of nations"
-Quentin Bell on Horace de Vere Cole, the mastermind of the hoax

I'm not sure where I first heard about the Zanzibar and Dreadnought Hoaxes (probably through Virginia Woolf), but I heard of this book through a YT video by Zepherus, which I recommend. I received this book as a 2020 Christmas present and read it that evening.

Adrian Stephen, who was the interpreter for the Abyssinian delegation, writes an informative first-hand account of the amusing Zanzibar and Dreadnought Hoaxes and of their aftermaths.

Charming if slight retelling of a modest hoax committed upon the Admiralty and the Dreadnought.

Fascinating that this slim retelling was even ever published.
