I can't stand being your Childhood Friend 02

Rate this book
Will Ryota etwa mehr?

I liked the exploration of how hard it can be to "come out" - especially when you aren't sure of reaction despite claiming it won't bother you if it's negative. The bouts of realism but lack of violence is refreshing.

I was surprised that this - which was originally intended to be the end of the series - pretty much cut out the second couple. It was nice to spend significant time with Aoi and Ryota over the first year of their relationship, as they really figured out how to transition from longtime best friends to lovers.

The big steps were predictable enough, but ones I always enjoy playing out. And even if it's been told a zillion times, coming out to friends and family and settling on post-university careers are major life events that impact different characters in different ways.

I'm glad there will be a third volume with them as working adults, because I'm honestly not totally satisfied with their (initially homophobic) friend's solution to Ryota's am-I-too-reliant-on-Aoi anxiety. He...is. It's not a bad thing, but even if the two of them plan to spend their lives together, it is actually pretty important for Ryota to learn how to separate himself from Aoi to some extent. What would happen to him if Aoi got ill or had an accident? That's way too dark for this series, but the attachment is a little too intense still. It makes me kind of worry about him.

Maybe that just means I'm getting old, because that's basically how Ryota's mother reacted when Aoi's mother accidentally outed them - not realizing she was supposed to keep the relationship a secret once she found out about it.

"I'm not here to give you the third degree," Ryota's mother says, ambushing them the moment she found out, and proceeding to give them the third degree.

Unsurprisingly, both she and Aoi's sister had clocked Ryota's not-so-platonic love for Aoi long before Aoi knew...and possibly before Ryota even knew/acknowledged his feelings were romantic. Her main concern is whether Aoi, being a nice guy and a great friend, went along with the romantic element just to make Ryota happy.

The way she phrases it isn't great - she thinks Ryota might've pressured him into responding to his selfish feelings - but I kind of get where she's coming from. There were things I didn't love about Ryota's attachment to Aoi in the first volume, and it's really nice to see him making progress on the communication and jealousy fronts in this one. He is trying. And Aoi does love him, a little bit later but just as passionately. So they'll be fine.

I'm also happy to see Ryota finding a profession that really speaks to him. In a way, their friend's advice was decent: rather than trying to completely excise Aoi's influence and importance to him from his interviews, he used their relationship and his feelings to discover a path and a company that spoke to him. As he eventually tells Aoi, he'd been pretty bothered by how difficult it had been for the two of them to get an apartment together as roommates. It'd been worse when he'd discovered that most queer couples are treated as "roommates" - meaning a more limited pool of housing and harsher judging - than as a legitimate couple.

So when he finds a company that treats same-sex couples the way they would a heterosexual couple, Ryota feels like he's found his calling. It's a nice way to develop him without actually changing his essential self that much.

Definitely will be fun to see them in the working world! There will be more of the second couple popping up, since Aoi's going to be working in a clothing store with one of them, so things will probably get a bit more plotty. I'm not really expecting a jealousy storyline, though, since they resolved that pretty well.

Aoi and Ryota have settled into living together at college, but that makes it even more challenging when they're home visiting family. Their two closest college friends, Aoi's sister, and both of their mothers learn the truth of their relationship in this installment, though at least Ryota's mother says she won't tell his father. We haven't really seen either of their dads, and Aoi's isn't there when he tells his mom either, so it's unclear how they'll react to the news. Ryota struggles with his own emotions a lot in this installment, between how to present himself in his job applications and worrying that he may have forced Aoi into their relationship. These both work out eventually, though not without some interesting conversations and encounters - we even see Ryota completely drunk. Their trip at the end seems to end things on a high note, though they can't actually turn in the forms they want to. There is at least one more volume left to look forward to as we'll see the boys navigate their working life together. Hopefully it will go as well as college seems to have worked out.

Força cuqui, saludable i versemblant!

Both art and plot are delightful! I cannot wait for the next volume. Also, this volume had a lot more romantic scenes compared to the first volume….. I understand that sex doesn’t necessarily mean love, but Ao initiating a bunch of moments helped show that he truly does love his friend rather than going along due to coercion.

I like this series becuase it's sweet. I don't know if it would be my first pull to reread though. I did love the first book though since there was more tension and conflict.
