Strange things are happening in Killar, Texas. For years the chemical plant on the edge of town has been polluting the town. The dirt, water and sky have all been affected by the pollution. Most animals have sadly died from the pollution mutating them... but some have thrived.
Maybe it’s the Godzilla fan in me, but if you give me a story about creatures mutated by radiation… I’m in love. Killarney Geckos was just that. A lightning fast creature feature that feels like it was straight out of the 1950’s but made as a modern film. Jonathan Tripp writes like Richard Laymon left behind all of his… ick… and said, “hey, I want to write like R.L. Stine.” It’s fast, filled with action, and most importantly fun. Really hoping we get Killar Dinos! K thx.
'Killar Geckos' is my first introduction to Jonathan Tripp's work and it certainly won't be the last book I read of his, it is unique in style, has a lot of action and I couldn't stop reading until I finished it. First of all, the author has an entirely unique style of writing. This is reminiscent of a rough form of spoken word. With his unique way of writing Tripp stands out and he does it well, because his way of storytelling has a lot of action, is very visual and above all very imaginative. By always making the right alternation between events, the reader sees the story as a movie in front of him. And the action in some passages is excellently interspersed. Exciting battles between the heroes and the geckos are interspersed with humor. These twists and turns are excellently done. Furthermore, to my mind, this is a story born of bewilderment. 'Killar Geckos shows in a very accessible way what impact environmental pollution can have on nature. That this effect is also ultimately life-threatening for humans, this novella thus shows in a slightly ironic tone. And so this becomes a pleasant first introduction to the work of an author I will certainly read more of. His unique writing style combined it his enormous imagination and subtle irony have made me reserve space on my bookshelf for more of Jonathan Tripp's work.
I'm sad to say I have to DNF this book, and it isn't without trying. The idea is THERE, the setting is THERE, the characters - although very confusing (I'm sorry but how and why is there a drunk old man who just beats up teenagers for walking down his street??) are THERE - but this just desperately needs editing. I'm not a stickler, I can look past a goof here or there, but until page eight, there was a typo on every page, and even after that, it was probably half the time. I want to ROOT for indie authors, and like I said, l the story is there - it's just delivered in a way I couldn't get through. Maybe I could have figured out why the old drunk man was bullying teenagers - if I could have kept reading. I can complain about the flow and sentence structure all day and if that was all that bothered me I would have definitely tried to make it all the way through, but without reaching out to the author to see if they need a editor recommendation, I just couldn't do it. I intend to read more from this author because their ideas are interesting and fun, and maybe if Killar Geckos gets a reprint with a hefty portion of revising, I may give it another go, but for now I'm sorry to say I will have to remove it from my kindle downloads unfinished :(
A quick and killer (no pun intended) creature feature that made my skin itch. In movies I always hate seeing things like rats, snakes, bugs, etc crawling in and out of bodies. I don't care if it's the mouth or ears or they've gnawed their way through flesh somewhere, it gives me the creeps. SO there's plenty of that here! This is a quick story, almost too quick. I was not able to really get to know any of the characters in a meaningful way... but maybe I was not meant to. Like I said, quick and pretty bloody, lots of deaths, etc. It's a fun time! I think it could use a tad bit more editing for typos, grammatical mix-ups, etc, but I think this could be the start of something!
Brandon and his family are new to town. The town has a chemical plant in it. There are rumors of pollution. A larger than usual gecko is seen. Then the horror starts.
