Scotland’s magic has been trapped ever since the Battle of Culloden when a powerful witch bound it to keep the power from the British. It’s gotten worse over the centuries, and now a stranded fae prince-turned-professor has one chance to bring the Highlands back to life.

‘The Fae’s Gamble’ is the first book in the Office of Highland Magic series, featuring a department of academics keeping track of Scotland’s magical peoples and relics.

Fern McEwan has witch blood in her veins. She doesn’t know that and only cares about finishing her thesis. Out of options, she has to accept a mysterious fellowship offer from an unknown Office of Highland Magic. When she realizes the invitation centers on her breaking a centuries-old curse, she’ll need convincing to finish the term, no matter how cute the department head is.

Dr. Calum Welsh used to go by ‘Your Highness’ and not ‘Professor.’ When he found himself on the wrong side of a magical barrier after the Battle of Culloden, he was forced to trade his sword for spectacles and spent years researching ways to get back. He might have found his last option, but it’s a gamble, and a crush on Ms. McEwan isn’t part of the lesson plan.

After a hundred years, the curse threatens to rip the Highlands apart and banish its magical residents forever. Both Fern and Calum will have to put aside their differences and their growing attraction to try and release Scotland’s magic before it's too late.

Please note ‘The Fae’s Gamble’ is an adult paranormal romance with sex scenes, graphic violence, and swearing.

I was so excited to start the new year, with a new author, and Ferrell Dawson exceeded my expectations! The forward alone says: For anyone who’s first crush was a “Lord of the Rings” character. 😉

Initially the premise of a Paranormal/Fantasy romance, in an academic setting, in Scotland, obviously convinced me to request an ARC. And I absolutely, DEVOURED every single page.

The characters had so much depth, especially for such a fast paced story… but my favorites were (the FMC) Fern, and Callum 😏 (the sexy Scottish professor, protecting a magical library), and Emmett the enormous Wulver (aka big softy, Scottish werewolf, that always has shortbread cookies/biscuits.) I thought I knew a bit of Scottish mythology, but this story surprised and impressed me! I loved this interpretation of Seelie vs. Unseelie, and every other myth involved!

If you’ve been looking for a fantasy romance, with characters older than their early 20’s, this is probably everything you’re looking for. Their chemistry & sexual tension were intense from the moment they met, and never stops. The church scene… 🫦*bites knuckle* 👀, and everything else that happens in “The office of Highland Magic”… (even if the CANE SCENE wasn’t really my style), I can’t deny, that everything felt very unique. And I was hanging on to every word. Where can I apply for my own Scottish professor?!?!

I couldn’t put this down, and read it in one sitting! If you enjoy a fast paced fantasy or paranormal romance, I HIGHLY suggest this wonderful book! I’m already looking forward to the next installment, and hope this series continues! 😈 This book releases on January 13th!

Thank you to Ferrell Dawson for the opportunity to read this ARC from Booksprout in exchange for my honest review.

Good cover but it doesn't really capture the main characters as depicted in the story.

The book had my interest up until chapter 12 then from there it was more of I am too far in to quit, so I finished the story.

I am confusion. Fern apparently interacted with other magical beings, vampires, djinns are mentioned, so why was she so surprised about Callum and the rest of the community? Up until the end, that plot hole didn't make sense to me.

The smut/sex scenes were cringe. Reminded me of old novels sex scenes. Oh take me! More and more! Now!
My friend 😬.

The push-pull with miscommunication/lack of communication as a plot device was annoying as fuck. The means by which the curse is broken is also very predictable, you can guess it from the start and also wasn't satisfying.

Then, finally the curse is broken, but we don't get a peak into Faerie land? Like then what was the point of the book? Why build up the reader with having been away from home for 300 years then in the end it is just a mention of Callum+Fern visited there from time to time?

The only consolation is the antagonist is done with in like two pages, which again, was too fast and therefore not satisfying.

I wanted a fun romance with an interesting plot for a quick binge after not being able to read for the first few weeks of the months. This delivered. I loved the Scottish mythology and lore behind it. I loved the academia setting. I loved the older FMC and salt and peppered MMC.

I also fell in love with Mara from the beginning… and a succubus love story sounds GREAT. Cannot wait for book 2.

Adorable and refreshing!

This was such a fun and enjoyable read! I loved the whole cast. Fern and Emmett the most! The plot kept my interest the whole time, which is huge because I'm a notorious skimmer. I loved the small, refreshing updates to certain tropes. The ending was a bit rushed but it was so dang adorable that I didn't mind one bit. I can't wait to read more in this world!!

*2.5 stars

Finally have some time after moving to reflect on my reading for the last couple of months.

I follow Molly on Instagram, so maybe my expectations were a little too high, but I was a bit disappointed by this. I remain hopeful that something else by the author will better suit my reading taste.

I was excited by the setting (loved my trip to Scotland last year), and the initial concept drew me in. The fact that the character(s) were not the typical 18-22 year olds, and it being centered around higher academia, were also initial draws.

Unfortunately, I wasn't too far in when I came across aspects that turned me off a bit.

I quickly found the concept of the FMC being so surprised by her coworkers being supernatural beings when she herself had studied and lived around other supernatural communities to be a plot hole that was never really addressed, and therefore annoyed me a little.

I'm not a fan of the "miscommunication" trope, and this maybe could be be described as an adjacent "withholding information" trope, which I might like even less.

At the end of it all, the conflict with the antagonist was over so quickly that it was almost pointless even to mention.

Meh

Another mediocre KU release. Switches between third-person limited and third-person omniscient points of view seemingly at random, which was more than a little irritating to me. If you want a quick read that requires no quesswork and offers no surprises, I suppose this would do.

and magic pussy saved the world again. it wasn’t my book. it would’ve been better if fmc had had a different personality.

from the start i was getting irritated by fmc. she was internally whining how she was such a martyr for her siblings that she left her cool scholarship and nearly missed her application for doctorate. but from what i’ve already seen, half of the mistakes were hers. she was so disorganized, with her head in the clouds. and i think she loved being a martyr and blaming others for her miserable life.

fern should’ve checked her attitude. she met her boss for the first time and went on being a brat. it was disrespectful and not cool.
“My specialty is determining which mythologies and places ever existed and which were fabricated, Calum [called him by the first name without his consent on doing so].” She raised a brow and mimicked his expression.”

“What of Scotland? Her magic and creatures?”
“Myth.” Fern rolled her eyes.”

she literally wanted to write a doctorate on magic so why she was surprised to meet not human creatures?😀😀😀 this fmc was getting to me. wtf was wrong with her?

“I understand that you’re confused, but I don’t take lightly to anyone insulting Calum.”
Fern bristled. “I don’t take lightly to being lied to.”
“You weren’t,” Mara countered. “You accepted a position with the Department of Highland Magic, did you not?”
“Excuse me for not thinking that was literal!”
“I’ve read some of your research. Were the elves and the djinns you met with literal enough for you?”
“Ugh,” Fern groaned, plopping back down on”

wtf. as far their relationship went, they were still boss & employee.

“I didn’t even get to bury her…” Calum’s voice cracked. He recovered quickly, but Fern jumped out of her seat. Without thinking, she threw her arms around his neck and burrowed her head in his shoulder.”

oh fuck off. 🙄🙄🙄🙄 i got it. she was a pick me girl.

“When was the last time anyone ever cared so deeply about what you want?”

“Like most caretakers, Fern assumed she was a burden at all times and struggled to accept Calum’s statement at face value.”

at that point they were colleagues or in boss&employee relationship. 😀 i was on my way to HR.

“Calum saw Fern slipping into panic and grabbed her face, kissing her. He watched her in distress and long buried instincts kicked into overdrive. Fern made a muffled gasp before she leaned into the embrace without a second thought.”

she ran. 🤡🤡🤡 now they were playing tag?

“Ask me what happens if the curse isn’t broken in time, Fern Mòr McEwan.”
Fern dropped her glass and ran.”

she wanted to tell her brother about the magic. but wait, it wasn’t permitted to tell anyone but… fmc was special - right? and the rules didn’t apply to her. 🥰🥰🥰

“Mara and Emmett’s warning to not tell anyone about Scotland’s magic echoed in her head, but she figured this might be a grey area.”

i don’t like books where one of main characters withholds pivotal information from another. in this book mmc didn’t tell fmc they were mates.

for an academic, fmc had no logic or knack for analyzing situations.

Thank you, Ferrell Dawson, for the E-ARC for The Fae’s Gamble. This is my honest review.

I originally stumbled upon this book after seeing friends online rave about how much they enjoyed their ARC reading of TFG, so I knew I had to sign up!

The Fae's Gamble is a 5-star read for me since it is the type of book I love to read.

One of the main characters is Fern McEwan. It was refreshing to discover that Fern and most of the characters in this book are above 30. I haven’t seen MC’s in this age range that often yet, but also that has been my own reading experience so far.

Fern gets thrown into an adventure of a lifetime of uncovering secrets that turns her world upside down, alongside an alluring man that so happens to be her professor/boss, Dr. Calum Welsh.

Things I enjoyed in TFG:

-Mythology references!! I was very excited and intrigued to read a story about Celtic/Scottish mythology! My past reads have centered around Greek mythology, which I love, but this was certainly a nice change of pace!

-Speaking of pace, this was a quick read for me. Dawson expertly balanced out the medium/fast writing in this book, with its shorter (to me) amount of pages. 218 pages according to Amazon. I was fully engaged from beginning to end. The story did not feel rushed or overwhelming with information and, to be honest, I WANT MORE OF THESE MC’S! I started after dinner and stayed up until about 12:30 am to finish the book because I could not put it down (except for snacks, of course).

-This is a great book, especially if you’re a paranormal/urban fantasy + romance lover like me!

-Calum Welsh. I would like to quote Holly from the TV show The Office (US version), “The man just exudes s3x”
I am currently forcing myself from gushing over this man as I want future readers to meet Calum with as fresh as eyes possible!

-Academia setting + an adventure

-The TENSION, the STATIC in the air, the PINING!

-Bow chicka wow wow

Things that I didn’t like:

-That it had to end, as I said, I WANT MORE :'(

-That this world is not real

I can’t wait for the continuation of this series! Congratulations Ferrell Dawson!

Once I picked this book up I couldn't put it back down. I loved the FMC from the beginning. I also elated to her and the mixed feelings she had about finally being able to pursue something for herself after looking after everyone else for so long. I loved the initial meeting between the FMC & MMC, I don't think there is a human on Earth that wouldn't immediately melt into a puddle at Professor Calum Welsh's feet, but Fern did her best to hold it together giving us just the right amount of sexual tension as they worked together through the book. I also really loved the Scottish lore woven in to this book, it was just the right amount of imagery and backstory for this kind of read. This book is very well balanced and delivers exactly what it is meant to. This is paranormal romance on the shorter side and the author was still able to deliver of just the right amount of world building, lore, steam and action! The vibe reminded me of A Discovery of Witches if you stripped away all of the boring parts and added in some damn good spice and angst. The version we all truly wanted. It's the perfect bit of escapism and I can't wait to see where the series goes from here!

I was so excited to start the new year, with a new author, and Ferrell Dawson not only met my expectations but smashed them to smithereens! I first saw the cover and that enticed me to look at what the story was about, then I read it was a Paranormal/Fantasy romance, in an academic setting, in Scotland, which obviously convinced me to request an ARC. And I absolutely, DEVOURED every single page.

This was a fast-paced story but even so, the characters had such depth that I fell in love with them all. Fern, Callum, and Emmett who I adore just all hit the spot for me.

I loved the Scottish mythology and I loved the author's take on Seelie vs Unseelie Fae. I loved how ...oh wait, I do not want to spoil it so shhhhh.

This is one of those books you simply won't want to put down. A bit of sexual content that may not be to everyone's style but for me, it was so fun that even those scenes that edged on the risque didn't even phase me. I was hanging on to every word. If you enjoy a fast-paced fantasy or paranormal romance, I HIGHLY suggest this wonderful book! I’m already looking forward to the next installment, and hope this series continues!

Thank you to Ferrell Dawson for the opportunity to read this ARC from Booksprout in exchange for my honest review.

The majority of this book was a pretty good read! Good, not great, but still enjoyable.

The main female character, Fern, was interesting and seemed realistic while the main male lead, Callum, had a good mix of charming prince and intelligent professor. The side characters, although not really fleshed out, were still good and created enough of an attachment to deserve their own books.

I had two main gripes. The sex scenes were excessively cringe-worthy and needed to be skimmed over. And then there was the whole " breaking-curse then attacked-by-ancient- enemies" ending. It was a very poor and oddly quick wrap up to a problem which was so serious throughout the entire book. That solution felt too flimsy and the conflict so out-of-place.

But, overall, it was a pretty enjoyable, fast read and did set up the next character's stories very nicely.

A great start to what is hopefully a great series! I really liked this take on traditional Celtic/Irish mythology - I was very into this as a teenager and it's fun to get back to that as an adult. The premise of these magical beings hiding in plain sight at a university makes sense for the plot, and Fern isn't kept in the dark too long (on most things). The action plot is well intertwined with the romance plot, and while we do spend most time with Fern there are some bits from Calum's POV, and even a few from Emmet, who's a secondary character in this book but I assume will be a hero later on.

Great description of the magic - how it affects everyone in the story and how Fern experiences it for the first time. Very excited to keep reading this series!

What a great debut book from an indie author! We dive right into the world of academia in Edinburgh, Scotland. I recently traveled there and so reading about all the different locations was so fun for me since I can’t wait to go back!

First up we meet Fern, a responsible older sibling that became guardian to her two younger siblings after losing their parents in a freak accident. She’s finally off to do something for herself for once after years of being the caregiver: studying for her doctorate in Edinburgh.

Little does she know she’s about to get pulled into a world of magic, curses, and Fae. Enter Calum, her new department head and advisor…. Or is that all he is??

I loved how the author weaves Fae lore seamlessly with other Scottish mythology and creatures to create a somewhat unique spin on the Fae / fated mate theme. We have a Fae Prince trying to save his people, a reluctant heroine, some truly delicious sexual tension (and eventual 🌶️🌶️), along with interesting side characters and the promise of more in the next book in the series coming out in March 2023.

Check out this great debut & get ready to be inspired to book a trip to Scotland!

DNF @ 20%

THE FAE'S GAMBLE started out pretty strong and I was getting into the story but then it all kind of fell apart. First off the POV would jump around with no clear breaks or indicators. A single paragraph would bounced back and forth between Fern and Calum and then sometimes even other side characters. Second, Fern's knowledge of magic was very inconsistent. She's in Scotland for her doctorate and it's clearly stated that she's studying magical societies and yet later in the book she's completely clueless about how magic works and is getting this whole explanation. Overall, there were too many issues for me to truly enjoy reading this.

- Quick and easy paranormal romance based in Scotland.
- If you enjoy fae x witch, fated mates and century long curses.
- I love that both Fern and Calum put their loved ones first and carry so much on their shoulders.
- Lovable side characters who will have their own books.

- The third person POV switching was clunky.
- Some info dumpy parts, but thankfully not too many.
- I wish the main characters were more active in the story line. The curse and the battle concluded without Fern and Calum doing anything purposeful.

Such a cute read full of magic and Scottish lore! The only thing that made me dock a star from the full five is that throughout, the POV changed seemingly mid page with no indication it should be switching - no little design between paragraphs, no double spacing, etc. I did have to re-read quite a few parts to make sure I knew who’s thoughts I was reading. Aside from that confusion, the story itself was lovely, combining two of my favorites - fae and Scotland! I’m excited for book two!

Can you wrap up a book any quicker? Sheesh.

The premise started off great, the background info was there, the character building started off solid and then... it devolved into a basic vanilla spicy book that, once the boring sex scenes were over, devolved into 'let's finish this book as soon as possible in the most convenient way.' Cue expeditious ending. Ugh.

Also, screw the Harry Potter references. It was published in 2023 - do better!

I was excited to read this book because I was into the premise of the story. Unfortunately it was disappointing. There was hardly any character development, limited plot development, and hardly any exposition. The story seemed rushed. The writing wasn't so great either. It was written too colloquially and felt like it was an unfinished unedited draft. Eloquent, this story is not. Two stars instead of one since I read to the end and didn't DNF.

I like the concept but the execution needed work. All the exposition was at the start so a third of the book passes before anything happens because it's all back story. As a result the rest of the book feels rushed and we don't really learn anything about the characters personalities. It wasn't bad but it wasn't particularly good either.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 !!

This book was delightful! I’ve never ever read a fae book less than a few hundred pages, so the pace felt a little too quick for me at times. It also took a hot minute to get used to the tense the author used.

But! I thoroughly enjoyed this and I look forward to more from this author!

It combines 3 things I love ... mythology, pop culture, and fated mates!

The romance aspect definitely makes the story more interesting but I would have still enjoyed it if it was simply an adventure story. Kudos, author! You did an excellent job. I look forward to the next books in the series.

I really liked the story, but the writing was clunky and amateurish. There was a lot of repeating the same phrases over and over. Also, there were quite a few scenes that felt rushed and Callum would have benefitted from significantly more character development. However, even with those flaws in the writing, I still really enjoyed the story and am happily continuing on with the series.

These characters are really fun and I liked that the author based this world around Scottish mythology, I just wish there was more! The whole plot felt a bit rushed, like the characters didn’t have time to let feelings develop and it made the ending feel a bit anticlimactic. Still a fun quick read, and would recommend if you’re a fan of Alessa Thorn type stories.

3.2☆ I had a great time reading this! Academic fall vibes in Scotland with Faerie magic? Absolutely!

I think it could have been even better with a bit more slow burn (despite the mate concept) and plot build-up.

It's intentionally a shorter read with a leaning on the romance plot. But the writing is pretty excellent for the length!!

This author has potential but this feels like a first novel. It’s repetitive and slow and the characters lack something. I just don’t feel connected to them. The MMC is too fussy in his appearance and too hot and cold. There’s an inconsistency in tone through out so far.
