The book starts with a military transport plane crashing onto a mountain that has only been successfully climbed once. Reconnaissance photos show evidence of survivors, which leads to a military operation to reach the summit and attempt to recover those survivors. The mountain climbing action was interesting for me, so I was surprised when, one third of the way into the story, all previously noted survivors and the rescue team are now pronounced dead. The action then turns to efforts of a clandestine army division to study the crash site after it is discovered that unintended cargo was aboard when the crash occurred, while an unexpected source brings unwanted attention. It did require a lot of willingness on my part to suspend belief in reality for the setting of the story, and the characters didn't become particularly well developed. While I had mostly determined the outcome well before the end, curiosity kept me going, hoping for one more surprise before the end. Entertaining while reading, but won't stick with me long. Definite brain candy.
