I found some really great poems or verses that I'll share below. I would have given this book a higher rating if not for the fact that I felt the composer tried to hold the hand of the reader too much. Poetry shouldn't be explained by anyone except the writer and it's designed for interpretation. While it was, at times, helpful, ultimately I felt like there was too much information given either in text at the beginning of a poem, or in the footnotes. I greatly appreciate that the footnotes were at the bottom of the page though, instead of in the back. Hate that!
"A Rule Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can." -JW
"The Inner Light He that has light within his own clear breast May sit i' the center, and enjoy bright day: But he that hides a dark soul and foul thoughts Benighted walk under the midday sun; Himself his own dungeon." -JM
"Winter Poem once a snowflake fell on my brow and I loved it so much and I kissed it and it was happy and called its cousins and brothers and a web of snow engulfed me then I reached to love them all and I squeezed them and they became a spring rain and I stood perfectly still and was a flower." -NG
I think this poem represents what it's like to have depression- "The Rainy Day The day is cold, and dark, and dreary; It rains, and the wind is never weary; The vine still clings to the moldering wall, But at every gust the dead leaves fall, And the day is dark and dreary.
My life is cold, and dark, and dreary; It rains, and the wind is never weary; My thoughts still cling to the moldering Past, But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast, And the days are dark and dreary.
Be still, sad heart! and cease repining; Behind the clouds is the sun still shining; Thy fate is the common fate of all, Into each life some rain must fall, Some days must be dark and dreary." -HWL
While a few of the poems collected in this book were a bit boring, I absolutely loved the variety held within the pages. I will read this book often throughout the years. No matter what I happen to be feeling or needing to express, there seems to be a poem here that can do it!
