The night that John Lennon was killed my landlord moved in with Yoko Ono and the mystery began for me. As time passed, the reasons for Lennon’s murder revealed themselves as the lives of the participants and their accessories played themselves out. I realized that Lennon’s advocacy of peace and on behalf of the underdog posed a political threat to the war makers. His large estate was another motive. Finally, jealousy played a role.
Lennon had come of age in the 1960s, a decade of inspiring music and liberating consciousness, as well as a time of political assassination and war. He persevered through a difficult childhood and created a music that resonated with his generation and beyond. He demonstrated how music can wield political power. After he attained spectacular success as the founder of the Beatles, he endured a crisis of confidence and reinvented himself as an artist. He was soaring towards another peak of popularity after he spent five years raising son Sean when he was assassinated. I decided to write a book about what I discovered.
