Ryder's a wolf. A wolf is to be loyal to the pack. Find a mate within the pack and always fight with them. However, Ryder is different, and it's all due to the night he heard Hadiza's voice. Hadiza wants nothing to do with the family tradition. She wanted to be a Siren but settling down and creating a family was something she didn't want. She didn't even want to mingle with the men in her Villa. She had no interest in dating. That was until she met Ryder.
Ryder was supposed to be her first kill after gaining her Siren abilities. However, she couldn't do it, and her Grann thinks it's due to her being attracted to Ryder the moment the two met. The thing is, Sirens and Wolves are sworn enemies, so Hadiza and Ryder's relationship is forbidden.
Can the two's relationship break the long war between the beefing species? Or will their packs finding out their secret affairs cause an all-out war that'll lead to more bloodshed?
First things first, that cover *chef kisses* It’s one of the most beau covers I’ve seen this year in books. Loved the premise l, which is what made me buy the book. Who doesn’t like an enemies to lovers troupe?
Other things I liked about the story was the use of the African goddess for the Siren background- brilliant and NOT something you see often in paranormal fiction. I loved the specific use of African names: Ackeem, Mama Abeni, Mami Water. These were fantastic details. The use of the Haitian Creole - really loved that. I thought that was superb. Made me want to learn. lol. Unfortunately, the execution, the sloppy character writing- nobody had any development and I didn’t learn a thing about any of them. Speaking of characters, let’s get into them.
Ryder is gross and very unappealing after those first scenes we got with him and Mia. Want to know what else is unappealing, the werewolf pack treating the women like LITERAL properties. Talk about disgusting. This is a take on mates that is my least favourite. You can essentially “earn” another male wolf’s mate if you beat him in a fight. But wait- there’s more. The female has zero say in the matter. Even if she is in love with the prior male. This is just an icky take on this part of the were lore and made my skin crawl. Especially during that entire interaction where Mia was CLEARLY an unwilling participant. Then calling the woman “another wolf’s leftovers.” And saying she wasn’t worth it because she didn’t want to sleep with him as she was in love with someone else?
Excuse me? Book was pretty misogynistic and filled with outdated cliches and views that belonged in a 90s romcom. It honestly just made me highly irritated and livid. Do better author.
All of these should have been a sign of what was to come in this book. Scratch that. The terrible editing, constant jumping and not being able to discern who was speaking at the VERY BEGINNING of the story, should have been a sign of what was to come from this book.
The entire story pissed me off because the cover is just bloody breathtaking! (I know! Don’t judge a book by its cover and what not) but this book was almost exceedingly bad. I hated both leads. I especially hated Ryder and could not and did not root for him.
Oh, I forgot to mention. The older brother abuses the Hidazi, both verbally AND physically and the family is aware. How do they handle this, you might ask? Simple. They tell the MC that she shouldn’t upset him and they constantly send him to fetch her KNOWING he doesn’t like her and abused her. Nobody stands up for her. Aren’t they the greatest?
The men in this book ALL need to learn CONSENT. NO, is a complete sentence and none of them heard the word or respected when it was uttered to them.
I have NO idea why ANYTHING happened in this book and honestly, I think the author doesn’t too. She doesn’t like or have feelings for the guy her abusive brother is forcing on her, yet despite her claim to Ryder, she’s taking a vested interest in picking out a sexy dress and new heels. Heels that she’s excited to wear… to go on a date with someone she doesn’t know, like or even want to be around.
Reading this book gave me an actual headache. I paused numerous times to just inhale and get through to the end. Words are not enough to express my explicit disdain for the incoherent thoughts that were penned for this book.
I got whiplash at every turn. One second she’s allowing Ryder to claim her, the next, she doesn’t know what being claimed means. Girl, what? And we never even got to why her clan hates his clan. Come to think of it, we never got to WHY to ANYTHING that happens in the story. Why is your brother an abusive A-hole? Why are you defending a boy you don’t know? Why is the formatting all over the place? Why is this book so terrible? I guess the world will never know?
Like I mentioned, the premise for the story, is good. I truly believe if the author went back to the drawing board and rewrite this story, it could be great. I would read a rewritten version with all the issues fixed. Until then, it’s 2 stars for me.
First things first the cover is beautiful which is what made me want to read the book. The book as a whole was not terrible but not what I expected. There was little to no world building, and the relationship between the characters seemed very rushed, as they never ever really got to know each other. The book itself left too many questions unanswered for example the book would say numerous times how the two were not allowed to be together because of the difference in species and that the species are at war but never explained why or show any conflict between the species. The book definitely leaves you wanting more. Not because of the way that it ended but just because there’s not enough information in the book to support the characters and their motivations and their species.
This book was a pretty okay read. Even with a to be continued ending, I felt the drama and controversy were lacking. I was waiting for the climax but to me it never got there. I also felt like we never truly saw them fall in love. I do feel like the storyline has great potential! I'd mostly like read the 2nd book to see where Zenithra takes the story.
I loved this story tremendously. I sincerely hope there's more to this story. Zenithra Black is a gifted and talented writer who I recommend to everyone. If you haven't experienced her writing I suggest you check her out.
Hadiza is a siren and Ryder a wolf shifter. They meet after Hadiza gets her siren powers but instead of luring and killing a human male Ryder responds to her call. Although she pulls him into the water, she is unable to kill him. So starts their relationship because now Ryder is unable to get her out of his mind.
The emotions are missing in this book. It also needs someone to go through and be that kid that asks "why" throughout the entire book and fill in from there. We don't know why sirens and wolves are enemies, what the stakes are for Hadiza and Ryder going against them, much of anything about pack life or siren life, the rituals of sirens, why Hadiza's brother Hakeem is so adamant that she go out with his friend or even provide a good enough explanation for why her brother seems to hate her so much. That she left the Villa seems so small a matter for the hate. I couldn't understand so many things about the story itself. Even the sex scenes are weird and perfunctory I thought. To add to my puzzlement, the paragraphs are oddly and confusingly spaced, so much so that my brain had to work extremely hard in order to figure out who was talking because the dialogue wasn't broken up in a meaningful way. Word choice and grammatical and spelling errors also do their part to detract from the story which if fully fleshed out and edited could've been good I think.
Beautiful cover...but it left so many questions. Just like another comment said, there was a lot of information that didn't make sense because there was no background/previous story provided. I also feel like some scenes were unnecessary or just provided details that we didn't need or were just their to move the plot along. I really tried to go with the flow because it's supposed to be fantasy and mating, etc. but the fact that they are both acted so nonchalant with the marking, randomly finding out where the other lives/works just was weird to me. Another thing was with the alpha always needing to see Ryder but we never learned for what, also so he is still a Gamma or the Beta?? I also don't get why her brother is so angry at her to the point of choking and harassing her and the family is just ok with it (besides the Granny)...
It was just a whole lot of confusion honestly but I see where it was going. Ultimately, I liked the thought and plot. I just think the execution needs a little bit more work/more depth to the characters (maybe more flashbacks of what lead to them leaving mixed in) and less extra details (ex. about coming home from work and dropping keys off and taking a shower etc.).
I think this is to be a slow burn because it wasn’t enough development between the two main lead characters. The relationship didn’t feel strong enough from them just run off together. And a female protagonist irritated me because she clearly saw that no one but her grandma gave a damn about her yet. She wanted to stay with them and I get it that’s where her family is and she had connections but she was very irritating. The male character I like to, but the way he was basically insulting that other wolf girl and annoyed me. Also he was irritating and I liked him better than a female protagonist. Honestly, I think their relationship was rushed and he needed more developments. Also the female protagonist brother I do not like him. I hate him and I want him dead just like his friend
It was alright. There were a lot of grammatical errors. I also didn’t like that the MFC kept trying to fit in with a family that so clearly didn’t like her or respect her. Speaking of which, that brother of hers needed a good old fashioned beat down. Both the main characters are going to need to wise up, they came across kind of dumb. 3/5
💯 love the plotline. Really felt for the MCs. The biggest con is that there are a lot of grammatical errors. It threw me off frequently. But overall the book is good and the ending was not expected. Love how strong the FMC is and her streak of independence is awesome.
This is a great love story. It reminds me of the song, If loving you is wrong I don't want to be right. Here we have two different species who are feeling each other. They are natural enemies, but they don't seem to care.
I had a difficult time getting through this book. The grammatical errors and paragraph breaks made it hard to follow. I don't think I will read the 2nd book when it releases. Hopefully it will be edited much better than this one.
I loved the book but it had too many mistakes, In different areas. Like the format, some sentences were written wrong, didn’t make sense. Other than that, I enjoyed the book that’s why I gave it a 3.
This book was good. *small spoiler* I'm glad to see he was a regular working guy. Its so refreshing to see in paranormal books. I can't wait for the next one.
I FEEL PLAAAAYYYEEEDDDDD !!! FYM THERE’S NO SEQUEL TO THIS?!?! That ending most definitely warrants one!! I was hunting down any kind of story about mermaids and/or sirens and found this and it was everything I was looking for…..minus some closure. Smh. What’s the saying? “Be careful what you wish for.”…..”If you look for something long enough, you’ll find it.”….Honestly though, this story was well written, the setting made sense for the character cast, and the drama was HEAVY! I just genuinely wish that there was a sequel because I NEED so many questions answered lol. Definitely would recommend to readers into emotional damage for sure!
