A morbid discovery and a missing daughter set an ex-cop and her PI partner on a desperate search for answers . . .
Billie Wilde left the police force to team up with PI Ellis Darque—but when a skeleton in a wedding dress is unearthed in Ellis’s new house, followed by another body in the garden, Billie begins to realise her new outsider status has its disadvantages.
But Ellis’s arrest is not the only thing to worry about. Aside from an emerging case of multiple deaths connected to each other only by tattoos on the corpses, Ellis’s daughter has failed to return from a volunteering stint at an orphanage. When Maya finally sends a video message—and uses a code phrase to communicate she is in danger—Ellis makes a desperate journey to Europe and beyond. But will the answers to the mystery lie much closer to home?
With Buried Dreams, the acclaimed author of the Billie Wilde thrillers begins a riveting new series of crime, corruption and two dedicated investigators in the gritty north of England.
Marrisse Whittaker has been creating characters for all of her working life, first as a TV and Film Make-Up Artist, where she might have been called upon to construct a corpse, age an actor by a hundred years, or make a real-life drug-raddled rock star look desirable.
Next as a TV Scriptwriter, creating stories for popular series such as CBBC’S Byker Grove, BBC’s Doctors and Channel 4 Hollyoaks.
But plenty of drama takes place in real-life too and when Marrisse joined forces with her husband, former TV Journalist Bob Whittaker, to establish Orion TV, they produced a fascinating range of factual programmes for major broadcasters.
Now creating a scene has taken on a new meaning for Marrisse since 2020, when she launched a new career as a novelist, writing crime fiction.
Living by the sea in rural Northumberland, Marrisse likes to invent murder and mayhem whilst travelling far and wide or walking through the surf and turf landscape on her doorstep, whilst eating lots of chocolate.
Buried Dreams is a fast paced and, at times, harrowing thriller. I had never read any of the Billie Wilde thrillers before this novel but that didn’t matter as this novel could easily be read as a stand alone. The characters are well written and I really enjoyed reading about Billie and Ellis and their PI business.
Buried Dreams had me gripped right from the start and I couldn’t stop reading as I just had to know what was going to happen next. I am definitely going to be reading more Billie Wilde novels.
I received an ARC of this novel. This review is my honest opinion and is written voluntarily.
I read this book mainly because my friend’s cat featured in it! I thought it was a very good plot with well developed characters and I really liked how they all wove together as the story progressed. It was difficult reading in places due to the subject matter of people trafficking- more so because this is reality for a lot of women. I would read more by this author
Billie Wilde has left her job in the police and joined forces with her former colleague and Private Investigator Ellis Darque, together they set out to investigate crimes and concerns on behalf of members of the public.
When the body of a local boy is found in a suspected suicide they are tasked with investigating the circumstances of the death and determining if it is indeed a suicide. Ellis, however, soon finds himself under investigation following the discovery of two bodies within his new home. Billie & Ellis are required to dig as deep as possible to uncover the circumstances that have lead to these deaths, all whilst in addition to the mysteries at home, Ellis's daughter Maya has not returned as expected, from Romania where she had been volunteering in an orphanage.
What follows is a multi layered investigation and exploration into serious organised crime, people trafficking and corruption, which find the pair following leads from within the community, as well as a discovery of who can they trust when it comes to unraveling the truth.
This book is brilliantly written (I could actually imagine this as a TV drama series). Bearing in mind there is a lot going on, I was gripped from start to finish. This is the fourth book in the Billie Wilde series but it can be read as a stand alone - there are a lot of characters that are introduced, and I do feel like if I had read the previous 3 books I would have found it easier to have a clear track of who is who & what the connections are, but that said, once I had a grasp on the names I was fine. I’d highly recommend this series, and I’ll definitely go back to the start and pick the other books up soon.
A great book to start the new year. I have been eagerly anticipating Marrisse Whittaker's latest book having read all three of the Billie Wilde series and thoroughly enjoying them. In the new book Billie has left her job as DSI heading up the Murder Enquiry Team and is now working as a partner in a Private Investigation Agency with former colleague Ellis Darque with whom she has a little bit of past which they are both trying to ignore in the cause of professionalism. I couldn't help feeling that both Billie and Ellis's investigative talents were going to waste chasing errant husbands and insurance fraudsters but it wasn't long before these two were in the centre of a much juicier case and one extremely close to home for one of them! When a body is found in the chimney of Ellis's new home, he himself comes under the suspicion of his old police force. As if that wasn't bad enough, when his daughter Maya doesn't return from Romania where she and fellow students have been helping at an orphanage he realises that she may be in danger. Buried Dreams is a really fast paced thriller and I loved that there were characters from the old series as well as new ones. The story line is quite harrowing as the author does not shy away from real life and in this case human trafficking is at the heart of the investigation. Alongside that, Billie has the chance of a romantic liaison but with her track record is James Checkley quite as good as he seems? To sum up, the first of the new series is just as good as the last and as I read it I kept thinking what a brilliant tv series it would make. The icing on the cake was having a character named after me. Congratulations to Marrisse on your latest book which definitely deserves 5 stars. Thanks to you and Bloodhound Books for an ARC of Buried Dreams.
This was a fantastic read and a great start to the new year. I read the previous Billie Wilde book by this author and loved it and this is another cracker. Billie is now a PI whose main job these days seem to involve surveilling cheating spouses and even finding out where an elderly woman's cat is disappearing to each night. However, when the skeletal remains of a woman are found in the chimney of Ellis' inherited house and the pokice seem determined to pin it on Ellis, Billie finds herself digging deeper. At the same time, Ellis' daughter Maya seems to be missing in Romania.
There are several threads here - missing people, dead bodies that the police don't seem keen to investigate and human trafficking. I was hooked from the start and read this in a day. The author does a great skilful job connecting all the threads together and there was a shocking twist towards the end, one I definitely didn't see coming. I'm looking forward to reading further in this series.
My thanks to Bloodhound Books for an advance copy of this, and this is my honest review.
Billie Wilde is trying to get used to her new job as a PI, after stepping down from her days in the MIT. Partnering up with Ellis, a former colleague, they work well together and life seems to be settling down. But when a skeleton is found in the chimney of Ellis’ new house and his daughter does not return from a charity volunteering trip abroad, there detective skills and contacts are soon needed to save lives.
This was the first Billy Wilde book I had read and although it is a part of a series, it stands alone too. I enjoyed the humorous comradery between the different characters and the way in which the author weaved elements of the characters’ lives into the plot. The story was well written and enjoyable to read. Although it seemed a little far-fetched at times, the author delivers a fantastic couple of twists at the end of the story, which I had no inkling of.
An enjoyable read for those who like police thrillers.
Thank you to Bloodhound Books for an ARC of this book, which I volunteered to read.
Having read and loved the Billy Wilde series of books I was looking forward to reading this spin off and I wasn’t disappointed. After leaving the police force Billy has joined Ellis Darque in a PI business and dealing with humdrum cases involving unfaithful spouses and wandering cats. There are a number of different threads to the story the main one is very dark and disturbing.
Briefly, Darque is renovating his new house when a skeleton is found in the chimney and the police have decided he is the chief suspect. Meanwhile, his daughter Maya has gone missing after volunteering at an orphanage in Romania.
With the simmering relationship between Billy and Darque seemingly a bit rocky Billy has a new love interest but is her heart ruling her head? This is a great read with some brilliant twists and turns and I was hooked from start to finish, that shocking finish. I’m hoping this is the start of another series.
This is the fourth in the Billie Wilde series but reads well as a standalone.
Wilde a former high ranking police officer in charge of the murder investigation team had left the force to join up with her former colleague Ellis Darque as Private Investigators. Wilde has previously been fiesty and determined to get the right results and leaving the police has not tempered that. Along with the mundane tasks of catching errant husbands, benefit fraudsters and wandering cats they also have a ·lot on their hands with Darque's daughter going missing whilst doing charity work in Romania and a body literally dropping in on them.
As their investigations progress the twists and turns increase as does the suspense.
This author is a wonderful storyteller and had a knack of drawing you into the book. A real page turner with each chapter leading you into the next with great anticipation.
Thank you to Bloodhound Books for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Billie Wilde returns in her new roll as a Private Investigator along with a skeleton corpse in her business partners chimney, a bit of human trafficking, some sex slavery, missing daughters and a disappearing cat!
However just like the previous 3 Billie Wilde books Marrisse (a very talented author!) throws a curve ball in there that I just didn’t see coming!
This gripping page turner means at the end of each chapter you just can’t wait to see what happens next and you’ll not be able to put it down (or even sleep!) until you’ve read the lot! This book, just like the other 3 books, should be made into a tv series as I would love to watch Marrisse’s amazing writing come to life on the big screen as the Billie Wilde series is definitely one that would be amazing to SEE! 10/10 yet again! Get it bought and read, you will not be disappointed
This books comes straight out the gate, with brilliant storytelling, and absolutely hooks you. The overall story is written so well, with the start throwing you straight in to the action and really opening up the mystery for you to start guessing. I loved the main character. They were brilliant, both clever and strong, but also not afraid to admit when they are struggling. I also liked how well the team ended up working together, when it really mattered. The author did well to keep the story and the detective details very up to date and realistic. I am always won over by this because it means I can feel like I am there and not need to pick apart issues. I really loved the unique story and just how well it flowed. Honestly, I can’t say just how much I liked this book. Definitely five stars from me and one to grab for yourself.
Having been fortunate enough to be chosen to review Buried Dreams from Bloodhound books before publication here is my honest review. So for me this was the first book by the author and it turns out this is the next from a series of books following the story of Billie and Ellis. The book kind of gives you some background so I figure ls they worked together in the past and Billie was ex Police for the murder investigation team. It’s clear something horrific happened to her which made her leave the police and since then she has started a PI firm with Ellis. I kind of which I had read the previous books but having finished and enjoyed this so kuch I will definitely be reading them and continuing them in the future and I can’t wait for the next instalment! This story centers around different jobs coming into the newly established business and the pair investigating them alongside the story of Ellis’s 18 year old daughter Maya whom he seemingly has only recently been in the know about. The book involves people trafficking, sex slave industry and murder, new and historic. The story evolves and comes together with many twists along the way making an enjoyable read which I really enjoyed. Not wanting to give too much away I would say give it a try but start at book 1 if you aren’t a follower.
This is the fourth book in the Billie Wilde series and the first one that I read, it can be read as I stand alone but personally, I am going to go and purchase the first three as I really enjoyed this book. This was definitely a page turner so I am glad I started it at the weekend, so work didn’t interfere with my reading. Billie has left her job and joined her former colleague Ellis as a Partner in a private investigation agency. A body is found in Ellis new home, that has been there for a while even with this the police want to pin this on Ellis. Also, Ellis’s daughter seems to have gone missing whilst volunteering in Europe. The book is brilliantly written which leaves you wanting more, I would highly recommend this book.
I have read all the other Billie Wilde books, and book 4, certainly doesn't disappoint, it's a totally fantastic read. From the very start I was captured into a gripping, page turner of a well written storyline line and plot. With very strong characters and wonderful descriptive. You are drawn into a story of shocking revelations, twists and turns that keep you engrossed and guessing which leads to a final shock of a conclusion. Be prepared once you start reading this, you won't want to put it down till the finish. I am, so ,so looking forward to the next one. My thanks to Bloodhound books for the copy this is my honest unbiased review.
I enjoyed reading this suspenseful mystery. This is still a newer author for me which I enjoy her ability to pull me into her stories with ease. I enjoy how she uses details to make her stories come to life. This book is no different. It is a story that is full of action, suspense, and twists and turns that leave you sitting on the edge of your seat. This is a well written story where the characters pull you into their world from the start. A story of a missing daughter and a search for answers that could mean survival. This is a fast paced, hard to put down, engaging story. I really enjoyed this book. I highly recommend this book.
This is the fourth book in the Billie Wilde thrillers but my first and after reading this one I'll be looking to read others. After only doing small jobs, Ellis and Billie's PI agency take on a bigger job, a 19 year old case that was ruled a suicide but the parents believe that it was murder. During this time Eillis's daughter goes missing, where is she? Ellis also inherited a house and during renovating one of the rooms a body is found in the chimney wall as well as one in the back garden. Does Ellis know about these bodies or is it a shock to him as well as everyone else. There are a plenty of twist in the story which has you guessing.
Marrisse Whittaker is a new writer to me and I am very grateful to Bloodhound Books for giving me the chance to read Buried Dreams. I had not read the previous Billie Wilde books but it doesn't matter as this is a new strand from the author. Wilde has left the police and has joined PI Ellis Darque in a detection agency; they have a coterie of friends and direct contact with the police. When corpses are found in Darque's new home, there is a story to follow. When the daughter of Ellis disappears he becomes embroiled in a desperate race to find her. Well written and with fascinating characters, this is the beginning of what promises to be a great series.
Marrisse Whittaker is a new writer to me and I appreciate the opportunity from Bloodhound Books for giving me the chance to read Buried Dreams. I had not read the previous Billie Wilde book, though this appears not to matter. The book keeps you interested as has several stories occurring throughout though nicely pulls them altogether by the end. There's a twist that you definitely don't expect. This book managed to hold my interest and I struggled to put it down. I really enjoyed this book and now interested in reading more of this author and her stories
I loved this book from the first page. I didn't know that this book was the latest in a series, but that didn't stop me from reading this as a standalone. I will be buying the previous books to catch up. A fantastically written and researched book that holds the reader to the end. There was no sign of a rushed finish with a drop in the standard of writing. It is an excellent book that I would thoroughly encourage any crime genre reader to buy. Thank you to Bloodhound books for the opportunity of an advance copy. I loved this book, and this is my honest review.
Hopefully the start of a new series involving Billie Wilde, who has now left the police to become a P.I.in partnership with Ellis Darque - a great surname for the book which is at times very dark!. Great plot with plenty to keep the readers intrigued and with characters which you will love and hate in equal measures. Good pace and certainly gives you food for thought too. If you haven't read the previous three stories, I would strongly advise that you do although this one reads well as a standalone too. Certainly recommend it.
Thanks to lovebookstours bloodhound.books and marrissewhittakerauthor for including me on their book tour for Buried Dreams.
📚 My Thoughts-
This is the fourth book in the Billie Wilde series, although my first read of the author and this can definitely be read as a stand alone.
This is an absolute page turner and I was gripped from the very first page. Strongly written Characters with massive depth that drawn you into their world. This is a gritty, fast paced, exciting story with multiple layers and storylines including corruption, people trafficking and organised crime that will make it difficult to put this book down. The author keeps you hooked to the very end with plenty of twists and turns.
A great story from a wonderful writer and storyteller, I will definitely be going back to book one to begin the Billie Wilde story.
Gripping and gritty from the very first page!!! The author's excellent description of characters draws us into their story and gets us to engage with them. Her use of dialogue and expert nuance of meaning develops both humour and pathos in dark moments. The plot – as we have come to expect, is current and pulls no punches, but it develops apace – and we are swept up in suppositions and guesses… yet I still missed the clues.!! Will YOU?
This is a highly entertaining novel set mainly in the UK but also in Eastern Europe. The characters are excellent and have depth, they feel real. The story it's self is gritty and quite informative. There has been a lot of research gone into this. It gives a realism to the story. Parts of it are dark and bleak but it it doesn't dwell on horror. The only thing stopped it being 5 stars were the coincidences. Highly recommended.
This is the fourth book in the series but it can easily be read as a standalone. A skeleton found in an old house sets off a whole chain of events, and pulls the main characters into a web of people trafficking, involving one of their own. I found the premise interesting, and there were lots of separate storylines which all tied up together at the end. I wasn’t a fan of some of the language used, such as ‘fuzz’ for police. However, it’s a solid novel which will appeal to many readers.
This is the fourth book in the Billy Wilde series. It is a fast paced thriller that grabs you from page one and doesn't let go until the end. Gritty strong characters pave the way for a plot that will take your breath away and have tears coming to your eyes as it involves human trafficking. I can't wait for the next book by this author. I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy of this book.
I just finished all the current books in the Billie Wilde series. Each book really did get better. Buried Dreams surprised and pleased me. I wasn't sure the author could pull it off making her a private investigator but she absolutely did! Really liked the ending too because I hate to see the character get caught up in another personal drama. So now I am hooked on the series and look forward to seeing what is in the works for the next book.
All aboard the Marrisse Whittaker rollercoaster for the 4th instalment of Billie Wilde. How the author keeps up the intense fast pace in these books I’ll never know but it’s terrific! Excellent if somewhat harrowing storyline that just keeps giving. Not sure how I feel about this series moving from police procedural to PI genre as this one just lost its edge a tiny bit but hey ho it was still a highly enjoyable read. Hoping we haven’t yet seen the last of the wonderful Billie
Another well written 5 star storyline the grabs your attention and intrigue from start to end. A great read from the author, it’s always good to catch up with familiar characters and this doesn’t disappoint. Billie Wilde and Ellis Darque are doing what they do best. I won’t write about the storyline as I feel this is the job of the blurb, but I will say an enjoyable read.
Buried dreams by Marrissa Whittaker. Billie Wilde left the police force to team up with PI Ellis Darque—but when a skeleton in a wedding dress is unearthed in Ellis’s new house, followed by another body in the garden, Billie begins to realise her new outsider status has its disadvantages. Really enjoyable read. Twisty. 5*.
I loved this fast paced book and it had me hooked from the start. I loved how the different threads of stories were connected, and the ending didn’t feel rushed.
I didn’t realise this was the latest in a series so can definitely be read as a stand-alone, I’ll definitely be buying the other books too.
I really enjoyed this book. The writing hooked me right from the start and engaged me all the way through, the storyline was compelling and the characters were well developed. I was utterly gripped, it is fast paced, tense and full of twists and kept me guessing. I couldn't put this book down and I can't wait to see what else the author does.
