They couldn’t be more opposite of each other, the captain of the football team and the biggest nerd in school. It's almost cliché. Yet somehow they work well together. As Micah and Lukas explore a relationship that’s almost too good to be true, they have more than just their self-doubts to overcome. Will their love be enough to survive societal and family pressures along with the looming threat of splitting up to go to college? Or will it all be too much, popping the bubble they’ve created together?
Spark is an MM prequel novella that can be read either before or after The Progeny Duet, and does not contain any spoilers for the main story. This is a steamy romance story that includes mention of homophobia and death of family members.
Soooo I picked this up thinking it was related to the book “Head In The Game” that I just read by this author since there were men named ‘Luke’ in each one BUT um 😂 They have nothing to do with each other at all and now I’m falling down the rabbit hole because this is the prequel to a MMFMMM sci-fi romance and the author says this couple’s story will continue there. This story was so innocent and lovely because it’s best friends to lovers but then life happens and going into this duet they are going to be reunited for the first time in years. And because I loved them so so much I am now currently reading this random duet when RH has never been my jam. The duet started with a prologue from the chick’s POV who has amnesia and then right into Micah & Lukas’ tortured relationship and when 4 other men randomly showed up, I realized I had seen them all in this prequel but thought they weren’t important. The weird thing is that this book isn’t sci-fi at all or anything remotely close to it but finding out this duet becomes sci-fi? I’m totally confused but so invested in this crazy ride I’m about to embark on. I don’t know how it’s going to work because Lukas and Micah are gay, not bi but the way the reviews and blurbs read seem to hint at them having their own thing even though they are technically drawn to this chick. No idea what’s going on but fingers crossed 🤞🏻 it doesn’t suck!
I can't rate this more than 3.5⭐, because this novella is just an intro into the full story of Micah and Lukas. Not only that, I'm mad about the ending. I feel duped. I hate it when things are left unfinished and that always happens to the best couples out there. The best couples most of the time have only short novellas and that's that.
This was an unexpected-friends-to-lovers done so, so right though. This novella was really good.
🔵 Best friends to lovers 🟣 Gay-awakening 🟢 Closeted, hiding 🟡 A break up, no resolve in this book ❗ Homophobia 🌶️ Spice is great; t/b
The story is about Micah and Lukas, two high school kids who become friends when they're seated together in the same class. They become best friends. And at the end of high school they become lovers.
Micah is a high school basketball star and comes from a very wealthy, uptight family. He has a questionable upbringing and he has a gay-awakening in this novella.
Lukas is a complete nerd, a gay guy who comes from a close family that loves him and are very much supportive of Lukas and Micah ending up together.
Micah and Lukas are amazing together, their connection is palpable, the gay-awakening done really well and the smut was fantastic. I became instantly invested in their story.
Micah is not out and is very careful about anyone finding out about him and Lukas, so when his parents finally do, he breaks things off with Lukas, but it seems they meet up a couple of years later and that's what we should read about in the Progeny duet.
No. I'm not reading the m/f duet where Micah and Lukas are not the main characters to get the rest of their story. I'm not.
Oh my goodness, if you've read Progeny, then Micah and Lukas' prequel is definitely a must-read. It was so sweet seeing Lukas with his parents. I had forgotten about a situation, and my heart broke for him. Getting to see Lukas and Micah grow their friendship and fall for one another was very sweet as well. This story really cemented my dislike for Micah's parents. It's so tragic that there are parents out there like them. Anyway, having read the Duet and knowing the situation made this prequel so much better. Definitely a must-read!!!
Rebecca Rathe does it once again! Delving in deeper to the beauty that is the characters in the Progeny Duoligy. I say characters, but they have become so vivid for me that I feel like they're friends I haven't met yet. I want to know how they're doing and where life is taking them. Getting to see the where the beautiful relationship that is Micah and Lukas started was amazing. I'm fully vested into any journey that these characters take in the future!
I loved this Progeny spin-off novella and devoured it in one sitting. In dual 1st person POV, we get to see Micah and Lukas fall in love with each misstep and longing glance. We experience all their firsts (and seconds… and thirds… it gets incredibly steamy). And then we get front-row seats to the heartbreak we know is coming—the emotional dive from the ultimate high of their being madly in love to the fallout from Micah’s betrayal.
Reading Spark made me want to go back and re-read the entire duet again.
This Micah and Lukas prequel is SO beautifully written and such an engaging addition to the Progeny duet. I absolutely adore the way their story came together and seeing this aspect of their beginning makes the events in the Progeny duet that much richer. It's not a full of spice fest, it's a thoughtful, organic origin story with tension and yes, spice, but it's done so wonderfully. This might be my favorite prequel ever! AND we get a sneak peek at Luis- Monster 🐔-Posa!
So beautiful. Micah and Lukas are utterly captivating together in this emotional story that is touching and heartbreaking as we see how their relationship developed. I'm going back to read the Progeny Duet now.
If you haven't yet read Rebecca's Progeny Duet, I can't think of a better place to start. If you have read Progeny, you're gonna fall in love all over again!
As a fan of the Progeny Duet, it was so amazing to get to see further back to the origins of Micah & Lukas's love story. I would seriously read this novella everyday if I wasn't committed to making progress with my tbr.
Hot damn 🥵 I love these two 😍
🏳️🌈 Prequel Novella to the Progeny Duet 🏳️🌈 MM Romance 🏳️🌈 All the feels 🏳️🌈 Love is Love
Micah and Lukas have long been an opposites attract favorite of mine. Who can deny the power of a properly worn sweater vest on a quiet Dom? Not this girl. Lukas loves with his whole heart, unashamedly. Micah struggles with what his love could mean for himself and the pair.
If you have read The Progeny Duet, you know their end game story. This was a wonderful addition for a true fan and a delightful read for a new comer to the series.
This is a NO! Although I really liked the MCs it was not enough to like the book. If there is one thing I'm so sick of is the Elites and their homophobic views and how others will perceive them if the child is gay. Hated Micah's parents. What pissed me off also was how Micah did not stand up and fight for himself and Lukas. I loved Lukas and how my heart hurt for his loss. lets not talk about the ending because it sucked!!!
Well, I feel very let down, after really enjoying this wonderful but oh so angsty tale we get an unfinished ending, soooo frustrating!! It says that Micah and Lukas's story continues in another book, but when I looked it up its about a girl with amnesia and its marked as mmfmmm, not interested.
I'm not sure how I feel about this book...... I read Head In The Game by Rathe and absolutely loved it (5 stars!). So I decided to jump into this book next. It ends in a major cliff hanger - kind of wish I knew that before I started. First of all this book has a lot of angst - and homophobia. It also says at the end of the book that the relationship of Luka and Micah continue in Progeny but after reading the description of that book, I'm not sure how they will fit into it (reverse harem romance MMFMMM, so if they are two of the MM with a F I'm not sure I want to read it (not my usual read for sure). I may download it and take a look and if I do read it all, I'll come back and adjust this review.
Update: I'm reading Progeny ;) 1/4 of the way in....will post update
A surprisingly good prequel novella. I didn't even actually know it was a short prequel to a duology because I got this from September 2023's Stuff Your Kindle Day and just randomly picked it up without looking it up on Goodreads. All I knew was that it was a novella & MM.
The novella turned out to be really good. I liked Lukas and Micah. I had the giggles with how their relationship developed and their chemistry, and despite how fast-paced and the constant time skips this book had, I was really invested in it.
Plot: 👌👌👌 Characters: 👌👌👌👌 Spice: 🌶️
POV: Dual 👬 OW/OM Drama: A little, but it's superficial. HEA: NO Tropes: Smart jock x nerd.
Damn. I'm totally speechless. I don't know what to say. Rebecca is a true writing genius that just pulls at your heartstrings and never lets go😮💨❤️ it only took me like 2 and a half hours to read this, I meannn it's really short but packs a punch❤️ Highly, highly recommend any of her books❤️ phewwww, Becca. I love you ❤️
This novella outlines how Micah and Lukas got to know each other in high school. The overachiever athlete and the nerdy guy in all the advanced classes. Their friendship grows and eventually becomes more. But Micah’s parents force him down a path of their design, and it doesn’t include being friends with Lukas.
I had just finished reading Progeny, and it was too late to start Retribution when I saw this. It's absolutely perfect. I love Micah and Lucas's story. It's sweet and sad and I just adore both of them.
The progeny duet has been one of my favourite RH since its release and reliving this little part of these 2 is amazing. I love their relationship and support and how damn hot they are together I think a re read of the duet is needed!
I loved getting to see how Micah’s and Lukas’s story began. It was sweet and awkward, but oh so hot. My heart broke alongside theirs, but knowing that they got their HEA made it so much easier to read. A great, quick read.
This short book was sooo good! I love knowing their back story now! It was kinda slow to get to the good spice but I’m definitely here for it! Their scenes together are sooo hot!!!
I didn't like it. Because I don't read gay romance books. Just not my genre to read. I was expecting more footage between them, but I couldn't find any.
Me encantó hasta que llegó el final! Lo malo es que es un MM sin siquiera un HFN, sino que continúa en otra historia que es MMFMMM y ya no me dan ganas de leer que tanta gente se meta en esta relación.
Lean los trigger warnings!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💔💔💔💔💔 😭😭😭😭😭
