Because I read the e-copy before my ARC came, I didn't realize this was a chonker that clocked in at 472 pages. All I know is that I was invested and read this book in just a few sittings.
The saying goes, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned," but an equally correct phrasing is, "Hell hath no fury like a teenage girl." Pretty, popular high school student Whitney Dean is brutally stabbed to death, and despite her being universally loved, there is no shortage of suspects: her former best friend that she had a public falling-out with, her current best friend who perhaps doesn't want to live in Whitney's shadow, and the new male English teacher who was been known to get too close to female students at his former school.
The dialogue, motives, and what drove the teenage characters were so expertly done. It's hard to accurately capture the essence of a teenage girl, but the author did it with ease. I scrutinized each suspect, and to my frustration, each had a legitimate reason to want Whitney dead...but then one started to emerge who had the most twisted motive of all, and when disturbing details of a past crime eerily similar to the present one emerges, the tension escalated until it was almost unbearable! The author's notes mention her inspiration for this book was the real life murder of Kirsten Costas by her classmate Bernadette Protti in 1984, which was dubbed "The Cheerleader Murder." What a rabbit hole that was!
Thank you so much to Kate Rock Book Tours and to the author for both an e-copy and a physical ARC. AND WHEN I DIE is available now.
