I read Precious Jade by Fyn Alexander several days ago. Normally I write my reviews pretty quickly after I’ve read the book I’m to review. After I read Precious Jade, I admit I was conflicted about how I felt about the book, and how I’m going to rate it. Now as I write this review, I’m still slightly conflicted on how I’m going to review and rate it.

Precious Jade is a BDSM themed homoerotic romance set in England in 1885. Jade Swift is an eighteen year old man who has lived a very sheltered and somewhat spoiled life. His mother is a popular actress, and when Jade was a child and up until his voice changed, was a popular singer himself. His mother insists at eighteen that Jade must find a real job. Jade is able to read and write very well, so he is hired to be a secretary and soon finds himself living in the countryside and in a simpler world that Jade has never experienced before. Because of the more tolerant lifestyle he’s lived behind the curtain, Jade is totally unprepared for the real world.

When Jade meets the master of the estate, Marcus Wynterborne, he’s immediately infatuated with him. Marcus is all business and somewhat a cold fish, and he’s nothing like Jade has ever met before. As Marcus’ secretary, he soon finds himself wanting to please his new Master Marcus, and is very disheartened when Marcus is displeased with him in any way.

Soon, a D/s relationship starts to develop between Marcus and Jade. Jade is strictly a novice when it comes to this lifestyle. As Jade learns more about what kind of submissive and what Marcus expects of him, Jade realizes that submitting to Marcus is a very natural thing and although he’s often confused by what is expected of him, he embraces the lifestyle and quickly falls in love with Marcus.

When Marcus finds Jade in what looks like a compromising position, he kicks Jade out. Jade must somehow find a way to survive alone and somehow fight his way back into his Master’s life and be his ‘boy’ once more.

Precious Jade is written in first person. I’m personally not a fan of first person romance. I like to know what both my heroes are thinking, and I usually feel cheated when I’m just reading romance by a single point of view. Surprisingly, I didn’t mind the first person aspect of the book that much because I really liked Jade. I enjoyed watching him grow from a spoiled, sheltered man to a man who became more self assured (still spoiled) at the end of the book.

Jade’s story disturbed me at times. Jade is abused and used by many characters in this book. When Jade sells his body in the second half of the book, this bothered me a great deal. I was saddened by the lack of freedom Jade really has in his life, and the hard choices that he had to make. Once again, I normally do not like this type of storyline at all, but I guess because I was able to experience it all through Jade’s perspective, I enjoyed it and even understood it better than if the book was written in third person.

I did not think the BDSM scenes were that sexy, but I did think they were interesting. I liked the chemistry between Master Marcus and Jade. I understood why each man became enamored with each other and I enjoyed watching them become more attracted to one another as their relationship continued to develop.

Because of the violence that Jade endures I normally would rate this book lower than I have. But, I do think it was essential to the plot, so I’ve decided to rate it higher because I do think that this book was interesting and I loved Jade.

A word of warning to some readers: Jade is physically, emotionally and sexually abused. He’s used and treated very badly throughout this book. Because of this, Precious Jade will not be for everyone.

I'm joining the bandwagon here. I am not sure about this book. I didn't dislike it but there were some things about it that disturbed me.
I liked Jade. He was a brat but loveable because of his innocence when it comes to how he views the world. He thinks everyone should love him and think he's adorable. Isn't that kind of what young people think? I think I did at one time, once upon a time ago.
Marcus didn't impress me very much. I never thought he felt love for Jade. I didn't care of the BDSM part of the story much either. It was colder than I thought it would be.
I think I'll try this book again someday. Maybe my thoughts will change and I'll like Marcus more.
I agree that this book isn't for everyone. I have certain friends that I believe this book will bother so they don't need to read it. Jade is abused by others and it will disturb them so they need to stay away.

I wasn't sure where to go on my rating with this one and I do like the whole BDSM and D/s but this story left me conflicted. Jade is so eager to please and wanting to be mastered by the one man he falls in love with but he belittles constantly his self worth, he's strong willed in some cases and determined I'll give him that yet temperamental and will weep at the drop of a hat. His 'Master' I wasn't impressed with because he in my opinion contributed to much of Jade's characteristics. I could say I felt sorry for Jade.

This book has multiple players rather than a strict one on one between Master and Slave, yet the Master could play and the slave could not. I contemplated whether I could handle going on with the story, but yet it also intrigued me to a certain degree and the era it was portrayed in made way to explaining a lot to the characters actions, discretions and mannerisms.

In the whole larger scheme of this story it's very well written. I have to say I was rather impressed with the ending after taking into consideration the contents not knowing what to expect in which sway this story would end.

4,5 stars. So debauched. I enjoyed myself immensely. Jade is a twink, an airhead and a drama queen, which he acknowledges himself, but the deep love for his master redeems him. Master Marcus is portrayed as the uber-master and not that much fleshed out, but in the end i couldn't lower my rating because i devoured the book. Lots of BDSM, lots of sex scenes that often were just a paragraph long, which i rather liked, lots of cuddling and a bit of humor. The heroes are white and the villains are black, and we get our HEA. The only thing that put me off is Jade calling his Master "Daddy" at the end of the book, it came out of nowhere and was introduced so late it seemed superfluous.
The rest - Escapism at its best.

Very good kinky historical m/m romance about Jade, raised in the theater, who gets a job as a secretary to an MP and has the chance to explore his submissive side.

A lovely story! The relationship between Jade and his master is both exciting and deeply romantic--a great read!

I like reading BDSM stories quite a lot and I had high hopes for this one, but I found it to be dissapointing. I'm surprised I managed to finish it. At more than one point it totally annoyed me and I think I just kept reading to see if they'll suddenly realize how much they're messing things up.
With the exception of a couple of moments I intensely disliked Jade and his Master often seemed like a self-important jerk. Jade was a complete novice in BDSM, but his Master didn't see fit to explain things to him before making him sign a contract. If it weren't for a couple of other helpfull individuals (such as his fellow submissive, Tom) Jade might have never really figured out what exactly was required of him. They also didn't have a safe word or anything resembling such a concept. At one point Jade is asked if he's ready for a whip and he answers that he's wants to please his Master but he is very scared of it. After a couple of words the Master ties him up and Jade reflects that he doesn't really have a choice. If the Master wants this, then he just has to take it. This scene shows clearly what I think is wrong with the book. Jade says he wants to submit, but he is just a slutty, spoiled boy (only 18) and has no clue what it really implies and his Master takes advatage of that with no remorse. I dislike this type of D/S relationship and I really don't believe either of the characters is truly in love with the other.
The sex scenes didn't even seemed sexy to me (not to mention the horrible "customers" Jade entertained at one point which weren't anything but pathetic and disgusting - I might have had more respect for Jade if he didn't willingly sell himself to those idiots, though I understand the necessity of that as a plot device).
I'd give it 1, but I actually finished it, so it must be at least 1.5, therefore I'll say 2 stars because I'm feeling kind.

4.5 stars ~ When it comes to books in the BDSM genre, I’m pretty much a neophyte and I’m very picky. I need, first and foremost, romance; but I’m also somewhat squeamish: cruelty, physical or mental, causes a negative reaction in me that I cannot just shake off. But I really liked Fyn Alexander’s Precious Jade.
I personally don’t get the lifestyle at all, but Fyn Alexander did such a wonderful job in the descriptions of the characters and situations that I could, through their eyes and minds, understand the need and satisfaction that they experienced. It actually worked for me within the context presented; for a first book Fyn Alexander has written a strong and very coherent story that took me along and I left their world feeling very good.
There is another story running along that of Jade and his Master as they find their way through the relationship; this is also an emotional minefield but done with a sense of justice and a rather wry sense of humour... I loved it!
I’m certainly very interested in anything else this fine author comes out with and I only hope that we don’t have to wait too long.

This is hard, because I love Fyn Alexander's books, but this is totally not zir best work (I think zir first effort maybe?).

The writing is OK. The characters are good. The set up for the relationship between Marcus and Jade is good. What I didn't like about it is that Marcus and Jade's relationship ends up being so minimal. Just as they're getting into it .

Also there were too many secondary characters; some served little function. The whole book needed to be tightened up.

It seems pretty clear to me that after this book Alexander completely ramped up the quality of story structure. I don't know if that's because of a good editor, or paying attention to constructive feedback, but I just want to say "Thanks" for whatever caused it, because without this not-so-good book I would never have the more recent Fyn Alexander books to read and love.

So, no rating from me: it would have been a 1.5 star but I just can't bring myself to harshly rate what was a promising early effort, two years after it was published.

What--

What did I just read?

Wow, I've read a lot of fucked up bdsm and incest and twincest and what not, but this really did leave me speechless. This was a pretty generic historical bdsm story right up until 50%, up til the Great Misunderstanding that is, where it just devolved into a storm of WTFs.

Because after being falsely accused of being a whore, the natural reaction of any one sane person is to proceed to BE a whore and then use his whorey superpowers to save the day, thereby earning him forgiveness.

I repeat, WTF?

The beginning was pretty good. The last quarter got very odd very fast. The mc narrated as if to normalize odd things and interactions. I'm not necessarily talking about the kinks- but rather the interpersonal relationships and interactions. It lost me a bit there.

Technically this is a 3.5, and the only reason I downgraded it to a half and not a full 4 stars is because the editor dropped the ball in some places. There were a few places were grammatical/spelling errors distracted you and pulled you from the story. Otherwise Precious Jade was a wonderful story. Jade Swift is an endearing character who I quickly became emotionally attached to. While some people don't particularly like a spoiled character, I find in the right story they definitely have a place. This was one of them. Jade is a spoiled young man who wants nothing more than to be loved. When he begins to work with Marcus Wynterbourne (Master Marcus) he thinks he has his chance. But he finds out that a loving relationship is not what Master Marcus has in mind. Instead Jade is introduced to a world of BDSM and willingly enters a relationship with Master Marcus as a slave. Jades natural flirty personality and dramatics wind up getting him in trouble and out-casted from both Master Marcus's care and home. The only way for Jade to get back the affections of Master Marcus is to grow up and redeem himself.

The story, while has wonderful BDSM parts and a nicely budding relationship between Master Marcus and Jade, it is more about the development of Jade and how he grows up. It has a wonderful cast of side characters that you become attached to. Simon and Tom I was particularly fond of and would love to see them with their own stories.

Marcus Wynterbourne comes off a bit cold and at first it's hard to see a connection between Jade and him. While this is because of Master Marcus being scorned from a previous love, there are moments where he comes off a little too cold. It was also interesting to see a story set during the Victorian era. It would have been nice to have seen the setting played into the plot a bit more, it didn't take away from the story all together. Precious Jade is a wonderful read and I definitely hope to see more from Fyn Alexander.

I am giving this book another chance. I am liking it better with this reread. Although this time around I don't like Jade, he is just a child, he does not deserve Mr. Wynterbourne. And I am appreciating the style of writing, like Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights.

I don't know if I can finish this book - not sensual enough, maybe? or not romantic enough? I like the protagonist, Jade, enough, and the whole Regency era milieu, D/s, Mr. Wynterbourne-is-really-Mr. Rochester, but somehow the whole thing is not compelling.

It's a relief to know that Precious Jade is F.A.'s first published book as it doesn't offer the emotional connection that later books have taught me to expect. Jade is a charming brat and his master is sexy and intense but I didn't really feel the love between them and the sex scenes seemed rather profunctionary. In fact the scenes involving minor character Osbert were, by far, the most intense moments in the book.
Still, it was a well written, entertaining story. Still better than many of it's genre.

I loved the book. The plot is delicious, with subtle hints of BDSM. Jade is a very naive child in many ways worse when he has to play all for the love of your life and put on show their intelligence and abilities. When he think that all is lost for him and his master, Jade received the best gift of all: the love he has always wanted.
Romantic and tender, hard on certain occasions, Fyn once again shows she knows how to write a great story.
