His second fortune, an immense gold strike , comes with a monstrous blight attached , one which he accidentally unleashes onto a small mountain town nestled in the heart of a remote Western-Canadian valley. Thomas Sinclair, a wealthy local business tycoon, wants Caleb's second fortune for himself and will stop at nothing to get it.
Now, Caleb must make a stand and fight not only for his friends and fortune, but also his future, knowing if he doesn't, he will surely die, and if he does, he will likely die trying.

This prequel to Katie Berry's award-winning novel, A Canadian Thriller, spans three volumes, expanding upon and enriching the adventures of Caleb Cantrill and Kitty Welch at every turn, taking them both to places they never expected they would ever be.
[Please be advised that this series contains cliffhangers and the story continues from one volume to the next, much like a mini-series on TV where you don't receive all the answers in the very first episode.]
Born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Katie moved west to British Columbia during a family migration that occurred during the later-half of the 20th century.
A longtime writer and voracious reader, Katie enjoys a variety of creative and recreational activities when she's not absorbed in the written word.
With many years of keyboard experience, Katie is an avid digital musician, involved in many musical theatre and stage productions in the beautiful West Kootenay region of BC over the past several years.
An eye for detail helps Katie capture many magical moments with her camera as she interprets the natural beauty of the world that surrounds her through its lens.
Always looking for something new to advance her artistic experimentation, Katie is an accomplished sketch artist. She specialises in detailed drawings of friends, family and clients, including fur-babies, such as cats, dogs and the odd ferret.
After a lifetime of experience in numerous fields of endeavour, Katie now spends her days, and most nights, doing what she loves, bringing stories alive for people who enjoy a tale where the everyday suddenly becomes something much, much more...
I’m a big fan of the original Claw, and have read the Lively Deadmarsh books set in the same universe, so this book is a lot of fun. Lots of familiar names and creatures. It’s cool seeing the huge spiders get some more attention, and the other creatures were brutally entertaining. Caleb and Kitty, who were featured in novellas bearing their names, are the main characters here, and I love them both. The supporting cast is full of colorful characters, and the setting of the future town of Lawless doesn’t disappoint.
The basis of the story starts pretty good. A robbery has taken place and Caleb has taken more than his share. Racing from the others, he disappears into Canada. After this exciting part, the story becomes a little too impossible for the reader to believe. This part of the trilogy ends very abruptly. I will probably not finish this series.
Is a good read. Not as much action as I would like but did not know it was a first book in a series. I liked the main characters, and that is always a plus. I like the author and will look forward to the next chapter to finish the story.
Before Lawless had a name it was just a place where gold was mined and fortunes could be made and lost. We step back in time to when Caleb Cantrell along with Kitty Welch met and became part of the past which lays the foundation for the future. Caleb Cantrell finds himself in this place after discovering gold and manages to release a multitude of unexpected creatures. But instead of oversized prehistoric predators we end up with something smaller and yet far deadlier. I did take note of the room that Caleb found himself hiding in, what a nice way to point to the future and for those of you who have not read the previous books it is time to correct that error. Katie Berry does not disappoint. Once again this author has risen to the challenge and is successful. Katie Berry terrorizes you in this new book by introducing you to oversized creatures that most already fear in their normal state, one of them I actually think highly of and she managed to cause me to be fearful.
Caleb Cantrell along with Kitty Welch are a grand pair. Sandy is just a sweet adorable giant.. Dr. Cornelius Brown is an interesting character. As for Jesús and the Hole in the Wall Gang, well karma is a real thing.
It was different going back in time after reading the books set in modern times. But, it's a good different because we are learning the history of the town. Brought up in old journals found in the buildings damaged by the quake. This was a good book but i won't give any spoilers away. There are some great characters that are likeable. Also the bad guys. This book ended at an exciting bit and I'm reading book treo straight away. Thanks again Katie for another brilliant book. It kept me involved all the way through.
This was a wonderful book. I did not think that it would be very good. I was very glad I read it. It turned out to be well written and enjoyable. It really should have been read first, but the way it turned out the author had it exactly right. It really made much more sense to read the books in this order. Now you get a true picture of what lead up to the other books. I am getting ready to read the next book in this particular series. The continuity is really fantastic. The characters are alive and so real. The author has outdone herself and the series is awesome.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE EVERYTHING I'VE READ IN THIS SERIES!!
I have been a fan of Katie Berry and her books (especially in this series) ever since I read her very first book, appropriately entitled CLAW, lol! This is a prequel to the first book (CLAW) involving Caleb Cantrell, . . . and whoops! I almost gave out some spoilers here! *grin* I guess you should check into this series and see what my squawking here is all about! Trust me . . . if you like a really good old fashioned creature feature, then this is the series for you!
Upon immersing myself in Katie Berry's first installment of the CLAW Emergence series, "From the Shadows," the initial excitement of reentering her thriller world was palpable. Her expertise in the genre shone through, drawing me into a tale where characters from her short stories took center stage.
The story unfolded at a nice pace, skillfully balancing scares and intrigue with great and original storytelling. Berry's signature style kept me engrossed, making "From the Shadows" a page-turner. While I've criticised the author's writing of dialogue in the past, this book was spot-on. Her best yet.
Yet, my enthusiasm waned due to a significant drawback. Berry's penchant for abrupt endings (as was the case in the ABANDONED series), and this time it was not even a cliffhanger approach, left me questioning whether my book's edition was faulty. Consequently, I recommend indulging in this trilogy by reading all books immediately one after the other. It will make for a more satisfying reading experience.
Very good historical book of lawless BC, where first meet Caleb and Kitty. Good reading but the critters do me in! Shivers! Caleb open the door way to the past, accidentally and brought some creepy crawlers with him when he returned to town. Reminds me of those spider movies, you know what’s going to happen but you still have to watch or in this case turn the pages to see what happens—— cliffhanger! But I have book 4 in hand to read!
Left off on a Cliffhanger, which isn't my favorite, but I love the characters so much, I don't mind. Especially since I'm reading all 3 books back to back. Very entertaining. It's like a tv show in my minds eye!
You are taken back in time where gangs take what they want , this one person had a lot of gold that was stolen. This person was in the Canada mountains he remember cave that was special , but everything went real bad for him . The author did a good job with the book , keeps you wanting more.
This was a good story if I hadn't read about 126 pages of it in a couple of short stories dealing with Caleb Cantrill and Kitty Welch. Now the action was good and the characters are interesting, but having to read part of the book again was hard going. So just a warning don't read the two short stories just read this one or you will feel you have been had.
Katie Berry is so magical. Every book feels like you are settling in with friends. Her characters Caleb and Kitty are such a fantastic duo who you cannot help but root for. We start out as a gold rush western story that morphs into a fun creature feature. So glad this is a series. I haven’t had enough of Lawless. What a fantastic cliff hanger!
