When your imaginary boyfriend turns up in your hometown, marriage is the only option.
I’m not anti-relationship, but my life is good right now, and love is not a priority. Too bad my grandmother disagrees. People say she’s scary, and sure, some of her enemies went missing under mysterious circumstances, but she loves me and wants the best for me… which, right now, is marriage. The matchmaking is a lot, and she’s not letting up. What’s a demon to do except invent a long-distance boyfriend?
That backfires hard when the one-night stand I based my fake boyfriend on arrives in our tiny village. Garrett’s here to help our cut-off town assimilate with the rest of the Community of Species. He’s not expecting to find he has a boyfriend he knew nothing about.
It doesn’t take me long to convince him to agree to my new plan. I need the matchmaking to stop; he needs our insular little community to accept and trust him. The perfect solution: marriage. A business agreement with a time limit.
Just business.
Until he demands more. A sexy, nerdy hellhound in my bed isn’t a deal breaker.
But as we get closer to our end date, it gets harder for me to imagine life without him. And when my little cousin goes missing, it’s Garrett who saves the day… and reveals secrets the village didn’t know we had.
In this hilarious spin-off from the Hidden Species series, Gideon's cousins get their time to shine... beginning with Asher and his brand-new hellhound husband.
LOUISA MASTERS started reading romance much earlier than her mother thought she should. While other teenagers were sneaking out of the house, Louisa was sneaking romance novels in and working out how to read them without being discovered. She’s spent most of her life feeling sorry for people who don’t read, convinced that books are the solution to every problem. As an adult, she feeds her addiction in every spare second, only occasionally tearing herself away to do things like answer the phone and pay bills. She spent years trying to build a “sensible” career, working in bookstores, recruitment, resource management, administration, and as a travel agent, before finally conceding defeat and devoting herself to the world of romance novels. Louisa has a long list of places first discovered in books that she wants to visit, and every so often she overcomes her loathing of jet lag and takes a trip that charges her imagination. She lives in Melbourne, Australia, where she whines about the weather for most of the year while secretly admitting she’ll probably never move.
I liked this just as much as the first time, this series can be read on its own. If you did want to know Alistar, Sam or Gideon, you could read the "Hidden Species" series, but its not needed.
The second book is out and the audiobook for this one and book two is on Scribd.
4 stars: April 2023
This was such a win for me haha. Marriage of convenience between two people who only had one nice to hook up and found out later that they now live in the same isolated city.
I feel like this could be read on its own. while yes reading the “Hidden Species” series could help you know some of the side characters: Sam, Gideon, Alistair, Aiden, Caolan, David, Andrew, and Noah. I feel like they are just there some of the time.. well, Alistair, Gideon and Sam make the most appearances since Alistair is Garrett’s cousin and Gideon is Asher’s. They don’t do anything to the plot. You don’t feel like you’re missing out on critical information not reading the first series haha.
I loved seeing Asher and Garrett in their relationship as well as the rest of the demon town.
Recently I have been not enjoying Louisa Masters books but this one hit it out of the park for me!
also Joel Leslie did a great job with the narration and I can’t wait for book two!!
I think this is my favourite book in all of these interlinked series so far. It was nice to not have some sense of impending doom for the first time.
I loved Garrett, especially in his Hellhound moments and his rivalry with Alistair. Asher was quite possibly the most sensible character so far, but it was funny when he started getting so possessive and protective of Garrett.
Also loved how Caolan and his bro Alistair behaved at the wedding, and basically any time they appeared - they're like overgrown Frat Bros and I love it 😂
When your Grandmother won't stop playing matchmaker, what's the best way to get her off your back? Invent a long-distance boyfriend, of course.
What you don't want to do is base that invented boyfriend off of a recent hook-up. Then you run the risk of said hook up turning up at your isolated village as the newly hired teacher.
But don't sweat it too much, because your former hook-up will agree to a marriage of convenience. Your Grandmother's matchmaking will be mollified and your new husband gets an in into the village's tight-knit community.
Just try not to actually fall in love with your husband along the way.
__ Asher was such a fun read. It has that Louisa Masters' humour, set in the same world as her Hidden Species and Here Be Dragons series. With cameo's from character's from those series'.
Asher is the grandson of essentially the matriarch of the small village. It's isolated, with a population of only demons located in the Swiss Alps. Garrett, a hellhound, is hired as a teacher to educate the students about other species, and help integrate the village with the wider world of species.
The romance between Garrett and Asher is great. With an interesting plot that expanded this world nicely. Some of my favourite scenes are the students and Garrett playing while he's shifted into his hellhound form - too cute!
Important notes: One, the demons in law series goes after the hidden species series and the here be dragons series. Read both of those before coming here. Pinky promise it's worth it. Second, goodreads doesn't seem to be adding the short stories anymore to the lists, so be warned. There is a short free story called reunion that goes before this book. It is an introduction to the plot of the series and this book in particular. You won't be completely clueless without it, but events in there are mentioned here and it will make more sense if you read it first.
Ok, now to the review. If the stars didn't clue it, I loved it. Garret might be the most serious hellhound ever, but that doesn't remove his very own whimsy streak and love for sparkles. And he makes a wonderful husband to Asher! Love it love it love it!
Louisa Masters' Hidden Species world just makes me smile and I'm so glad she's not finished with it just yet.
Here we're with the demons, who've been living in pretty much isolation deep in the Swiss Alps without really considering the effects of not mixing with the other species has on their children.
Lucifer Sam's plans to encourage other members of the community to move to Hortzplatz firstly involves an educational program led by hellhound professor Garrett Smythe.
Yes, he's related to Alistair, a cousin in fact, one who's considered a bit of a black sheep because he's quiet and more serious.
He's not expecting to bump into his one-night stand when he arrives in the village, nor that he's also apparently said demon's boyfriend and theyre engaged!
Fake boyfriend/marriage tropes are one of my favourites and here Louisa mixes it up with a couple of other secondary narratives to concoct a truly delightful tale.
Watching as Asher and Garrett actually fall for each other while simultaneously believing they're just good friends with incredible sexual compatibility is very funny.
Throw in the rest of Asher's demon cousins, Alastair's enthusiastic and well-meaning shenanigans, and I had a smile on my face from start to finish.
I'm beyond intrigued by the prospect of Micah and his love interest, which I won't be spoiling here, and I'm now trying to think who might be the candidate for the final cousin, Zac.
I pretty much find the fake boyfriend/husband trope overused and kind of boring, so this story was just ok. Like the universe though, and it's always cool to see characters from previous books. I'm looking forward to Micah's book, next.
I love these characters and story so much!! I was sad when I read what I thought was the last book, and rejoiced when this spin-off was announced!
Asher, demon cousin of Gideon, needs his very scary grandma to stop with all the matchmaking, trying to find him a spouse. Garrett, hellhound cousin of Alistair, is hired to do a job in the secluded town where Asher's family lives. Before starting said job, Garrett has a very steamy one night stand with a demon. Yes, Asher. And Asher, a few days later is lying to his grandma saying he has a boyfriend and his name is Garrett. Chaos is in the air! Fun and sweet chaos when the two of them make a deal to a marriage of (their) convenience. But the both of them obviously like each other and one of the rules of their deal is to be exclusive, so it is 100% real but obviously they won't notice until much later. Luckily fir me, the book is very low on angst and their romance is not the only main theme of the book. We get to uncover mysteries that will see the characters from all the books to make an appearance. It was such a fantastic reunion and it made me want so much to already have the next book!
The writing is as usual so easy to follow and the dialogues are so much fun. It's hard to put down. I really enjoyed this a lot and want more!
Asher and Garrett meet in Zurich and spend a scorching night together. A Demon and a Hellhound, imagine! They split to never see each other again.
Back home Asher’s scary demanding grandmother insists Asher seek a partner and get married, at last, he makes up a fake boyfriend, a teacher, not a demon, who's named Garrett, to keep her off his back.
What are the odds… Garrett has a one-year teaching contract, exactly in the place where Asher lives. Yes, they meet again, it’s awkward because Asher has to explain the situation he created about Garrett being his boyfriend. There’s a solution, they are already sexually compatible, and a fake marriage would be the solution. No sooner said than done!
What was planned for just a year, a fake marriage, turns into liking each other very much, with overprotective and possessive feelings, the need to make the other happy, and a sweet romance with a HEA. An amazing funny story, with demons, hellhounds, sorcerers, and succubus. Add some crazy meddling families, friends, and a little mystery, and voila you got a very pleasant very enjoyable experience.
Such a stressful day. Ended with Such a perfect experience. Talking about species interactions. On top of a grandmother that's a openly known murderer. And an indecent proposal of marriage to a one night stand. One that was suppose to be a one off. Never to be seen again. Jokes on them!
Shenanigans unfolded, sparkle drinks so ones inside could sparkle too. Oh the joy!
By now, if you are reading a Hidden Species series book, you know it's more about the world building and not so much about the romance. Not that there is no romance, but its not front and center. This first story was spent building up the new demon town and the surprise found around 80% in.
Spoilers ahead
Ok so in here we have Garrett, a hellhound cousin of Alastair and Asher, a demon cousin of Gideon. If you read the other books you know that Gideon's family live in a swiss town that knows nothing about the other beings. After the whole cult situation, the lucifer aka as Sam, decides that no species member should be that isolated. Which has them hiring Garrett to come teach the demon kids and find a way to integrate other species.
These two meet in a bar in Zurich and have a one night stand. Neither one knows that they will be ending up in the same town. After being scared by the Grandmother Demon, they decide to fake a marriage and have an end date for after the time Garrett was supposed to live.
Then it's literally slice of life with time jumps. Something happens, then its two months later. Or a month or weeks, but you get my point. The wedding ceremony was over the top of course.
So more slice of life happens and these two never have a conversation about feelings. At all. Then suddenly in a cave after overhearing a conversation, its all I love you and want to stay married.
I did not feel like this book was really about them as it seemed to just hand wave feelings and this is coming from a person who loved Sam and Gideon's book where there was a one night stand and then a 5 year time jump and the boom! relationship. The funny thing is that the whole Sam and Gideon romance was mentioned in this book. I laughed when I read it. These two were together from day one and never were apart.
The more interested things happened at 80% on. I can't wait to find out what all is in that cave.
And yes all the people showed up in this story. The mcs from the original series and some from the Dragon spin off. If one day we find out that the world where the haunted hotel is in the Hidden Species world, it would not surprise me. I don't mind them showing up, what I minded was that they didn't act like themselves. Especially Sam.
I am officially saving myself from this train wreck of a book. First, it was my bizarre interpretation of the blurb (and the trope it mentioned) then I realized just what series/universe is this book from and... it only got downhill from there.
You know those characters that are annoying but like in a cute way? Like, they're goofy, funny, really and help you not take life too seriously? Well, they're the worst, IMHO. And they all live in this book.
They don't really, but they might as well. In fact, there are so many annoying side characters I realized I would actually like this book without the side characters because the main couple is fine, though naturally, the challenges would be different in that case because family is basically their main reason for everything, from getting together to getting married to arguing to make-up sex...
I just can't stand them. In fact, I can't think of a single side character... okay, I liked the two teachers. But then they were in, like, two scenes and said like, two sentences or so.
But even if I ignore annoying cousins (on both) sides or they're-supposed-to-be-cute-really-they-are children, I'd still sorely, strongly dislike the grandma. I am sorry (not) but this type of character just rubs the absolutely worst way and they are, unfortunately, was too popular in gay romance.
Hear me out here, people who read the genre. Do you remember any /usually female/ characters that were scary? The scary/tough factor is usually mentioned first before it is inevitably softened with "she just loves *insert name/group*" as an excuse. She is usually have handed, either in a position of power or family member (which is really the same thing). Maybe it's the female caption of the precinct (detective) or it's someone's mum, either way, they represent a type of uber female idol I just can't stand. Maybe it's the supposed perfection, maybe it's simply the effect she has on other characters, maybe I am just tired of everyone making excuses for their poor behaviour - newsflash, there are many ways people can be protective and loving and being insufferable bossy is the worst one. Maybe it's the combination of kick-ass and genuinely caring that make me want to tear stuff - like they tried making a badass but she was female so they decided to add "loving" and called it the new Mona Lisa.
Anyway, I am frustrated, nay, angry at the side characters since I want to get rid of them all, basically and they take up so much page space I can¨t do this to myself any longer. Thank you but no thank you.
4.5/5 stars! Everything Louisa writes is filled with humor, minimal angst, and sweet spice. This was no exception. The Demons-in-Law series is a spin off/continuation from the Hidden Species series. In this entry, we get a fake marriage plotline between a Demon and a Hellhound. Garrett and Asher were very sweet. Were there moments I wished for a bit more; more spice, more communication, more storyline? Yes. But it was a quick and entirely delightful read.
This was a super choppy read. It was one of those books that jumps forward in time quite a lot and there were absolutely no transitions between chapters to ease you into the time jumps. I don't know if this book was rushed or the author just doesn't understand what a transition is, but it was fairly horrible to see the same problem throughout the whole book. The last 20% of the book was also super boring and I just skimmed it. All in all, I have to say this was a major disappointment.
4.5 stars Garrett wasn’t happy when his cousin, Alistair calls ultra early and explains they needed teachers in the Swiss Alps. The demon clans needed a teacher for their young which excited Garrett to jump at the chance. He decides he’d stay for a year but fate has other plans. Asher, a demon, was heading home after a short time away and arrives to welcome the new teacher at a dinner party. Asher’s tried of having his grandmother set him up on dates which Micah steps in to help in his own way. A hot hookup for them both with their first meeting, without knowing what would happen later in the story. A fake marriage arrangement happens when they meet for the second time, Asher was fast to figure out there may have fates involved too. Along with the teaching, Garrett and his team has the job of educating all of the demons with knowledge of other paranormals in society. Garrett, a hellhound, with Anne, a succubus and Sid, a sorcerer. A story moves to play out their arrangement that becomes permanent. Sexy scenes, humours, emotions are all included. I really liked this book especially with the pace being just right without the boring bits. Micah has a habit of telling porkies lies, I had to laugh about the glitter story. A year flys by with the help of time skips helping the story along. I’m usually not a fan of skips but this book is a perfect fit for them given the time set for the storyline.
A great ending with emotions high but not before there’s dramas with a missing child and they dicovery more, for a bit of mystery. Told with both povs for an HEA ending. Yeah, I think I’ll be grabbing Macah’s story next when it releases.
Whenever I start listening to an audiobook at 3x speed it's never a good sign. And the thing is I knew what I was getting myself into with the whole 'fake marriage' trope, but damn it was way worse.
Half of the entire story was about the two mcs preparing for their 'marriage of convenience', which included mudane tasks, bickering and some family drama. And Everything is sprinkle with some meaningless sex, as always with these tropes. But atleast I though I would like the characters......nope they were probably one of the most bland, forgettable characters ever and the chemistry was non existent.
The only thing I mildly enjoyed was the whole cave thing at the end. Other than that nothing really captured me.
P.s. I really loved Joel Leslie's narration and probably the only reason why I didn't DNF it. But I will continue with series to get to book 3, which sounded the most interesting one out of these 3.
Asher it’s the first book in this new series Demons in Law, this was fun and entertaining, Asher is Gideon’s cousin and we meet him in a previous novella and Garret who is Alistair's cousin. This is a fake boyfriend romance. Garrett was invited to stay at and teach in a village that has only demons as residents. They want to integrate more species to the village and this is a great opportunity for Garrett as anthropologist. The only problem is that they don’t trust easily. Asher and his cousins are constantly harassed by his grandmother to find a partner and get married and have children, it’s was fun how all of them were afraid of her. At one of the time Asher was hounded be her one of his cousins let his grandmother know that Asher was seeing someone and they invented a boyfriend who was Asher’s one night stand, what Asher didn’t know was that at the next day he was going face to face with Garrett his fake boyfriend. This was was a really fun to read, Asher and Garrett slowly getting to know each other and falling in love, these two have a great connection and the chemistry was of the charts, there was a discovery that would helps to set up the next book and I’m looking forward to. We have a few cameos with previous characters of the hidden species books and I love it! Sam you were the best!! Lol
I get very excited when I learn that a new book in the Hidden Species/Here Be Dragons universe is announced and this first book in the Demons-In-Law series didn’t let me down. Asher is a demon with the scariest Grandmother ever who wants him married and giving her baby demons to love. Garrett is a Hellhound with interests in teaching and social anthropology. After one very steamy night together they go their separate ways never to meet again. Of course circumstances have them back in each other’s orbit in the secluded village where the demons live.
So begins a very enjoyable story of fake boyfriends/marriage of convenience who fall in love after getting to know one another better and find their HEA. It’s an engaging low angst romance with a nice mix of sweet and steam, some great side characters to keep things interesting and some laugh out loud moments (drunk Sam makes a reappearance). My heart was happy as I read this book and I was smiling at the end. There’s a sneak peak at the next in the series and I can’t wait for it!
I love Garrett and Asher. They have a similar "meet cute" as Asher's cousin Gideon and Sam. They don't expect to ever see each other again, but surprise surprise, they do. Chaos and shenanigans ensue. The wedding scenes were amazing and hilarious. We get to see Alistair and Aiden again, as well as Gideon and Sam. We get to experience drunk Sam again which had me cackling. The discovery at the end is very intriguing. So, overall, this is a great start to this new series. It's a lit of fun, completely ridiculous, easy to read, and just all in all entertaining. It's a good time.
DNF at 17%. Given the number of named characters sans much further info, I must assume this book is one in a collection of series in the same world, and the author failed to give new readers enough worldbuilding. But also, the characterizations are so thin that I kept mixing up which character was which, which is not great. Anyway, too many better books to read, done with this one. At least it was free.
Honestly so good. I really dislike fake marriage tropes so I put this one off - but this was so enjoyable. The characters were witty and hilarious, the connected family & friend groups - and there was no drama, back and forth or angst in regards to staying together - the “drama” in the book was outside the relationship which I LOVED. I’m so glad there is a series - I’m onto Micah’s book next I hope we get a lot more of Garrett and Asher ❤️
Really enjoyed Asher. I do love a marriage of convenience plot, especially the part where they decide that they want to stick it out for good. This part became almost secondary to another plot and I kind of liked that it wasn't a big drama. It was more of an "Oh, I want this," thing
hilarious! aboslutely hilarious! Louisa Masters demonic romances give me so much life. not only are they all connected in a way or another but they are just has funny as the other. this one had the troped i've always loved reading : hook-up, second meeting, fake dating with an over invested family member, and the great he falls first he falls harder !
This was a great introduction to the latest spin off featuring the great humour from the Hellhound side of the family as well as getting to know Demons better. Marriage of convenience turned real is always a good trope to read
