I had the privilege of beta-reading this book and oh my. It is fantastic.

I adored Kat and her protective nature with her younger sister, Val. She's a strong character but knows when she needs help.

Aris and Trystan were phenomenal and I actually found myself loving Trystan so much. The banter between the brothers is hilarious and all of Trystan's little comments to Val made me LOL.

This book took so many surprising twists and turns. And then that ending had my jaw hitting the floor.

I cannot wait to read more from this author and to read the next book in the series! I totally need more Trystan, Val, Kat, and Aris in my life!

Somewhere between three and four stars, but I think a couple uses of a trope I personally dislike have it closer to three,. 3.5?

This was overall fun and maybe a touch cheesy but in a good way--like a cheese pizza. 😆 It does have a touch of darkness to it, what with the concept centering around someone(s) attacking women, a POV character getting roofied at the beginning, and a hunt to find out who is making the magic-laced drug, but overall, it didn't really feel that serious/heavy--not that it didn't treat that as a serious crime (it very much didn't downplay how heinous the perpetrators are), but the book didn't constantly focus on that darkness, so it didn't feel heavy to read past the opening couple chapters, if that makes sense. In fact, from the blurb, I think I'd expected a bit more suspense, almost thriller, but it's really mostly the MCs hanging out and flirting and ogling and kissing.

It's spice-free, but not steam-free, and the near constant "the way my body reacts around him/her" and some of the longer kiss descriptions were a bit 🙄😑 for me. There is actual personality and values attraction that redeemed it, it's not all physical, at least for Kat and Aris. Trystan and Val...less so, but their relationship also didn't progress as much--not even really a relationship in any real sense.

I kind of wish it had focused on only Kat and Aris and let Trystan and Val be the focus in a future book, especially because Trystan mildly annoyed me at times, but 🤷‍♀️. I get why, given the plot, they're all four POV characters.

I'm also not totally sure I'd describe the relationships as healthy. Val and Trystan, definitely not, but they both have maturing to do and seem like they'll get those arcs, and again, not quite actually a relationship. Kat and Aris...it felt a bit like the book wasn't sure if it wanted to fulfill expectations of an alpha hole, controlling, broody, "I am irresistible to human females" fae male or subvert those expectations, and never quite felt to me like it committed to either, which at times almost made Aris feel a bit inconsistent, but I think I forgive it because maybe he's supposed to be because he is conflicted within himself. I also don't really like the "I'll be a jerk/terrifying/do something threatening to scare you away for your own safety" trope. But Kat and Aris are both fairly well-rounded and I appreciated that Kat was neither a total badass who doesn't need Aris nor a pushover weakling clinging to him, just...a woman with fears and strength. And Aris is kind of a trope-y "looks like a tough bad boy but has a heart of gold" but I enjoy that trope a lot, so it mostly worked for me.

I have gripes about other issues--how Kat is working constantly at a part-time job that she doesn't work at constantly and manages an apartment building that is apparently not making money and she has no office hours for and never has time to work on repairs despite that she doesn't work her other job in the morning?, at least once that it certainly seems like a fae lied despite that they can't in this worldbuilding, and that there are many places where there should have been paragraph breaks and there wasn't that made things confusing.

And yet, overall, I had fun. 😆 I enjoyed my cheese pizza (and very much appreciated that it was free of olives--I mean, spice 😛 I've read very little UF because I'm not interested is spice and so many UF series seem really long...). So if you like fae-human urban fantasy romance that is heavy on the romance but without spicy scenes and that has just enough worldbuilding to be interesting without being super complex and want a fairly quick and fun read (and you don't mind major cliffhangers), I'd probably recommend this. And I'll probably read the next book when it releases. It was enough to hold my attention when I've been a bit reading-slumpy lately, so it definitely had that going for it. 😊

must read swoon-fest

I want to start my review with this: I am not normally a fantasy reader. Most of my books are contemporary Christian romance to some degree. But since this book has been posted all over Bookstagram, i knew i had to give it a chance. And boy am I glad I did! Kat and Aris had chemistry that was palpable all while keeping it a clean romance. Trystan and Val were a couple made in mismatched heaven and I can not wait to see what the next book brings!

Oh my goodness what a thrilling story!! I haven’t read a clean mystical, suspense book in a while and this one had me unable to put it down. I was on the edge of my seat almost the whole time anticipating what could happen next with the suspense and the electricity between the characters. I enjoyed the little tidbits of fantasy that were released slowly throughout the story having me guessing about their mystical powers. Loved the bond of family between the characters and the desire to be a protector for each other. The unfolding of the romantic tension had me swooning. You will want to read this and at the end your mouth will be left dropped open and begging for book 2.

Midnight Rider: Fae of Falls River Book One by Stormie Black.
A clean urban fantasy romance with snark, witty banter, and mystery.
Multiple POV, this adds more depth and humor to the story. Our main POVs are Kat and Aris, but we also get their siblings Trystan and Val.
From the start of this book I was hooked, from the depth of care and love Kat has for her sister to the attack on Kat.
I will add that this book because of what happens in the beginning could be triggering for some individuals. There is talk of brutality on women, women being drugged (which you see with Kat), and violence on the perpetrator. The violence is not graphic and very mild considering the situation.
After saving Kat, Aris takes her somewhere safe to help her and after doing so the two enter into a deal.
I'm not sure about you but I have read enough fantasy that I would hesitate at making a deal with a fae. Kat our brave, determined, and snarky heroine doesn't. I did tell her, even though she couldn't hear me 🤣, that this will come back to bite her. Far are tricky individuals!
Aris, our broody bad boy, is the Midnight Rider. A vigilante. I love a good vigilante, one with a dark and painful past, one with a big heart buried deep within, one that is willing to do what is necessary for the greater good. Aris is all of that. In a good looking motorcycle riding package.
Kat is overprotective and almost determined to run her sisters life, this is a constant conversation throughout the book. This is part of Kats growth arc, learning to trust others and her sister. Allowing herself to grieve and heal.
Aris, his growth arc is also trust based but for different reasons. He took needs to heal and be more open.
As this is book one in the series the characters growth is only just beginning.
While the book is fast paced there isn't instalove! This is a great thing in my opinion.
I will warn you there is a cliffhanger and I do not know when the next book comes out but I will definitely be reading it!
No language, mild violence, and clean sweet romance.
I recommend and this is going into the reread pile.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Do you like to try new genres? I was so excited to read an Urban, Fantasy book for the first time! Stormie Black’s new book “Midnight Rider,” was such a good start! I was instantly sucked into the story with crime, mystery, and handsome Fae men!

While the story was a bit more serious it wasn’t scary or too violent for me. It was clean, with no swear words and I really appreciated that! And it had little bursts of romance which I of course, enjoyed a lot!! I loved all the characters. I feel like Kat and Val were written so well and I feel like I connected with them instantly! Aries, what a man… I mean Fae! And I loved that we got Trystan as well, he was a great addition!

This book was so interesting and I am definitely ready for book 2! I need to know what’s next!! If you want to try something new, check out this one! It’s Now Available and so dang good!!! You will love it, I am confident!!🖤

I’ve been hearing great things about this book, and I’m happy to say it lived up to the hype. I’m always on the lookout for good, clean urban fantasy, and this fits the bill. It features wonderful characters, great worldbuilding, and an intriguing mystery.

I will say that this had a slow start, but it wasn’t long before things ramped up and I became fully invested.

I liked the fact that we got chapters from not only Aris and Kat’s POVs but Trystan and Val’s as well. I admired Kat’s fiery resolve and determination to protect her sister. And even though she was bossy and demanding at times, I ended up liking her. Aris was a great leading man. I loved his sense of honor and heroic actions. Even though he doesn’t believe it, he’s truly a good guy.

I was surprised that this book ends on a pretty big cliffhanger, but thankfully the series is complete and the rest of the books are already out. If you’re a fan of K.M. Shea’s urban fantasy books, you’ll love this series.

Oh. My. GOSH. I didn't know this was going to end on a cliffhanger!!! Stormie Black! We need the next book YESTERDAY!!!

Ok. So. I've been on this whirlwind of a ride with a couple of faes and "their" girls. It amazes me how a seemingly normal author can bring mythical creatures to life. Or ARE they mythical...?

I was lost in this story as soon as I started it, and now I MUST read the next one, ASAP!! That's all the words I have. I'm still reeling!

Amazing Read!

A clean and passionate read. This was my first urban fantasy novel, and it did not disappoint. This book was a captivating, engaging read that had me wanting more.
This is a narrative about family relationships as well as romantic ones. I loved how this book tackled a range of relationships and explored their complexities.
The chemistry between the main characters was electric, and I found myself wanting more of their interactions as the story progressed. However, the primary characters were not the only ones that received attention; there were two extra POVs, one from each main character's brother and sister. The chemistry between them was equally strong, although of a different nature. I didn't think I'd like Trystan, but his loyalty and devotion to his brother, as well as the way he teased Val, eventually won me over. I can hardly wait for the next book.

Absolutely loved this book! I haven't read many Fae romance books but this one is perfection!

I love the chemistry between Aris and Kat. I love that he is grumpy and brooding yet he is so soft around Kat. I love that he is her protector and is her steady support.

I love the mystery and suspense in this book! It makes it so hard to put this book down and do anything else. I read it in a day and cannot wait for book 2 since this one does end on a huge cliffhanger. If I had to wait more than a few minutes to start book 2 I would be so upset haha.

Between seeing Aris and Kat's relationship grow as well as Val and Trystan's this books just gives you so many things to look forward to as you turn page after page.

I’m only upset that it took me so long to get to this book! What a fun ride! It’s been awhile since I’ve read a good urban fantasy romance, so this was a breath of fresh air. Absolutely loved this one. You get hilarious banter, motorcycle rides at night and a tough heroine to top it off. I think Kat is possibly one of my favorite FMC’s that I’ve read in an urban fantasy in awhile. Oh, did I also mention the handsome, broody “Midnight Rider” to make you weak in the knees? (you do not want to miss out on the romance!)

There’s so much to love—except that cliffhanger LOL. So I’ll be riding into the next book fairly quickly now!

Swoony romantic urban fantasy

I'm not a huge reader of urban fantasy but I am a heavy romance reader. I read through this so fast! The story is well paced and engaging and I loved the characters who are relatable and multidimensional. I knew it was going to be a cliff-hanger, but I didn't know it was going to be a hang on by your fingernails kind of cliffhanger. I can't wait for the next book!

Urban fantasy is not normally my jam so I went into this one with low expectations. I ended up thoroughly enjoying this read!

Kat is determined to protect her sister and ends up teaming up with two Fae brothers to ensure her sisters safety.

What I Liked:
- broody fae brothers
- TWO romances
- strong sister bonds
- action with an element of mystery

I’m excited to see where things go in book two!

I devoured Midnight Rider 🖤

From the snarky banter, multiple povs and the bond of family, I was locked in from the start! Kat is awesome! She is fierce, and bold and is doing all she can to keep her family together. The love she has for her sister is going to push her into some out of this world situations, even going as far as sealing a promise with a Fae that would come at a cost. I preordered my own copy and I can’t wait for release day so I can tag all my favorite lines and count the days to book 2 Moonlight and Silver because OMG the ending of book 1! If you love clean urban fantasy this is for you!

I received an eARC from the author, all opinions are my own 😊

Midnight Rider was mind-blowingly good!! Like, I did not expect this to be such a wild ride, for me to get to care so much for these characters, or to fly by the last pages as quickly as I did (also, I somehow missed the memo, or simply forgot, that this one ended up in a cliffhanger, so now I'm impatiently waiting for the next one!)

Now, it must be said that the first part of this book was a bit slow or hard to get into (I'm not sure I'm accurately describing my feelings, but that was the idea) for me, but that was to be expected since this was a new book with new characters by a new to me author. However, her writing is really good and just like Kat, I couldn't tell when exactly did I find myself so wrapped in the story/mystery. And what an adventure it was! I loved getting to know Kat and Aris, their wounded pasts, their build of trust, and their slow burn/fall for each other. For reals, their chemistry was *chef's kiss* and speaking of kisses, after all that banter, teasing, and sparks, that first kiss (and all the following) were definitely worth the wait. What I hadn't realized from the blurb and/or teasers was how important to the story were Trystan and Valerie going to be, but they were great. I admit Val had to grow on me, but once she did, and started changing/growing throughout the story, I started liking her more and looking forward to her interactions with Trystan. Their banter was also fun, and it was really cute getting to see them slowly open up and/or fight/deny their feelings for each other.

Overall, this book is an excellent debut in this genre for Stormie Black, and it's perfect for fans of all things Fae, Urban Fantasy, Romantic Fantasy, and all the sibling banter. Completed recommended, and I seriously can't wait for the next one! ~ 5 stars!

I had to dnf.

DNF’ed at 18%

The characters just did not feel real mainly Kat. Her character voice wasn’t natural. I just felt like everything went way too smoothly to where it didn’t feel natural. I like the setting it was good time in the beginning, but as they got into the mystery it was feeling like Kat just went along with everything no questions asked and it’s supposed to be for her sister, but like idk her internal dialogue drove me nuts.

This book was really interesting and unique, although I definitely didn’t expect the cliffhanger ending (I believe there’s a sequel). The romance was good, although slow for a while. I was surprised at how the story twisted and turned, and enjoyed the way the four main characters were developed.

I was very excited to read this book because I’ve been into urban fantasy lately, and it is hard to find clean urban fantasies. This was a great one!

I was so invested in this story! The characters are intriguing, and the mystery aspect kept me turning pages as quickly as I could. I loved the writing style, and I thought about the characters whenever I wasn’t reading the book.

There are so many fun aspects to this story including swoonworthy romance, tracking down a villain, grumpy fae, and motorcycle rides!

I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Just finished and on my way to buy book 2

What can I say?!?

This is the first book I read by Stormie Black. I found it scrolling through Bookstagram.

So, I liked the story, the concept of them being fae and all the mystery solving. The faith content wasn't as present as I would have liked, but you can see it there. Also, (if I'm not mistaken) this is a clean book and although it is clean, I, personally, found some scenes that had more details than what I would prefer (nothing R rated or anything like that... just minor things that really revolve more around my personal likes and dislikes).

Now, the only reason I'm not giving this book 5 stars is because of the CLIFFHANGER... LIKE... WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO ME? The end was so sudden I barely had time to breathe. Now, I have to go and buy book 2 😭😁. Also, there were some details that I skipped (because I'm not the type to like many details scenes), but apart from that, it was a good fae book.

Now, I'm literally heading in to kindle to buy book 2 cause I can't even sleep without knowing how the story will unfold.

Toodles and blessings ⚘️

"I swear, if the dark magic threatening Falls Rive doesn't get me first, these bad boy faes are going to be the death of me."

This was such an exciting start to a series! Urban Fantasy is a fairly new genre for me, but I am growing to love it. Midnight Rider is about Kat, a feisty young woman that is trying to pick up the pieces of her family after the death of her mother. While out looking for her sister, she runs into trouble and is rescued by the super mysterious vigilante called the "Midnight Rider". I mean, can you say swoon??

They get swept into a whirlwind of romance and mystery; what more could you ask for? If you are a fan of KM Shea's Magiford series or Karen Lynch's Fae Games, I think you'll really like this book.

The author’s name, Stormie Black, is a really cool name. I’m not sure what to say about this book. I want to give it a two star bc Kat and Val drove me nuts. But I liked the fae world and the midnight rider aspect of it. The romance made no sense to me bc I feel like Kat never did anything to endear herself to Aris. But I love Aris and his brother Trystans relationship. They were definitely my favorite part. I imagined Aris like a dark haired biker bad boy Legolas so I wasn’t mad about that. I finished the book so it held my attention and the cliffhanger makes me want to start the next one.

SPOILERS and book notes:
The midnight rider save the women who are being taken at night. He is fae and has magic but tried his very best not to use it for this reason that I love: “Why the Creator chose to gift mystical powers to a race of conceited beings more concerned with their own reflections than the problems in the world, I’ll never know. And yes, I realize I’m a part of that race. But ever since I’ve seen where our power-hungry tendencies lead, I’ve done my best to shun that part of myself, aside from killing it off completely.” So many cool lessons can be taught by this way of thinking. And of course this vigilante rides a sick motorcycle. He was a fae warrior of course in his past. Aris and trystens home reminds me exactly of the Cullen home in twilight. Aris is the badboy dark haired biker fae and tryston is the blond scholarly fae. Aris helps humans during the midnight hours. In New Zealand lived the shapeshifters or Moldrayens. I love that Kat isn’t scared when she finds out the guys are fae but she is deathly afraid of riding on the back of the motorcycle. Same girl. He calls her his “little firefly”. I love that so much. Oo now we get Tristan and Val’s POV. Tristan used to stare at her during a college class haha. And he is cursed to never be able to lie. And she calls him out on it. Tristan is a germaphobe too which is hilarious. Bahaha but Val so far is immature and selfish and a brat…. A dwarf hacker that owns a comic book store! So cool. I love that the fae bros have a pet wolf. I like that the reason aris is grumpy is bc he doesn’t want anyone sucked into his magical charisma. oh my heck aris is a goner for stupid Kat. He would obey any order she gave him and she had fond absolutely nothing for him except criticize. Man Kat and Val drive me INSANE. But I do love their pet wolf so much. I think it’s horrible how they treat people in this book. Like Marcus? Just lead him on? Trystan is supposed to love Val as a wife even though she wants to flirt with other men? So weird. And I love Aris though I don’t see why he loves Kat so much? I hate that the book ended on a cliff hanger but I do love the plot twist that it was Aris twin brother that kidnaps her bc aris accidentally killed his love that the evil twin originally stole from aris. Bahaha that was definitely the best part.

Romance level: kissing🔥 (make outs)

This book is so good! It is actually my first urban fantasy romance. I'm glad it was with Dulcie/Stormi's book. The story is going to hook you in! The plot, the characters, the depth behind it...

It does start on a rather dark topic. My heart hurts for all the women who have been through something like this.

It took some time for my brain to get used to it being about a fae. However, I really liked the story. I liked the plot, the whole mystery & intrigue behind the captures.

Stormi does such an amazing job portraying Aris age/wisdom just having the man/fae talking.

✨"Little Firefly"✨

The chemistry between Kat & Aris was amazing👌🏻🙌🏻 all the longing, their bond....Aris had a way with words! That first kiss??🔥😍 And all the others that followed🔥

I loved seeing Kat developing trust in Aris, knowing he was going to protect her. The whole breaking point moment was so sweet🥺.

Tristan was 😍. His sarcasm & just pure disdain was so funny😂. I loved his involvement in the story and that you get his POV (also Val's).

I had conflicting thoughts at first w/ Val. Like I understood her fear & hurt, but Kat didn't deserved what she was doing. Her character development was so good though 🙌🏻👌🏻

So... I was not expecting that plot wreck. What was even going on? I had my suspicion about it but what a twist!

My heart can't take that ending!!! I need more of this story. I need book 2 ASAP!!!

I love Dulcie's books! I know I'll be definitely reading what she writes as Stormi.

⚠️TW: abduction; abuse (mentioned); being drugged; death of a parent

Midnight Rider is book one in the Fae of Falls River Trilogy by Stormie Black, and it’s also the first fantasy book I have read (aside from Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings) in…decades! Wow, I am so glad this was the book I started with. Full of heart, action, angst, chemistry, and strong family ties, this book starts readers off on an epic journey.
Aris is the strong, silent, broody fae hero, and Trystan is his snarky, book-smart brother. While they may differ in their views of magic, they are fiercely loyal to one another. Kat is strong and dependable, pushing through every obstacle, no matter the consequences, to protect her sister. Valerie holds her true thoughts and struggles close, rarely letting others in to see who she truly is.
Despite how these four come to know one another, the bonds they forge become something they can hang tight on, unifying them in their purpose to fight against the dark forces at work attacking their community.
While book one does end on a cliffhanger (and it IS a doozy), all the sweet moments leading up to it instill readers with hope for a resolution in book two.

I DNF this book. I love urban fantasy and I love clean fantasy (KM Shea is one of my all time favorite writers). But I just could not like this book. I only made it to about 5% but I wanted to quit around 1%...

The writing wasn't great, but since its a debut, I can forgive that. What I had a problem with is the heroine. She was basically an ideal archetype of the caring, good, Christian older sister. She did not come off as real and instead came off as self righteous, especially in regards to her protectiveness of her younger sister (who was an adult and is allowed to engage in whatever behavior she wants).

I am all for clean (and even religious) heroines, but she just felt very false and was annoying. So I had to stop.

If you typically read Christian fiction only, probably won't have a problem with the heroine. If you read clean fantasy like KM Shea, you probably will be like me and not enjoy this.
