The crew goes traveling ... all the way back to 1930. Suddenly, they are strangers, supposedly spending a nice relaxing weekend at the mayor’s mansion. But something sinister hangs in the air. It’s a whodunit as only the DWD could do it

The tenth book in the Lesbian Adventure Club series opens up with a narrator's warning to readers. "Reading the appendix first will ruin the whole book. So, do not frickin' read it until the end ... where it is ... for a damn good reason!" From the very beginning, it's obvious readers are in for quite a different experience.
The basis of this series is that each month, five couples get together with one pair of women hosting and coming up with a devious plan for the weekend. The adventure is that the remaining eight women are not sure what's in store for them, but they know that if they play along and trust in one another they will have an exceptional weekend filled with close friends and a good time had by all. Each adventure is unique, and often a reflection of the women in charge, making for an entertaining and riotous story.
This month Janice and Allison are hosting, and each woman is instructed to not see their partner all day to arrive separately via taxi at seven in the evening, and to be in character. Our narrator Kate is Heady Heaper, a gossip columnist and her partner Claudia is Alberta Cojones, a gangster in a pinstriped suit and fedora. Laura is detective Samantha Spade, Holly is artist Carolina O. Reef, Susan is teacher Vanna Sully, Maggie is women's rights advocate Joan Evves, Kris is psychoeanalyst Dr. Amah Fraud, and Ginny is coffeehouse owner Gertie Stone. Leading the group is Mayor Alison and her Girl Friday, Janice. Obviously, things are a bit twisted, especially as it's no longer present day but instead is 1930 and all the women are strangers, especially the women from each couple.
The weekend's adventure is that there's a mystery afoot, one that is decidedly not a murder. The big-breasted bimbo babe has gone missing, and to win the game she must be found and her captor unmasked. Each woman is determined to recapture the bimbo, but with each having secrets and special directions it's going to be harder than it seems.
"Likely Suspects" is yet another exceptional story in a series that never disappoints. This story is great fun, with each woman taking on a new persona and the constant intermixing of reality and made up characters makes for lots of humor and scrambling about. Everyone has a made-up persona, including Charles who is butler Fritz, Sam known as Swede, and Noelle and Denny who show up briefly as Bonnie and Clyde. These four are some of my favorite secondary characters and I was thrilled they made an appearance, and they help to flesh out the setup for the weekend.
There have been several books with an undercurrent of serious meaning and that is the case here as well, though not as much as some of the previous stories. Here the key is trust, as the women must trust their "government leaders" and trust in one another. At the same time, this was more of a lighter story, focused mostly on the antics the women go through to figure out just what is going on around them and what the others are up to.
This story includes so many of the elements that I have come to know and love from the previous nine stories. The relationships between the women, both as lovers and friends, are all deep and loving. There is humor throughout as well, which is most definitely a trademark of this series overall. The most surprising part of this story is there were visual aids! And by paying close attention, readers just might be able to solve the mystery before the characters do.
This wonderful series is one best enjoyed from the very beginning and in the order the stories were written. These characters have gone through so much together, and their development from the first story to the tenth is quite extensive, especially when it comes to narrator Kate. Once you start you won't be able to stop reading, and will be anxious for the next installment. The series prior to "Likely Suspects" includes "Scavengers," "Ledge Walkers," "Savages," "Loose Sleuths," "Sisters," "Leakers Ignited," "Scraps," "L-Word C-Word," and "Spiders." All are exceptional stories that I highly recommend!
