Sweet Home, Alaska #3

Happily Ever Alaska

Rate this book
Lolly Crocker bakes up warm desserts in her chilly Alaskan town, but can she handle the reigniting of an old flame?

Whenever things get too serious, baker Lolly Crocker knows it’s time to break it off with a guy. Without fail, her gut would tell her that the man she was dating was not Mr. Right.

The one exception is Shaun Montana, her high school sweetheart. With Shaun, life felt complete; but her mother convinced her she was too young to be tied down, and Lolly broke up with him the night before she left for college.

While Lolly keeps every relationship light, Shaun is never less than fully committed—and still somehow his romances have all ended badly. When he comes back to Sweet Home, his attraction to Lolly is as fiery as ever, but he's determined to keep things casual for once...just when Lolly is finally ready to risk her heart on a second chance with the man she loved so long ago.

Award-winning author Patience Griffin has been writing and sewing her whole life but didn’t discover her love of quilting until her late thirties. She decided the best way to acquire her first quilt was to make one for herself. At nearly the same time, she started commuting three and half hours a day for her dream engineering job. To pass the time on the long drive, she got hooked on audiobooks—especially books with love stories.

Within a couple of years, she was writing stories of her own. It was no surprise to her family and friends when she combined her love of quilting, her small town roots, and her obsession with Scottish romances into novels.

She has gained some recognition with her September 11th Story Quilt which has toured the country as the property of the Pentagon. She has a master's degree in nuclear engineering but spends her days writing stories about hearth and home, and dreaming about the fictional small town of Gandiegow, Scotland.

I must be mellowing out in my old age--two romances in a row with no dead bodies. You should not judge a book by its cover, but this one was so cute it was hard not to. "Alaska" in the title, a cute dog and a quilt--an overwhelming snuggly invitation for a warm second-chance romance. The characters were likeable, with their misreadings of each other's emotions humorous. I loved the small town of Sweet Home, Alaska, and its warm, friendly, gossipy citizens.

I liked the story and the location. This book is the third in a series of books about the area and certain characters, so there were definitely gaps in what was described or otherwise referred to. (Note: at the back of the book there was an excerpt from the first book and it did explain some of the things in this story that weren't clear.)

While I enjoyed the book, I do think the story took a long time to launch. I became impatient at times. I kept reading, though, because I enjoyed journeying with the MC in the pursuit of her dreams. I will probably get the first two books from the library so I can spend more time in this small town in Alaska.

Happily Ever Alaska is a heartwarming small town second chance romance.

I liked this book, but I would have liked it more if I had read the previous books first. Happily Every Alaska is one of those rare romance series that you should read in order so that you can understand and enjoy the story and its characters. I definitely felt like a fish out of water for the first half of the book. A lot of characters and their side stories come at you hard and fast, and it felt overwhelming because I had no idea who these characters were. But besides that, the book itself is pretty solid for a love story. If you are a fan of small-town second-chance romances, then you will enjoy Lolly and Shaun’s story. This is a clean Christian romance, so if you don’t like books with a religious undertone, you should give this book a pass. I didn’t mind it. I enjoyed Lolly’s growing relationship with God; it fits well with her journey and character growth.

There are a lot of small-town antics going on in this book. Everyone has a strong opinion about everything, especially whether Shaun and Lolly should rekindle their romance. There was a lot of team Shaun and team Lolly happening, which was adorable at times. It was like being surrounded by a bunch of bossy older aunts who all think they know what’s best for you. I liked the small-town feel that was in this book. I also enjoyed the fact that Patience showed the downside of living in a small-town. The negative gossip that Lolly has to deal with because of her past relationship with Shaun is hard on her, and there are times when she feels unwelcome in town.

The romance between Lolly and Shaun swings between sweet and angsty. There are strong feelings between these two. Lolly regrets breaking up with Shaun all those years ago and knows she made the biggest mistake of her life. Shaun feels angry and hurt and doesn’t want anything to do with Lolly, which is hard because it’s a small-town, and he knows he is going to bump into her a lot. The interactions between these two go from one extreme to the other. Sometimes, you get those sweet moments when you think they are ready to start something new, and then you get those moments when they (mostly Shaun) lash out and push the other person away. They both have to work on rebuilding that trust and faith in one another before they can start a new relationship. I liked the romance. It did feel a bit too angsty at times for me, and Shaun’s mood swings gave me a whiplash, but the slow rekindling of their romance made it more believable and real. They really had to hash out their past grievances before starting something new.

Happily Ever Alaska is a great, clean romance with plenty of small-town drama.

Griffin takes readers back to her fictional small town of Sweet Home, Alaska for a second-chance romance that has the entire town taking sides. I enjoy Griffin's stories, her quirky side characters, sense of community, and depth of emotion. She gives her main couple a difficult path to happiness but with a satisfying emotional payoff in the end. I may shed tears on the journey but I'm always smiling when I turn the final page.

As with the earlier books in this series, there are multiple relationships at play in this book. In addition to the primary romance, a secondary couple whose relationship has slowly progressed through the first two books hits a potential bump in the road. Shaun's relationship with his mother is another focus, as is his mother's broken friendship with Lolly. Then there's the owner of the local general store who in addition to being the ringleader of the community quilting group also has her nose in pretty much everyone's relationships. I enjoyed seeing the personal growth of this particular character in this book.

As for Shaun and Lolly, they say you never forget your first love. That certainly holds true for this couple but considering how their teenage romance ended, forgiveness might be a stretch too far for Shaun. I appreciated the time the author gave them to rebuild their relationship once Shaun returned home. It felt realistic, especially with the push and pull between them. My heart was flipping back and forth right along with the two of them. There were endearing moments when I could feel the love between them pushing for the surface but then something would happen to cause doubt and there I was fretting again. It left me eagerly flipping pages right up until the end, wondering how it would all work out...or if it would. Spoiler alert: it's a romance, it works out, but you'll need to read the book to discover how. ;-)

If you enjoy second-chance romance, small-town Alaska settings, a strong sense of community, quirky characters, and emotionally satisfying happy endings, give this one a try. I also recommend the first two books in the series: One Snowy Night and Once Upon a Cabin.

Happily Ever Alaska by Patience Griffin is a sweet small town romance sure to keep you warm especially fi you’re curled up with a quilt & some baked goods. This is book #3 in the Sweet Home, Alaska series, but this is the first book I’ve read & can easily be read as a standalone.

High school sweethearts that unfortunately broke up back in the day are reunited when life has them both back in their home town.
Will they be able to live cordially with their meddling small town that never forgets &/or is it time to mend fences & see what else life has in store for these two?!

Happily Ever Alaska is great for fans of
🧵 Second Chance Romance
🧵 Small Town
🧵 Alaska

I appreciated the constant undertones regarding the importance of community. I enjoy reading about books set in interesting locations, especially places I’ve never been like Alaska. I also found it intriguing learning more about quilting & the quilt gifts, which I didn’t know much about.

If you’re looking for a sweet romance, Happily Ever Alaska is out now!

Thank you to NetGalley & Berkley Publishing for the gifted copy, which I voluntarily read & reviewed.

I’ve been looking forward to this book for several months, having pre-ordered it. It had some similarities to Ms. Griffin’s other series set in Scotland, with the quilting aspects. I liked the characters and the romance’s conclusion. Loved the small town descriptions and characters. Other than a remote setting, Alaska didn’t seem to play an important role in the story. Overall, an enjoyable read, and I give it 4 stars.

This is the third book in the Sweet Home, Alaska series. Loved them all, as well as the stories in her Kilts and Quilts series, which takes place in Scotland. Author Patience Griffin is a serious quilter and quilting is a part of the stories, but I am not good at sewing and love her work! I was smiling all the way through reading this book and it was hard to put it down! Love her stories and her slightly quirky residents in both series.

Another good story

I am in love with this book. She brought in both baking and quilting , two of my biggest pkeasures, and made them Lilly's as well. Shaun and Lolly had been in love as teenagers but her decide to break up wasn't a good idea. They found their way back together again.

The first book I've read in this series. It was tooth-achingly sweet. The emphasis on gender roles was a bit much for my taste. But, I went into it expecting that, as it is an inspirational romance. Was pleasantly surprised with the random acknowledgements of God that there was a tarot card reader.

HAPPILY EVER ALASKA, Sweet Home, Alaska Book 3
Patience Griffin
Romance

When Lolly’s high school sweetheart moves back to the small town they now both call home, will she cut and run as usual or will she stick it out and live out her hopes and plans?

This was a cute but predictable book with some spice, humor and romantic gestures. With a nosy mom in the background and a lot of town gossip, there is something for everyone to love. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
