It’s a hot, sunny afternoon on the mountain top, and the sisters are enjoying sitting around the pool chatting and laughing, frosty glasses of lemonade to keep them cool and relaxed. It’s a welcome hiatus after their last harrowing mission, and the only cloud over the happy occasion is that Charles, their mentor, is still mysteriously absent.
But amid the friendly bickering about who’s going to make dinner and what that might be, the Ladies of Pinewood receive some dreadful news: Harry Wong—Yoko’s true love and a staunch supporter of the Sisterhood—has become the victim of a ruthless identity theft ring. Harry’s bank accounts have been closed out, his beloved dojo is being foreclosed, and he’s being evicted. Distraught, Yoko is about to rush down the mountain to Harry’s aid when the Sisters intercept her. A situation like Harry’s requires finesse, careful planning, and the Sisterhood’s distinctive brand of vigilante justice.…
Fern Michaels isn’t a person. I’m not sure she’s an entity either since an entity is something with separate existence. Fern Michaels® is what I DO. Me, Mary Ruth Kuczkir. Growing up in Hastings, Pennsylvania, I was called Ruth. I became Mary when I entered the business world where first names were the order of the day. To this day, family and friends call me Dink, a name my father gave me when I was born because according to him I was ‘a dinky little thing’ weighing in at four and a half pounds. However, I answer to Fern since people are more comfortable with a name they can pronounce.
As they say, the past is prologue. I grew up, got a job, got married, had five kids. When my youngest went off to Kindergarten, my husband told me to get off my ass and get a job. Those were his exact words. I didn’t know how to do anything except be a wife and mother. I was also a voracious reader having cut my teeth on The Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Cherry Ames and the like. The library was a magical place for me. It still is to this day. Rather than face the outside world with no skills, I decided to write a book. For some reason that didn’t intimidate me. As my husband said at the time, stupid is as stupid does. Guess what, I don’t have that husband any more. Guess what else! I wrote 99 books, most of them New York Times Best Sellers.
Moving right along here . . . Several years ago I left Ballantine Books, parted company with my agent, sold my house in New Jersey that I had lived in all my married life and in 1993 moved to South Carolina. I figured if I was going to go through trauma let it be all at one time. It was a breeze. The kids were all on their own at that point. The dump was a 300 year old plantation house that is listed in the National Registry that I remodeled. Today it is beyond belief as are the gardens and the equally old Angel Oaks that drip Spanish moss. Unfortunately, I could not get my ghost to relocate. This ghost has been documented by previous owners. Mary Margaret as we call her, is “a friendly”. She is also mischievous. It took me two weeks to figure out that she didn’t like my coffee cups. They would slide off the table or counter or else they’d break in the dishwasher. I bought red checkered ones. All are intact as of this writing. She moves pillows from one room to the other and she stops all the clocks in the house at 9:10 in the a.m. at least once a week. When the Azaleas are in bloom, and only then, I find blooms on my night stand. I have this glorious front porch and during the warm months I see my swing moving early in the morning when the air is still and again late in the day. She doesn’t spook the dogs. I always know when she’s around because the five of them line up and look like they’re at a tennis match. As of this writing we’re co-habiting nicely.
Most writers love what they do and I’m no exception. I love it when I get a germ of an idea and get it down on paper. I love breathing life into my characters. I love writing about women who persevere and prevail because that’s what I had to do to get to this point in time. It’s another way of saying it doesn’t matter where you’ve been, what matters is where you’re going and how you get there. The day I finally prevailed was the day I was inducted into the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame. For me it was an awesome day and there are no words to describe it. I’ve been telling stories and scribbling for 37 years. I hope I can continue for another 37 years. It wasn’t easy during some of those years. As I said, I had to persevere. My old Polish grandmother said something to me when I was little that I never forgot. She said when God is good to you, you have to give back. For a while I didn’t know how to do that. When I finally figured it out I set up The Fern Michaels® Foundation.
Ms. Michaels has a series of books featuring the "Sisterhood." There have been about 15 novels so far. This is one of them and it brings me to a point I would like to make to writers of series books. Chapter 1 introduces 16, count 'em, 16 characters by name. This was done in the first 3 pages. I was bombarded by these people; knew nothing about them at all. There was really no point in the book where all the relationships were explained, nothing about how all these people got together as vigilantes, etc. It was very frustrating. In this novel one of their number has had his identity stolen. Calling on their resources (hackers, newspaper editors, et al) the 16 people attempt to identify the criminals and reinstate their friend's good name and credit rating. In the process they discover an extensive ring that has stolen the identities of thousands of people. I wasn't very impressed with the story. I thought there was still a good bit to go (based on remaining pages) when all of a sudden the story was over. The remaining pages - and there were many of them - was an introduction to Michaels' next book. I can't recommend this book.
The sisters are on the job! Someone took Harry's identity and all his money. Look out here comes the Sisterhood!! I love Fern Michaels's books. It's like she can look into a human's heart. In Vanishing Act the ladies break up an identity theft ring and get Harry back on the right path. Once again proving that women might not be the weaker sex.
3.00 rating. I didn't realize this was a series and got lost by the sisterhood, made it to the end without understanding much about them. Now that I understand the sisterhood (kind of) I may read more of the series.
Once again, the women are on the move! These books are a delight to read and I feel as if I know the characters and they're friends (the good characters). Can't wait to start the next in the Series!
Another in the sisterhood series. Same formula, etc. Nothing new..... Once again I am left to ask where this is all going, and when is it going to finally wrap up. Enough is enough!
I keep reading because she keeps writing them but the series lost it appeal after the first 7 books. I can read them in a day so that is why I guess I keep reading but really not worth it. :)
Harry Wong, one of the Sisterhood gents and the number 2 martial arts expert in the world, has had his identity stolen, and whoever stole it racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in Harry's name, and he's lost his dojo - his main source of income. Harry is at a complete loss and unsure how to address this injustice, so Jack Emery takes control. The first phone call he makes? To the vigilantes, of course. What comes to light is that Harry is only one of many who have fallen prey to a massive identity theft ring, so not only are the ladies looking to give Harry justice, but they are also looking to restore the finances and reputations of many people... sisterhood style, of course.
Michaels is doing variations of the same punishment, so that's getting tiring. It's like books that have massive numbers of sex scenes. There are only so many ways to describe the acts of foreplay and coitus. Same with vengeance acts, there's - apparently - only so much you can think up, and then you just try to come up with variations on those methods. Aaaaand yet, I'm still reading them. *shrug*
With Charles still missing, the girls were gathering on the mountain . Lizzie who had married Cosmo Cricket in Las Vegas, came to the mountain where the girls regaled her with a fabulous reception and party. During the festivities , Nikki got a call from Jack Emery telling her that Harry Wong's ID had been stolen, his money taken, and his dojo in foreclosure and he was evicted. Yoko wanted to go to him immediately; but was stopped since she would be arrested is she was caught . They needed to plan. The first thing was Lizzie's getting back to town and luckily was able to get Harry straightened out. However, was it only Harry? They began to investigate and find the thiefs. What they uncovered was amazing.
I have been reading this book since the start of the year but I can’t seem to finish it and now I did. I couldn’t understand a thing from reading the first few pages because there are LOTS of characters lol I can’t keep up. Now that I’m reading some of the comments here, I now realized that this is part of a series. Wish the author could’ve provided a bit of context for each characters and not just jump right in so that someone can read it as a stand alone without reading the first few books of the series😔😔😔
Great Way to Ensure Justice This book is the 15th in a series centered around a group of high-powered women vigilantes and their helpers. In this episode, the group sets their sights on a ring of identity thieves. The vigilantes create a great operation that would put any Mission: Impossible to shame. This is a clean story with no foul language, violence, gore, or bedroom scenes. I have read this series from the beginning and am not sick of it yet!
My mother let me borrow this. There are far too many characters in this book that I started questioning who was who. It also seems like there's a whole lot I was missing just from the getgo. It's like part of some long ass series that just keeps going. I am so glad to finally be done with this.
After two books, Charles returns. The girls take on identity thieves and barely make it out in time. Always a book that you need to keep reading to know what happens next. This series would be great on a streaming service.
Very intriguing addition to Fern Michaels's 'Sisterhood series'.The young women combined to save one of their compatriot. One of their helpers has had his identity stolen, leading the sisters to activate their unique capabilities to aid Harry, but many others as well.
I wish there was a real life sisterhood In the United States !
Fern Michaels did it again She weaves such an excellent story and plot That it stands far and above the last book she wrote. When you think she can't do it again she does and so does the sisterhood !
I really enjoy Fern Michaels books and writing. Vanishing act is the 15 th in this series that I hug ave read good clean fun books. Relaxing and enjoyable to read.
Fifteenth in the Sisterhood vengeance-suspense series revolving around a group of lady vigilantes seeking justice for those who fall outside the normal legal parameters.
My Take I know! Who knew I'd ever give this series a "4". The topic certainly doesn't hurt. The writing is still juvenile but either the immature bits have been reduced or I'm just so happy about Charles' professionalism. The whole Keystone Kops routine was o-l-d. Charles and his merry men would do a much more efficient job just not as colorfully or dangerously as the ladies.
You'd think that with their intelligence, identity thieves could find a better way to get rich than in destroying innocent peoples' lives.
Ooh, I love the dinner that Lizzie makes for Maggie, Jack, and Harry. A nice blend of homemade and storebought! I gotta try it.
The Story Harry wakes up one morning to discover that he owes almost half a million dollars, has beaucoup credit cards maxed out, and the bank is foreclosing on his dojo for nonpayment of two mortgages he never took out. He reckons the only reason he still has his Ducati is because the bank doesn't know about it.
Jack insists on informing the Sisterhood and the ladies swing into action calling on help from Lizzie and Cosmo. Look out, bankers, when Lizzie swishes into the bank president's office, he is very well aware that he is on thin ice. Especially when Lizzie informs him that the Washington Post is just standing by to hear his decision. Bad PR or take a financial hit. Hmmm… Cosmo is also asking some questions in Vegas and what he turns up raises yet more queries.
That sorts Harry out, but the underlying tragedy of the numerous other victims and a whole new demographic that no one had anticipated causes the vigilantes to pursue them with vigor. Sigh...really makes you wish this could happen in real life!
The Characters The original Sisterhood is composed of women who mete out justice to those who believe themselves outside the law: Myra Rutledge, Annie de Silva, Yoko Akio, Alexis Thorne, Isabelle, Kathryn Lucas, and Nikki.
The backup Sisterhood team is composed of Lizzie Fox Cricket, the best lawyer in D.C. who has recently married Cosmo Cricket, the lawyer for the Nevada Gaming Commission; Jack Emery is the assistant DA in D.C. and Nikki's fiancé. Harry Wong is a martial arts expert and engaged to Yoko. FBI Director Bert Navarro is with Kathryn. Maggie Spritzer is the Editor in Chief at the Washington Post and she's with Ted Robinson, one of the Post's reporters who has come round to the ladies' side. Joe Espinosa is another one of the Post's reporters and he's hooked up with Alexis.
Charles Martin is a retired MI6 operative who fell in love with Myra but answered a call from the Queen of England leaving Myra and the Sisterhood behind. He's returned to the mountain and the girls are deciding if he even gets to come back. He's rather nervous because the ladies have survived without him. Personally, I think it's due to Avery Snowden, Charles' go-to guy, whom the ladies have been calling for help.
President Martine Connor was helped by the Sisterhood and owes them a pardon. For the past two years. She's asked Lizzie to accept the post of Chief White House Counsel and Lizzie intends to push that pardon through.
Miss Brickman, a.k.a., Angela Bookman, a.k.a., a whole lotta other people and her partner in crime, Mr. Carson, a.k.a., Derek Bookman, a.k.a., a similar number of aliases are the perpetrators in charge of this particular ring of thieves.
The Cover The cover is gorgeous with its grayed-turquoise background and a two-story stone mansarded house perched on the edge of a lake surrounded by forest. It has absolutely no relation to the story. As per usual.
The title is interesting. My take is that it refers to the Vanishing Act the identity thieves perform when they make their victims' money vanish out of their accounts.
The Sisterhood became upset when they had found out that there was a ring of cons who had stolen identities and captured all of their credit and financial worth. Some of these identities were of children in foster care. Harry Wong, one of their own, also had his identity stolen and was financially robbed of all savings, assets, and credit. Others were elderly and vulnerable. Charles finally returns from England from his own mission. The Sisterhood gets upset that he had left and they needed to care for themselves and plan their own secret missions. For-the most part, the women were able to complete the mission without much help from Charles. As usual, all of the men were depicted as baboons. The Sisterhood solved the case. The pair of cons was arrested. Charles surprised them all with an island paradise.
Interesting story of the Sisterhood series..... I have not read all of the series but was able to understand the characters - fun reading with some "filler" -
I read this book on the recommendation of my sister who has read the entire series. This book is number 15 in the Sisterhood Series.
Summery: It wasn't that hard to catch on to what was going on. Here's what I figured out: There is a group of women, known as the Sisterhood, who have done something so bad that they have to hide out at a mountainside retreat. Only a pardon from the president will allow them to be free. Money does not seem to be a problem. There are also a group of people in normal society who are strong supporters. This includes high level people and some sexy men.
From time to time the Sisters become involved in a mission helping people who have suffered at the hands of others. The Sisters put things right and seek revenge.
In Vanishing Act the Sisters become involved when one of their outside partners is completely wiped out due to identity theft. They learn the masterminds of this identity theft ring is a very clever couple who change names and disguises on a daily basis. The goal of the Sisters is to figure out who else has been robbed, determine the best way to capture the couple and how to get the money back to the victims.
My evaluation: It was easy and fun to get caught up in this story. I read it off and on at the dentist's but then had to keep turning the pages until I knew what was going to happen next. While it was fun to read I had to keep telling my "inner-scoffer" to go away. This is similar to reading a "super-hero" story. Things that happen in the story could in no way happen in real life. If you like your thrillers to be completely possible, this series is not for you.
