Attagari Kathalu (Stories of Mother-in-law) by multi-talented Dr. Bhanumati Ramakrishna, apart from her unparalleled stature in the movie industry, also made her mark as a writer of fiction, writer of humor with the creation of the mother-in-law character which is soo hilarious and unique. These collection of short stories won her the Andhra Pradesh Sahitya Academy award in 1966. Bhanumati has written a few stories of serious nature also, but it is her mother-in-law character that has become the hallmark of her writing.

These mother-in-law stories reflect her belief in tradition and family values. Her stories brim with her belief in god, astrology, and family values, drawing humor primarily from situations and the human ideosyncrasies; and, she never missed a chance to take a jab at our customs and beliefs. That is not however to be interpreted as disrespect for tradition.

Paluvayi Bhanumathi Ramakrishna (Telugu: భానుమతీ రామకృష్ణ) was a multilingual Indian film actress, director, music director, singer, producer, book writer and songs writer. Most of her works are in Telugu and Tamil languages. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2003 for her contribution towards Indian cinema. She was honored among "women in cinema" at the 30th International Film Festival of India.

She received Government National Award for Best Writer for the book నాలో నేను [Nalo Nenu] , an autobiography in 1994

Enjoyed reading the book. this is a collection of short stories of a mother in law narrated by her daughter in law. the mild humor through out the book interests the reader..the humor is mostly based on innocence of the lead character and her inability to understand the next generation's lifestyle

some terms used as part of dialogues were used by us during childhood by our elders and some incidents in the stories will bring back those sweet memories.

the mother in law character is not the stereotype-suryakantham type mother in law but still some scenes remind the legendary actress..this character will be remembered for ever by Telugu literature lovers. the book also won the prestigious sahithya academy award.

a must read book for all telugu literature lovers.

తెలుగు సాంస్కృతిక వాతావరణాన్ని ఈ పుస్తకంలో భానుమతిగారు చాలా బాగా ఇమిడ్చారు. కొన్ని విషయాలు కాస్త పాత కాలంలో లాగా ఉన్నా, ఈ పుస్తకం ఆధునిక తెలుగు ఇంటిని, కుటుంబాన్ని ఇప్పటికీ చక్కాగా ప్రతిబింబిస్తుంది. పదక్రమం వార్తల్లా కాకుండా వాడుక భాషలాగా ఉండటం వల్లనూ, అత్తగారు-కోడళ్ల పాత్రధారణ వల్లనూ, ఈ కధలు మన ఇంట్లో కుడా జరుగగలవు అని అనిపిస్తుంది.

A very funny book and very well written! I heard few of these stories from my mother as a kid have always wanted to read it. It depicts the orthodox Telugu Brahmin lifestyle of the 50s and 60s very well, the comedy is subtle and all the stories and very engaging.

చాలా బాగుంది. భానుమతి గారు నటి గానే కాకుండా రచయిత్రిగా ఎంత ఘనులో ఈ పుస్తకం చదివితే అర్థం అవుతుంది.
పుస్తకం చివరలో మాత్రం కొన్ని కథల్లో అసలు అత్తగారే లేకపోవడం ఆశ్చర్యం కలిగించింది :-)

Wonderful stories .. not able to assume real incidents or not but.. the humour in it is really appreciated! great work .. should not feel like targeting mother in laws.. but all part of family!
