Readers, in the role of stellar scout, find that Utopia, known as the "perfect planet" because of its natural beauty and peace among its inhabitants, is being threatened by an evil tyrant.
Edward Packard attended and graduated from both Princeton University and Columbia Law School. He was one of the first authors to explore the idea of gamebooks, in which the reader is inserted as the main character and makes choices about the direction the story will go at designated places in the text.
The first such book that Edward Packard wrote in the Choose Your Own Adventure series was titled "Sugarcane Island", but it was not actually published as the first entry in the Choose Your Own Adventure Series. In 1979, the first book to be released in the series was "The Cave of Time", a fantasy time-travel story that remained in print for many years. Eventually, one hundred eighty-four Choose Your Own Adventure books would be published before production on new entries to the series ceased in 1998. Edward Packard was the author of many of these books, though a substantial number of other authors were included as well.
In 2005, Choose Your Own Adventure books once again began to be published, but none of Edward Packard's titles have yet been included among the newly-released books.
Amazing how it’s like you are on a completely different planet with its own bio system and it’s so descriptive. There were a lot of good endings so I wish it was a little harder but I loved it. A lot of adventure and it’s so cool. It kind of reminds me of Avatar but wayyy before Avatar. A “peaceful” planet with humanoids and many creatures. Highly recommend, I love the space and multidimensional CYOA.
I love these books. I picked this one up because the cover looked sweet. This one wasn’t as fun. Some good story lines, others were blah. Aliens aren’t that cool.
An interesting sci-fi adventure gamebook which also reflects on the question of whether there can be such a thing as a perfect planet, complete with a cameo from Packard's favorite recurring character, Dr. Nera Vivaldi (having read most of Packard's Choose Your Own Adventure books, I have given up on trying to make sense of how Dr. Vivaldi can show up in all of the books she appears, especially as some are set in the present and others are set in the distant future).
My wife pulled this out of some of my childhood things. Not only did I get to share with my boys, but I took another trip or two through myself. Nothing like Choose Your Own Adventure.
