How to Be a Genius or The Science of Being Great

Rate this book
Originally published in 1911, How to Be a Genius appeals to people who feel that they are not making the most of their lives. We all want to stand out and be in control. Wattles explains to his readers how to live aggressively and with purpose, making themselves forces that move in the world rather than reactive leaves, blown about by life's circumstances. He championed the law of attraction, which proposed that a person's thoughts became reality-commonly referred to now as the power of positive thinking. American author WALLACE DELOIS WATTLES (1860-1911) overcame poverty and failure in his life to become a pioneer of the early self-help movement. Among his books are The Science of Getting Rich and The Science of Being Well.

Wallace Delois Wattles was an American author. A New Thought writer, he remains personally somewhat obscure, but his writing has been widely quoted and remains in print in the New Thought and self-help movements. Wattles' best known work is a 1910 book called The Science of Getting Rich in which he explained how to become wealthy.

He studied the writings of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Ralph Waldo Emerson and recommended the study of their books to his readers who wished to understand what he characterized as "the monistic theory of the cosmos".

Through his personal study and experimentation Wattles claimed to have discovered the truth of New Thought principles and put them into practice in his own life. He wrote books outlining these principles and practices, giving them titles that described their content, such as Health Through New Thought and Fasting and The Science of Being Great. His daughter Florence recalled that "he lived every page" of his books.

A practical author, Wattles encouraged his readers to test his theories on themselves rather than take his word as an authority, and he claimed to have tested his methods on himself and others before publishing them.

Wattles practiced the technique of creative visualization. In his daughter Florence's words, he "formed a mental picture" or visual image, and then "worked toward the realization of this vision".

Rhonda Byrne told a Newsweek interviewer that her inspiration for creating the 2006 hit film The Secret and the subsequent book by the same name, was her exposure to Wattles's The Science of Getting Rich. Byrne's daughter, Hayley, had given her mother a copy of the Wattles book to help her recover from her breakdown.

In the latest installment of "Heidi re-listens to all the old audiobooks on her hard drive", I gave The Science of Being Great another chance to share its wisdom with me.

Couched in religious language, Wallace Wattles shares his new age viewpoint long before modern audiences became enamored of it with the mammoth success of The Secret. In fact, that's how the publisher marketed this older manuscript, as source material for The Secret.

I suppose it could be considered "source material" in that Wattles teaches enlightenment is to be found within. But he has very little in it about the guiding power of emotions, which was a cornerstone of The Secret. Wattles book is more along the lines of: You are a god walking among gods and should act accordingly. And don't stick your nose into other people's business.

Some of his advice is more tricky, such as: see the world in a perfect state of becoming. Nothing has gone wrong or could go wrong. Everyone and everything is perfect for where they are and everything has the chance to get better.

That's hard stuff to swallow if you take a second to think about it. "The world is in a perfect state of becoming." Maybe I've become too accustomed to looking for problems rather than relying on faith that everything is working out how its supposed to.

Other parts of this book sounded similar to more modern new age authors with these ideas: Books and people will be drawn to you when you need them. Go where your inner feelings tell you to go. As you think, so you will become. Thoughts are things, etc.

By comparing and contrasting this book with other authors, I'm not intending to denigrate those teachings. I wouldn't want to dismiss the power of the mind and emotions. Using just those things, people can certainly change their lives.

It's just that the way they are packaged in The Science of Being Great may make it difficult for some readers to absorb it. Take the word "God" for example or "the Father". Wattles throws those two around in every other sentence or so. That could be problematic for people who have struggled with religion or have involving it. Or those who don't believe religion and science can mix.

And the whole book takes itself so seriously. Even the title "The Science of Being Great", reminds me of an encyclopedia entry or something. I've had the most success in my own personal life when I've lightened up and stopped making such a big deal out of things.

In conclusion, is there helpful information in this book? Yes. Would I recommend taking the time to go through it to find those gems? It depends on how you learn best, I guess. Personally, I'd recommend Esther Hicks if you want the same sort of new age teachings with less religious trappings and a bigger dose of fun.

All but science :))

This book focuses intensely on leaving ourselves to god and absorb the mind of the lord ... :|
I couldn't relate almost any of the stuff to science.

There were a couple of nice insights, though, for example, the author argues that everything and everyone we see, are in their perfect state, striving for getting better and better, and that's how the universe has been working. For instance, he says that we cannot say locomotives fueled with coal are bad, no, they were great in their time and laid the foundation of modern transportation. Hence, people we encounter, no matter how bad their manner might be, they are perfect and are on their way to sophistication. I really liked this argument.

I agree with some but quite unconvinced with some... Its a good book but sometimes it's not all about ratings. Sometimes boredom comes to account and the way you perceived things quite sometimes what other says "not right". But I may consider rereading this one to give a second glance...

Stay safe everyone 😊

Toward the beginning it's very... philo, so you really have to focusfocus when you read, but then it gets more easily digestible and freaking AMAZINGLY inspiring. This book is going to be my constant companion. If everyone read this book, and practiced this book, there would be world peace. I'm just saying.

One of the most amazing books I've read!

This book was written over 100 years ago and became an inspiration for many of the current world-famous coaches and transformational gurus like Tony Robbins, Napoleon Hill, the creator of "The Secret" movie and many others.

The author gives examples of people who managed to become more than their circumstances and transform not only themselves, but also the communities in which they lived.
The book is full of wisdom. It is concise and summarizes everything in an eloquent manner, bringing your mind and spirit to a great level of being.

This is the third time I have been listening to this book, and I think that I will return to this wisdom more than once. Highly recommend.

An old classic self-development book enhancing being great despite of your wealth and/or your physical abilities.

The writer relates greatness to God and his attributes, which, in some sense, is correct. Kindly watch this video to understand my point of view. In this video, Jeffrey Lang, a mathematician, shows how he answered one of the most controversial questions, and how he relates it to Allah's attributes.

Jeffrey Lang Video

Although the writer's objective seems thoughtful and quite appealing. Nevertheless, he stumbles to relate, in an action of a sudden, to the mother nature! And in another few sentences, he quotes a few gospels of Jesus (as he pretend them to be Jesus words). Furthermore, he says that if you became acknowledged by God's attributes, you will certainly be a God between Gods! So now I got a lot of confusion. What is actually the writer's view point. Is it mother nature, Jesus, me (as I am a God now according to his writings) or God?

The point is that some writers try their best to show off how they can talk in such matters that seem to make them of a high status of knowledge. However, they always prove that they hold neither logic nor a sense of reason.

Watch Lang's video if you would like to here real reasoning and mind-blowing logic

As I traveled thru the beautiful Oregon country this week I enjoyed this audio CD from the library.

I was able to take many things from this book and hope to apply them in my own life.

The two most important:

1. The world is a perfect place.

2. ALL people are good with different struggles.

Great book!

Ok. It's official. I love Wallace D. Wattles. He is now on my list of dead people I would like to come back and have over for dinner. "You are to become a creator, not a competitor; you are going to get what you want, but in such a way that when you get it every other man will have more than he has now." "You have no right to use your willpower upon another person, even for his own good, for you do not know what is for his good." How can you not like a guy that says the very best thing you can do for the whole world is to make the most of yourself?

I liked this book and i was blessed to read it beginning of 2021. sad that it was audible but definetly would read it again as it have alot of great thoughts to reflect on.

irony it was written 50 plus years ago but lessons can still be applied today!

Takeaways:

1. the writer encourages you to think more and read less.
2.Start being great now in your home with the family with your friends dont wait for things to happen to be great , dont wait for promotions to be great dont wait for something in return to be great , be great now.
3. Everyone is perfect at their state , everything happens is at its perfect time.
4. Some people are perfect the way they are but you dont fit them

A book is supposed to be scientific. Well, it's not. The author suggests that everyone is same and all human beings have the same potential. Guess what ?! We don't. The writer tells us that we can be same and we have to develop our potential so we all can be Einsteins. I suppose he has not heard about personality and individuality. And also IQ.

Fundamentally flawed, but contains plenty of motivational observations and incidental truths that almost kind of make it work, in the end. Wattles is a few sharp corners away from profound understanding of the world, but—almost more often than not in this outing—has the right sort of ideas, at least vaguely, this time around.

This book was written almost 100 years ago, but it still inspires today. Wattles notes that, "When awakened, man becomes a son of the Highest and all power is given to him in heaven and on earth." He notes you can become what you want to be by virtue of your thoughts.

He also explains that wisdom is the essential basis of greatness and that man can receive wisdom from God. He includes an entire chapter on a mental exercise that helps you to connect with God and thus realize your highest potential.

One concept I particularly liked is he says that to become "great," you must start by doing small things in great ways. So he says to begin today to be great in your own home and office...in all relations, be just, generous, courteous and kind. When you begin to do even small things in a great way, you will eventually be able to do bigger things in a great way. Your habit of deliberately thinking and acting in the best way you know how will cause you to continually grow until you become a great person.

This is a very quick read, but a very inspiring one. I would recommend it to anyone who aspires to be a better person.

This is the second installment of what was supposed to be a three-book series by Wallace D. Wattles, and the writing style is likened to The Science of Getting Rich. This is a great self-help book that further taps into the metaphysical aspects of having a great life. It discusses, among other aspects of being great, the importance of consecration, identification, and idealization. I took a lot of good pointers from this and Wattles' previous book that is sure to help in making improvements to myself, demeanor, and outlook.

The books starts with "Any Person May Become Great," and there lies your theme.
Running the show, it seems that we are focusing on the Law of Attraction. That is at first glance. The title becomes more complex when you figure that Wallace D. Wattles brings God into the role and compares all men to that God and having a God within each and everyone of us. Subscribing to this does NOT fit my background or upbringing, but neither am I offended by it. I love learning new things. I know that in learning something new there will be material that just doesn't fit me, especially in the realm of self-development, which I will now set this book under.
Self-development is just that--of the self. This book, if anything, focuses more on that matter than anything else. Forgiving the topic of God is something I can do if there is great information for the man who is agnostic. That information is there. Even better it is not hidden from the reader in glamorous writing. It's simple to understand.
If you cannot sit there and understand that progress is the way of man, then there is something the matter with the reader not the writer. To be stagnant is not human. You MUST keep growing and moving forward. That is what life is. That is something that you control. This book leads you to believe in that, but it is up to you to make it something worth believing, right?
That is where the power of thinking comes in. Wallace D. Wattles says that reading and doing things without thinking will lead to nothing. So if there is something to do, it is to THINK. Sit down and think. If you want to change your life, grab a notepad, sit, and THINK.
This practice of sitting and thinking deliberately is called ACTION. To be great you must ACT; you cannot simply think. You MUST also think in the now. The NOW is of import. He says, "Do not merely think that you are going to become great; think that you are great now. Do not think that you will begin to act in the a great way at some future time; begin now."
BEGIN NOW!
Also, learn of patience. He says of this, "Do not be in a hurry to get to the great things. Doing great things will not make you great, but becoming great will certainly lead you to the doing of great things. Begin to be great where you are and in the things you do every day."
Don't be in a hurry to become great. It will take time and courage. It will take failure and times of just giving up. That is part of becoming great and growing. Being leveled off will leave you content, but what does that do? Nothing. There is nothing there, just growing old skin with lost hopes.
Take action now and move that body to make something of itself.
I recommend this book.

i read it as an audio book, it ended up being quite good, soo good at many parts which i relate to, though couldnt relate when it comes to theological beliefs ..

The struggle for power over others is the battle of the competitive world, and you must rise above that world and its motives and aspirations and seek only for life. Cast out envy; you can have all that you want, and you need not envy any man what he has. Above all things see to it that you do not hold malice or enmity toward any one; to do so cuts you off from the mind whose treasures you seek to make your own. "He that loves not his brother, loves not God."

Ask no honors and seek for no recognition, honors and recognition will come fast enough if you are entitled to them.
Great people never seek for recognition or applause; they are not great because they want to be paid for being so. Greatness is reward enough for itself; the joy of being something and of knowing that you are advancing is the greatest of all joys possible to man.

Do not be disturbed if others seem to be going wrong, and feel that you must step in and set them right. Remember that every person is perfect on his own plane; you cannot improve on the work of God. Do not meddle with the personal habits and practices of others, though they are your nearest and dearest; these things are none of your business. Nothing can be wrong but your own personal attitude; make that right and you will know that all else is right. You are a truly great soul when you can live with those who do things that you do not do, and yet refrain from either criticism or interference.

Do not think that you will begin to act in a great way when you begin to deal with great things; begin to deal in a great way with small things. Do not think that you will begin to be great when you get among more intelligent people, or among people who understand you better; begin now to deal in a great way with the people around you.

if during all the balance of the day, while you are about your regular vocation, you think of yourself as not great. No amount of praying or affirmation will make you great if you still habitually regard yourself as being small. [...] Get a new mental picture of yourself. Do not try to become great by repeating mere strings of words or superficial formulas; but repeat over and over the
THOUGHT of your own power and ability until you classify external facts, and decide your place everywhere by this idea.

Great book. A bit old-fashioned but I love the simplicity of the ideas. There are some great explanations, quotes, guides, and examples from history for how to align your thinking to produce greatness in yourself. It's only a 2 or 3 hour listen on YouTube and I'm listening a second time now. It's definitely one I am & will keep coming back to.

I see a few comments on the lack of "science" in the book because Wattles frequently mentions God and there aren't many "studies" that I can recall. Do not get hung up on this, or compare to a modern-day scientific work. That isn't what it is, nor is it fair to Wattles who wrote it 100+ years ago.

For example, when I think about moments in my life where I and others thought of me as "great," it was because of something seemingly inexplicable. Like a combination of preparation and an innate quality that is more creative than logical (science). I don't blame these critics because that quality is quite difficult to pinpoint or verify.

I love the topic of improving character, so I'm definitely biased, but I love simple books that get to the heart of the matter, and this is that book. Thank you Mr. Wattles and RIP.

Wattles weaves succinctly and quite masterfully through many important aspects of living well: Having a unified positive mental outlook, building and living a stern and cohesive concept of self, knowing the difference between balanced helpfulness and harmful 'altruism' and leading a life of example. I also appreciated his balanced and positive approach to religion and metaphysics. His writings regarding religion are specific to Christianity, however the applications he derives from his religion can for the most part be extended to all religious philosophies. I found I was able to relate and derive helpful insight from his religious writings by approaching them a more general/metaphysical filter. Overall, the reminders one gets from this short book can be very beneficial.

Can’t understand the ratings people are giving this trash above 1 star. Emperor’s new clothes ?

Let’s me summarize the best of this and the only true part, if he had the guts to tell it like it really is: Your thinking and focus is important and can affect what you’re able to do in life in negative and positive ways.

What he says instead “ Thoughts and power will end in a life of power…You are god if you think like a god. If you think like a God you can not fail to act like a god. “

Hilarious overblown trash.

Honestly, I don’t why I make myself read and sometimes Re read books like this - mostly because it’s popular enough to study, but I’d also love to k spend more time critically taking this all down point by point.
