A delightful small town cozy comfort read. Christie Barlow is brilliant when it comes to developing lovable quirky characters and sweet feel good storylines. This is the third book in the Love Heart Lane series, and while it can be read as a standalone it was so nice revisiting characters from the previous books. Rory and Allie have just been gifted Clover Cottage by Rory’s parents. Allie is super excited, she sees this as an opportunity for them to start their life together. And even though the cottage is in need of a lot of work she is up for the challenge. Rory is not quite as excited. He sees the cottage as a lot of work and he isn’t certain he’s quite ready to settle down, he still has some dreams to realize. A big star shows up in town filming a documentary about small-town living and Rory gets a taste of stardom now he is even more conflicted. Allie doesn’t know what to think she has always thought they would live happily ever after in Heartcross. When Rory is offered an opportunity to travel to Africa for 12 months and film a documentary, Allie is fearful she will lose him forever. What follows is a lovely sometimes frustrating story of will they? won’t they? As Rory and Allie try to figure out how to bring their separate dreams together.
I was first introduced to this couple in previous books and I thought that made this story even more enjoyable. It’s always refreshing reading a story about an established couple trying to navigate their relationship, rather than new love. At first I really felt as though Rory was being very selfish, but as the story unfolds I began to see where he was coming from, right along with Allie. This story however is not just about this couple it’s about family, friends, and community. There was a touching and heartbreaking side story involving Rory’s Parents. Also Mop the alpaca makes an appearance in a dog show posing as a pacapoo. Loved every minute I spent in this small Scottish town and cannot wait to come back again in the next book.

*** Big thank you to One More Chapter for my gifted copy of this book. All opinions are my own. ***
‘Check my teeth,’ she said, slightly panicking. Rory’s eyebrows shot up as Allie clenched her teeth together and prised her lips open wide in some sort of weird twisty grimace. ‘What are you doing, you absolute loon? You look like some sort of constipated chimpanzee,’ said Rory, his eyes drawn towards Allie’s mouth. ‘Not that in the whole of my career have I ever had the pleasure of treating any constipated chimpanzees.’
‘A reality show –like the Kardashians?’ asked Isla, sitting up, knowing that brain-numbing TV was a must at her time of life. ‘More like the Karcrashions…’
My Review:
I’m was a bit slow on the uptake but I’ve caught on to the fact that Christie Barlow excels in writing about appreciably flawed yet well-meaning couples in flux, or amid critical transitions, and/or brain-slapping wake-up calls. And with this in mind, Clover Cottage was definitely on-trend.
Throughout most of the story, the main character of Allie was rigidly in her mindset of establishing a home and family and forever living in her small little village with her boyfriend Rory without ever venturing far from their little hamlet’s boundaries. Whereas, Rory had other long-held dreams and aspirations as well as a significant case wanderlust. While it wasn’t tense conflict, their differences were rising to the surface and placing them at odds with each other, in addition to other real-world issues and emotional peaks and valleys intruding on their energies.
I was invested in the storylines and quite taken with the unexpected twists and intriguing surprises that popped in as subplots. I’m already eager to see what Ms. Barlow has in store for her next installment with hints of a possible snake in the grass with nefarious intentions shaking up the sleepy village. I adore Ms. Barlow’s unique and vibrant sparks of creativity and felt her conception of the precious little alpaca competing in a dog show as a “pacapoo” was ingenious, as was her heart-squeezing and thoughtful ‘jar of memories.’ Sigh. More, please.
Christie Barlow has rapidly become one of my favorite cozy romance writers and now she is back with a wonderful new addition, Clover Cottage.
When local veterinarian, Rory, is gifted Clover Cottage by his parents, his significant other, Allie, is thrilled. She sees this as a new beginning for the two of them in the town in which they grew up and fell in love. However, Rory is extremely reluctant to take on the renovations of the house, to the point that Ally is worried that it is their relationship in which Rory does not want to invest. Instead, he wants to travel and study abroad, to expand his horizons – and then come back to Allie. Allie, of course, is devastated. As the book unfolds we begin to see that neither of them really knew the secret hopes and desires of one another and we wonder if there is any way this couple can survive.
Clover Cottage is the third book in the Love Heart Lane series so readers will be somewhat familiar with the couple already. What I love most about these two, and all of the residents of Heartcross, is how important their family and friends are to one another. Rather than giving rash advice to Allie – or to Rory – they support them and offer a different perspective which helps this couple get through this difficult time. There are heartaches, illness, secrets and plenty of small town happiness throughout this book for it is the type of story that draws you in from beginning to end. You come to love these people as though they were real which is due to the marvelous character building and writing skills of Christie Barlow.
Although it is the third book in a series, Clover Cottage can be read as a stand alone. To get the feel of the characters, however, I encourage you to read the series as a whole. They are short, heartwarming, quick reads and I know you will be glad that you did.
It's so wonderful to be back in the little village of Heartcross. This is the third book in the Love Heart Lane Series but can be read as a standalone perfectly well.... although I highly recommend reading them all!
This time the story focuses on Allie and Rory.
Allie works in the local pub and Rory is a village vet within his parents practice. Allie and Rory have been together a good while and seem to be heading in the right direction.
But Rory is getting restless. He wants more than Heartcross. He loves Allie but craves adventure and discovery. Much to his parents disappointment! So when he is left Clover Cottage by his parents he feels like it's a way of his parents pressuring him to stay in the village.
So when an opportunity presents itself, Rory is seriously finding it difficult to turn down. But where does that leave Allie? Will the two last the distance? Or will a new spark ignite Allie elsewhere?
Allie and Rory were interesting characters, I really liked that the reader got to understand both points of view in regards to their thought process and decisions. It's never easy to make life changing decisions especially when it effects someone you love. At times it could of come across as Rory being selfish, but if you don't do what makes you happy then in the end you can end up with resentment and that's not good either.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Clover Cottage. It's a highly compelling, heart warming and light hearted story about relationships, following your dreams, making choices, secrets, change, family, dementia, new beginnings, friendship and community life. Not only was there plenty of drama, difficult decisions and heartache, but there was a light hearted humour and wit which balanced out nicely. Along with few lil twists and turns along the way to keep you on your toes.
Christie Barlow is one of my favourite Authors and she has a knack of storytelling with a lot of heart, passion, fun, humour, charm, wit and warmth. Christie has weaved her magic once again with Clover Cottage, she writes the most mesmerising and amazing stories you can't help getting lost in them. I can't wait for the next installment!
Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Christine Barlow has the kind of writing style that sucks you in and makes you want to be part of the world she’s built. The chance to be part of her Scottish town has me envious. Just like the last book of hers I read I’m a little confused which genre it fits into. It’s about a relationship which has hit a bump in the road.
Rory and Allie are an established couple. He’s a vet for the family business. When his parents offer him Clover cottage, Allie thinks she’s finally getting her happily-ever-after, but Rory feels he’s being pushed into his future. He wants to make his own decisions on his own terms. He isn’t ready to settle down even though he loves Allie. Now he must decide if travelling along a once upon a time dream is worth more than the love for his women.
Can the drama against a picturesque setting help the couple find their way forward?
The town, friends and family will suck you in. More could be going on with Rorys parents than he originally thought and someone new in town may shake things up.
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I've just spent the most wonderful couple of hours in Heartcross, back amongst my friends from Love Heart Lane, and meeting whole new ones at the same time.
And what a roller coaster of a book this was, what I can definitely say is Christie Barlow really is producing her best stories and writing with this series. This was another super duper book!
I was hooked from the first few pages, and although at times the conflict between Allie and Rory was getting a bit frustrating, I could see things from both their points of view, and had my everything crossed they would have a great ending.
There is a story line involving Rory's mother that I sort of saw coming but didn't make it any less surprising and then there are revelations involving Rory's father's past that really did shock me. Not to mention the incredibly sexy Netflix star who rocks up in Heartcross and soon feels like part of the gang.
He added a new dimension to the books, and he was in some ways a catalyst for some potentially huge changes in both Rory and Allie's lives.
If you have read the other fantastic books in the series, then you will be as delighted as I am to see Felicity and Isla are Allie's best friends. Oh and there is such an adorable scene involving Mop the llama, and the dog show. I love Mop, he's so cute, and it was so amusing seeing him at the Summer fair.
Clover Cottage itself is key to a lot of the story, but not quite in the way you may expect, but it certainly deserves the title role in this book.
This is a warm and cosy story, if felt like I was wrapped up in a hug and I couldn't stop reading. I love this series so much it's scary, and I'm counting down the days until the next book is out!
Thank you to One More Chapter and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Everything looks on the up for Allie and her boyfriend Rory. They are very much in love and Rory’s parents have given them a cottage that they will be able to make their own. Sadly, the prospect of their own home has the pair feeling torn.
Firstly, I have to say I was so envious of Rory being given Clover Cottage. Yes, it is somewhere that is going to need a lot of work but as a person who loves Grand Designs and similar programmes, like Allie, I could really see the potential in the place. Who doesn’t love a good fixer upper? My imagination was going into over drive and it wasn’t even mine!
Secondly, this is a reminder of how well do we really know our loved ones. We all have hopes and dreams and sometimes it takes something quite big to push us into going for what we want. I wasn’t sure whether Rory was being selfish or not by putting his own dreams before Allie’s. It had me torn and there is a real sense of a ‘will they, won’t they’ vibe going on as to whether this particular relationship will withstand what both these characters want.
Clover Cottage has so much going on that I was instantly transported to Heartcross and the lives of the characters. What a fabulous community to be part of. The back story of Rory’s parents was particularly touching and made for quite an emotional read in parts. I loved how the author keeps her readers on their toes with the romance aspect but over all it is way more than a romance novel. Friendship and community play a big part and this books is filled to the brim. A heartfelt and warming story that stole my head and heart.
My thanks to NetGalley, One More Chapter and Rachel’s Random Reads for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
Clover Cottage is a lovely, cosy, heartwarming read with characters who you will wish that you knew in real life. Allie and Rory have their ups and downs - find me a relationship that doesn't! - but can they reach a compromise?
Both wanting each other but at the same time, each wanting something different from life, we join them as we follow their wonderful story which starts when a Cottage, Clover Cottage, is passed onto them from Rory's parents, Stuart and Alana. Clover Cottage was left to Stuart and Alana by a man in Heartcross, James Kerr, a man who more than enjoyed his drink. The cottage has a lot of potential but needs a total revamp. Allie falls in love with it instantly.
Zach Hudson a famous actor in a Netflix series is staying in Heartcross with his gorgeous Labrador, Sydney, as he is in the area filming a documentary on the Scottish Highlands. I enjoyed the scenes involving Zach, especially one where Stuart is also in the scene as he adds some humour, which I really like in books of this genre.
I loved the setting which the author describes so well, and so much so, that you can really picture yourself there, amongst the characters, a part of their community.
I loved everything about this book, it is a well written story and the sensitive topics are well researched and written with sensitivity. There is plenty of drama, secrets, and all through, I was thinking, will they, won't they?! I loved the love and friendship between the characters, a real close-knit community, always there for each other, no matter what. It was just perfect. The secrets were not expected and helped heighten the drama.
Clover Cottage is the third book in the Love Heart Lane series. It could be read as a stand alone, but much of the backstories and dynamics of the regular characters would be missed.
This story focusses on Rory and Allie. Rory is a vet in his father’s practice but feels constrained and frustrated by what he sees as his father’s old fashioned ways and reluctance to improve the quite small space. Allie, an amateur photographer, works in her parents’ pub and loves her life in the village, surrounded by those she loves.
Invited to Rory’s parents’ house, Allie and Rory are in turns dismayed, angry and elated by the news that Rory’s house in the village is being rented out and they have been gifted Clover Cottage by Rory’s parents. Allie is elated thinking that, although it needed a lot of work, the cottage would be their happy ever after home, perfect for them and with room for a larger veterinary practice. Rory isn’t convinced. He feels angry, seeing forcing a home on him as another measure of control.
Lives are turned upside down yet again when handsome Netflix TV star Zach Hudson, along with his Labrador, arrive in the village to record his new series featuring the Scottish Highlands. Zach is staying in one of Isla’s vans on the farm and is soon accepted into the gang of six friends. His proposed next trip throws up a dilemma for Rory as Zach offers him the chance to do something he has always dreamed of.
Rory and Allie are realistic and relatable characters. The confusion about the direction of their relationship is understandable and showcases the pitfalls of not talking things through properly. But it did give Allie pause to think perhaps new experiences weren’t something to be wary of and wonder what she might achieve in the future.
As with the previous books, I love the writing, the wonderfully described setting and the colourful characters that inhabit the village of Heartcross. There are a couple of side stories, one revelation and another poignant one that will affect Rory’s family. To offset the more sensitive and serious issues are scenes that bring smiles and laughter—a dog show with a surprise entrant and a day filming at the vet surgery. And as always, the emphasis is on family, friendship, community and love. I enjoyed the story very much and the ending was perfect.
I was so excited to be able to read the 3rd book in the "Love Heart Lane" series by Christie Barlow! I haven't been disappointed! I found this book very very good and maybe even better than the 2 first books in the series! So much things are happening in this book that you would never guess. This is a very entertaining book (as well as two first books in the serie). I had a lot of fun reading it. It's a pretty big book but it's a page-turner so no worries! I gave this book a 4 stars out of 5! Very good! I can't wait for Christie Barlow's next book!!!
I loved this book. The Love Heart Lane Series has been fabulous. This is book 3 in the series. I also recommend reading Love Heart Lane and Foxglove Farm (which were equally fabulous!) to get the full back story of the people in the small village of Heartcross. It can be read as a stand-alone as the focus is on different characters, but it was great to catch up with the locals of this beautiful area. I want to live there! This story is based around Rory the vet, who works at his Dad’s practice and his girlfriend Allie the daughter of the local publicans. Introducing a TV star, the handsome Zach, who is filming in the locality for his TV show. He has his faithful dog with him too. He’s stopping on the farm in one of the cute caravans. It’s time for the annual Summer Fete and Zach agrees to help with judging ‘best dog’. A large crowd is guaranteed once the locals get wind of a star in their midst and the ladies put on their fancy clothes to impress him! There is a constant queue of people wanting a selfie. Martha was there with her crystal ball, predicting people’s future. Some of the things she said caused a lot of thought and discussion, especially to Allie. Africa is next on the filming list for Zach and this ignites some feelings from Rory who always dreamed of visiting Africa since his vet school days. No spoilers from me, you’ll need to read it. It’s got everything you could want from a book, the community spirit, family and love. I absolutely loved it. Thanks to Christie Barlow for creating this story, and I did shed a tear. How she keeps writing these beautiful stories is astonishing. I love them! Thanks to HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for the review copy in which I give my honest opinion.
The trials and tribulations of following your dreams and making the most of your opportunities can put a real strain on your romance - especially if your parents are interfering and not letting you make your own choices!
Being gifted a home, complete with land, may sound like a dream come true but for vet Rory Scott it is just another attempt by his parents to trap him in Heartcross, especially when they start suggesting it will be a home for him and their new daughter in law in front of his girlfriend before he's even considered asking her to marry him! Allie MacDonald is devastated by Rory's reaction to his parent's gift. It gets worse, however, when a visiting heartthrob and television documentary star comes to the village with unexpected consequences! Rory seems in a total state of flux, unable to decide whether to follow his dreams to work in Africa or his heart and stay with Allie in Heartcross. What will he decide in the end?
There are plenty of twists and turns in this village romance, including some shocking surprises. It is a story with a community at its heart, one where dreams can come true in unexpected ways. There are some fantastic characters in it, including some fabulous children, adorable pets and supportive neighbours. This is a great series and I slipped straight back into the story from the start. I suspect it is more enjoyable for folks like me who have followed the romances and characters through the previous two books in the Love Heart Lane series but it will still work well as a standalone. I certainly enjoyed it and will be looking out for more by this author and in this series in future!
I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.
I couldn’t wait to read this book as such a wonderful series and didn’t disappoint me at all. The book was fantastic from the first page. Brilliantly well written and worth far more than five stars. Full of romance friendship and heartbreak and families along with travel. Simply brilliant. Rory is the village vet and he’s living in a cottage his parents rent out and his wonderful girlfriend Allie who works at the pub. His parents drop a bombshell on him one day to say they are renting out his cottage to someone and he’s been given a wonderful cottage called clover cottage and his parents think he can settle down with Allie. He says he’s not ready for this and needs to make his own decisions and not forced into being a happy family. Allie is so upset with this as thought they were a couple she gets upset. In the meantime an actor is on the island and his dog is run over and Rory saves him and he soon becomes known as the supervet. Allie takes a photograph and it hits the papers and she’s given an opportunity that could chance her life will she take it. Also Rory has also wanted to go to Africa and is given the chance and is going but then he gets a family health problem gay makes him think again and cancel. Will he go or not and will him and Allie be able to settle at their new cottage and be a happy family or not which will be the best option for them both and can they both have something different but both be happy together. Amazing book from the first page.
I loved this book, i genuinely struggled to put it down. It is one in a series, but it is so well written, it can be enjoyed as a stand alone. I was pulled in right from the first page and i was totally absorbed in the story. I really hope there is going to be another book from this series.
Three books into the Love Heart Lane series by Christie Barlow and I am continuously wishing wishing that Heartcross, the small village in the Scottish Highlands that Christie has created, was real and that I could visit it. The magic created by this talented author in book one is still evident in spades in this new book Clover Cottage and I loved every minute of it right from the opening paragraph. Family bonds, community spirit and friendship all feature strongly and these are the themes that cement the books as one of the best series I have read in a long time. I eagerly await the publication of each new book and Christie has not disappointed in the slightest so far, in fact each story just gets better and better the more we get to know all of the various characters.
I love that each story allows more characters to step to the forefront and share their problems, issues and the good times and the bad with us. Old familiar characters I have come to care about so much are always there in the background just letting us know that they haven't been forgotten. Whilst with each new book, people who perhaps lingered ever so slightly in the background waiting for the right moment are allowed to step into the spotlight to share their life story with us. This time around Christie has dealt with an issue surrounding the older generation which you rarely, if ever, see mentioned in books and she deserves to be applauded for the way it was handled with such sensitivity and tact. It's an issue which all of as have been affected by at some stage in our lives through close family relatives or connections with other families and friends. Rather than it becoming a pervading sense of doom and heartache it was something to be nurtured and cared for and all the community gathered together in the most compassionate and caring of ways to help a family through what will be a difficult time in the months and years to come. Everyone has had experience of this and I thank Christie for dealing with this and for the warm-hearted and sympathetic manner in which she did so.
Allie McDonald loves the bones of her boyfriend Rory Scott just as much as she loves the little village of Heartcross and she envisages her happy ever after moment not too far in the distant future. She works in the Grouse and Haggis pub run by her parents whilst Rory is a vet working in his parents practice. Everything she has ever wanted is there in the village and she could never contemplate leaving whereas Rory is the opposite. Up until now she thought things in their relationship were on an even keel and that they had one goal in mind. Marriage seemed to be on the cards or so Allie thought but Rory is growing more and more frustrated with his work life. His father Stuart can't see that changes need to be made at the practice. That the ways and methods they use are becoming outdated and that sticking to the way things are will only halt further progress and expansion of the business. When Rory and Allie are asked to meet with his parents they are surprised to discover that the family home is to be sold and that Clover Cottage, left to Stuart by a customer, is to be given to them both their reactions are very much mixed.
Allie views this new opportunity as a new start in life and a further step in cementing their relationship. To her it's natural but Rory has other ideas and she begins to question whether they are really right for each other in the long term given they have such different viewpoints. I was completely torn in two as to whose stance I favoured. I could understand Rory that by being given the cottage felt this was another way of trapping/keeping him in the village doing the same old thing every day with his opinions in regard to the business not being listened to. He wanted to get out and explore the world a bit before establishing firm roots. There was so much more he wanted to do with regard to his profession and when TV presenter Zach Hudson arrives to film in the village, new opportunities outside the lanes of Heartcross are presented to Rory. Many of which he feels he can't afford to turn down as for too long he believes his parents have a hold over him and that everything in life revolves around his parents long term aspirations for him.
All this makes it sound as if Rory was very selfish and narrow minded and to some extent I did feel he was only thinking of himself instead of the bigger picture as surely there was more going on than when you first begin to scratch beneath the surface. But at the same time Rory was young and had dreams he wanted to see reach fulfilment and to be honest he was stuck between a rock and a hard place as to what his ultimate decision should be. As I moved further into the book, I just hoped that he kept Allie, his parents and all the other friends he had in Heartcross at the forefront of his mind. Rather than letting fame and other distractions get in the way of what was really there waiting for him right before his eyes. If he really stopped and looked that little bit deeper he would see the signs and clues that were there and the reader does too as I picked up on something much bigger going on long before many of the characters did.
As a result of Rory declining Clover Cottage, Allie feels all at sea in her relationship, the man she thought she knew so well perhaps she didn't at all as his feelings have really surprised her. She feels insecure and fearful and starts to fret over what the future holds and really you couldn't blame her. She doesn't like change and you sense that there is plenty of that in store for herself and Rory on the horizon. On the other hand Allie begins to question her own life and that maybe she has become too safe and secure in her job in the pub. It's the easiest and safest option surrounded by those she loves but should she expand her outlook too and perhaps take more of an interest in photography. This is something which she has always loved so much and she is good at it. Will some new moments come her way and will she be strong enough to grab them?
At one point I just wanted Allie to confront Rory and tell him exactly what she thought of what he was saying and doing with regards to their life. I thought she bottled things up too much and was worrying all by herself instead of sharing the load. I knew she loved both Heartcross and Rory so much as do many readers because Christie has created such a special and unique atmosphere in the village but Allie shouldn't have felt that she should settle for second best or that she too has become stifled. The arrival of Zach was the perfect catalyst to get both Allie and Rory thinking about their futures. I loved how both sides of Allie and Rory's perspectives were clearly presented to the reader and that's why I was torn in two as to what I actually wanted to happen. It would be selfish to say oh I am with Allie all the way when we first read about her viewpoint but as we venture further through the story and changes of heart occur and time is taken to step back and observe and contemplate everything the readers opinions and feelings do change as do Allie's.
Suffice to say there is a lot going on in this visit to Heartcross but throughout it all the author provided plenty of laugh out loud moments especially with the baby llama at the local show, a scene stealer for sure. Felicity and Isla from the previous two books do pop up every now and again and the friendship as a trio that they have developed with Allie is so lovely to read about. You just know that they have each others backs as does every resident in the village. Without a doubt, throughout this wonderful story emotional and deep moments are balanced nicely with fun, laughter and enjoyment but throughout it all community spirit, solidarity, love and friendship shine through showing the bonds established in Heartcross are firm and unbreakable.
Clover Cottage is a worthy addition to the Love Heart Lane series, the books have become so warm and inviting that you never want to leave. Starcross Manor, book number four, will be with us in July but in the meantime enjoy every moment of this brilliant book.
I have been trying to limit the books I read on NetGalley and haven't requested any for a good few months however when One More Chapter invited me to read this 3rd story in the Love Heart Lane series I couldn't resist and pleased I didn't!
This book focused on characters from the previous 2 novels - Rory and Allie - and I thoroughly enjoyed their story.
The book starts when Rory's parents gift him and his girlfriend Allie a cottage in the village of Heartcross. This leads to some unrest for the couple with Rory getting itchy feet about seeing more of the world and leaving Allie confused about their relationship and where she stands. There are a few hurdles to overcome before we see whether Rory and Allie can find their happy ever after.
The inclusion of TV star Zach and his adorable Labrador Sydney brought some new energy alongside some favourite characters from the previous 2 books.
There was much to enjoy about this feel-good read and I understand there will be another story set in Heartcross and I'm excited to return for the next chapter!
My many thanks to One More Chapter (Harper Collins) via NetGalley for providing me with this advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review.
A return to the village of Heartcross, this time following Allie and Rory's story. Settle down and start a family, or spread your wings first? A familiar dilemma, handled well. Also subplots covering dementia, fame and a legacy resulting from a secret past. I enjoyed it.
I was about 3 pages in when I started to recognize the writing style, and sure enough, I’d read another of this author’s titles a couple of years back, and have several of her titles in my TBR pile. Characters that are both compelling and engaging, a story that is full of hope and change, and a few little hiccups in the road to keep everyone on their toes. And Allie and Rory have the hiccups but it is the strength of their relationship, and the friends they both have in the little village of Heartcross. Allie is a ‘one place’ kind of girl, after her early childhood of moving frequently, landing in Heartcross where her parents own the pub was the best thing ever. Roots, friends, a place to belong – she’s dug in and never thought of more. Except when it comes to Rory. Friends since childhood, they’ve been dating for a while now, and Allie is ready to start the next chapter.
But an opportunity in the form of a famous actor and documentarian have come to stay in town, and he’s using the downtime to regroup before heading to Africa for a year to film a Lion Conservancy project among other things. When his dog is hit after the town’s festival, Rory jumps into take control, as the local vet with his father, he’s managed the dog’s care, setting her leg and finding notoriety and some new opportunities in being that close to the ‘famous’ spotlight. With a short ‘day in the life’ series made at the veterinary clinic, and opportunities to travel to Africa (a lifelong dream) the relationship with Allie is, in her mind, all gone pear shaped. Rory wants to travel and experience new things, Allie is much more the country mouse and wants to be home.
We’ve got plenty of friends all adding their two cents, some revelations for Rory from his own parents and a cottage that, as Allie sees it, is perfect for the two of them to move forward in their relationship. But everything is thrown to the winds as the two need to sort out the ‘what next’ and Allie comes to terms with Rory’s dream of Africa, and her own little bit of meddling to offer him an opportunity. There are friends, family and love galore in this little village: when all comes to climax, Allie has learned to take (and look forward to) new opportunities while remaining grounded in her own little village and plans for the future with Rory. A lovely story that will make you want to trek to Heartcross simply to take in the atmosphere and meet the people, looking to befriend everyone you meet.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
Plenty of reviewers have already covered this book in great detail. I had read one of the predecessors in the Heartcross series so this was marginally even more fun than if read as a standalone. I would now like to read the other book and any future books in the series. Comments for the proofreader or author: Why write down details of an email when you could have simply forwarded it to Stuart? How did Allie know the second client had a dog when she had been watching guinea pigs in the surgery since they arrived? "Any way" is not the same as "anyway". Somebody's son is "he", not "it". Allie was wrong to say she had lived in Heartcross all her life. A cottage described as being on the outskirts of a village is hardly "in the heart" of it. Allie's surname capitalization varies throughout the book, and the back-cover blurb chooses the less common version.
This may be the third book in a series but reads perfectly as a standalone - I hadn't read any of the previous books but thoroughly enjoyed this!
Christie Barlow has an exquisite style of writing, which draws you into her story and fall in love with the characters she has created. The friendships and kindness of the residents of Heartcross had me jealous!
I felt like I was thrown into the story immediately with Rory and Allie, an established couple going through a patch of conflict. Rory and Allie seem to want completely different things in life with Rory determined he wants to go to Africa to help injured animals but Allie is happy in her small Scottish village. When Rory's parents offer the pair Clover Cottage an idyllic cottage that is desperate for a lot of much needed renovation, Rory feels like he's been pushed into a future he doesn't feel ready for. Rory must decide if being a small town vet is enough or if his dreams are too big for Heartcross...
This was a fab read but I kept feeling really frustrated with Rory and his attitude towards his partner at times. I felt he was oblivious to the world around him. I really empathised with Allie and her poor anxious heart throughout.
It's a warm, cosy read which lets you sit back and just be absorbed in the story. A really lovely read.
Fun, uplifting and delightfully feel-good, Christie Barlow takes up back to the enchanting village of Heartcross with the latest engaging and immensely enjoyable instalment in the series, Clover Cottage.
Allie MacDonald thinks that she has hit the jackpot. She loves her life in the quaint village of Heartcross, enjoys her job as a barmaid in the family pub and loves nothing more than indulging in her passion for photography. With a fabulous boyfriend who is gorgeous, kind-hearted and wonderful in every sense of the word by her side, Allie is over the moon when Rory is informed by his parents that they’ve bought ramshackle Clover Cottage for the two of them. While Allie is already mentally planning how she is going to decorate the house, Rory is absolutely incandescent with rage. How dare his parents interfere in his life this way? Rory cannot believe that his parents have manipulated this situation to try and force his hand to marry Allie and hearing her boyfriend make such a startling admission leads her to wonder whether their relationship is as secure as she had thought it to be.
Rory is head over heels in love with Allie, but lately he has found himself chafing at the claustrophobic shackles his parents have imposed upon him. He works at the family practice as a vet, he lives in a house he rents from them and he is still living in the village he grew up in. Rory wants to see the world and experience life far away from Heartcross and even though he cannot imagine a life without Allie, he has big dreams of his own he is determined to follow and pursue. When the chance to go and work in Africa comes along, Rory realises he would be a fool to turn down this wonderfully opportunity and maybe once he gets this big overseas experience out of his system, he can return back to Heartcross and set up home with Allie…or will he?
Allie couldn’t possibly stand in the way of Rory’s dreams of working in Africa, but finding herself all alone in Heartcross, she begins to wonder whether the time has come for her to put herself first. Allie has dreams of her own which she has put on the backburner for so long – maybe now is the time for her to stop living in the shadows and to grab life by the horns and start forging her own path?
Will Clover Cottage end up being Allie and Rory’s forever home? Or will the two of them end drifting up apart and realising that their relationship is simply not meant to be?
Charming, captivating and so brilliantly compulsive that readers will have great difficulty putting it down, Christie Barlow’s Clover Cottage is a poignant and addictive tale of finding yourself, renewal, second chances and love lost and found set in a beautiful village featuring characters who come to such vivid life on the page readers will not want to say goodbye to them at the end of the book – especially kind-hearted and spirited Allie who goes on a journey of discovery to find out who she really is and what she can achieve.
Christie Barlow’s delightful rural tales of life in Heartcross are an absolute joy to read and Clover Cottage is certainly no different. Full of joy, charm and heart, Clover Cottage is another outstanding page-turner by Christie Barlow.
I have been a fan of Christie's work for quite a while now. I love the way in which she combines the drama with the romance and with a generous helping of feel good vibes. I read the synopsis for 'Clover Cottage' and it certainly sounded just the kind of fabulous and distracting read that I so desperately needed at that particular moment in time. I must be psychic because I absolutely loved reading 'Clover Cottage' but more about that in a bit. I was drawn to this book by the lovely bright and colourful cover and the synopsis of the story sold the book to me. As soon as I started to read, I immediately immersed myself in the lives and loves of the residents of 'Love Heart Lane'. I enjoyed reading the book so much that I was able to shut out all other distractions and focus solely on the book. Usually I have the attention span of a gnat and I am easily distracted but not in this case. The pages turned over at speed and I was so absorbed by the story that I lost all track of time and just how quickly the pages were turning. The first time I checked on my reading progress I was staggered to realise that I had read over a third of the book. Reading 'Clover Cottage' felt more like a chat between friends than an actual book. 'Clover Cottage' is well written but then I think the same about all of Christie's books. Christie has a writing style that is easy to take to and easy to get along with. She has a way of creating characters who are impossible to dislike and who feel more like friends by the time you get to the end of the story. Christie has a way of grabbing your attention from the start and she draws you into the story. I genuinely felt as though I was part of the story myself and that's all thanks to Christie's fantastic storytelling. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Clover Cottage' and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. This was a fabulously feel good, romantic read. I can say with absolute certainty that I will be reading more of Christie's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
This was an absolutely wonderful read. It's the third in the Loveheart Lane series but could easily be read as a standalone. This book follows Rory and Allie. Rory works for the family vet business, but wants to modernise and expand, but is facing resistance from his dad. Allie also works for her family business as a barmaid. They both feel beholden to their family whilst having dreams of a different type of life. Allie thinks they are ready to settle down and when the offer of Clover Cottage is on the table she doesn't understand the upset it causes. Rory wants to break free and follow his younger dreams but what will that mean for their relationship or for the family. You really feel the characters being pulled in different directions and can understand each point of view, whilst also thinking about the dream cottage that has such potential but is also going to be a money pit that may be a step too far. I loved the village community feel with the excitement of a big celebrity staying in their midst. They welcome him and he loves the friendships he witnesses. You really feel as though you are amongst them, discussing everything and getting to know them. A lovely book.
I was delighted to be back in the Scottish village of Heartcross and so happy that the characters from the two previous Love Heart Lane series shared a part in Clover Cottage.
However, this was vet Rory and barmaid/photographer Allie’s story. We had already met the couple in previous books but find out much more about them in this story. It’s obvious from the start that Rory and Allie are both at different stages in their relationship. This comes to the forefront when Rory inherits a cottage. Allie wants to settle there and raise a family but Rory doesn’t feel ready, he is ambitious to travel and experience life away from Heartcross.
I really enjoyed reading how the couple’s relationship changed as opportunities came along and really tested them. We see a huge change in Rory’s personality especially as events make him realise that he has some selfish traits. I loved the dog show with a very novel entrant and a huge sense of community spirit which runs through all of Christie Barlow’s books.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable, cosy read with endearing characters and plenty of surprises along the way.
What a cute and cosy read! It was a pleasure to once again visit the village of Heartcross and Love Heart Lane. Enjoyed Rory and Allie's story as well as the introduction of Zach and a few other characters. Hopefully this series will endure and we will have many future books set in Heartcross!
Great read to curl up with a cup of tea and enjoy on a cold winter afternoon.
My copy was provided by NetGalley for review, all opinions are my own.
This is the 3rd book I’ve read by Christie Barlow and it didn’t disappoint. I’m really enjoying reading the Love Heart Lane Series.
It’s nice meeting new characters and catching up with old ones.
I really loved the story of Allie and Rory and getting to know them through out the book. I thoroughly enjoyed Clover Cottage and would definitely recommend it. I’m really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
