The Life Triumphant: Mastering the Heart and Mind

Rate this book
Offering his patented brand of spiritual advice that relied as much on self-empowerment as inspiration, James Allen-one of the most popular writers in the field at the turn of the 20th century-sets out to show the elements of character and conduct that go towards building a "life of calm strength and superlative victory." In helping the reader achieve "victory over all the dark things of life," Allen has written a self-help book for anyone "eager to learn, and earnest to achieve." This is another inspirational landmark from the bestselling author of As a Man Thinketh. British author and pop philosopher JAMES ALLEN (1864-1912) retired from the business world to pursue a life of writing and contemplation. He authored many books about the power of thought including The Way of Peace, The Mastery of Destiny, and Entering the Kingdom.

Allen was 15 when his father, a businessman, was robbed and murdered. He left school to work full-time in several British manufacturing firms to help support the family. He later married Lily L. Allen and became an executive secretary for a large company. At age 38, inspired by the writings of Leo Tolstoy, he retired from employment. Allen — along with his wife and their daughter, Nohra — moved to a small cottage in Ilfracombe, Devon, England to pursue a simple life of contemplation. There he wrote for nine years, producing 19 works. He also edited and published a magazine, "The Light of Reason".

Allen's books illustrate the use of the power of thought to increase personal capabilities. Although he never achieved great fame or wealth, his works continue to influence people around the world, including the New Thought movement.

Allen's most famous book, As a Man Thinketh, was published in 1902. It is now considered a classic self-help book. Its underlying premise is that noble thoughts make a noble person, while lowly thoughts make a miserable person.

Following his death in 1912, his wife continued publishing the magazine under the name, "The Epoch".

Let me tell you a real life incident. In the afternoon, something happened that caused confusion and unhappiness in my mind. I suffer from anxiety and mood issues. So, my mind started making a mountain out of molehill torturing me.
In general circumstances, I waste hours with tormented thoughts. Today for some reason, I decided to take a different course. I picked this book and started reading.
I was 75% in the book when the issue that was bothering me solved itself.
Like magic.
I am a believer of mind over matter, and such incidences strengthen my believe, what is within, is without. What is without, is within.

I have done quotes as I read through this book. There is wisdom here. My last quote is

"He is truly wise who, in the midst of worldly duties, is always calm, always gentle, always patient. He accepts things as they are, and does not wish nor grieve, desire nor regret. "

Suffering is the recoil of misdirected strength. It is thus that weakness is converted into strength, helplessness into power, and suffering into bliss. By turning his energies from the old channels of vice, and directing them into the new channels of virtue, the sinner becomes a saint.

Calmness is the crowning beauty of a character, which is not disturbed or overthrown by trials and emergencies, or by the accusations, slanders, and misrepresentations of others, is born of great spiritual strength. Purity and joy abide with him, and the universe again rejoices in the triumph of good and hails another conqueror.

I read as a man thinketh and it helped remind me of treating my mind like a garden and not letting unwanted thoughts be nurtured and grow like weeds unattended to in my garden while also nurturing and planting seeds for plants/ thoughts I do want. It was a great book and my sister happened to have gotten me this one for Christmas. It was a shorter read so I decided to crack it open here recently and it’s been just as great. A lot of talk of virtue to reach the life triumphant and been a good reminder every day reading it in the morning and remembering it throughout my day. Grateful for it and what it instilled in me.

This book tells the power of faith and how simplicity can transform you into an enlightened person.
You can conquer your animalistic behaviors with self-control and a controlled way of thinking.
It also tells us about how our assumptions and hypotheses veil us from the simple truth of life and true knowledge.

James Allen is, I guess, one of the pioneers in understanding how our thinking shapes our lives, and the work of many authors in modern self-help literature is inspired by him.
