In this Regency romance a young miss succeeds in escaping an unwanted marriage, only to end up finding love.
A kidnapped young miss. A protective Scotsman. And a cabin in the woods in the deep of winter.
England 1804: SARAH MORTENSEN, daughter to BARON HARTMORE, is desperate…desperate to escape yet another horrible match her parents arranged for her. Once, she saw it as her duty to save her family from ruin, to sacrifice herself in order to repay her father’s gambling debts. But enough is enough. Determined to escape her latest fiancé, Sarah places her trust in the Dowager Countess of Whickerton, known far and wide as Grandma Edie. After all, no one is as shrewd as the dowager countess…or as daring. Her plan is outrageous. Her intentions, however, are pure. And so, Sarah agrees…to a feigned kidnapping…hoping to win her freedom.
KEIR MACKINNEAR, second son to the chief of CLAN MACKINNEAR in the Scottish Highlands, questions his own sanity when he finds himself kidnapping a shy, wide-eyed English lass from her London home in the middle of the night. He ought never have gone along with the Dowager Countess of Whickerton’s ludicrous plan! Yet here they are, hiding out in a cabin in the woods in the middle of winter! Only the two of them! Not counting two horses, an old goat, a handful of chickens and a haughty feline by the name of Loki. What could go wrong? After all, the dowager countess is not known to be wrong. Ever. Yet what slips Keir’s mind is that Grandma Edie loves nothing more than to play matchmaker. And while she is certainly determined to save Sarah from her vile fiancé, she might just have an ulterior motive. Why not hit two birds with one stone?
Some stories can be told in one book. Others cannot. This is one of those stories.
An epic love story that spans across an entire series. Ensure that you have a good cup of tea, something to nibble on and perhaps a box of tissues at hand before you dive into this slow-burn Regency romance full of enchanting moments between Sarah and Keir, the little wisp and the highlander.
I must say this dragged on as an annoying, chicken hearted, young woman who could scarcely put one foot in front of another finally took action. Scolded or rather berated on one shoulder by the voice of her mother and encouraged on the other by the voice of Grandma Edie, Sarah has screwed up enough courage to flee her situation. Sarah Mortensen, daughter to Baron Hartmore, was to be given in marriage to a older man as payment for her father’s gambling debts. The night before her wedding she managed to leave the house in the middle of the night, get into a carriage and decamp out of London, escorted by an unknown gentleman, Keir MacKinnear, second son of a Highland Laird. Keir does all he can to make this timid mouse not fear him, but Sarah’s more like a deer caught in the cross fires than anything else. Keir has been sent by Grandma Edie to perform a little task for her. A feigned abduction, a ‘kidnapping!’ The rest of the novel divided itself between Sarah being teased by Keir and her gathering her courage. Keir refers to her as ‘little wisp’. We have occasional glimpses of anger from her unpleasant fiancé, Albert Harris, Baron Blackmore. Then there’s machinations of the Dowager Countess, Lady Whickerton, the grandmother of her closest friend. Yes known to the family as Grandma Edie. It all ends with an HEA that didn’t come quickly enough for me.
A Wolf ARC via NetGalley. Many thanks to the author and publisher.
I just couldn't get over the excruciatingly slow pace, lack of any development whatsoever, and the WIMP of a heroine, I mean, utterly spineless and stupid to boot!
The way this story is written is quite interesting. At the beginning the dialogue among Keir and Sarah was one sided for a number of chapters. Each time Keir would ask her a question, I was hoping She would give a response. The story was told in an entertaining way. This contributed to the book being an easy page turner. I thought the characters were fun and entertaining. I enjoyed reading this holiday read.

The start of a new series but we did meet both Sarh & Keir in the Whickertons series & I’m so glad one of my favourite characters Grandma Edie features. A well written, charming read with strong characters & a well paced story. I loved Keir who was patient, gentle & caring of Sarah. I must admit Sarah annoyed me at the beginning of the book, I’m not a lover of the helpless, timid female but as the story progressed Sarah gained a backbone & her confidence & self esteem grew. I love for all ends to be tied up but this book ended on a cliffhanger so there's now a wait for the next book My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Flames of Winter by Bree Wolf is an imaginative story about a young woman who is about to be sold to an old man as his bride, and as payment of her father’s gambling debts. Sarah Mortenson was about to do something that required bravery, a commodity she was sadly lacking in. She was going to run, well, ostensibly she was to be kidnapped, by herself. Grandma Edie, The Dowager Lady Whickerton, had arranged it all, including the carriage waiting for her at the end of the mews. She did it. Only when they got out of town did she meet her “captor,” Keir Mackinnear, second son of a Scottish laird and grandson to Grandma Edie’s best friend. He took her to a small cabin in the woods that he had prepared for them. There was food, firewood, and clothing for them both. They would be here until the ransom was paid. Then Sarah could go home. Since she was ruined she would no have to marry Lord Blackmore, and she could us the collected ransom to pay her father’s gambling debts. She was frightened but Grandma Edie said it was a good plan and she had helped Sarah before.
Grandma Edie was a schemer. She had her own motives and while they were compatible with Sarah’s, they took more time. Sarah and Keir spent enough time together to get to know one another. They also spent enough time in the cabin for Sarah’s self-esteem to improve. She was capable and she was able to survive away from her parents. She was still nervous. What if Blackmore found them? Well-written characters, Sarah and Keir, give this novel a life. Keir is a gentle man, one who cares about Sarah as a human before he falls in love with her. Of course, we knew they would fall in love, but did we see Sarah becoming strong in the process. Strong enough to leave him behind? It was a good story.
I was invited to read a free-ARC of Flames of Winter by Wolf Publishing, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #WolfPublishing #BreeWolf #FlamesOfWinter
Little Wisp and the Highlander: A very naive Sarah is a desperate frightened lady with a plan to escape her betrothed. A much older man her father has bartered her off to pay his gambling debts. Grandma Edie, who is a clever friend, is part of the plan of her escape. The planned abduction brings forth Keir. My hero of this story. He's a wonderful, sweet highlander with a lot of patience as he has to deal with a very spoiled, helpless, frightened. and sheltered Sarah. It is interesting to see how much Sarah changes throughout this story. A slow attraction hoping for a blossoming romance is in their future. A charming story, a darling cat, dangerous boar, and so much more. An interesting story with intriguing characters. I had not read any of the previous books of the series, so I wasn't aware of connections with the Whickerton family. That wasn't a problem though. Beautiful Cover I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my honest opinion.
"Grandma Edie's special sort of madness had often proved to be invaluable in procuring another's happiness." A genuinely frightened young woman, stronger than she thinks, rescues herself from an unwanted marriage. With a little help from Grandma Edie. And a young Scottish 'criminal'. Watch her come alive while reading this story. The flames of her courage warming the cold winter and Keir's heart. Lovely story! I received acopy and chose to review it.
Chapter after chapter, I hoped the story would get better but it became so repetitive, I struggled to read it to the end....and even then, there's no end since you have to wait until March for the next book to come out to find out what happens between Sarah and Keir! I've read many Bree Wolf books and have enjoyed them all....but not this one. I felt no heat or passion between them, Sarah was so timid it drove me crazy and I swear the cat is the only redeeming quality in the whole story!! Much too long, very repetitive and the cliffhanger ending just did me in.
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
A Love Story! In this first book of Bree Wolf's new series, we read about how Sarah and Keir meet up, learn all about what makes both of them tick, share in their adventure and have the pleasure of watching them fall in love. I believe it is the first installment of a trilogy and I am eagerly awaiting their next exciting adventure. I read an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) and my voluntary review is recorded above.
Although this is Book 1 of the Flames of Winter series, it seems to depend heavily upon a family called the Whickertons who must have had their own series. I had the feeling that background information was missing as a result. Sarah Mortensen is as timid as a mouse, always striving to please her parents, but they have nothing but criticism for her. She's a wilted hothouse flower, riddled with self-doubt, going weak at the knees at the drop of a hat. The family's estate is bankrupt because of her father's gambling. In order to pay his debts to Lord Blackmore, he offers her to him in marriage. Grandma Whickerton helps her by having the handsome Scotsman Keir kidnap her for ransom the night before the wedding. They spend two weeks together in a hidden cottage where Sarah's timidity and Keir's attempts to draw her out become tediously repetitive. The goal was to ruin her reputation with the kidnapping so that the evil Lord Blackmore would renege. The goal was achieved. She goes home to the censure of society and becomes companion to Grandma Edie.
What I didn't know until I started reading was that this is a series of four books, and you have to read all of them to reach a HEA. Even so, comments on Amazon indicate that things were NOT tied up neatly at the end. The author promised to write another book at some distant future date to finish what was left unfinished. I'm not tempted. I won't even read Book 2 in that case. This one was too drawn out as it is. Not recommended for those reasons.
Romance, sweet, period; series Sarah and Kier’s novel is the first part of this story. More of a 3.5 for me as a reader, told from alternating points of view. Sarah agrees to pretend to be kidnapped to get out of an unwanted marriage to a cruel peer to get rid of her father’s gambling debts, without any choice in the matter. She learns to be independent, self assured, and choose to learn how to go beyond the criticisms and belittling her famiky has forced on her. Most importantly, she learns she can be treasured. Lovely fall, can’t wait to see where this goes!
Even though the story was too long, it was a sweet blossoming love story between Keira and Sarah. The writer didn’t have to keep going on and on about Sarah being fearful, gaining her confidence, living her own life, and setting herself free. But, this is still a sweet romance that is going to be continued book 2. I especially like the Dowager Grandmother Edie.
There's a disclaimer in the front of the book stating there are stories that can be told in one book, and that this isn't one of them. It should have been, and if the next book is going to focus on her sister then this one should have cleanly wrapped up the story lines started. We still have the ex fiancé hanging around, Kier and Sarah do not have any kind of understanding although they've kissed a couple of times. Sarah is still an uninteresting protagonist. Kier isn't a captivating male lead and the entire situation felt forced and melodramatic. I sat down I tried to read, and then ended up skipping through the book trying to find interesting scenes. Very few it turned out. We've got the obligatory body heat one that usually pops up whenever any characters are stranded somewhere in winter/cold climates. There was the one time I smiled in amusement which was when the cat attacked Albert ,the fiancé ,who's name I didn't recognize for a minute before it clicked. (Look I got to at least 40% before I started skipping ahead. by that time we did have a POV from the guy but he's so generic he didn't exactly make an impression. If I were writing this review 30 minutes from now I would not remember his name. Or probably Sarah's name or Kier's. Or really anything else Which is why I'm writing right now. ) And those are the two scenes I can really remember. Loki is officially my favorite character. And not just because I am a cat person. More Passion, more passion more energy more EN-Ner-gY is the mantra that's going through my head right now. I don't need sex scenes, or even a lot of kissing. but I do need to feel chemistry, a connection, anything. Instead we get cardboard cutout of characters. Sarah is a weak-willed, sniveling character. who granted does at least start to face her fears and trauma. Given that she is the main character Sarah was not someone I enjoyed reading about or cared to be inside her head. Keir was meh, not swoon worthy material. Albert did not engender any strong emotions. If the characters can't carry the story then the plot will have to do some heavy lifting. It did not. at all. I had no desire to find out what happened. not that much did anyway. We start off with Sarah getting into the carriage and I'm like okay good, we're starting off with action. Why's she doing this where's she going? What's going on. But then I quickly grew tired of her and Keir wasn't interesting enough, Albert's POV as I mentioned was uninspiring. But this is a short book I figured I could get through it. Which I did. Barely. And while the ending isn't a cliff hanger per say. It does not end well. I'm sorry I think I'm just in the mood to rant and I haven't had lunch yet. I will try to think of something positive to say. Loki the cat was great. I feel like I've invested more in this review than the book. So I'll wrap it up here. Recommended? not really Buy/Borrow? Borrow
An incredibly slow paced read, so it's amusing to see the author tell us that some stories can be told in one book but this one cannot. Like, are you sure? Or is it that you're drawing it out?
This book was pretty hard to get through. I had to skim the entire book from start to finish. It never picked up or got super interesting. It was very slow. And because of that I was absolutely shocked that it ended on a “cliff hanger”, if you can even call it that, and that there was another book to continue this story because it was so unnecessary. The way this author writes is so wordy and repetitive. She spends so much time having the characters inner monologue about the same things over and over and over. Everything is talked about to death. And by everything I mean the one plot point of the story. So we have to listen to the characters talk about basically the same things over and over and over. The author could have trimmed this book by half or more and we wouldn’t have missed anything. That’s why I was shocked there was a to be continued.
Sarah was okay. I liked the character progression from terrified to…a little less terrified haha. Okay so it wasn’t that much of a progression but the author did put effort into showing her change a little and become a little more capable. But she wasn’t very interesting overall. She didn’t make the story happen. The story happened to her. Keir was also fine. He was just a little too upbeat or something. Like he didn’t fit the tone of the situation. That can be a good thing to have that contrast in a story, but I don’t know in this it didn’t work for me as much. Nothing horrible but he felt a little one note. A little predictable or something. Their relationship was fine. I was glad the author didn’t go straight into insta love or insta lust. But it was still only a matter of days before they loved eachother. And there wasn’t any real passion or anything. The love happened easily and it was all very sweet and cutesy.
Also I don’t like when an author uses a bunch of different characters points of view to tell the story. It feels too easy and too convenient. Plus then there is really no mystery or wondering at all. We know absolutely everything that is going on and we know what everyone is thinking and doing about everything. So it’s all so straightforward and easy.
Overall it was just really slow and not enough happens. I don’t care enough about the characters to continue their story.
What a wonderful story that has Grandma Edie right in the center pulling strings to bring two people together. This is a new series that focuses on Sarah Mortensen who is the family friend of the Whickertons. We have met her in many of that family's stories as her parents have tried to marry her off to any willing man that would get them out of debt. Her situation is dire as her father has chosen a much older gentleman to marry her. He is cruel and she knows she cannot go through with the wedding even though all her life she has been trained to put her family's needs first above her own. Grandma Edie comes up with a plan to have her fake kidnapped to break the betrothal. Sarah has to find the courage to go along with the plan and allow herself to get kidnapped by a strange man.
KEIR MACKINNEAR, second son to the chief of CLAN MACKINNEAR has a connection to the Whickerton family through his grandmother. She has been a close friend of Grandma Edie, even though they do not get to see one another. He has also been in a few of the Whickerton family stories and now Grandma Edie has chosen him to be the man to kidnap Sarah. This will have Sarah and Keir spending quite some time alone together hiding out in a cabin in the woods. Not knowing all that Grandma Edie has planned is usual for Keir but he suspects she is up to some matchmaking scheme.
I loved reading about the transformation of Sarah as she learned to have confidence in her abilities. Keir could see how beat down she was by a family that did nothing to encourage her to have her own dreams. He gave her opportunities to learn to cook, care for chickens and finally get over her fear of horses. She even learned how to shoot a gun and use a knife to protect herself.
I loved everything about this book but it came to an end too soon and even though I knew the story would be continued in another story, I was sad to see it end in a cliff hanger.
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.
I received an ARC of this book from Wolf Publishing. I find books from this author are hit-or-miss; some are great and some are disappointing. I’m giving this one four stars because I loved the story and the way it was told. I’m only giving it four stars because I found the inclusion of a supernatural, god-like cat named Loki made it unbelievable. This cat, somehow, always knows what people are saying to it and acts accordingly. It offers comfort and guards Kiern and Sarah in response to either of them telling it to watch over the other person. It immediately reminded me of the wolf in Wronged & Respected (which I didn’t mention in my review of that book because I had so many other negative things to say and I didn’t want to go overboard). Basically, a wolf played the same kind of roll in that book—protecting the humans and being more intelligent than some of the humans, and managing to turn up whenever he was needed. Loki does the same thing in this book. Too much focus on an animal, IMO, makes for a third character who becomes just as important as the two MCs. I wish I knew how to put into words just how much it distracts from the love story between Kiern and Sarah.
From the beginning, Lady Sarah was an annoying character, so shy she was unable to speak in Kiern’s presence. He was amazingly patient and understanding—much more so than I would have been. She blushes over the littlest embarrassments, even if they’re just her thoughts. Luckily, she changed over the course of their ordeal and became a stronger, more confident woman. Kiern isn’t the focus of this story as much as Sarah because he doesn’t have the need to grow that she does. This is really about her journey, how he facilitates it, and how they fall in love during the process.
As I got closer to the end, I found myself thinking it would be impossible to wrap up all of the loose ends in the remaining pages. They were not. It ends on a cliffhanger, although thankfully, we can already see that Sarah and Kiern’s HEA is imminent.
This story is set in the same time as the last of the Whickerton series by Bree Wolf. The wonderful Whickerton characters that we love are all here. But the sisters and Troy (all married now and some with babies) are minor characters who only make brief appearances. The key characters are Grandmother Edie, the Dowager Lady Whickerton, Sarah Mortensen the second daughter of Baron Hartmore and Kier MacKinnear the second son of the Laird of Clan MacKinnear. Sarah has played a role in the other Whickerton stories as her parents have tried many times to marry her off to pay for her father’s debts! Keir has also played roles in the other stories in between mysterious errands for Grandmother Edie. Ms. Wolf has again created interesting and likeable characters in a historical setting. The dialog is well written and follows the time period. I liked Sarah in the other stories as she balanced between trying to help the Wickerton sisters while obeying her parents. But I was uncertain in the beginning of this story as she is very timid and cannot even speak to Keir. I was annoyed at her dithering. Keir as always is charming, strong and protective. But as the story progresses, you begin to understand the forces that shaped Sarah’s life and why she has such a difficult time standing up! I began to root for her efforts to become stronger! Sarah works hard to free herself from the rules of society and gain her freedom from having to marry! Ms. Wolf has skillfully created a story that blends charming characters, and the power of friends and family to make a success of life. This is a clean romance with wonderful characters. I highly recommend this story. But a warning – the story ends with a HFN and will continue into the next book! So be aware of this.
The same heart aching sweetness that one came to expect of The Whickertons! Though the Whickerton families stories have all been told, it seemed that one story was forgotten. Sarah may not carry the Whickerton name but she had always felt a part of that family. Obviously, I was not alone in that thought as we now have not one, but an entire series to tell her story. After a lifetime as an obedient, often forgotten daughter, it seems only right that she be given an epic love story full of all the adventures she has missed. From the very start her connection with Keir is obvious, so strong is their chemistry. Keir has always been able to draw others out and make them feel comfortable, that much was obvious in his interactions with Juliet in her story. This made him the perfect choice of protector for Sarah. With everything being arranged by Grandma Edie, obviously it was a blatant matchmaking scheme. She cannot help but meddle. That word is often viewed negatively, but with Grandma Edie, it is backed with so much love and conviction that it is never wrong. This story is told in a beautiful flow. The events all play out with strong purpose and leave you with an aching wanting for their happiness. Both main characters are so easy to love and I cannot wait to continue their journey. As much as I hate cliffhangers, the slow burn of anticipation is compelling. Truly, there story is too expansive to be contained in one book and I am grateful for that. Often, there is an element of a story that you want told, but the it is left unsaid. This way, we get to continue on with them in a endless epilogue of what happens next. A beautiful story of the pure longing of true love.
Flames of Winter by Bree Wolf is a cosy and comfortable story. It iss an imaginative story about a young woman who is about to be sold to an old man as payment of her father’s gambling debts. Sarah Mortenson needed to be brave, well Grandma Edie, the Dowager Lady Whickerton, was not going to have it and plotted a kidnapping had arranged it all, including the carriage waiting for her at the end of the mews. She did it. Only when they got out of town did she meet her “captor,” Keir Mackinnear, second son of a Scottish laird and grandson to Grandma Edie’s best friend. Strong enough to leave him behind
Grandma Edie is once again up to mischief. This time helping Sarah Mortensen a family friend to escape another unwanted marriage arranged by her parents.
Grandma Edie has asked her good friend’s son, Keir MacKinnear to “fake” kidnap Sarah so they escape to an isolated cabin in the woods. If you have been reading the Whickertons in love series you have met Sarah in earlier books. She is a shy and obedient daughter who has no confidence in herself and does not value her worth as a person because of how her parents have treated her. Kier is a sweet, handsome, teasing, and supportive Scotsman we’d love to hide away with in the woods. He sees Sarah for the women she is and helps her see it too!
Although, initially Sarah is frightened by Keir because he is her kidnapper she realizes she can trust him. It was so satisfying to watch Sarah realize her own potential because of the encouragement that Keir gives to her and her transformation to a self-assured young lady.
Once again, Bree has written a seriously entertaining story, with a little bit of everything, a pretend kidnapping, wonderful characters, a myriad of emotions, adventure, laughter, unexpected events, and our friends the Whickertons. She has left us wanting for more as we anxiously wait to see the outcome of Sarah and Keir relationship in the next book.
I received an ARC copy of the book from Wolf publishing and this is my honest unbiased review.
Oh my gosh, I thoroughly enjoyed this story! It captured my attention from the start, carried it all the way through, and with several of the final chapters I just couldn't put it down! That alone launched my rating from 4 stars to 5!
Quick synopsis: typical situation of a mediocre father who basically "sells" his daughter Sarah to whomever will give him the money he needs to cancel his gambling debts. Of course she's young & adorable, & the fiance is is a lecherous old creep. Night before the wedding, Sarah escapes with the help of family friend, seemingly innocent Grandma Edie, Dowager Countess of Whickerton.
I won't spill anymore about the story, it's definitely worth the read. But, I do love this paragraph on pg. 277 which summarizes just how important this 'innocent', conniving, & very clever, Grandma Edie is to the series. It's the perfect character teaser: '"Of course, dear," Grandma Edie said with a smile, patting her arm. "You're family, and we take care of our own."Sometimes it takes a bit longer and requires great ingenuity," she chuckled, her eyes flashing with amusement, "but we never give up, do we?"' Oh, she IS good!
Now if you will excuse me, I have all the books in the series & I intend to jump readily into #2....
PS - The stunning cover of the book was my first draw to the series. (Although the book I have is not the same as the one GoodReads shows. The cover they show is on book #2) Doesn't matter! Well done, Bree Wolf!
Sarah Mortensen is terrified of her fiancé and her wedding day is tomorrow. She flees in the middle of the night with only the clothes she is wearing. A friend has arranged for a trustworthy person to meet her in a feigned kidnapping. Keir Mackinnear is the trustworthy person Grandma Edie has chosen to assist Sarah. Sarah is so frightened of everyone and everything she flinches and stumbles at the slightest noise. Keir sees how frightened she is and wonders at the cause. So did I. They travel through the night and stop just outside of London. There they switch from a coach to horses to travel but Sarah faints when she see's the horses. Keir picks her up and they ride double with the other horse following. They finally arrive at a small cabin in the woods the next afternoon. Keir soon discovers that Sarah has no idea how to cook or clean so he teaches her and hopes she will soon come to trust him. Grandma Edie has sent a ransom note to Sarah's parents anonymously and spreads it around town that Sarah has been kidnapped knowing that Sarah will be ruined and Baron Blackmore will then agree to call off the wedding. This is a multiple book series and leaves the reader hanging. The author states there are at least two more books. I have to say I do not like cliffhangers; however, the book was very interesting.
Another great regency story with shrewd Grandma Edie saving the day--and matchmaking as well! Sarah agrees to a fake kidnapping to escape an arranged marriage with an older, lecherous fiance. She enters a mysterious carriage and is taken to a small cabin in the woods in the middle of the night. Sarah doesn't trust Kier, her kidnapper, but is assured she is safe because Grandma Edie arranged it and Kier is a kind, caring man. As the two become better acquainted in the cabin while waiting for the ransom to be paid, Keir teaches Sarah how to cook, stitch an open wound, feed the chickens, and so much more that she was never permitted to learn because of her upper class standing. Along the way, Sarah is transformed into a confident young woman, overcoming her fears (& her mother's critical voice in her head) one by one. A beautiful love story that abruptly ends when the ransom is paid, and Sarah must return to her family home. Will she ever see Keir again? And what to say about the brave cat, Loki! A wonderful story, and I can't wait to read how/if it continues. . .but if I know Grandma Edie, it surely will! I received a complimentary ARC of this book and have voluntarily expressed my honest opinion in this review.
This is the first of a new and captivating series, Flames of Winter, and it is off to a brilliant start! Sarah knows it is her duty to save her family from ruin brought on by her father's gambling debt. But she can no longer go through with facing the many aged suitors that come her way. Desperate to find another solution, she turns to the Dowager Countess of Whickerton, also known as Grandma Edie. Grandma Edie comes up with quite a plan and her good friend's son, Keir, reluctantly goes along with her plan and finds himself kidnapping Sarah and they end up in a cabin in the woods, alone together. Grandma Edie's plan may be outrageous, but she has the best of intentions. After all, she loves to play matchmaker. As Keir and Sarah spend time together, Sarah begins to open and goes from being a shy, sheltered girl to a more confident young woman and a beautiful relationship begins to blossom between the two. The story was interesting and entertaining with likable characters. A bit of adventure and some unexpected events made this quite an enjoyable story. I can't wait to see what fun story comes next! I received a complimentary copy from Wolf Publishing and the author and am voluntarily leaving my review.
a women's rights were limited back in history and parents were allowed to choose their husbands and their daughters are expected to do their duty abide by their family and marry the chosen groom. but not all daughters are happy with the choice their parents make for them due too finances or social climbing. This is a spin-off of the Whickertons and, in my opinion, it is absolutely necessary to read that series before this one. The unique talents of Grandma Edie are not going to be showcased enough otherwise. The best feature of the present book is, naturally, Keir. He is a fictional character in both the literal sense and in the sense of being too perfect to be true. Seriously, if you met him in real life, I can guarantee you that you are - not even dreaming - certainly embedded in a work of fiction. Poor Sarah is as timid as a woodland creature. Happily, she does develop a personality. Otherwise, had she remained stuck in the template allotted her in the Whickerton series, this would have been a one-directional novel, indeed.
One thing that irks me has absolutely nothing to do with the emotion of the novel, or how well researched the period is. Those are my usual qualms. Well, this time around my irascible self is bothered by culinary arts. How does our lovely couple brown the meat for the stew? Was that even done in that era? Why does Sarah keep trying the stew from the get go? Doesn't she have to wait a bit for the chicken to cook because salmonella? Other than that, do read the book. It's nice in the best possible sense.
I read a romance after such a long time and I am sad to say I was expecting way more from this than what it delivered. First chapter started with a twist and my hopes were high in terms of plot, characters and overall potential it had on the story development. Not my cup of tea.
4.75 The reason for not getting 5 stars is because it’s a cliff hanger ughhh but outstanding as always Bree does not disappoint! Grandma Edie has apparently been planning a rescue of Sarah from unwanted marriages for literally years! The story unfolds as the latest attempt for her to marry an obnoxious older Lord with grandchildren to pay off het father’s gambling debts! Lord Blackmore loves for people especially women to fear him! He is also the loathesome man she is betrothed to! Keir has been given several tasks over his stay with the Whickerton family and this latest assignment certainly bares risks! If you like kidnappings, ransom and a ruined reputation so that you won’t Have to get married then dive in! This is actually so much more than this Sarah goes from being frightened of her own shadow to growing into the strong much more confident woman she originally was before the cares of life wore her down! There is danger intrigue and even a hunter! I love the changes in Kier and Sarah even though the ending is a cliffhanger! **I received a complementary copy of this book for my honest review! ** Bravo
