Sometimes heroes emerge from the most unlikely places...
Haruko Tanaka isn't someone you'd expect to be magical—she's a geeky, manga-loving game-designer living under the roof of The Regime's finest contraband burners. When The Commander appears under her roof claiming she can be part of a program to turn her into a magical girl, she jumps at the chance to be like her fictional heroes!
But reality is often different from fiction and elitist rebels, eccentric classmates, and after school activities are not what Haruko signed up for! With the help of her friends, Haruko must tackle her school life, find her place, and discover the truth of the puppet master behind their world.
Haruko and her friends must step up and face their worst fears to make The Regime a better place or watch the seeds of disaster begin to grow.
Catherine Kopf is the owner of Dream Cat Publishing, currently working hard to bring stories to life whether it be writing her own or helping edit essays and fiction and nonfiction prose. An arts advocate who loves cookie dough, she enjoys spending time with animals, going to church, exploring her new home in Central Florida, and diving into her next favorite book. Cooking and spending time with friends just make the adventures sweeter.
At nine-years-old, Catherine fell in love with whimsical writing and fun, fantasy prose with relatable friendships. She started writing from a young age, wanting to weave her active imagination and fun characters into the stories. Some of her favorite books include Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse, Amari and the Night Brothers, The Thing About Jellyfish, and The School for Good and Evil.
Catherine hopes to create and edit stories that not only come off the page but relate on a deeper level to the people who read them.
Dreamer’s Eclipse, the third book of The Dream Chronicles brings a new perspective to the series with a protagonist switch. It still brings a whimsical style to a light academia setting full of magic, action and friendship, along with plenty of new characters to love and hate.
The new protagonist is Haruko Tanaka, a tech girl and gamer that desperately wants to be a magical girl and change her dull country. When she’s offered that chance and enters a school for kids with magic, she finds herself wrapped up in a world full of adventure missions, friends and enemies, and much more! I love Haruko, she starts out shy, but slowly breaks out of her shell, doing her best with a growing determination to improve her bland country. She’s very much a magical girl lead, binding her group of friends to not give up, even when things look bad. I really loved Suvi, June, and Nyx, all with distinct personalities and backstories, all mixing together into a perfect cupcake as they bond together. Not to forget the adults and teachers who guide the group along the way, as well as the enemies, fleshed out as well.
The story moves along at a steady pace, with the school being a constant setting, there are several segments that take the story across the country, and kept me on my toes as I wondered what was next. The world building gets expanded, exploring a side of the Regime that was mostly out of view in the first two books of The Dream Chronicles, showing that things aren’t exactly as they seem at first. The prose is easy to read, with some sense of lyricism as we explore this other side of the story.
While this is book three of the series, this is a good starting point for The Dream Chronicles, with Haruko taking the lead, and it’s also great for those that have read Awakening Dreams and Shattering Silence, and important for the series as it leads into the finale of the series.
Really enjoyed this adventure and a great starting point for new readers and adds complexity for returning readers. Highly recommended for both Middle Grade and Young Adult readers.
*I was an early reader and helped the author in production of this book. All opinions are my own.*
I loved everything about Dreamer’s Eclipse. It is the third book in the Dream Chronicles series, and like the previous books, DE is packed to the brim with heartwarming friendships, unique magical abilities, cunning villains, and daunting escapades. We follow a young girl named Haruko on a journey where she finds herself, navigates school life, faces her inner demons, and makes close friends worth fighting for. The unique magic and storyline kept me intrigued. Another aspect I enjoyed in DE was that you didn't have to read the previous two books in the series to understand it. While I recommend reading the first two books, Awakening Dreams, and Shattering Silence, because they're masterpieces, the storyline of DE will not be lost without them. Everything from Catherine's extensive world-building to realistic, relatable characters, this book was a page-turner. It's perfect for those who enjoy MG dystopian fiction filled with action, adventure, friends, and delicious baked goods.
