She studied philology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. After some family tensions, she returned to Japan to work in a big Japanese company in Tokyo. Her experience of this time is told in Fear and Trembling. She has written a romanticized biography (Robert des noms propres) for the French female singer RoBERT in 2002 and during the period 2000-2002 she wrote the lyrics for nine tracks of the same artist. Many ideas inserted in her books come from the conversations she had with an Italian man, from late eighties and during the nineties. She used the French Minitel, while he used the Italian Videotel system, connected with the French one. They never met personally.

في أثناء حصار مدينة سراييفو، خلال حرب البلقان، أو كما تسمى حرب يوغوسلافيا، كان الكثير من الناس يموتون من شدة البرد، واضطر الكثير منهم لحرق كتبهم القيمة والثمينة من أجل الحصول على القليل من الدفء. ألهمت تلك الفكرة الكاتبة آميلي نوثمب لكتابة مسرحيتها الوحيدة خلال مشوارها الأدبي..
تطرح الكاتبة عدة أسئلة، حول التغيرات التي تطرأ على الإنسان وربما يحاول ذلك الإنسان التنصل منها وإلصاقها بالحرب. فمن خلال الشخصيات الثلاثة المكونة للمسرحية، تطرح آميلي تلك الأسئلة، حول الأستاذ الجامعي الذي يقول شيئاً لطلابه ويفعل النقيض، ومساعده دانيال، الذي يتفاجأ من معلمه وحياته المختلفة التي يعيشها، وأخيرا مارينا، الفتاة التي يحبها دانيال.
بسبب شدة البرد، تسأل مارينا الأستاذ، حول امكانية حرق بعض كتب مكتبته الكبيرة، لتمنحهم ذلك الدفء المنشود، في البداية يرفض الأستاذ، ولكن بعد مناقشة مثيرة بينهما، يوافق. و لكن السؤال، ما الكتاب الذي يستحق الحرق؟ وما الكتاب الوحيد الذي ستحتفظ به؟ وهل بإمكاننا فعل أي شيء حتى نتمكن من الحياة؟

This fucking sucked. I think I've never read a play that was more useless and pretentious, and I've read La Sainte Courtisane by Oscar Wilde, so that's saying something. Amélie Nothomb really irritates me but kind of in a good way. She seems quite fucked up and I respect that. I highly enjoyed Robert des noms propres and I am very interested in reading more from her, since she always comes up with the weirdest and bizarre ideas for her novels... play writing, however, doesn't seem to be her thing though, even in her novels I don't think that dialogues are her strong points, it's usually the idea behind the story that's most brilliant.
The same kind of applies to Les Combustibles (eng.: Human Rites) as it's about good ole book burning. We are in a war setting where fuels are getting scarce, that's why a professor, his assistant and the assistant's girlfriend decide to burn some books to relish in the heat. The question arises which books should be burned first and what the consequences of these actions are.
The play is complete horse shit, if you ask me. The writing is messy, the dialogues are weird and not authentic (even though she tries to create a realistic vibe). The setting is beyond unbelievable (especially the background info of having a war going on in that country). The characters were annoying as hell and whilst I started out liking the professor and his sassy ways, I just wanted to punch his ass toward the end. The way he sexually harassed Marina was so fucking creepy (her reaction towards the abuse was even weirder) and just made me mad. Overall, I literally got nothing out of reading this play. It was beyond boring.
I felt like Nothomb was trying to showcase the decline of humanity: by burning the books the characters became more and more unethical and nearly "animalistic" (all of this rolling around on the floor fighting, I would cackle if it hadn't been so damn annoying). However, Nothomb's execution is too messy, the point she makes too obvious. An old professor who turns out to be shallow and impudent. A young woman whose obsession gets the best of her. A young man becoming disillusioned with love and his mentor. What's new? I can't help but compare her to Yasmina Reza who's an excellent playwright and who excels at showing the fucked up human condition.
I'm still veeeery interested in reading more of her novels because many of their synopsis just sound too good to be true but I'm staying away of her plays from now on. Oh, and to answer the central question of the play, if I could just keep one book of my entire collection and had to burn the rest, I would keep The Collected Works of Oscar Wilde, without a doubt. What about you?

Un livre n'est pas un bibelot que l'on contemple pour se consoler du monde. Un livre, c'est un détonateur qui sert à faire réagir les gens.I was kind of keen on this idea since I am a bibliophile myself and reading about books always makes me happy, I wasn't necessarily expecting another Fahrenheit 451 but I was hoping for a broader message. Amélie left me thoroughly disappointed on that front.

Le tolgo un punto per un solo motivo: non le perdono di essersi inventata i testi bruciati, perdendo così l'occasione di far gettare tra le fiamme i Promessi Sposi o un capitolo a caso del Pendolo di Foucault.
Ciononostante, ogni volta che leggo il genio Amelie mi domando come si possa avere una fantasia tanto fervida!
Anche qui il contesto è quasi invisibile: una guerra persa, tanto freddo ed un appartamento condiviso da un professore, il suo assistente ed un'universitaria. E una biblioteca con tanti libri! Uno ad uno sono destinati a bruciare per dare loro calore e così inizia il countdown della letteratura da ardere.
E voi quali libri brucereste?

La domanda classica: quale libro porteresti con te su un'isola deserta? Una domanda che ogni lettore si è posto a un certo punto della sua vita di lettore, e a cui probabilmente ha fatto fatica a rispondere. In questa pièce teatrale dell'autrice belga, invece, la prospettiva si ribalta: quale libro saresti disposto a sacrificare per un bene superiore?
Siamo in un paese imprecisato, in un periodo storico imprecisato. Sappiamo solo che è in corso una guerra, che è inverno e che i nostri tre protagonisti si trovano in una città assediata che sta vivendo il suo secondo inverno di assedio. Come possiamo dunque immaginare, fanno da sfondo la morte, la fame, il freddo. Quest'ultimo però non è sullo sfondo, ma è anzi il nucleo intorno a cui ruota il dramma: è un inverno molto freddo, i tre protagonisti (un professore cinquantenne senza nome, un assistente trentenne di nome Daniel e la sua fidanzata ventenne di nome Marina) si trovano in una casa gelida e praticamente priva di mobili, in quanto li hanno già bruciati tutti per riscaldarsi. Resta solo una grande libreria con moltissimi libri. Gli scaffali sono di metallo, quindi non possono essere bruciati.
Inevitabilmente, a un certo punto uno dei tre soffrirà così tanto il freddo da proporre l'indicibile: bruciare i libri per fare un po' di calore.
Va tenuto presente che i tre protagonisti sono tre persone che sostanzialmente vivono dell'università: uno come professore, l'altro come assistente e l'ultima come studentessa. Sono quindi persone colte che danno moltissimo valore alla letteratura e al mezzo che permette di veicolarla, ossia il libro cartaceo. Eppure, la disperazione può far passare sopra perfino alle proprie passioni più profonde e autentiche.
I protagonisti, stremati da una guerra e da un assedio che sembrano infiniti, da un freddo che sembra divorarli pezzo per pezzo, si riducono a comportarsi come animali. Anzi, come dice Marina, forse non si comportano come animali, ma sono animali.
Marina è la più disperata dei tre: magra, emaciata, piccola e giovanissima, soffre il freddo molto più degli altri. Il professore lo sopporta stoicamente in un vano tentativo di darsi un'apparenza di normalità: nonostante il gelo, rifiuta di indossare il cappotto in casa perché vuole avere la libertà di stare senza cappotto in casa sua. Un modo disperato di attaccarsi a una normalità che non c'è più da tempo, a un'abitudine che necessariamente dovrebbe essere rivista e stravolta perché le condizioni non sono più normali. Daniel, invece, passa molto tempo in università: si mette vicino al muro, dove passano le tubature che gli permettono di sentire un po' di calore.
Marina non trova conforto, non trova pace: Marina è il volto della disperazione, della perdita di speranza e di umanità. Marina ha un solo scopo oramai nella vita, tutte le sue energie tendono a quello e tutta la sua giornata è trascorsa nel tentativo di soddisfare quell'esigenza: combattere il freddo. La ragazza cerca il caldo dovunque riesca a trovarlo, e il posto più logico sono i libri che tappezzano le pareti della casa del professore.
Le parole pronunciate da Marina nel corso della breve pièce sono terribili, Marina è davvero regredita al rango di bestia, ma ciò che rende ancora più drammatica questa regressione è la naturalezza con cui la ragazza la porta avanti. Riusciamo a scorgere tratti di dolcezza in Marina, riusciamo a vedere come in passato, prima della guerra, sia stata una ragazza dolce, tenera, forse allegra, sicuramente intellettuale, molto probabilmente piena di vita. Non resta niente di questo, ora. Oggi, Marina vuole solo scaldarsi, e non arretrerà di fronte a niente per ottenere il suo scopo.
I libri, in realtà, sembrano essere solo un pretesto per raccontare una storia di abbrutimento. Ma l'abbrutimento che qui vediamo è circonfuso di un'aura che non ci aspetteremmo: dopotutto, i nostri protagonisti erano degli intellettuali in tempo di pace, e questo significa che sullo sfondo della loro disperazione riusciamo ancora a vedere un barlume di ciò che erano in precedenza. Perciò siamo di fronte a un abbrutimento tanto più straniante in quanto non ce lo aspetteremmo in tre persone di questo genere. Eppure, la guerra è guerra per tutti, e la regressione è inevitabile per chiunque, qualunque sia la sua classe sociale o il suo livello culturale.

Une belle surprise: je ne suis pas une grande fan d'Amélie Nothomb (Mercure et surtout Stupeur et tremblements m'avaient peu plu) et j'ignorais qu'elle avait écrit du théâtre. Le style d'écriture ne m'a guère davantage plu que lors de mes lectures précédentes, mais le sujet était particulièrement intéressant et plutôt bien traité: à la question "quel livre emporteriez-vous sur une île déserte", Nothomb rétorque "quel livre, quelle phrase de quel livre vaut qu'on lui sacrifie un instant, un seul instant de chaleur physique [en temps de guerre] ?" Autour de cette question principale, gravitent une série d'autres débattues par les trois protagonistes de cette pièce, comme celles de la littérature, son rôle, son utilité, l'usage qu'on en fait, etc. Aucune réponse univoque n'est apportée, chaque personnage ayant sa propre opinion et s'opposant aux autres: c'est donc au lecteur à créer son avis, stimulé par ce livre.

La scrittrice francese mette in luce tutta la sua inventiva e fantasia per questa sua opera. "Libri da ardere" è un testo teatrale che ha come ambientazione una unica stanza con tre protagonisti: Un professore, il suo assistente Daniele e Marina, la compagna di quest'ultimo. La guerra e il freddo sono armi che li stanno pian piano uccidendo e devono cercare di ripararsi in qualche modo.
L'unico modo per riuscire a sopravvivere è bruciare i libri e i tre dovranno scegliere quali libri meritano di essere bruciati, arsi per riscaldarsi e quindi non morire.
Una opera teatrale in cui il cinismo e la freddezza sono la colonna portante. Non c'è spazio per i sentimenti, la compassione. Pensare di bruciare dei libri per garantirsi la vita, soprattutto per chi fa della cultura e della letteratura il suo mestiere non è facile, ma se fosse l'unica alternativa possibile alla vostra sopravvivenza, voi cosa fareste? E quali libri brucereste?
L'unico modo per riuscire a sopravvivere è bruciare i libri e i tre dovranno scegliere quali libri meritano di essere bruciati, arsi per riscaldarsi e quindi non morire.
Una opera teatrale in cui il cinismo e la freddezza sono la colonna portante. Non c'è spazio per i sentimenti, la compassione. Pensare di bruciare dei libri per garantirsi la vita, soprattutto per chi fa della cultura e della letteratura il suo mestiere non è facile, ma se fosse l'unica alternativa possibile alla vostra sopravvivenza, voi cosa fareste? Les Combustibles!
Questa ‘pièce’ di M.lle Nothomb si legge, piacevolmente, in un attimo, ma ti invita a ben più lunghe riflessioni. I temi sono tanti e non intendo qui sciupare il piacere della loro scoperta. Solo due brevi considerazioni.
La Guerra e l’Inverno creano un ‘clima’ psicologico che mi ha ricordato, con le dovute, rispettose proporzioni, il tema dell’“assenza” ricorrente ne La peste.
Le considerazioni sulla scelta dei libri ‘da ardere’ hanno creato un ‘ponte’ concettuale con Fahrenheit 451 e l'originalissimo modo (su cui varrebbe la pena sviluppare alcune riflessioni ...) di accendere il caminetto da parte di Pepe Carvalho.
« … Car je ne laisserai à personne d’autre qu’à moi le privilège de foutre le feu à cet emmerdeur!».

Questa ‘pièce’ di M.lle Nothomb si legge, piacevolmente, in un attimo, ma ti invita a ben più lunghe riflessioni. I temi sono tanti e non intendo qui sciupare il piacere della loro scoperta. Solo due brevi considerazioni.
La Guerra e l’Inverno creano un ‘clima’ psicologico che mi ha ricordato, con le dovute, rispettose proporzioni, il tema dell’“assenza” ricorrente ne La peste.
Le considerazioni sulla scelta dei libri ‘da ardere’ hanno creato un ‘ponte’ concettuale con Fahrenheit 451 e l'originalissimo modo (su cui varrebbe la pena sviluppare alcune riflessioni ...) di accendere il caminetto da parte di Pepe Carvalho.

თავიდან ამ სიტუაციამ ეგრევე სარტრის ცხრაკლიტული გამახსენა. და მერე რამოდენიმეჯერ გაიჟღერა ფრაზამ "ჯოჯოხეთი სიცივეა". ომის პერიოდია, პროფესორი და მისი ორი სტუდენტი, ერთ სახლში არიან გამოკეტილნი. გარეთ გასვლა სიკვდილია და სახლში დარჩენაც თითქმის იგივე. გასათბობად ერთადერთი საშუალება წიგნების დაწვაა.

Mi-a placut foarte mult piesa aceasta de teatru.
Romanele lui Amelie Nothomb au inceput sa imi placa si cred ca o sa mai citesc cateva anul acesta (sunt oricum carti scurte, daca mergi cu metroul din Dristor pana in Militari citesti doua, daca mergi cu RATB pe aceiasi ruta, dai gata Opere complete :)) )
Chiar daca sunt romane scurte, nu inseamna ca sunt lipsite de continut si nici de stil. Minimalist, stilul este totusi usor digerabil, curge. Teme: umanitate / dezumanizare, un soi de drama a intelectualului - stiu ca suna a cliseu, dar nu este deloc in cursul piesei.
Interesant este ca nicaieri pe coperta sau pe prima pagina nu scrie ca ar fi o piesa de teatru. Poate de asta am si trait cu impresia ca se vrea a fi roman, dar sub forma unei piesa de teatru, ca si cum forma si specia din care face parte textul sunt irelevante, ca si cum autorul are puterea de a-si alege ce vrea sa scrie, in cazul asta un roman, dar forma si specia sunt la fel, decizii personale, nu respecta reguli canonice.
In ceea ce priveste povestea... Nu vreau sa povestesc prea multe pentru ca ea vorbeste de la sine (iar eu oricum nu fac rezumate in aceste mici recenzii).

Cosa si salva della nostra umanità quando la guerra è intorno a noi? Qual è l'ultimo libro che si salverà?
Questi sono gli interrogativi che questo testo teatrale affronta e a cui cerca di dare una risposta. Lettura intensa, temi impegnativi affrontati con decisione.
Devo ammettere, ho colto con un sospiro di sollievo il fatto che i titoli bruciati fossero invenzioni di sana pianta dell'autrice. Credo che mi avrebbe toccato maggiormente nel profondo.

C'est difficile à dire, mais j'ai tout de même un peu de mal avec les textes qui me donnent l'impression d'avoir été écrit par le premier de la classe. L'élève surdoué qui fait tout comme il faut pour obtenir les bonnes notes et avoir une bonne place dans un système forcement faible. D'autant plus quand il se veut critique et ouvert à l'absurdité humaine.

Ce livre se lit en 1 heure de temps. C'est une pièce de théâtre dont les thèmes sont assez intéréssant. Le dialogue est captivant. Jai pu imaginé les scènes se dérouler, les personnages agir et le rythme valser.
J'adore surtout l'ironie et le cynisme de Nothomb.

Un court roman centré sur une intrigue horrible pour tous les lecteurs : si vous deviez sacrifier un roman pour vous chauffer en pleine guerre, lequel choisiriez-vous?
J’ai apprécié les questionnements générés par cette trame de fond, qui soulignent également la suprématie accordée aux romans dits de grande littérature.

Une véritable tragédie en trois actes qui se déroule en période de guerre. Le professeur s'est caché dans son appartement avec son assistant Daniel et une étudiante, Marina. Bientôt, ils n'ont plus de combustibles pour alimenter le poêle qui les maintient en vie. La bibliothèque du professeur semble la solution, mais quel livre sacrifier en premier ? Une bataille acharnée entre le froid et l'esprit !

You know, seeing someone you admire coming up with something this bad is... kind of a relief. She's human, after all.
This piece has Amélie's traits combined in the worst way possible. It attempts to be a praise of literature, and to showcase a young female character confronting a superior's cruelty in the most eccentric unexpected way. Creative intelligence baffling the entitlement of traditional pretentious erudition. Super cool, right? I wish.
The play doesn't make sense. The personality of 2/3 of the characters is way too twisted without really serving the plot at all. The nameless war is absolutely unbelievable as well, and we can't really empathise with the loss of books when the only one that seems to be truly cherished by any of them is only because of the fact it helps sugarcoat the fact she "allowed herself to be raped" (oxymoron alert) out of an incomprehensible desperation. Seriously, what the hell. Read something else.

مسرحية وقاد النار تتحدث عن مجتمع البوسة والهرسك أيام الحصار الصربي الكرواتي.
تدور أحداثها داخل مكتبة الجامعة، وأبطالها ثلاثة أفراد. دكتور جامعي وتلميذه وطالبة جامعية، والثلاثة محاصرون داخل المكتبة والبرد يكاد يقتلهم بسبب جليد الشتاء وعدم وجود وقود للتدفئة.
يلجأ الثلاثة إلي حرق الكتب كتابا فكتاب للتدفئة. وفي النهاية تنتهي المكتبة كي يبقي الإنسان.
حرق الكتب كان علامة من علامات توحش الإنسان وسقوطه إلي أسفل.
النص بسيط جدا وممتاز جدا.

Petit roman qui se lit d'une traite. En pleine guerre, il fait froid. Pour vous réchauffer, vous n'avez pratiquement pas le choix de brûler vos livres. Quel sera celui que vous voudriez mettre dans le poêle à bois en dernier? Petite réflexion sommaire sur la littérature, très sommaire... Quelques jeux de mots intéressants et de phrases habiles. Rien de plus. S'oubliera dans le temps de le dire. Je continue de me questionner sur la valeur de Nothomb. Surfaite sa réputation? Je continue ma quête.

الأستاذ الجامعي، و صاحب المنزل (و الذي يستضيف دانيال - مساعد أستاذ- و صديقته مارينا) يسلق بعض الكتب بالنقد أمام طلبته... ولكنه، سرا، يستمتع بقرائتها. ظروف الاحتجاز و البرد الشديد يدفعان بالثلاثة إلى إحراق الكتب من أجل شعلة تدفئة بعدما أتوا على أثاث البيت. و السؤال الذي يطرحه قارئ/مشاهد المسرحية: أي الكتب أحق بالاستبقاء.؟

Lecture brève, intéressante, mais sans réelle intrigue sinon celle qui concerne le livre qui sera, on l'espère, ultimement épargné en ce temps de guerre où le froid sévit et où les seuls combustibles à portée de main se trouvent dans les bibliothèques. On assiste à des échanges caustiques qui tournent un peu en rond, et puis c'est déjà fini. Contente d'en avoir fait lecture, mais de là à recommander celle-ci...

Pas mon préféré des ouvrages d'Amélie Nothomb. L'utilisation de livres comme combustibles malgré ma grande sensibilité au froid reste une aberration, un outrage insurmontable, un crime. Et la réflexion métaphysique du roman sur la guerre, ses ravages et la faculté humaine de finalement oublier et recommencer, les personnages, bref, tout, rien, ça ne l'a fait pas pour moi.

Pièce théâtrale très courte , divertissante et humoristique ! L'idée et le thème sont géniaux mais auraient pu être plus développés au risque que les répliques se fassent passer pour de simples platitudes. J'ai quand même bien aimé , les personnages cyniques tels que Le professeur et Marina me fascineront toujours.

Bello come sono belli i libri di Amelie. E poi ci si domanda ancora se è meglio approfittare del presente o sperare in un futuro mentre ogni scusa è buona per scegliere sia l’una sia l’altra via verso un destino che nessuno può prevedere.
Ciò che conta però è non perdere mai di vista l’estetica dei fenomeni.
