ACED.: The sequel to CrackerJack!

SWITCH ON YOUR INNER LIGHT; BRING FORTH YOUR GIFTS.

Alonzo Prier, Esquire, leaves his prominent New Jersey Assistant Attorney General job and heads to Washington, D.C. Tracked down by the well-established law firm with the independent federal consulting contract, he’s the best for the business…not just theirs, but the business about the country. Unsavory times! Medicare and Medicaid officials struggling with those social programs’ challenges. Managed Care unhinged by way of HMOs delivering the health and wellness goods, but not really. It was January 2000. Health insurance considerations throughout the land at fever pitch. Public and private.

Man up for the challenge…charismatic, highly intelligent, vast healthcare industry knowledge. But not everybody wanted that. Some wanted him out; others wanted him in bed with them. Specifically, the women working Washington. He brings sexy back, while ushering intellect and integrity in. And he’s just so damn handsome. Real hot commodity!

Those gunning for him; those gaming for him. Didn’t matter. He wouldn’t be thrown off course. The man had a mission.

And his wife? Somewhat like…a hundred gradations of pink, maybe? She’d come upon a way to intensify the existing intensity between them. Witty, adventurous, creative, and simply gorgeous. She was at the top of her game, too.

With so many challenges, how does this all pan out? How did he weave through waves of deception? What kept him grounded through it all? His wife helped. With that ‘feminine wiles’ thing, she took care of business. It’s all made crystal clear by the things people do… and don’t.

This was a book about a lot of things. Clearly, the author has a real interest in HMO’s and managed healthcare, and this story follows Alonzo, the super lawyer who basically saves the firm.

While the book covers a lot of healthcare law brainstorming, it also comes with:
-Anti-LGBTQIA+ bias (I truly mean this; it had extremely offensive sections and themes);
-Christian lens and bias;
-dialogue that was repetitive and tedious;
-characters who were totally unhinged;
-a complete disrespect for sex workers;
-multiple uses of Yiddish slang without a Jewish character in sight;
-referring to anything Kama Sutra-related as sinning (even between spouses);
-and for a book that claims to be about lust (etc etc), it was door completely shut/can’t even refer to anatomically correct body parts by their names.

I wouldn’t recommend this read, unfortunately.

Thanks to NetGalley for a review copy.

Edit: 3/1/23: the author has now reached out to me and does not like this review. She has asked me to remove it, and has threatened to get it taken down. Unfortunately, this was an honest review and I review books with integrity. Just because an author doesn’t like my review is no reason to remove it. Readers should know what they’re getting into if they choose to read reviews prior to reading. (And yes, I have receipts).

Healthcare Homage HIts Home

ACED is a solid, hearty read with plenty of twists and turns for our protagonist, health insurance guru and resident Adonis, Alonzo Prier to negotiate. While appearing almost too perfect at times, Alonzo meets every situation head-on with the confidence and flair reminiscent of Mad Men’s Don Draper. Shea Rose’s knowledge of the US healthcare system shines through, so much so that I was left looking for the “yes” box to check for universal healthcare. Such as these are the times we live in.

It’s a busy story with multiple story lines, many intersecting to the reader’s delight. The author’s deft pacing keeps the pages turning as we hop-scotch through plot points in the crackling atmosphere of the nine-to-five office setting of Branston & Emers. Numerous portfolios come into play.

Full marks for five-star story telling that takes nary a coffee break, culminating in this rewarding sequel / standalone. Bravo!

Interesting read

The plot is engaging, and the moral and ethical dilemma that the MC face are credible, maybe too realistic for my escapist pursuit of reading a novel. But maybe that's just me. The detailed exploration of the world of medical insurance was eye-opening.
