A POLICE PROCEDURAL THAT WILL KEEP YOU GUESSING UNTIL THE END!
Solving a murder across jurisdictional lines requires cooperation. It’s too bad these detectives don’t play well with others.
A shooting at an illegal after-hours club sends Spokane County Detective Shane McAfee and his partner searching for a murderer. There are no witnesses, and the evidence is thin, but McAfee is determined to catch this killer.
Their search takes them into the backyard of the Spokane Police Department, where a similar shooting has occurred. Soon they’re fighting with their SPD counterparts for information that could help solve their case.
With a rising body count, will departmental politics and jurisdictional backbiting allow a predator to go free? Or can McAfee bring everyone together so they can catch a murderer?

ADDITIONAL SERIES BY COLIN CONWAY The John Cutler Mysteries – hard-hitting private detective stories The Flip-Flop Detective – light-hearted amateur sleuth mysteries The Cozy Up series – not your grandma’s cozies The Charlie-316 series – political/criminal thrillers The 509 Crime Stories – fast-paced police procedurals
Colin Conway is the creator of the 509 Crime Stories, a series of novels set in Eastern Washington with revolving lead characters. They are standalone tales and can be read in any order.
He also created the Cozy Up series which pushes the envelope of the cozy genre. Libby Klein, author of the Poppy McAllister series, says Cozy Up to Death is “Not your grandma’s cozy.”
Colin co-authored the Charlie-316 series. The first novel in the series, Charlie-316, is a political/crime thriller that has been described as “riveting and compulsively readable,” “the real deal,” and “the ultimate ride-along.”
He served in the U.S. Army and later was an officer of the Spokane Police Department. He's owned a laundromat, invested in a bar, and ran a karate school. Besides writing crime fiction, he is a commercial real estate broker.
Colin lives with his beautiful girlfriend, three wonderful children, and a codependent Vizsla that rules their world.
Another 509 story, with several of my favorite characters making appearances. The banter between city and county....and between Morgan and, well, everyone, is one of my favorite elements of the 509 series. This installment to the series deals with what goes on AFTER the clubs close. It's fast paced & gives you insight to the camaraderie, or lack of, in the various departments of law enforcement. This book gets a high recommendation from me, as the entire 509 series does. A must read!
This book will have you reading long after “lights out” It is a compelling page turner with diverse characterisations and a great ‘twisty-turny “ plot line!
Call out of a mass murder, so he would be working or rather trying to work with the other detective. It happened after hours, no witness, and body count is going up. The plot, the characters in this series are great. Always looking for the next one. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
This is a great mystery and suspense read. It is a read about multiple murders in illegal after hours clubs. It’s great to read how detectives from the city and county level have to come together to solve each of the murders. I loved all the characters in this book and I loved learning how each department in an investigation works. I hope to read more of Conway’s books.
I received this novel through ARC. This is my review. I think I've read everything that Colin Conway has written and I'm never disappointed! A fast paced, easy to follow, interesting read and great character development. A surprising ending! Looking forward to the next great novel!
The After-Hours War by Colin Conway A 509 Crime Story #10
Interesting and intriguing look at how the police from different teams working independently on segments of an overlapping case managed to eventually take down the criminals.
What I liked: * That the story was told in four parts and at the beginning of each section the police assigned to the murder scene or would be involved in working to find the bad guys were introduced * The plot, pacing, and writing * That the characters were well developed, and I felt I knew them * Learning what an after-hour bar/speakeasy type establishment was * The police procedural aspects of the story * Seeing how personal feelings impacted interaction between the police working the case * How all the pieces were slowly gathered to create the overall picture of who was killing people and what their motivation was * That everything was clear and the bad guys caught by the end of the story
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * Knowing that the mentality behind the murders in this story are all too real in this world
Thank you to the author for the ARC – this is my honest review.
This was my first 509 book. It was excellent! Colin Conway’s writing style and voice is perfect for the genre.
I enjoyed the multi points of view from the teams of detectives and officers solving the crimes as well as the competitive desire to be the team to bring an arrest.
The premise of after-hour joints was intriguing and very believable as presented.
I found myself wondering about the title….was it intended to represent the crime or the competition between the different law enforcement jurisdictions. I’m still undecided.
