Rate this book
Being happy both at home and at work means we're not just cheerier, but more clear-eyed and effective at what we do. But happiness takes practice and ongoing contemplation. In this inventive new book—part professional development resource, part personal journal—educator, author, and podcaster Suzanne Dailey contends that small shifts bring big gifts : that is, small positive changes, practiced over time, will help you feel more balanced, content, and aligned. To help you on this path, Dailey provides 40 readings and reflections, aligned to the weeks of the school year and designed to ensure that you glean joy and insight from every moment inside and outside the classroom. In these pages, you'll find * Reflection activities for assessing the health of your relationships—not only with coworkers and students, but also with family and friends.
* Inspiring stories about educators who have sought and found ways to improve their practice by following the tenets of positive psychology.
* Weekly goals for shifting your thinking and developing more positive habits of mind.
* "Report cards" for assessing your progress on the book's challenges and goals.
* Minilessons you can use to share your new learning with students and influence classroom culture and community. Steeped in the teachings of positive psychology and fired up with a passion for teaching, Dailey mines both her own experiences and the insights of psychological thought leaders to provide this indispensable resource for educators at all levels.

I first saw this book as an ASCD webinar and after listening to her small shifts in perception, attitude and actions I instantly wanted to know more. I order the book which is designed to be read in small weekly increments comparable to a school year calendar. I could not stop reading. It includes stories, personal accounts and also lets you know that it is written by someone who deal with many of the same stresses, struggles and challenges as I know I do and I am sure you do as well. She even lets you know that. This book is grounded on research and life experience. Don't keep thinking about getting this book, get it. No matter where you are in your school year, it will help. It also gives you ideas to use in your personal life as a parent, a caregiver, and a friend. It is solid, it is doable and it is inspiring. She also has a podcast that takes it in tiny 5 minute chunks of time, who doesn't have 5 minutes. The book is written in the same way, small bit of information, framed in stories with suggested small shifts to implement one week at a time. This is definitely worth the time. You are worth the time!! Even if you are not a teacher, as a trainer or a team member, as a parent, this will be helpful. Take the time and read this book!!
