4.5 ⭐️ rounded up Talk about a steamy, sporty romance 🌶️ 🏒
Speed Skating is the 2nd book I’ve read by Abby Burch but I’ve got to say - it’s now my favorite! It’s fast paced and an easy read that follows Nils and Morgan.
Nils plays for the Chicago Velocity hockey team where he is teammates with Morgan’s brother, Patrick. Morgan has always been told to steer clear of the hockey guys, but when her and Nils connect one night over cocktails, the two find themselves desperate to “hang out” time and time again - all while hiding it from Patrick.
Speed Skating packs a punch in such a short book, featuring some of my favorite tropes like: — brother’s teammate — forbidden romance
As I mentioned before, this is an easy and quick read, but it does have great spice and all the feels. I really loved Nils’ character. My one complaint is that I wish it was longer!
PS - I’m crossing my fingers for a Matus book next 🤭
Thank you Abby for this eARC in exchange for my honest review!!
The only complaint I have here is that this book wasn’t long enough! I could have taken another couple hundred pages of Morgan and Nils!!
I loved how quickly Morgan and Nils connected, but that their relationship was so deep. They spent a lot of time just hanging out and getting to know each other, not just the physical (although that was there too!). They seem like a great match right away, just so comfortable around each other.
As with Lighting the Lamp, Abby has created characters with such depth, and makes them feel so real and relatable. I love the representation of mental health in this book through Nils’s battle with depression, as well as how gently the author handles the issue of grief with Morgan and Pat’s father having passed away.
I also adore Patrick’s overprotective brother attitude and how close he and Morgan are. I would have expected nothing different in his response to the conflict at the end, but he also was humble enough to apologize. Their bond is so strong! He seems like an amazing big brother!
All around just love this book and can’t wait for more!!
Tropes/themes: -Forbidden relationship -Brother’s teammate -Spicy (two in public) -Dual POV -Quick read/ short chapters
This one had a bit of a slower start for me, but I really felt invested in the characters and their relationship around half way through! I would’ve loved a little more tension/ passion a bit earlier on, but once these two gave into their desires you knew they’d be instoppable. The spice was great (I’m a sucker for a public hookup) and MMC Nils was so sweet and swoony. So grateful to be chosen for this arc! I’ll definitely be looking into Abby Burch’s other book and waiting to see what else she comes up with!
What a wild and fast ride that I went on in Speed Skating!
Morgan and Nils were not looking for anything special when she asked him to help her with a project, but Nils decided to take her on an adventure with an adrenaline rush. They lit the pages on fire with their chemistry that turned into so much more. Even when you think the impossible can't happen, just hang on for the ride and never give up.
If you love hockey romance, friends to lovers, brother's best friend, then you don't want to miss out on this book!
I was lucky enough to get an ARC of the second Chicago Velocity book! This story was very sweet and while it touched upon a few deeper issues like grief and mental health, it stayed far into the lane of fluff.
Reasons I Recommend:
1) Hockey romance with goofy players and a reminder of the dangers of the game
2) Returning characters like Brenna and Ryan (even less of a Carly fan than before) and
3) Seeing Morgan fall for Nils was super sweet even if the overprotective big brother was a bit much (Patrick needs to get a life LOL).
PS — I think he might be getting one in what I hope is his fake relationship/non fake relationship in another book? Hint hint, nudge nudge
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
4.5/5 ⭐️
Brief synopsis: It follows the story of Morgan and Nils as all of a sudden sparks start flying between them even though they have know each other for a few years. But there is one problem, Morgan is his teammates sister which makes her forbidden and as feelings start to surface a secret relationship starts brewing between them. But as feeling get more strong do they really have what it takes to make this relationship work? Read Speed Skating to find out more about their relationship.
Review: Speed Skating by Abby Burch it is the second book in the Chicago Velocity series. It was a really quick, fun, full of secrets, spicy book. This is a hockey forbidden friend/teammate’s sister book and is told from Morgan’s and Nils POV’s. Their relationship was super cute and spicy, I loved how they couldn’t resist each other, how they helped each other and were there for each other. Also how they had so many things in common. I loved Morgan’s and Patrick’s sibling relationship even though he was really protective of her. I loved to see glimpses of the first book couple in this book and see where they are with their relationship. I seriously can’t wait to continue this series since I devoured this book and the first one. I absolutely recommend it if you are looking for a good hockey forbidden romance book.
The only thing I didn’t like was how quick everything was in their relationship and with some themes and situations I tough deserved more development. But I really enjoyed the book a lot and can’t wait to continue this series!
Speed Skating, by Abby Burch, is the second book in the Chicago Velocity stand alone series.
Speed. It's what I crave and it's what I do. I lace up my skates or hop on my motorcycle and keep searching for that next adrenaline rush. I'm used to hopping from one girl to the next just as fast. What can I say? I like a quick and easy hookup with no strings.
No one has ever made me want to come back for more until Morgan. She's supposed to be off-limits -- her brother, Patrick, is the team captain. And he doesn't hesitate to go after any guy who so much as looks at her. But we've already crossed the line and there's no going back.
She's risking her relationship with her brother and I'm potentially risking my place on the team. What Patrick doesn't know can't hurt him, right?
I was honored to get an early ARC of Speed Skating. Reading this book both before and after final edits was amazing. I loved seeing Burch grow as an author from her first to second book. I also loved that her hockey knowledge shone through again.
Each relationship whether it was family, friendship, or love, was natural and authentic. Morgan and Nils had a genuine connection even when Nils mental health came to light, which I greatly respected. Patrick and Morgan had mutual respect and protectiveness that you want siblings to have.
I appreciated the length and of this book because it allowed the sense of care to come through. Burch refrained from added fluff and just let the story and spice speak for itself.
Once you’ve finished Speed Skating don’t fret because there are still thee more to come!
This is book 2 in the Chicago Velocity Series. I have really enjoyed both books and they are quick reads about hockey players, my dream books!
This book follows Nils and Morgan. Morgan is the little sister of the team captain for the Velocity, Patrick. Patrick is extremely protective of Morgan after the loss of their father and scares away any man that is interested in her. Nils is one of the velocity players and really good friends with Patrick.
Morgan and Nils are friendly with each other so when she asks for his help with a project, he agrees. Spending time together leads them to feeling things for each other. Morgan has a rule not to date/sleep with hockey players and Nils needs to stay far away from his captain/friend's little sister.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the relationship between Nils and Morgan, they didn't want to feel anything for each other but they did. I liked the relationship between Morgan and Patrick, even though Patrick was quite a bit overbearing. I really liked the friendships between the teammates as well. I can definitely see a few more books in this series in the future.
Abby also tackles mental health in her books and I like the way she portrays it with such care and this book is no different. There is talk of depression and grief, but again both are handled with care.
Read this if you like: *hockey romance *friends to lovers *friends little sister *forbidden romance *mental health representation
Thank you to Abby Burch for an ARC of this book. I can't wait to read more from these characters!
Welcome back to another instalment of what hockey romance has Abbey read this week. So let me introduce you to Speed Skating. This is book 2 in the Chicago Velocity series and I’m so glad to be back.
Morgan’s brother Patrick is captain of the Chicago Velocity Hockey Team. He’s super over protective and the reason that Morgan doesn’t date hockey players, especially if they’re on the team. When Nils agrees to be her Guinea Pig as she tests out new drinks for the pub, she didn’t expect this quiet man ignite the passion she keeps hidden.
This was a super sweet & spicy, quick read that ticked a lot of boxes. I loved the dynamic between the two main characters and the overarching storyline. Abby again handled tough subjects with the respect they deserved.
Also, shout out to Abby, your writing has had such a glow up between books and you should be super proud of yourself. The characters and storytelling had much more depth, you can truly see that you’ve worked hard at your craft.
Thank you so much for an ARC copy, looking forward to returning to the team in the future.
If you love the below, you’ll love this book:
🏒 found family 🏒 forbidden love 🏒 hockey romance 🏒 quick read 🏒 mental health reputation
Speed Skating is book 2 in the Chicago Velocity series.
Nils Larsson is a hockey player, who plays for the Chicago Velocity team. Morgan Huff is a bartender and the sister of the Chicago Velocity’s captain. Morgan has been told to not get with any hockey players, but when she and Nils connect over some drinks, they began wanting to be more than friends.
This is the first book of Abby Burch’s I’ve read and I really enjoyed this book. I loved Morgan and Nils and their journey. I will say I felt like the book was a tad bit too short, like there wasn’t much conflict between the couple. The book talked a bit about mental health, but it was mostly in the fluff lane. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves hockey romances. So if you are looking for a fast-paced, sweet romance, this book is for you. I love how Nils called Morgan “my dear,” but in his native language. We love how the MMCs give their women foreign nicknames 😍.
Main tropes: -brother’s teammate -forbidden romance
Once again, another quick and easy read alongside the sweetest love story. Brother’s best friend is one of my all time favorite tropes and this book 100% delivered a story that provided everything I love about the trope. Nils and Morgan’s relationship was precious and I will forever sing praises of a romance in which the MMC fully sees the FMC because that’s what everyone wants in a partner, and that’s exactly who Nils was for Morgan. I loved that despite Morgan not wanting to fall in love with a hockey player, she couldn’t resist falling for Nils and their relationship was honestly pretty inevitable. This story was quick and sweet, and I loved that the characters and storylines from the previous book continued into this one. I’m hoping for more books in this series as I’ve become fully invested in the lives of the Chicago Velocity players 😂.
I was given an ARC by the author. All opinions are my own.
Read if you like: 🏒Hockey Romance 🏒Forbidden Love 🏒Found Family 🏒Dual POV 🏒Brother’s Teammate
TW: Grief and Mental Health
I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this phenomenal book!
I loved how quickly Nils and Morgan’s relationship blossomed. They were around each other a lot and really got to know each other on a deeper level and not just physically 🥵.
My only complaint would be that it needed to be longer! I needed more Nils and Morgan they are so perfect!
Another thing I loved in this book was how protective Patrick was over his sister Morgan. There is a conflict at then end that I could 100% see him doing, but still is a great brother that apologized. He might not like the situation now but I bet it will grow on him!
I would definitely recommend this book and also the first book Lighting The Lamp!
Grab this book on February 28th, you won’t regret it!
Speed Skating is the second book in the Chicago Velocity series. I was looking forward to Morgan's story after reading Lighting the Lamp, and I'm so happy she got to have her own book.
Morgan and Nils are the main characters in this quick, hockey romance. He is your dreamy, blonde haired Swede *cough* William Karlsson *cough* and she's your forbidden Captain's sister. She doesn't date hockey players and he just doesn't date. I loved their drama free encounters and enjoyed watching their friends to lovers relationship blossom. They were both super sweet to each other.
You can tell Abby has an extensive knowledge with hockey given all her details, which as a hockey fan, is much appreciated. I felt like I was reading a potential real-life story based on a couple real of life hockey players. In Speed Skating, we get an almost behind the scenes view of what hockey players really do have to deal with; moving to a new country, injuries, career ending injuries, mental health, traveling, and friendships/made families you develop.
Is Patrick's book next?
TROPES: - Best Friends Sister - Hockey Romance - Friends to Lovers - Forbidden Romance
*ARC review. I was given an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a Off Limits, Sport Romance and captains sister Trope. Morgan has been under her brothers protection since she had moved in 3 yrs ago after a tragedy in their life. But Patrick being the teams caption Ice Hockey players were off limits. She hardly had a date because of him and the guys are too scared to approach her.
Nils is a Swedish guy that plays for Chicago Velocity, where Patrick is the captain.
They are all really good friends and Morgan gets along with them all.
Randomly they become close and more becomes of the friendship. It was beautiful gradual progress and not just an instant attraction. I loved how they both became the best version of themselves around each other.
Their journey wasn't easy and when Patrick finds out...... Yeah read and find out.
The secondary characters were so lovable too. They're one big family and you feel the warmth through the pages. Brenna and Ryan were also there and was great to see things are going the right way for them.
This book had, so many emotional moments, drama on and off the rink, humour and Steamy scenes.
A forbidden sports romance… do I need to say anymore?
This series continues with another amazing book filled with instant attraction and cute characters that have you feeling warm and gooey inside.
While this book is very light and cutesy it does talk about serious topics such as mental health. The author did a good job of highlighting the importance but not making this book feel dark and heavy.
The two main characters were a treat to read, I adored Morgan and her overprotective brother! Nils was such and amazing mmc, he was literally written for Morgan and was so attentive it was cute af.
An overall amazing read that I would recommend to any sports romance lover.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a quick hockey romance with a forbidden/off limits relationship between Morgan and her brother’s friend/teammate Nils. I wasn’t a huge fan of Nils in the beginning (I never like when the H tries to use other women as a means to forget about the h before they’re together), not that he did anything wrong it’s just a personal preference, but the more their friendship developed the more I fell for him too! Morgan grew on me too, I don’t want to give much away, but her character developed exactly how I hoped she would.
I hope we get more about the Chicago Velocity boys! I will be holding out for a book about both Patrick and Matus someday!♥️

-Brothers best friend -forbidden romance -hockey -mental health
I am loving this series so much! This is book two in the Chicago Velocity series. It can be read as a standalone. I absolutely loved that there was descriptions of the games and what was going on during. It brought another layer of depth to the hockey romance that’s usually missing.
Morgan and Nils were so perfect for each other. I liked how they both kind of brought out different things in each other and how for both of them they realized they were missing something. Nils mental health and depression was done well.
The players on the team are amazing, they are silly and their own family. I can not wait to read more.
I love the characters and the relationships Abby creates in her books. Morgan and Nils are lovable, genuine, deep, relatable characters. I especially love that Morgan is also a strong and determined woman.
I don’t want to give any spoilers but I absolutely love that moment when there’s the speech about their true feelings. I was an emotional, swooning, feel good mess. I’m a sucker for motorcycles and enjoy riding. So having that as part of Nils’s life and how it ties into the story was great. I could relate to all those feelings/moments.
This is book 2 in the Chicago Velocity series; it is a standalone. And it’s another awesome read. Once I started reading this book I couldn’t put it down.
A feel good hockey romance. Nils lives for speed, if it's not on the ice playing hockey, it's riding his motorcycle. He also likes women...but prefers no strings.
Morgan is the sister of an NHL player, she is still trying to find herself...but in the mean time she is bartending and volunteering for the Chicago Velocity. At a fundraising event she is paired with Nils, one of her brother's teammates, they've talked before but when Nils helps her and they make contact...there are sparks.
Abby effortlessly discusses some hard topics, grief being a big one. Morgan is still navigating the loss of her father, but whenever she see's a Cardinal she feels him. Another topic that comes up is mental health, Nils has been navigating life with depression, he has is go to coping mechanisms and his village, both which help him daily. The strongest message that shines through is it's okay to not be okay.
I am very much invested in the Chicago Velocity...I'll just be over hypothesizing what happens with Patrick and Matus.
It was great to see Morgan stand up for the life and love she wants. Instead of doing things to please others. And all the support she has around her- in the team, friendships and the bar.
I enjoyed Nils POV. The hardships he and the team experience during the season were devastating but glad he had found a family within the hockey team and community. It is a beautiful thing.
I’m glad they both knew what they wanted and weren’t afraid to go after it. Seeing Patrick accept that relationship as well was golden.
I loved everything about this book! (Except for Carly🤣)
I loved that it had the characters from the previous book (Lighting The Lamp) I loved how it showed the progression of Nils & Morgan’s relationship from both POV’s (dual POV is my favourite). I loved how all Patrick wanted to do was protect his sister and be the ‘father figure’.
Forbidden romance/brothers best friend are two of my favourite tropes so this book was perfect for me🙈
Again, thank you so much Abby for letting me an ARC reader for this, I really appreciate it. (All opinions are my own)
Morgan and Nils are taking a chance. She doesn’t want to date a hockey player. Not to mention a hockey player who is in the same team as her brother. Nils is the newest addition to their team and already knows that no on touches their captain’s sister. But as one thing leads to another they can’t keep their hands off of each other. ”Speed skating” is a cute and fast story about choosing yourself for once in your life over others. There’s drama and sex, love and disappointment. This is the second standalone novel in the Chicago Velocity hockey romance series. Release date February 28th ARC review.
I am thoroughly honored to have received a copy of Abby’s ARC for Speed Skating. This one is just as fantastic as the first one. I need more Chicago Velocity books!
This is a great dual POV HEA. Brother’s friend tropes are my favorites, and Nils and Morgan’s story did not disappoint. What they have with each other puts both of their relationships with Patrick, Morgan’s brother and Nils’ team captain. But is it worth the risk? Sports romance are also a favorite of mine. Abby’s obvious knowledge of hockey makes this series extremely enjoyable for a sports nut like me.
Trust me when I say, check out this series. You will not be disappointed.
I read Lighting the Lamp last year when I was binging hockey romances and I was so excited to learn it was the first in a series. And Speed Skating was a great sequel!
Morgan and Nils are adorable and perfect, and I absolutely loved them. Morgan's older, protective brother is the captain of the Velocity and is very against her dating his teammates. But Nils and Morgan have incredible chemistry that they can't ignore, so they take the chance and date in secret. There's plenty of spice and laughs in this book, and some moments that will tug your heartstrings. I can't wait to see which character gets a book next and to watch these hockey players fall in love!
This was my first read by Abby, and I’m excited to read more! Hockey Romance is a fav of mine! This book was cute, sweet, and the locker scene has me blushing 😉
I have to start by saying that I loved how the title was slipped into the book. Very clever! Gimmie a motorcycle riding, dreamy hockey player any day! Morgan’s and Nils relationship made sense why they hid it, but I’m glad how it played out and was done maturely like it should be with their ages. I’m really hoping Patrick gets the next book! Thank you for the ARC 💕
This is a very cute story. Nils and Morgan are great together. Morgan deals with an overprotective brother while Nils deals with mental health issues like depression. Even though said issues aren’t targeted in deep, I love when a book brings the subject to recognition. Great job Abby. Can’t wait to read Pat’s story!!! Thank you for the review copy! I loved it!
I really enjoyed this sweet story with a HEA. Lots of hockey & spice in unexpected places. I would definitely recommend you grab this book when it is released on 2/28 for a feel good, swoon worthy read.
I read Ryan and Brennas story and it was cute but I love me a good forbidden romance and I loved it! Morgan and nils hit that spot. They had a spark from the beginning and I loved nils Sweden nickname for Morgan.. nils had that quiet guy down but a spicy little devil on the side 🥵🥵🥵 I can’t wait for book three in the series
I had the privilege of doing the alpha edits on this book with Abby. RUN to KU for this one. A hockey romance with actual hockey knowledge, "good girl", brothers best friend, forbidden romance - and not just chemistry between the FMC and MC, there are authentic connections/friendships among the whole friend group. Mental health representation done right. Personalities are at the forefront and memorable. The Velocity gang is fantastic in every way. I CANNOT recommend this enough to fans of a swoon-worthy HEA with spiceeeee.
I was blessed and honored to be allowed to do an ARC review on this book. I enjoyed everything about this book!! It encompasses 3 of my favorite things, reading, love, and 🏒!! You can never go wrong when these 3 come together! What a fabulous story! I also love the fact that it's the second book in a series and can also be read as a stand alone!!
