Bruce Scott, CPA (Colorado), MBA (Finance), FCA, FCCA, is an international personal finance specialist, a certified public accountant (Colorado), a chartered accountant (Jamaica), a chartered certified accountant (UK) and creator of the online course 14 Steps to Financial Freedom.
Bruce Scott is the territory leader (senior partner) at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Jamaica, a member firm of PwC International Limited, one of the largest professional services networks in the world.
His vast knowledge of money management and his strong belief that financial intelligence leads to financial independence have led him to coaching clients one-on-one on strategies and behavioral changes required to pursue a path of financial freedom and resulted in the development of his 14 Steps to Financial Freedom course, available online and in person.
Born into poverty, Bruce grew up with a strong ambition to educate himself. He became one of the youngest persons ever to qualify as a chartered accountant in the Caribbean at 21 years old and one of the youngest partners in the history of PwC Jamaica at age 32. His excellence in the field of accounting was featured in the 2014 book Profile of Excellence: Strategies for Extraordinary Achievement from 25 Years of Interviewing Remarkable People by Ian Boyne and Glenford Smith.
Bruce currently serves on three boards, two of which are not-for-profit entities. He is a member of three professional accounting bodies i.e. the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica (ICAJ) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). He is a former president of the ICAJ and former board member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Caribbean (ICAC).
A dedicated Christian, Bruce likes to share his faith, especially in a cross-cultural setting. He and his wife, Suzette, have three sons, John, Justin, and Jared. Bruce plays golf as well as football (soccer for the Americans) with his youngest son—and is a budding piano player.
The book, 14 Steps to Financial Freedom, is a valuable resource for adults and full-time students in secondary and tertiary institutions who may be desirous of navigating out of their financial debt and/or becoming more financially intelligent. The use of real-life experiences enlightens the audience and makes the reading interesting. The general tone and language are conversational and use of layman’s terms makes it easy for the reader to understand the content and ultimately facilitates comprehension. Additionally, the content is realistic and readers can relate to the information provided on financial management. The text will help persons to understand how to manage their money with their personal GPS, garnered from the House of Financial Freedom.
You won't walk away as a financial expert, but if you need to start learning, fill in some gaps, or update your knowledge, this book could be a good place to start. It provides a good overview of several essential areas.
There are some Bible verses throughout that could be distracting to some; I did not find them distracting as they were woven well into the content and were complementary to the material. As someone in the US, the information about Jamaica was an interesting reference point in some cases and distracting in others.
Overall, I think there is a lot of value in the high-level overview of information, the specific goals and exercises at the end of each section, and the resources in the footnotes that allow you to dig deeper into specific topics that interest you.
It is of the utmost importance in this day and age to take steps towards financial freedom. It is never too late to start. Where do we start if we are uncertain of the steps to take? Bruce Scott’s “14 Steps to Financial Freedom” is a guide to assist both young and old who are interested in taking that pivotal journey towards their financial freedom. Several diagrams along with statistics and examples were included to support the author’s philosophies . Personal examples along with assignments were even mentioned which helped to engage the reader. Personal favourites included those examples which are based on Biblical principles.

Mr. Scott's book contains important information that I wish was accessible to me as a young woman. The material was practical and explained quite well. As an American, I did sometimes get confused when Mr. Scott explained information relevant to the Bahamas but I understood the context.
I especially appreciated the chapters on investing your money, and the breakdown of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc. I hope Mr. Scott would consider writing a companion workbook or even a curriculum that could be taught at the high school level.
I received an advanced copy of the book for an honest review.
This book is straight forward on the content of financial freedom. This book has an easy step by step guide that is easy to understand. The style, content, and advice given in this book is excellent. A must read for any and all who want financial freedom.
