Fourteen-year -old Nick Williams attends a boys’ school in England. He has a good alto voice and is asked to sing a female role in the chorus when the school puts on a production of HMS Pinafore. The older girl who lives next door, Samantha, gives him some help with his costume, but then dares him to do something extraordinary. Nick decides to take up the challenge
A sensitively told story of a young teenager exploring his gender identity
A found this a lovely read. It is sensitively told and explores Nicky’s feeling about dressing as a girl and being treated like one. He has loving friends who do not judge him be accept him for who he is.
A pleasant read, well written for the most part and with a high level of verisimilitude, but loses at least one star, possibly two, for the errant punctuation and the presentation of dialogue: the use of long form makes the characters' speech come across as extremely formal (at times, it's almost as though they're characters in a period piece). Some judicious copy-editing would have made this a very good book.
