The year is 1995. Hugo Duchamp’s life is in turmoil. Bullied at school, abandoned by his parents and living in the attic belonging to his rigid grandmother, the future appears bleak. And then everything changes. Over a long hot summer, for the first time, Hugo falls in love with both a person and what will become the other passion in his life, the righting of wrongs. But it comes at a price and he finds himself in mortal danger. He must fight for his survival and for those he loves.
The first in a trilogy of prequels to the ‘Hugo Duchamp Investigates’ series of books.
Fantastic plot with wonderful characters ... I was hooked from page one and nothing (not the French vocabulary scattered throughout the dialogue, no romance or on-screen sex - the MC is aged 14 after all) hindered what turned out to be a complete read-through in one sitting. Set in the 1990s, this origin story trilogy for MC Hugo provided much backstory to what "maketh-the-man" for the sleuthing powerhouse featured in the author's Hugo Duchamp Investigates books (which I'm so ready to start in a couple of months time). The historical murder and the subsequent killing plot was riveting and Madeline Duchamp is my most favorite character being given the best lines (IMO). 4.5 stars.
Another wonderful book by G N Hetherington. I feel the characters are my friends, so learning about their childhood gives me an insight as to why they have become who they are. I loved this book and didn’t want it to end! Couldn’t put it down. Would definitely recommend.
