About the author

Robert Eastaway is an author who is active in the popularisation of mathematics. He is a former pupil of The King's School, Chester, England and has a degree in Engineering and Management Science from the University of Cambridge. He was President of the UK Mathematical Association for 2007/2008. Eastaway is a keen cricket player and was one of the originators of the International Rankings of Cricketers. He is also a former puzzle-writer for the New Scientist magazine and he has been involved in live mathematics shows on Virgin Radio (now Absolute Radio). He is the Director of Maths Inspiration, a national programme of maths lectures for teenagers which involves some of the UK’s leading maths speakers such as Simon Singh and Colin Wright.

Robert Eastaway's titles appear under the name "Rob Eastaway" in the UK and some other countries.

This book follows this structure:
1. State an interesting problem that most people can relate to.
2. State the mathematical glimpse that can solve said problem.
3. Move to the next problem without delving into the math.

I am comfortable with reading advanced math. So for me this book barely caresses the surface of math let alone scratches it.

I knew that the 7 days of the week were named for gods, and I might have even known about the "7 days for the 7 planets" (of which the Earth isn't, and the sun and moon are), but if I had ever seen the explaination of how each day ended up with its name I certainly hadn't remembered it (until now)! And some of the examples in "How Do Conmen Get Rich?" really made me stop and think (in particular: Predicting the sex of your baby and The football con).

The sub-titular purpose of How Long is a Piece of String? is to reveal mathematics underlying every day life. As a holder of a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics I didn't find it terribly revealing in that regard (having already known it), but I think that it did a very good job of explaining the kinds of problems that various fields of math (or, since the authors are British, perhaps I should say "in maths") work on. In that respect, I think that this would be an excellent read for a college student who is a fan of math, but isn't sure what field they want to pursue.

If "Should I Phone a Friend?" spoke to you, you probably want Discrete Math or Economics.
If "How Long Is a Piece of String?" was the most fascinating, you want to study fractals.
If "Why Do Weather Forecasters Get it Wrong?" was titillating, Chaos Theory, or Cryptography.
(And most of the other chapters have an implied focus, as well, talk to your advisor/favorite math professor/head of the math department to see what your favorite implies)

If you're not mathematically inclined, but like to know what makes the world around you tick, you'll also probably find it an interesting read.

Vì cái tựa đề của mỗi chương là một câu hỏi nên mình hy vọng rằng nội dung của nó chí ít cũng làm sáng tỏ câu hỏi đó (nhưng thực ra nội dung chính lại là cái câu in nghiêng bên dưới, và đọc xong chương 1 là thấy há hốc rồi), đa phần là tác giả đưa ra tình huống rồi sau đó chèn một số kiến thức toán rồi lại đẩy nội dung sang một câu chuyện khác, rồi càng đi càng xa. Đến khi kết thúc chương thì ngớ người vì không nhận ra mình vừa đọc cái gì luôn. Cần sắp xếp nội dung cũng như đặt lại tên chương cho rõ.

Có lẽ mình đọc quyển này sau Nếu... thì? nên mình kỳ vọng rằng phần nội dung cũng như hình ảnh minh họa nó nhiều "toán học" hơn một tí, thú vị hơn một tí... có lẽ là không như ý rồi.

Dốt toán thì không thể chối cãi được. Chắc là cũng giống đa số độc giả, đọc quyển này xong mình mới chú ý hơn về những ứng dụng thực tiễn của toán học trong cuộc sống thường ngày. Cách chia các chương để nói về những ứng dụng của toán trong các lĩnh vực khác nhau khiến cho việc đọc dễ dàng hơn, vì ít nhất không hiểu phần này thì có thể nhảy sang phần khác mà đọc, hoặc có thể chọn chủ đề mình thích mà ngấu nghiến.

Thật sự thì mình thích quyển sách vì những kiến thức nó khơi gợi cho mình hơn là cách dẫn dắt hay cách giải thích. Chắc là đây là một cuốn toán học thường thức nên mình hơi mong chờ giọng văn hấp dẫn hơn chăng? Vì cuốn này không có ý định đào sâu vào toán thuần túy hay là những thứ trừu tượng khó hiểu, phức tạp nên mình nghĩ những giải thích trong sách là vừa đủ, nhưng đôi lúc cũng hơi nhàm tí vì toàn đi đọc kết luận.

Cuối cùng thì mình thấy cuốn sách này ổn. Lúc nào đọc lại mà thấy hiểu hơn thì chắc sẽ có ý kiến khác.

If you have a couple of hours to spare and are intrigued by apparently simple problems that turn out to be more complex than they seem, then Rob Eastaway and Jeremy Wyndham’s book How Long Is A Piece Of String? would be an engaging way to fill the time. This is a carefully constructed book, with each of its sixteen chapters occupying about ten pages. There is just enough space to introduce an idea, pose a couple of questions and then deliver suitable solutions. The style is a little polemical, since there is not much space for the reader to investigate. But overall the material is well thought out and offers one or two surprising ideas. Each chapter poses a question. How Long Is a Piece Of String, Am I Being Taken For A Ride, What Makes A Hit Single, Is It A Fake are just a few examples. In Am I Being Taken For A Ride the authors explain the logic of the taxi fare. It’s ironic that as the chapters go by they themselves have something of the air of a driver eyeing the customer in the back with an associated, “And another thing…” The authors consider chance in game shows alongside how soon a drunk will fall into the ditch. Their analysis of how predictable sporting contests might be might itself also explain why I gave up watching tennis decades ago. They examine fractals and make a tree and then conclude that numbers quite often start with one. You may find this last revelation surprising. I did. All right, it’s populist stuff, but there is enough mathematics to keep the specialist interested for a couple of hours. The book is strangely but usefully illustrated and some of its explanations are extremely well presented. It’s undoubtedly a worthwhile read. Oh, and How Long Is A Piece OF String? Well, as Richard Feynman famously answered, it depends on the length of your ruler.

First book of the year, so yay ^_^
Một cuốn sách hay về những ứng dụng của toán học trong đời sống hàng ngày. Trước đây, mình đã từng trải nghiệm thứ toán học khô khan nhàm chán (ẩn dưới 2 chữ "trừu tượng"). Cuốn sách này gần gũi, đời thường và chắc chắn sẽ giúp chúng ta trả lời được câu hỏi: "Học toán để làm gì?"
Các chương sách được viết nội dung gần như tách biệt với nhau nên chúng ta hoàn toàn có thể bắt đầu đọc từ chương nào cũng được. Mọt số chương theo mình là khá khó đọc như chương về Hình phân dạng hay là chương về Tần số và âm nhạc, nhưng các chương nhìn chung đều được viết rất dễ hiểu và gây hứng thú, Hai chương mình thích nhất là về thang máy và cuộc thi "Ai là triệu phú?" bởi vì đó là 2 điều gắn bó với cuộc sống của mình nhưng mình không quá quan tâm đến nó.
Đọc xong rồi, lại quay về vơi Giải tích thực và Đại số tuyến tính, nhưng chắc chắn mình sẽ còn nhớ rất nhiều về những điều trong cuốn sách này, cũng như những câu hỏi mà mình còn thắc mắc khi đọc nó

Đây là một cuốn sách về toán học, không phải đạo hàm, tích phân hay bất kì công thức hay mệnh đề toán học nào khác. Mà đó là các hay, cái thực tế của toán học trong cuộc sống! Thoạt đầu mình cứ nghĩ đây là một cuốn sách gì đó mang hơi hướng của một cuốn về tình cảm như cái tên của nó. Nhưng đọc rồi mới biết là mình bị lừa giống như những người bị những trò lừa bịp bợm trong cuộc sống đánh lừa vậy, cuốn sách này mang lại cho mình những thông tin khá thú vị về các con số, những góc cạnh khác của cuộc sống thông qua lăng kính toán học. Về cơ bản cuốn sách mang lại cho mình những cảm giác thích thú nhất định!

Một quyển nói nhiều về toán nhưng tên sách thiệt là đánh lừa người đọc. Thực ra nó là tên một chương trong sách nhưng không phải toàn bộ nội dung sách. Mỗi chương trong sách là một lần dùng toán để giải thích một vấn đề trong cuộc sống. Đọc quyển này không cần theo thứ tự, có thể tìm đến chương mình thích và bỏ qua vài chương khó đọc.
Mình cực thích chương đầu giải thích về thứ hai đầu tuần, chương giải thích cách cách ly thì làm giảm dịch bệnh ra sao, cách làm thang máy di chuyển nhanh hơn, cách xếp hình tròn tối ưu, định luật benford.
Vẫn còn vài điểm hơi dài dòng thừa thãi, nhưng nhìn chung vẫn khá đáng đọc.

Đây là một quyển sách thú vị đối với mình, nó bao gồm những kiến thức về xác suất, thống kê, giản đồ sin được trình bày một cách hài hước và thú vị giúp ta tìm hiểu được những gì xảy ra quanh mình nhưng mình vẫn chưa thật sự hiểu rõ cơ chế bên trong đó như sự hình thành các ngày trong tuần, thần số học có thật sự đúng, chương trình truyền hình, hệ thống bán hàng đa cấp,... Đúng như những lời cuối của tác giả, có thêm những kiến thức toán học thật sự không chỉ giúp mình vượt qua các bài kiểm tra mà nó còn giúp mình có tư duy phân tích vấn đề, tránh bị lừa bởi mấy trick vặt vãnh.

This reads a lot like Horrible Histories but for maths and aimed at an older audience.

I know what I'm going to say is an odd sort of complaint, but I could have done with more book. What there is is gold, but I think they could have gone further into the maths without losing their audience.

That being said I appreciate the practical ways they suggest that a reader can do to to prove the maths in the book and the links to papers which go further into the maths.

Có vẻ khi dịch quyển sách này, người ta cố ý chọn một tiêu đề thật cuốn để khi���n người đọc tò mò mà mua nó. Nhưng sự thật là dòng chữ "Ứng dụng hữu ích của toán học trong đời sống" mới chính là nội dung quyển sách. Thật ra tiêu đề lớn chính là một mục nhỏ trong sách, ngay cả tiêu đề gốc của quyển sách " How long is a piece of string" cũng lấy trong các tiêu mục trong phần nội dung nốt. Mình đọc quyển sách này nhờ review của chị QHuong Bookspy, nếu không đọc review ấy mình cũng bị tiêu đề lớn kia đánh lừa về nội dung quyển sách. Vì muốn nối lại thiện cảm với toán học và sự tò mò muốn hiểu biết mà mình quyết định đọc.

Lúc còn đi học, mình thực sự không có nhiều say mê với môn Toán và cũng chẳng thấy có lý do gì để thích nó. Học toán để giải phương trình, biểu thức, đạt điểm tốt rồi lên lớp. Chỉ có vậy thôi. Vậy mà sau khi đọc quyển sách này, mình thật sự đã có cái nhìn và đánh giá khác về toán học. Vì toán học hầu như đều là cơ sở, khởi nguồn hay đơn giản là một yếu tố nhỏ tạo nên mọi thứ trong cuộc sống của chúng ta.

Quyển sách không nghiên cứu sâu xa hay giải thích các công thức, định lý toán học cao cấp mà tập trung nêu lên những điều thú vị toán học đã góp phần vào cuôc sống của chúng ta mà ta thường lơ đi hoặc không có kiến thức về nó. Chẳng hạn như việc tính toán để thi công các thang máy trong các toà nhà làm sao cho chúng vận hành hiệu quả và tiết kiệm thời gian, hay dịch bệnh lan truyền dựa trên cơ chế như thế nào và vai trò của các nhà dịch tể học, tại sao nói chỉ một cú đập cánh của con bướm có khả năng gây ra bão ở Florida… Đặc biệt tác giả còn nhấn mạnh việc hiểu biết về toán học giúp chúng ta không bị lừa đảo hay qua mặt bởi tài "xoáy" của các chính trị gia hay các phương tiện truyền thông.

Có vài chương với ví dụ hơi khó hiểu và chán vì (again) tác giả không thể giải thích sâu hơn vì nó nằm ngoài tiêu chí nghiên cứu của quyển sách nên mình chỉ đặc biệt nhớ và yêu thích những phần giải thích rõ ràng và dễ hiểu.

Sau cùng là thấy rất hữu ích và thu lượm được kha khá mớ kiến thức. Ít nhất là đối với một đứa gần như quên mặt toán học như mình. Nhưng lại có thêm động lực để hiểu và học toán!!

Visto il successo e l'eccellenza del volume precedente di questi due autori, era abbastanza prevedibile che la seconda puntata non sarebbe stata all'altezza dell'illustre precedente.
Detto questo, non si pu�� dire che questo libro sia mal riuscito: di nuovo con la formula usuale i due autori ci spiegano al matematica e la geometria nascosta dietro a fenomeni e comportamenti del tutto normali.
Il testo �� sempre comprensibile e la narrazione si muove bene sul filo di lama tra la semplicit�� necessaria per il livello divulgativo e la rigorosit�� matematica necessaria un testo comunque da carattere scientifico.

L'edizione �� quella usuale per la collana dell'editore Dedalo: copertina morbida lucida e carta bianchissima. La stampa �� in due colori e di ottima qualit��.

How long is a piece of string?
is the follow up to Why do buses come in threes? , which I also read recently and enjoyed. This book like the first one was really interesting, dealing with more subjects I'd never really given a thought.

It presents maths in a (most of the time) easy and understandable way, without patronizing the readers. Some subjects are, of course, more interesting than others. But they will give you some new things to talk about at dinner/ a party =) Because, exactly how long is a piece of string?

Just the right blend of maths, real world and clear, consice writing. I think I might adopt the 37% rule to blind dates and I finally unerstand how a cab meter works (I will still try and never use one though!) It is engaging and informative without becoming boring or over explained (unlike the other book i'm reading at the mo!)
The maths geek in me loved the explaination of "e"
Well worth a read if you are that way inclinded.

I've been reading a lot of books lately on the horrors of innumeracy. It was a pleasure to turn the reading experience on its head and instead read about the joy of numeracy! I knew the prequel left much more to said on the table, and the sequel delivered on that notion. Much fun.

* Funny and sometimes useful use of mathematics in everyday world. From the number of partners we need to see before we commit ourselves to a marriage to how to detect companies that cooked their books.

Lots of insightful topics on mathematics. The author intentionally omitted many of the calculations themselves for the sake of the reader, but I personally wished he had inserted them for my benefit anyway.
