Well, 2023 is just not getting off to a great reading start, is it? I've hit a row of duds.

TL:DR version: Unless you have lived in a cave on a deserted island since 1995 or been in a deep coma for at least 25 years, you already know approximately 95% of what is in this book even if you have never touched a Mac. The book is worth about $4.99 for what little real information you'll get from it. Check it out of the library or get it used at deep discount. No matter how much of a "dummy" you think you are, you cannot possibly be as computer illiterate as whoever this author thinks he is writing for.

For those who want the full rant:
In particular, if you're looking for any useful information on security settings, accessibility features, how to get your Razor keyboard to work because you prefer it over that wisp of an Apple keyboard, or how to change that goddamned Numbers active cell indicator so it is not that eye-searing shade of neon green. (still haven't figured that one out), you will not find it here. Apple's free (through Books) owner's manual has more information and is far less condescending. For accessibility features, there is an Apple Accessibility hotline you can call that usually has an answer for whatever you're trying to tweak, and they will spend as much time as you need walking you through the settings to suit your vision, hearing, or motor adaptability needs.

Seriously, back in 1991 when DOS for Dummies came out, maybe it was necessary to address readers as if we'd never seen a computer before. Some of us hadn't. But here we are, 30+ years later, and pretty much anyone who doesn't know what "right click" means or what email is doesn't know because they don't want to know. And those people aren't buying computers. So For Dummies needs to modernize their game. $28 for this pablum is bullshit. If I could return it, I would.

This book is a great resource for those who are new to the world of Mac computers. It provides a comprehensive overview of basic features and functions, making it a useful reference for anyone who needs a refresher or wants to learn more. While some of the information may be familiar to experienced Mac users, the book is still a valuable resource for those who are less familiar with the platform. At $4.99, it is an affordable investment in your Mac education. For those who prefer to borrow or buy used, the book is widely available and accessible. While the tone of the book may be somewhat condescending, it is still a helpful guide for those who are looking to improve their computer skills.
